Forest Park Forever

The Forest Park Trolley is now in service.

Forest Park Trolley rolling again

For The Edge Metro transit, Forest Park Forever and their Forest Park partners make it easy for bi-state area residents, visitors and families to enjoy all that Forest Park has to offer with the Metro Forest Park Trolley. The Forest Park Trolley officially returned for its seventh season of service on Saturday, April 15. The Trolley is a great way for Forest Park visitors to conveniently navigate through the 1,300-acre park and its many attractions, while helping reduce traffic congestion.

New for 2017, Forest Park Trolley riders have more options with two trolley routes to choose from, depending on their destination.

The Blue Forest Park Trolley route serves the western side of Forest Park, with stops at the World’s Fair Pavilion, Saint Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Art Museum and Emerson Grand Basin.

The Green Forest Park Trolley route serves the eastern side of Forest Park, with stops at the Jewel Box and the Saint Louis Science Center and Planetarium. Both trolley routes begin at the Forest Park-DeBaliviere MetroLink Station, and both routes make stops at the Missouri History Museum, Dennis & Judith Jones Visitor and Education Center, The Muny and the Boathouse.

The Metro Forest Park Trolley (MetroBus route #3) will operate daily between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. from Saturday, April 15 through Monday, September 4. The Blue Trolley route operates every 15 minutes on weekdays and the weekend, and the Green Trolley route operates every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes during the weekend.

Tickets are $2 for adults, $1 for children (ages 5-12), seniors and disabled passengers, and the Trolley is free for children ages 4 and under. Valid fare provides all-day on and off privileges on both the Blue and Green Forest Park Trolley routes.

A valid Metro Reduced Fare permit is required for the Senior and Disabled discount.

A convenient Park & Ride option is available for visitors inside Forest Park at the Visitor Center Lot across from the Dennis & Judith

Jones Visitor and Education Center. Guests can park their vehicle at this lot and then hop aboard the Forest Park Trolley for a quick and easy trip to their destinations inside Forest Park. In addition, there are free Park-Ride lots at 21 MetroLink stations in Missouri and Illinois. Park visitors can ride MetroLink to the Forest Park-DeBaliviere MetroLink Station and then catch the Blue Forest Park Trolley or the Green Forest Park Trolley at the station, depending on the zoo attractions they want to go to first.

The Metro #3 Forest Park Trolley service is a partnership between Forest Park Forever, Metro, Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis Science Center, Saint Louis Zoo and the City of St. Louis Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry.

Forest Park Trolley Tips: One-Day Trolley tickets can be purchased on the Trolley (exact change is required), at Forest Perk Café inside the Dennis & Judith Jones Visitor and Education Center, and at the Planetarium Ticket Station at the Saint Louis Science Center. Each Trolley ticket allows unlimited rides on the Forest Park Trolley for the day the fare is purchased.

Valid Metro passes are acceptable fares for the Forest Park Trolley. Visitors who are combining MetroLink or MetroBus with the Forest Park Trolley should consider purchasing the Metro Adventure Pass.

Available at Metro Ticket Vending Machines located at all MetroLink stations, the Metro Adventure Pass provides unlimited rides on MetroLink, MetroBus, the Forest Park Trolley and Downtown Trolley for one day for $7.50 an easy way for visitors to explore Forest Park and other attractions throughout the region.

Forest Park Trolley tickets and the Metro Adventure Pass can also be purchased at the MetroStore, located at 7th and Washington in downtown St. Louis. The MetroStore is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Forest Park Trolley vehicles coming from the Forest Park-DeBaliviere MetroLink station are

identified as Green – To Science Center or Blue – To Zoo depending on the route. Forest Park Trolley vehicles heading toward the Forest Park-DeBaliviere Station are identified as Green – To Forest Park MetroLink Station or Blue – To Forest Park MetroLink.

The #3 Forest Park Trolley is fully accessible to persons with disabilities.

Information on Obtaining Reduced Fare Permits Seniors (age 65 and older) and the disabled can ride MetroBus, MetroLink and the Forest Park Trolley at a reduced rate. Qualifying individuals must complete the following: Seniors must apply in person at the MetroStore and show a government-issued picture identification card verifying age (age 65 and older). Additional Traffic Support for Forest Park The Metro Forest Park Trolley is an important resource toward alleviating traffic in Forest Park this summer, and on especially busy days, a Traffic Relief Route will also be implemented. When traffic is particularly heavy at Forest Park’s popular Hampton entrance, Park Rangers will put this Relief Route into motion. This effort is done in coordination with MoDOT as a means to reduce backups and closures on Interstate 64 at Hampton Ave. To prevent traffic backups and highway closures, the Traffic Relief Route will direct drivers from Hampton on a circular path through the Park past many available parking locations. After parking, visitors may then hop on the Trolley to reach their destination in Forest Park.

In addition, the #90 Hampton MetroBus route will not operate in Forest Park on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. while the Forest Park Trolley is in operation. The route will instead detour around the park via Skinker Boulevard.

Zoo's Caribbean Cove now open

For The Edge Stingrays at Caribbean Cove presented by Mercy Kids opened at the Saint Louis Zoo on April 14 and runs through Oct. 1, 2017.

Cownose rays and southern stingrays, along with bonnethead, brown-banded and white-spotted bamboo sharks glide through a 17,000-gallon warm saltwater pool located under the Edward Jones Pavilion. Guests are encouraged to dip their hands into the water and allow the animals to touch them.

Occasionally, there will be an opportunity to feed the stingrays. These are hardy species that interact well with people in a safe and fun manner.

The 20-inch deep pool includes a waterfall and a state-of-the-art life support system. The pool also has solitary space and places for the animals to rest if they choose.

Zoo interpreters and educators will be on hand to help visitors and to share information about the animals, sustainable seafood and ocean conservation.

“Mercy Kids is excited to be part of this interactive exhibit designed for kids of all ages,” said Dr. John Mantovani, Chair of Pediatrics and Medical Director of Mercy Children’s Hospital, a program of Mercy Kids.

“Each spring families anticipate the opening of Stingrays at the Zoo, and we are proud to partner with others who bring education and fun to children in our community.”

About Sharks and Stingrays The bonnethead shark is the smallest member of the hammerhead family. They have semi-circular heads resembling a shovel or bonnet. Bamboo sharks are sometimes called “cat sharks” because the barbels, or sensory organs, near their mouths resemble cat whiskers.

The sharks at Stingrays at Caribbean Cove are small, docile fish and pose no danger to humans. They range from 2 ½ to 4 feet in length and are bottom-dwelling species that prey on small fish, crabs and invertebrates.

Visitors will not be feeding the sharks, but they will be able to touch the sharks as they swim by.

Cownose rays and southern stingrays are related to sharks. Stingrays have flat bodies, long pointed fins and long whip-like tails that can be used for defense against predators. At Stingrays at Caribbean Cove, their stingers or barbs are painlessly clipped back just as

human fingernails are clipped. Staff at the exhibit will monitor the stingrays throughout the season to ensure that the barbs stay neatly trimmed.

Admission Admission to Stingrays at Caribbean Cove is $4 per person for ages 2 and up. Children under age 2 are free. Zoo Friends members at the Family Level and above may use their Anywhere Plus passes for admission.

Visitors can enjoy a full day at the Zoo with all the amenities for just $12.95 with the Adventure Pass and receive free admission to Stingrays at Caribbean Cove and other attractions. Admission is free the first hour the Zoo is open. Stingray feedings are $1.00 per cup. Groups of 15 or more may call (314) 6464718 in advance for group discounts.

Zoo Hours Stingrays at Caribbean Cove will be open April 14 through Oct. 1 during Zoo hours. The Zoo’s spring hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through May 25.

From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, May 26-September 4, the Zoo is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday for Prairie Farms Summer Zoo Weekends. The Zoo will close at noon on Friday, June 16, because of ZOOFARI the Zoo’s biennial fundraiser.

The Zoo will be open until 7 p.m. on summer holidays: Memorial Day, May 29; Independence Day, July 3-4; and Labor Day, Sept. 4. Starting Sept. 5, the Zoo’s hours return to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

n the heels of National Superhero Day, HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis is inviting kids from across the area to be part of a special training designed to help them hone their superhero skills. Taking place on Sat., April 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Superhero Training Day will give aspiring superheroes of all ages the opportunity to conquer an obstacle course, hang out with special guest superheroes and be assigned a mission as part of HealthWorks! newest program, Mission Fit Possible! Those who come dressed as superhero (parents included) will receive $2 off the cost of admission.

“We are very excited to host this awesome day of superhero fun,” said Shannon Woodcock, president and CEO of HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis. “We can’t wait to see our museum filled with caped crusaders in training. This event will give them a chance to show off their existing superhero skills, and learn additional ones,

through the debut of our brand new programming.”

Mission Fit Possible! challenges superheroes to help uncover the “whys” behind a departure from health that has allowed a plague of lethargy to overtake the city.

Children are tired, hungry, lazy and grumpy and their health and fitness needs to be restored. The mission, should they choose to accept it, will require them to uncover clues and conquer challenges with the goal of restoring the health and vitality of children and adults region-wide. The event will also feature an obstacle course, face painting, fitness instruction from the YMCA’s Carondelet Park Rec Complex, guest superheroes from Gateway Guardians, and the ability explore Healthworks!

Kids’ Museum St. Louis, which features 12,000 square-feet of hands-on, interactive exhibit and programming space that is accessible to those of all abilities and designed to give kids and families the passion to lead healthy lives.

HealthWorks! Superhero Training Day is open to the public. General admission is $7 for ages three up and each individual dressed as a superhero will receive $2 off the cost of admission. Five-dollar raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the event, giving attendees the

chance to win a superhero-themed birthday party at the museum.

HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis came into existence as a result of efforts to expand The Delta Dental Health Theatre to address broader, overall health issues after Delta Dental of Missouri became a major corporate sponsor in 2004. Those plans evolved and grew more ambitious over the next several years, ultimately leading to the closure of the original theatre on Laclede’s Landing in downtown St. Louis after 38 years so it could be housed in the new, dramatically expanded museum. The Delta Dental Health Theatre was originally organized as a program under the Foundation of the Greater St. Louis Dental Society in 1977. In 2002, it was incorporated as an independent 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization.

Confluence Tower expands hours

Spring has sprung all along the Meeting of the Great Rivers and the Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower is now open five days a week.

Visitors can now watch the spring season evolve at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers from 50, 100 and 150 feet high.

The Tower, located at 435 Confluence Tower Dr., Hartford, IL, is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from Noon to 5 p.m.

“Spring is finally here,” Deanna Barnes, Hartford Project Manager said. “We have great views from the Tower throughout the spring season and some exciting events planned for people who want to celebrate our beautiful spring foliage. Visitors can check out our events at the Confluence Tower website.”

Guided daily tours are available throughout the day at the Tower.

People People planner Saint Louis Zoo to host 5K

Kick up some dust for St. Louis Children’s Hospital Make Tracks for the Zoo—now in its 32nd year. The race is set to run on Sunday, May 21, 2017. The Saint Louis Zoo’s annual 5K race/walk at 7:30 a.m. will wind through Forest Park, on a USATFcertified course. Participants will receive a disposable timing chip for more accurate results.

Children ages 7-12 can participate in a half-mile fun run at 8:50 a.m.; children ages 6 and under can participate in the quarter-mile fun run at 9 a.m. All ages can participate in a timed and competitive one-mile race at 9:10 a.m.

All races begin and end near the Kiener Memorial gates of the Zoo at the corner of Washington and Government Drive. All registrants will receive a complimentary performance T-shirt and continental breakfast (while supplies last).

Awards will be presented to overall winners and first place finishers in each age bracket for the 5K and onemile races at a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. in the Anheuser-Busch Theater in The Living World building.

After the race, join St. Louis Children's Hospital for Just Like You at the Zoo activities that teach children why it's important for people—and Zoo animals—to take care of their bodies. Children collect animal cards at four stations throughout the Zoo and can win a prize after the cards are collected.

For individuals participating in the 5K or 1-mile races, registration is $20 for those who register online

by April 16, $25 from April 17-May 20 and $30 on race day. Kids’ run registration for children ages 12 and under is $12 per child in advance and $15 on race day. The family registration, which includes two 5K/1-mile registrants and two kids’ run registrants, is $55 through April 16 and $60 from April 17-May 14.

Free parking is provided on the Zoo’s north and south lots before 8 a.m. on race day. Spaces are limited.

Vendors sought for Fair Saint Louis

Fair Saint Louis is currently accepting vendor applications for The Fairway, a shopping experience in which local and regional artisans can sell creative and unique products to fairgoers. Fair Saint Louis will take place July 2-4, 2017, in Forest Park.

“We are proud to support regional artisans and merchants, and to offer a place within the Fair for vendors to showcase their talents and for fairgoers to relax, shop and support artisans,” says Julie Donnelly, Event Marketing Manager, Fair St. Louis Foundation.

The Fairway will operate from 1 to 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 2 and Tuesday, July 4; and from 4 to 10 p.m. on Monday, July 3.

The Fairway will be stationed on Lagoon Drive, west of the Grand

Basin. Approximately 50,000-100,000 people attend the Fair each day.

Vendors should apply in one of the following categories: • Artisan or Crafter: Vendors who make their products with their own hands. Products must be unique.

• Merchandise Vendor: Vendors who sell merchandise that they do not personally make by hand.

• Roaming Vendor (limited availability): Vendors who have access to sell their merchandise in approved areas, subject to vendor level. Roaming vendors do not receive a tent, table and chairs or electric; but will receive vendor credentials, parking pass and a listing on the Fair Saint Louis website.

From the ever-popular Camp KangaZoo to individual programs for all ages, the Saint Louis Zoo’s Education Department has classes, overnight experiences and daytime adventures for everyone in the family.

Camp KangaZoo Camp KangaZoo campers can choose to attend one or two full-day camps with the themes "Ecology-Everything’s Connected” and “Extreme Animals.” Monday through T h u r s d a y, c a m p e r s w i l l p l a y games, meet animals, enjoy sing-alongs and view dynamic Zoo exhibits. On Thursday nights, they’ll sleep at the Zoo a n d w a k e u p w i t h t h e b i rd s !

Camp KangaZoo scholarships are available for families with financial need.

Younger children can hop "out of the pouch" and into the Zoo at Camp Joey. Half-day and full-day sessions are available for children who are at least 4 years old and entering kindergarten.

The 2017 U.S. Army St. Louis Ribfest, a barbeque food festival, will take place Memorial Day weekend in Ferguson, Missouri to honor veterans while raising money for the local community.

With the U.S. Army as a title sponsor and the event taking place in a World War II Memorial Park, patriotism will be anything but in short supply at this year’s festival.

The 2017 U.S. Army St. Louis Ribfest is a four-day-long, familyfriendly event with plenty to see and do. Entry into the event is free and will feature barbeque vendors from across the country, offering all tastes and varieties of America’s favorite smoked meats. Rollin' down memory lane Illinois Railway Museum among nation's largest For The Edge Believe it or not, America's largest railway museum is in the tiny hamlet of Union, Ill., population 580, on the western edge of McHenry County, just north of Interstate 90. Many train museums claim to be "largest" based on acreage or track miles. But the Illinois Railway Museum is the "Real McCoy" with more rolling stock than any other U.S. museum.

With a whopping 45 diesel and 25 steam locomotives, plus countless passenger cars, Pullmans, dining cars, dome cars, cabooses, baggage cars, freight cars, streetcars, interurbans (commuter trains), snowplows and track-maintenance cars, the Museum dazzles with its sheer volume of inventory. There are even entire trains on display, such as the diesel powered streamliner Nebraska Zephyr and the luxurious North Shore Line Electroliner.

Nine enormous display "barns" shelter trains in various stages of restoration; some are bright and shiny and in running order; others are works in progress. Each barn is so long, standing at one end is like looking for the proverbial "light" at the end of the tunnel! Hop aboard cars in various stages of restoration and chat with volunteers who love talking to visitors and answering your questions. You might even find a cat or two wandering about the barns. They're part of the volunteer staff, too, fed and encouraged to hang around on rodent patrol.

Ten miles of track loop around the Museum grounds, and a variety of trains offer rides, depending

on the date. Special events are scheduled nearly every weekend May through September. Among the most popular are those held on Mother's Day and Father's Day, over the Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day weekends, plus "Day Out With Thomas" in July.

Then in November and December, Santa himself personally escorts lucky kids and their parents on an enchanting train ride through

Illinois countryside during four Happy Holiday Railway weekends.

A s y o u ro a m t h e M u s e u m grounds, it's not difficult to imagine yourself living in the heyday of railroading. You'll board trains at a charming 1851 train depot, see an 1890 switching tower, a 1910 Chicago "L" station and eat at a 1934 diner that's part of a modern diner which serves food to visitors.

"Life"

Life is a box of chocolates, a highway and, alas, a mediocre science-fiction thriller.

In Daniel Espinosa's "Life," an international space station orbiting the Earth intercepts an automated capsule returning from Mars with samples: rocks, dust and, as it turns out, a tiny monocellular organism that proves the existence of life on another planet. The thing, though, about those monocellular organisms from Mars is that they grow up.

When Dr. Hugh Derry (Arioyon Bakare) injects the cell with glucose, it begins rapidly growing bigger, beyond its petri dish. (Yes, "Life" is, above all, a lesson in the dangers of too much sugar.) The crew — including Jake Gyllenhaal's troubled veteran, Ryan Reynolds' cocky engineer, Rebecca Ferguson's microbiologist and Hiroyuki Sanada's new father — celebrate their remarkable discovery and observe its development.

"You're going to be a daddy," Reynolds' astronaut tells the proud Derry.

Derry, the biological expert of the bunch, hopes the organism — dubbed "Calvin" — will teach the scientists about the origin, the nature "and maybe even the meaning of life."

Such glories, however, aren't in store. The harsh revelation that Calvin brings is that life — violently striving for survival — finds a way.

Unfortunately, "Life," the movie, doesn't. Once the alien lifeform strengthens and gets loose, "Life" surrenders to a tiresome chase away from not just its ravenous creature but from the movies "Life" so obviously takes it cues from. "Life" certainly can't come anywhere near the well-earned horrors of "Alien," nor does it boast anything like the silky splendor of "Gravity."

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout, some sci-fi violence and terror."

RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes.

"The Zookeeper's Wife"

In German-occupied Poland during the darkest days of World War II, a zookeeper and his wife managed to save the lives hundreds of Jewish people, many of whom were detained in the Warsaw Ghetto, by giving them shelter and refuge on the zoo grounds. This extraordinary true story is dramatized rather effectively in director Niki Caro's "The Zookeeper's Wife ," based on the non-fiction book by the naturalist writer Diane Ackerman.

Caro, who directed "Whale Rider" and "McFarland, USA," imbues the production with a glossy sheen, which in the confines of trailers and advertisements might make this look dismissible. In mining the drama of WWII for cinematic stories, audiences have rightfully been trained to be suspicious of those that look too pretty. You're certain that "The Zookeeper's Wife" is doomed to suffocating sentimentality, emotional blackmail and too-neat resolutions.

But despite a romanticized beginning, in which our heroine Antonina (Jessica Chastain, affecting an accent that you'll get used to, I swear) seems to live the most picture perfect life that's ever existed (frolicking with the free-roaming zoo animals, sipping tea on her balcony and gazing lovingly at her doting husband and son), Caro keeps the action and emotion real and grounded throughout. She chooses silences and understatement over heightened stakes. This inherently dramatic and amazing story doesn't need dressing up — it just needs to be told.

The stage-setting is a necessary evil, but used wisely enough to introduce the characters and set up what will be an ongoing personal conflict that will serve as a sort of microcosm for the war — the friendship with a German zoologist, Lutz (Daniel Bruhl), that turns into an increasingly uneasy alliance when the war starts.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements, disturbing images, violence, brief sexuality, nudity and smoking."

RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes.

"Gifted"

There are several positive factors in the mixed equation that is "Gifted," starring Chris Evans and the appealing 10-year-old Mckenna Grace: A brilliant and precocious yet sweetly empathetic young girl. A devoted and decidedly hunky father figure. And then there's math itself, presented not as a refuge for social misfits, but as an exciting and elegant pursuit.

Unfortunately, a movie about mathematical formulas relies way too much on moviemaking formula, and the result is way less than the sum of its parts. Indeed, "Gifted," directed by Marc Webb, often feels like the incomplete shell of a movie, with the guts and connective tissue missing.

This is hardly the fault of the cast, which also features the welcome (but underused) presence of Octavia Spencer, and the estimable Scottish actress Lindsay Duncan. Rather, it seems due to the way-too-obvious dialogue and often unconvincing plot twists, not to mention a courtroom subplot that is, strangely, rarely interesting.

We meet Frank (Evans) and 6-year-old Mary (Grace) as the two are readying for her first day of school. Until now, Frank, Mary's uncle who has been raising her since she was a baby, has home-schooled her, but that well has run dry.

Mary, a child prodigy, is not excited for school, and one can see why: the children are asked simple addition questions, but Mary shows an ability to do complex multiplication in her head. Immediately, the teacher, Bonnie (Jenny Slate) knows she has a gifted child on her hands.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements, language and some suggestive material."

RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes.

"Colossal"

The Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo makes funny, fantastical, Frankenstein-like films that playfully combine small-scale with big-concept. His 2011 film "Extraterrestrial" is a romantic comedy centered on a handful of characters amid a massive unseen alien invasion. His "Timecrimes" was about a marriage filtered through a time-traveling murder mystery.

"Colossal," his second English-language feature and biggest production yet, fuses a traditional rom-com plot — big-city girl returns to her hometown — with a far more monstrous genre: the kaiju film. It's a tantalizing prospect. Who among us hasn't wondered what if Sally had met Godzilla instead of Harry? Would "Sex and the City" not have been improved had Mothra been on the loose?

In truth, "Colossal" is a more sly manipulation and inversion of genre. Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is an unemployed New York writer who spends her nights drinking before making apologetic early morning returns to her boyfriend's (Dan Stevens) luxury apartment. The more-together Tim, in the film's opening scene, has had enough. "I can't deal with you in that state," he says. He packs her bags.

Gloria retreats to her small-town home, crashing at her family's now empty house, and the movie starts taking the shape you'd expect it to. Gloria runs into an old friend, Oscar (Jason Sudeikis), who cheerfully hires her as a waitress at his bar. Gloria, again, doesn't make it to bed until the sun is up, spending nights drinking with Oscar and his pals (Tim Blake Nelson, Austin Stowell).

The mess Gloria — alcoholic and inconsiderate — makes turns out to harm not just those around her, but thousands of fleeing Koreans. She wakes to see news reports of a monster attack in Seoul. Later, she realizes with horror that the monster has her mannerisms (a particular way of scratching its head) and there's a strange coincidence between its regular appearances (always at 8:05 a.m.) and whenever Gloria steps onto a nearby playground.

"The Lost City of Z"

Modest and majestic at once, the films of James Gray patiently burrow their way into the souls of their characters and, maybe, into you. Gray is painterly and exacting — some might say to a fault. But his movies' revelations are complex and contradictory — full of life's messiness — and their formal textures break open with moments of transcendence.

So, yeah, I like them — particularly his last one, "The Immigrant," and his new one, "The Lost City of Z." Both are period films with a pulse and a now-ness the genre often lacks. Each plunges us into the passages of early 20th century strivers and leaves us with a shattering final image of departure. Like the tide, they overwhelm and then recede.

"He's been rather unfortunate in his choice of ancestors," is how one character explains Percy Fawcett's predicament early in "The Lost City of Z," based on David Grann's nonfiction book. Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam) is a British officer but decoration has eluded him, and his deceased, disgraced father has soiled his name.

Though craving action, he's assigned in 1906 on a mapmaking mission to the "blank spaces" of Bolivia where the British are meant to act as "referees" in a territory dispute with Brazil. The expedition into the Amazon jungles soon fills him with a romantic sense of exploration (his wife, Nina, played

by Sienna Miller, reads him Kipling's "The Explorer"), and he travels across the Atlantic in search of glory and redemption.

Success, he's told, would change his lot "considerably."

On the boat to South America, Fawcett meets his aide-decamp, Henry Costin (an excellent, heavily bearded Robert Pattinson), who initially eyes his leader warily.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "violence, disturbing images, brief strong language and some nudity."

RUNNING TIME: 140 minutes.

"Fate of the Furious"

"The Fast and the Furious" hasn't become a billion-dollar global franchise because of its scintillating dialogue and high-minded drama. It's all about the cars, the action, the international settings and the good-looking cast.

So don't give too much thought to the story holes and convoluted plot in "The Fate of the Furious ," the eighth installment in the saga. If things don't add up or characters killed off in previous films suddenly re-emerge, just go with it, knowing that it's leading up to an epic final chase across a remote Russian ice field between sports cars, Humvees and a nuclear submarine.

Suspension of disbelief is required for these films. Remember in "Furious 7" when parachute-equipped cars fell from a cargo plane and the drivers were shown "steering" the airborne vehicles? Here, they speed across ice with unbelievable accuracy. One character even wakeboards through the tundra on a detached car door.

"F8" begins with Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) honeymooning in Havana. Charmed by the city's car culture, they're soon in a street race — a thrilling sequence with motorcycles swooping in to stop traffic as the drivers speed by.

After finishing with his car on fire, Dom is approached by the mysterious Cipher (Charlize Theron), who blackmails him into betraying his colleagues and working for her.

Despite her ridiculous hairdo and having to utter such lines as "Your team's about to go up against the only thing they can't handle: You," Theron is a great villain. She anchors the story with her gravitas by making Cipher a convincingly capable and determined foe.

RATED: rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "prolonged sequences of violence and destruction, suggestive content, and language."

RUNNING TIME: 160 minutes.

They and their small team travel up a river and it immediately feels as though "The Lost City of Z" has swum into the currents of Werner Herzog's "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" and "Fitzcarraldo" and Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now." The ominous notes are many: a glassy-eyed rubber baron (Franco Nero) whose business the British are there to protect; a native guide who warns that the

river "is always danger"; the onset of hunger among the thinning crew.

But while Fawcett's journey is grueling and frightful, he finds not madness in the jungle but wonder. His grandiose notions aren't humbled in the Amazon, they're elevated. Gray's camera, too, stays composed, and he leads his epic in a more sprawling direction.

Fawcett believed that he found deep in the Amazon evidence of an ancient civilization.

Upon his return to London, he's hailed as a hero. (Made a celebrity by his exploits, the Stetson-wearing Fawcett was a forerunner to Indiana Jones.) But his claim of a lost city and a civilization older than England's is mocked.

He's urged not to raise the stature of "the savage."

"Gifted" an easy-to-like movie

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge I’ve long envied Chris Evans.

Not for his good looks or the biceps that he brings to the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he plays Steve Rogers/Captain America. More so, I praise his good luck and what is obviously a talented agent. When not suiting up to play Cap (about six times a year, I’d estimate), Evans uses down time to film smaller roles that are excellent. I’ve told you b e f o re a b o u t “ S u n s h i n e ” a n d “Snowpiercer”, two of the greatest sci-fi films in the last twenty y e a r s , b o t h o f w h i c h f e a t u re Evans in a prominent or lead role. This time out, he tackles human drama in a movie where he co-stars with a kid (McKenna Grace) and a lady that knows a

thing or two about dramatic tear-jerking (Octavia Spencer).

“Gifted” landed alongside this weekend’s monolithic Easter Weekend stalwart, “The Fate of the Furious”. Did anyone else notice?

Frank Adler (Evans) is a guy with a lot going on upstairs, but he actively chooses to live in near squalor – perfectly happily – while fixing boats on the docks outside his Florida trailer park.

He works hard, with his hands, and uses all of his free time to care for his six year-old niece, Mary (Grace). He loves her and gives her the same kind of heckling hard time that I do for my own nieces when we spar t h ro u g h d ialo gue (w he n the y respond to my text messages).

Except on Friday nights. Frank hits the local watering hole

on Fridays, looking for what briefly could pass for love, and Mary spends time with Roberta (Spencer), their sassy landlady a few doors down. Theirs is a friendly arrangement, one that suits all the parties exactly as they want it. There’s even a one-eyed cat named Fred to round out this happy family. But something is missing and you have a feeling that there’s intentionally many ro a d s l e f t u n e x p l o re d b y t h e Adlers.

Mary’s mom was a brilliant mathematician who ended her own life when her baby was a baby. It’s clear by the way they examine her memory that she was troubled by the burden of her genius and the looming successful completion of her life’s work (at age 27). She had to find a way out and that left

Mary an orphan on her uncle’s doorstep. “Gifted” is mostly a custody battle between Frank and his icy mother (Lindsay Duncan), Evelyn, another noted mathematician in her own right, who spies in her granddaughter the same spark of prodigy spirit that haunted her mom. Evelyn sues for custody so that she can put Mary into a school that can cater to her special gifts.

Mary’s kindergarten teacher (Jenny Slate) instantly regrets getting involved, but she does wind up having a Friday night fling with Frank that humanizes elementary school teachers (and not in a great way, I’m sorry to say). Do credit Slate for moving away from her comedy roots and exploring actual acting.

There’s plenty to love about this movie. Evan s is always

tender. Grace is smart and has awesome timing, especially in the few scenes where she’s able to use legitimate adult language.

I wanted this movie to a be a lot like “I Am Sam”, a gem from 2001 that brought Dakota Fanning into our sphere, and it also has great parallels to “Hidden Figures” and 2014’s “Black or White.” We’ll credit math and Octavia Spencer for that. Truthfully, while it uses all of these great things that other similar movies have done so well, “Gifted” loses some points for originality. Still an easy-to-like picture, just not quite standing all on its own.

“Gifted” runs 101 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, language, and some suggestive material. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

Religion Who are Coptic Christians?

BY PAUL ROWE Trinity Western University (THE CONVERSATION) On Palm Sunday, April 9, the Islamic State targeted two Coptic churches in coordinated bombings in the Egyptian cities of Tanta and Alexandria. The explosions killed dozens of Egyptians and injured many more in the worst of a number of such attacks that have taken place in the last decade.

The interrelated challenges of violence, economics and discrimination have led to the increasing departure of Christians from the Middle East. For centuries they have been part of the rich religious diversity of the region.

So who are these people that National Geographic has called “The Forgotten Faithful”?

Coptic history Among the Christians of the Middle East, the largest number – some eight million or so – is made up of Egypt’s Copts. Since I first visited Egypt in the 1990s, I have been interested in this community and its contribution to pluralism.

Copts are the indigenous Christian population of Egypt, who date back to the first decades following the life of Jesus Christ. The

biblical Book of Acts tells how Jews from Egypt came to Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost, a Jewish harvest festival that marked the birth of the Christian church merely weeks after Christ’s crucifixion. Many of these Egyptians took the message of Christianity back to their own country. Christian tradition holds that St. Mark, one of the early disciples of Jesus, became the first bishop of Egypt.

By the fourth century, the majority of Egyptians had embraced the Christian faith.

Even after the Muslim conquest in the seventh century, the majority of Egyptians were still Christians. It was only during the Middle Ages that greater and greater numbers embraced Islam, and the Christian population dwindled.

Today, Egyptian Christians make up approximately 5 to 10 percent of the Egyptian population. The word “Copt” is used for all Egyptian Christians. It is derived from an ancient Greek word that simply means “Egyptian.”

Copts are fiercely proud of their Egyptian heritage that dates back to the age of the pyramids as early as 3000 B.C. The vast majority of Copts are members of the Coptic Orthodox Church, an independent church that arose in A.D. 451, long before the divide that created the Eastern Orthodox and Roman

Catholic churches in 1054.

The language of the Coptic Orthodox church service (or liturgy) used in daily worship is also known as Coptic. It is the original Egyptian language written in Greek script.

Copts live throughout every corner of Egypt and at every socioeconomic level. One of Egypt’s richest men, Naguib Sawiris, is a Copt, and so are most of Cairo’s garbage collectors, the zabellin. Though Copts are largely indistinguishable from the Muslim majority, many are given tattoos of a cross on their wrists as children, signifying their permanent commitment to the community. In addition, Coptic women are unlikely to veil, making them stand out from Muslim women.

The head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, and the most significant Christian leader in Egypt, is the bishop of the See of St. Mark, known among Egyptians as the Coptic pope or patriarch. Today the Church is led by Pope Tawadros II, who studied pharmacy before deciding to pursue a religious career in the 1980s.

In his book “Desert Father,” Australian author James Cowan describes how the monastic tradition became an important support for Egyptian Christians under persecution and helped to preserve culture throughout the Christian world.

Modern-day Copts often visit the monasteries for spiritual guidance, community retreats and to rediscover their heritage.

But while Copts may go to the deserts of Egypt for their religious practice, most live in the cities among their Muslim compatriots.

Their churches and community service organizations – and even Coptic news sites and media – contribute to the vibrancy of Egyptian social and intellectual life.

Dining Delights Jump into spring with dairy delights For The Edge Spring is a season of new beginnings, fresh starts, and hope for new opportunities. It’s also the perfect time to take a closer look at eating habits to improve health.

Long term goals, like managing w e i g h t o r c o n t ro l l i n g b l o o d pressure, call for making small changes that stick. Keep in mind, healthy changes aren’t a matter of removing favorite foods. Whether aiming to decrease calories or fat or increase fiber or protein, simple tweaks can help pave the way toward meeting larger goals. “No matter what changes you want to make, there is a dairy option to help you meet your nutrition goals,” says Erin Rich, nutrition educator for St. Louis District Dairy Council.

Small changes, like using Greek yogurt in place of oil in recipes, can enhance nutrition and flavor.

Substituting nutrient dense foods for those high in calories but low in nutrients is an easy move toward healthy eating. Instead of grabbing a treat that only offers sugar, satisfy your sweet tooth by choosing yogurt topped with fresh fruit. This simple swap will appease the treat craving and help you meet the recommended three daily dairy servings. Rich suggests “Rather than sipping soda, enjoy a glass of ice cold milk or flavored milk. Milk’s protein, calcium, and vitamin D offer a big nutrition bang for your buck.” Boosting fiber, vitamins, and minerals can be accomplished by adding a vegetable to your meal.

dose of protein as well, “notes Rich.

If the goal is to lower fat and calories, choosing leaner versions of favorite foods can help. For meats and poultry, trim off visible fat and skin. Also, opt for cooking methods that do not require additional fat, like baking, grilling, or broiling. Selecting low fat or fat-free dairy products will cut calories without sacrificing nutrition. Rich notes “Fat-free, lowfat, and reduced fat dairy products provide the same essential nutrients as their full-fat counterparts. The only difference is the fat and calories.”

Recipes: Spinach Artichoke Dip Yield: 8 servings • Softened butter, for the baking dish • 1 (14‑ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped • 1 (10‑ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese • 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onions, white and green parts • 1 garlic clove, minced • 1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter a 1‑quart casserole dish or 9‑inch glass pie plate; set aside.

Combine the artichokes, spinach, yogurt, mozzarella, Parmesan, green onions, garlic, and bell pepper in a large bowl; mix thoroughly.

Transfer to the prepared dish.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until bubbling and lightly browned on top. Let stand for 5 minutes. Serve with your choice of chips, crackers, or vegetable slices.

Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring frequently, for 30 to 40 minutes, until it is thickened.

Ensure the rice is done. It should be firm, but not crunchy.

Remove the pudding from the heat. Serve warm, or refrigerate, well covered, and serve chilled.

Sprinkle with a touch of ground cinnamon.
