The highly-rated show Long Island Medium follows Theresa’s life as a typical Long Island wife and mom with one very big difference…she can communicate with the dead. “Pacific Rim Uprising”

April 12, 2018

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

At the end of the monsters-versus-robots flick “Pacific Rim,” a breach at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean is closed, plugging a hole that allowed hellish creatures to emerge and terrorize the globe. But after the movie earned $400 million worldwide, was that portal really going to stay closed? No, of course not. And, with sincere apologies to the front-line cities on the Pacific Rim facing a mauling, we say thank goodness, because the new sequel “Pacific Rim Uprising” is a visually-stunning, expertly crafted dose of cheer-at-the-screen fun. It’s the definition of what a blockbuster sequel should be. “Pacific Rim Uprising “ uses a lighter palette and is geared toward a younger audience than its 2013 predecessor, but it keeps all the key elements, upping the special effects and finding honest moments and humor in the midst of world-destroying carnage. It satisfies on every front. Success wasn’t foreordained for the sequel. Original writer Travis Beacham and director-writer Guillermo del Toro haven’t returned (though del Toro is still a producer), nor have its original stars, Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba. (Elba had a very good reason for not showing up: He blew himself up in the final moments of the original to keep the Pacific portal closed). RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and some language.” RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

“Gemini”

Wr i t e r- d i re c t o r A a ro n K a t z ’ s “ G e m i n i “ i s a very stylishly executed and well-cast attempt at a Lynchian neo-noir that doesn’t really work. Glum and meandering, the Los Angeles-set mystery about a Hollywood starlet and her assistant starts off promising enough but trudges along aimlessly to a deeply silly and maddening end. Heather Anderson is the name of the starlet/ actress/whatever in question played with otherworldly coolness by the otherworldly cool Zoe Kravitz. We never see her acting, just sort of existing in the moody milieu of L.A.’s middle section, the 1920s-style apartment buildings and strip mall parking lots of Koreatown and the tonier hills to the north. She and her assistant Jill LeBeau (Lola Kirke) may as well be in their own little world, connected to the outside through cell phones and text messages and one stray paparazzi, Stan (James Ransone), who follows them around. We meet Jill fielding a phone call from Heather ’s aggrieved recent ex-boyfriend Devin, who casually threatens to kill Heather for what she’s done to him. Heather arrives shortly after, wonders who it was and kind of rolls her eyes when the message is relayed. Her mind is elsewhere, namely on the project she’s about to bail on. Only she’s not actually going to break the news to the director, Greg (Nelson Franklin). She’s going to make Jill do it. RATEDL R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “pervasive language, and a violent image.” RUNNING TIME: 92 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Ready Player One”

“Why can’t we go backward for once?” wonders the protagonist of “Ready Player One” shortly before gunning his “Back to the Future” DeLorean in reverse. “Really put the pedal to the metal.” Pressing rewind is, if anything, an understandable desire these days. But in today’s reboot, remake-mad movies, it’s not exactly swimming against the tide. Yet Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One,” a rollicking virtual-world geekfest flooded by ‘80s ephemera, doesn’t just want to wade back into the past. It wants to race into it at full throttle. For those who get their fix through pop nostalgia, “Ready Player One” is — for better or worse — an indulgent, dizzying overdose. In a dystopian 2045 where the world looks mostly like a trash heap, teenager Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) lives in “The Stacks” — not aisles of books but towering piles of mobile homes — in Columbus, Ohio, with his aunt. “These days,” he narrates, “reality’s a bummer.” With bleakness all around, seemingly everyone is addicted to strapping on a headset and entering the virtual-reality landscape of the OASIS. There, an individual can transform into a digital avatar — live-action or animated, human or extraterrestrial, Sonny or Cher — and do basically anything. Your imagination is your only limit. You can even, we’re told, climb Mt. Everest with Batman! Presumably the thin air would make him less grumpy. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of sci-fi action violence, bloody images, some suggestive material, partial nudity and language.” RUNNING TIME: 140 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Movies “Ready Player One” fun for all ages By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Pop culture is a fickle mistress. We are bombarded by sights and sounds all the time that scream for things to become our next big obsession. Generationally, the siren songs are often as different as apples and oranges, but this weekend’s top movie, “Ready Player One”, is a modern riff on the nostalgic throwbacks of my childhood hey-days, the 1980s. Where this movie is shiny and loud and chock full of the finest special effects money can buy, my fondest memories of the 1980s in film were of the seriously low-tech variety. I’m as up on this picture as I was with the high concept “Cloak & Dagger” or the shockingly bad sci-fi “Solarbabies”. We’ve come a long way, but “Ready Player One” probably has the most in common with “The Goonies”, a film that shares a behindthe-camera director/executive producer in Steven Spielberg, himself maybe the most touchstone product of the decade’s greatest film events. His career has been

a wild ride and the new movie keeps it humming right along. “Ready Player One” is based on the 2011 debut novel by Ernest Cline, who adapts his own work into a script with Zak Penn. It’s an entertaining look at where we may be headed by 2045 when fossil fuels run out and the world decides to chuck it all and live inside a virtual world called The Oasis. Given the rise in popularity of VR and the continuing perseverance of the dystopian future trope, I will caution you early that “Ready Player One” is no cautionary tale. Even if our world were to collectively logon and make a place to escape to from our real one, there’s no way it’s going to be this much fun. Young Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is a kid in Columbus that spends all of his time in The Oasis under the guise of his avatar, Parzival, searching for an Easter egg hidden inside the game by its genius inventor, James Halliday (Mark Rylance, the Oscar winner from Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies”). Find the egg and you win control of The Oasis and Halliday’s

trillion-dollar fortune. The enigmatic designer has been dead for years, but his prize still lives on in the game, hidden behind elaborate clues left in his extensive journals. Sounds like the raddest scavenger hunt in the universe, right? Inside The Oasis one can do anything and be anyone. You can go to clubs or high school, sure, but you can also look like Max Headroom and drive t h e f ro m D e L o re a n f ro m “ B a c k t o the Future”. Ski the pyramids, climb Everest alongside Batman, be a lover or a fighter or have pink skin with scaly eyes; these are all real examples from the movie. But Wade has bigger reasons for using this refuge to guide his life. He wants that reward. During the course of three major set pieces, he gradually paces the search with help from his ‘tribe’: love interest Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), Orc buddy Aech (Lena Waithe), apprentice Sho (Philip Zhao), and ninja Daito (Win Morisaki). None of these characters IRL is what they appear to be in The

Oasis. They game through a gigantic race sequence involving monster trucks and King Kong, spend a creepy time inside “The Shining’s” Overlook Hotel, and battle for control of Planet Doom (whether the one from Marvel comics or “Voltron” remains ambiguous to t h i s v i e w e r ) a g a i n s t S o r re n t o ( B e n Mendelsohn), Halliday’s angry protege who will use The Oasis to monetize not just the planet, but all of its enslaved people. I could go on for hours about the geek chic decor, robust throwaway references, or guest appearances by the Iron Giant, Atari 2600, or Michael Jackson’s red leather ensemble from “Thriller”. Instead, see Spielberg’s most ‘Spielberg’ movie for yourself. It’s fun for all ages and great fun for fans of a certain age. “Ready Player One” runs 140 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action violence, bloody images, some suggestive material, partial nudity, and language. I give this film three stars out of four.

Comedy duo born in “Blockers” By JEN YAMATO Los Angeles Times WWE superstar John Cena and Australian newcomer Geraldine Viswanathan walk into a bustling brasserie for lunch on a rainy spring day in Beverly Hills, cosmically and accidentally twinning in patterned suits to talk “Blockers,” their heartwarming new R-rated comedy about teen sexuality, parental anxieties and a phenomenon known as … well, we’ll get to that in a bit. In the comedy, which opens Friday from Universal after premiering to warm reviews at the South by Southwest Film Festival last month, Viswanathan shines with natural charisma as Kayla, the allAmerican star athlete whose confidence leads a trio of teenagers (including Kathryn Newton and Gideon Adlon) into every overprotective parent’s worst nightmare: a sex pact to lose their virginity

on prom night. Cena, one of wrestling’s biggest names, has built his ring career around an unwaveringly tough good guy act. But here he unleashes the comedy chops glimpsed in supporting roles in “Trainwreck” and “Sisters” as Mitchell, Kayla’s stay-at-home dad who’s given to outsized outbursts of emotion, tears and many of the film’s more outrageous (and skin-baring) body humor gags. Together they ground an outrageous comedy in a relatable parent-child dynamic: He’s the perennial dad-coach training his daughter to be strong and confident in sports terms, the only language he knows, and she’s a selfpossessed young woman developing a curiosity for life experiences beyond the goal posts. In person the two share a warm mutual admiration from the nearly three-month Atlanta shoot last year, and Viswanathan’s ebullience softens Cena’s more serious-

leaning stoicism. But there are many things the “Blockers” breakouts are still learning about each other as they slide into a booth and nosh on squid ink pasta (her) and breakfast for lunch (him). For starters: their most-used emojis. “I use the top hat a lot, and the baby,” says Viswanathan, checking her phone. “The snowman, the emoji with glasses, the flame — and the eggplant, actually.” “I only use that because I did a movie called ‘Eggplant Emoji!’” she’s quick to add in her warm Aussie accent, laughing at the look on Cena’s face. “I’ve never used it in a deeper sense … for the record!” “I’m like a level-one emoji ninja,” offers Cena, whose emoji leanings are, seemingly like him, straightforward and to the point. “I use the generic smiley face, the thumbs down, the thumbs up, the strong arm, the middle finger. That’s it.” The two were cast separately for their roles by director Kay Cannon — known as

a writer on projects from “30 Rock” to the “Pitch Perfect” franchise — who makes her helming debut with the Universal comedy. Cannon wasn’t exactly an avid WWE fan watching Cena lay smackdowns on his opponents every week on live TV; seeing him dip his toe into comedy films landed him on her radar. She was even more impressed watching his personality and charisma peek out while hosting the ESPYs and in a 2016 anti-bigotry PSA. “And I watched ‘Total Divas,’” she says over the phone, referring to the reality series he appeared on with his fiancee and fellow wrestler Nikki Bella. “I feel like he’s America wrapped up in a flag. Everybody connects to him, from all walks of life.” For the role of Kayla, “I was definitely trying to find a woman of color,” says Cannon, “and what I liked about Geraldine is that she can play that cocky, fun, strong, funny lady, but then can also take it down a little bit.”

The Arts Muny updates “Meet Me in St. Louis” For The Edge The Muny announced that Broadway director and writer Gordon Greenberg will revise the book for Meet Me In St. Louis, August 4 - 12. This production, the 8th in Muny history, will also include several songs new to the stage adaptation of Meet Me In St. Louis, including “Boys and Girls Like You and Me,” a song written by Rodgers & Hammerstein for Oklahoma! and then recorded for, but ultimately cut, from the film of Meet Me In St. Louis. This production will also include the first stage use of “You and I,” a song in the film by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed. “In 1960, The Muny proudly p ro d u c e d t h e w o r l d s t a g e premiere of Meet Me In St. Louis, said Muny Artistic Director and Executive Producer Mike Isaacson. “How fitting for our 100th season, we create a new edition that we hope will be more thrilling or satisfying than any before, and will become the definitive stage version. “I’m so grateful that Gordon Greenberg has taken on this challenge,” Isaacson continued. “His work on Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn brought such joy to both The Muny and Broadway audiences. I’m also grateful to the many willing partners including Ted Chapin and The Rodgers & Hammerstein organization, Sony/ATV, Sargent Aborn and Ta m s - Wi t m a r k a n d Wa r n e r Brothers who have supported us as we take a fresh look at a show that remains beloved by St. Louisans and people around the world.” “It’s a huge honor to reimagine this beloved classic in celebration of The Muny’s 100th,” said Greenberg. “Meet Me In St. Louis is a loving homage to a simpler

time, and a reminder of what is most important in life – the people who fill our homes. As we seek connection in a continually splintered world, this message is as resonant and powerful as ever. The film was sort of a balm to the nation during WWII, but they stopped showing it to soldiers overseas because it was so beautifully evocative of home and family that they would break down weeping.” The Muny’s production is directed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge with choreography by Josh Walden and music direction by Charlie Alterman. Meet Me In St. Louis is proudly sponsored by Emerson. Familiar to Muny audiences, Gordon Greenberg returns to

Forest Park where he has directed Jesus Christ Superstar (2017), the pre-Broadway engagement of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn (2015), West Side Story (2013) and directed and co-conceived (with Nell Benjamin) Pirates! or Gilbert & Sullivan Plunder ’d (2012). Other select directing/ writing credits include: this season’s London revival of Barnum (Menier Chocolate Factory), Heart of Rock and Roll, the Huey Lewis musical (Old Globe), the criticallyacclaimed West End revival of Guys and Dolls (starring Rebel Wilson, nominated for six Olivier Awards), Working (adapted with Stephen Schwartz and LinManuel Miranda, Drama Desk nomination), Dietrich-Piaf,

The Angel and Sparrow (Segal Centre, Montreal), Disney’s Tangled and last season’s Tony nominated stage adaptation of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn, which Gordon co-wrote and directed (Roundabout, Universal, PBS Great Performances). Greenberg attended Stanford University and NYU and is a member of SDC, WGA and the Dramatists Guild. For Gordon’s full biography, please click here. About the show: Clang, clang, clang, we are off to The Muny! Based on the heartwarming 1944 MGM film, Meet Me In St. Louis paints a portrait of a turn of the century American family. Set in the summer of 1903, the Smiths eagerly await the grand

opening of the 1904 World’s Fair. With hits such as “The Trolley Song,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “The Boy Next Door” and the iconic title number, this is the perfect finale to our 100th season, and will evoke nothing but love and pride…right here in St. Louis. The seven shows in the 2018 Muny season are: Jerome Robbins’ Broadway (June 11-17), The Wiz (June 19-25), Singin’ in the Rain (June 27-July 3), Jersey Boys (July 9-16), Annie (July 18-25), Gypsy (July 27-August 2) and Meet Me In St. Louis (August 4-12). For more information visit muny.org. Season tickets are available now. Single tickets will go on sale May 7, 2018. Muny gift cards for the 100th season are now available online and at The Muny Box Office. For more information, visit muny.org or call (314) 361-1900. Wo r l d Wi d e Te c h n o l o g y (WWT) and The Steward Family Foundation have once again made a leadership gift to continue as the Muny’s 2018 Season Presenting Sponsor. They became the first overall season sponsor in the history of The Muny in 2014 and continue that role through 2018. The Muny’s mission is to e n r i c h l i v e s b y p ro d u c i n g exceptional musical theatre, accessible to all, while continuing its remarkable tradition in Forest Park. As the nation’s largest outdoor musical theatre, we produce seven world-class musicals each year and welcome over 370,000 theatregoers over our nine-week season. Now celebrating 100 seasons in St. Louis, The Muny remains one of the premier institutions in musical theatre. For more information about The Muny, visit muny.org.

The Muny set for 100th season The Muny announced today its epic seven-show 100th season in Forest Park. Befitting this historic year, The Muny will be the first theatre in the U.S. to produce two Tony award-winning Best Musicals: Jersey Boys and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway. The exhilarating season also includes two great family classics: an all-time Muny family favorite, Annie, and, in its first production in 36 years, The Wiz. Joining these four shows will be two great American musical classics: Gypsy and Singin’ in the Rain. And finally, in its long-awaited return to the Muny stage after nine years, a show dear to the hearts of so many St. Louisans, Meet Me In St. Louis. The seven shows are: Annie, Gypsy, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Jersey Boys, Meet Me In St. Louis, Singin’ in the Rain and The Wiz. “This is an incredible moment in our history to celebrate a 100th season, and I think these titles are a great nod to our history and future,” said Muny President and CEO Denny Reagan. “I’m excited to share with our audiences the memories and thrills these shows will bring next summer.” “We wanted to go big for the 100th, and this season is really big,” said Muny Artistic Director and Executive Producer Mike Isaacson. “It promises so many great nights of beauty, power, joy and passion. These seven shows celebrate The Muny’s august past and point us toward our incredible future. Here we go!” Muny gift cards for the 100th season are now available online and at The Muny Box Office. For more information, visit muny.org or call (314) 361-1900.

Cooking classes helping addicts BOSTON (AP) — At Boston Medical Center, patients recovering from addiction are getting healthier one slab, stick and cube at a time. For years, the hospital has offered cooking classes tailored to specific medical conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, and it runs a food pantry for lowincome patients who are prescribed fresh food as part of their treatments. The newest class is “Cooking for Recovery” and is part of a growing trend toward taking a more comprehensive approach to treating addiction. “Good health care is about more than just direct clinical services,” said Michael Botticelli, executive director of the medical center’s Grayken Center for Addiction and former director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. “Recovery is not just about stopping the use of alcohol and drugs, it’s about how do we return people to a sense of wellness and a sense of well-being.” On a recent Thursday, dietitian and chef Tracy Burg kept up a steady stream of advice while guiding participants through a chicken, pasta and vegetable dish. Felicha Young joined her behind the demonstration kitchen’s cooktop, making quick work of a zucchini following Burg’s instructions to slice it first into slabs, followed by stick shapes and finally crisp, cross-cut cubes. One end of the counter was piled with “mood enhancers” — vegetables and whole grains — while the other sported a sign listing “mood depressors” such as candy, soda and fried food. “You don’t want to be living on French fries,” Burg said. While addiction can leave bodies depleted of vital nutrients, self-care and good nutrition often are overlooked during recovery, Burg said. And many crave sweets that activate the same areas of the brain targeted by drugs, she said, which can lead to rising and falling blood sugar levels, weight gain, depression and possible relapse. “It’s a vicious cycle,” she said. One cooking class participant told Burg she ate two bags of cotton candy every day, plus a third at night to “help her sleep.” Burg’s goal is to nudge participants into making healthy choices, such as brown rice or whole grains that make them feel fuller longer while also delivering healing nutrients. “A lot of people who are getting over alcoholism or drug addiction, their gut is a wreck because all their healthy bacteria has been destroyed,” she said. “But eating fiber is actually feeding the healthy bacteria in the gut ... and it helps to bring back that healthy microbiome. So nutrition plays many roles in the healing process.” Young, who has been in recovery for about a year and a half, heard about the cooking class from her doctor. “I’m pretty familiar with the kitchen, but I wanted to go there to get more tips on how to bring out flavor,” she said. “As long as I get to participate, I enjoy it. Just sitting there watching would be boring for me.” Young said the hospital’s addiction treatment program has helped her get her life back on track, but until she attended the class, she hadn’t given much thought to how healthy eating could impact that. “I didn’t even know that it could be part of recovery,” she said.
