Missouri Ballet Theatre to present "Cinderella" For The Edge

M

issouri Ballet Theatre presents Cinderella, a fulllength ballet, May 14 & 15, 2016 at the Edison Theatre on the campus of Washington University in Saint Louis.

A wonderfully entertaining ballet suitable for the entire family, Cinderlla is the perfect way to introduce young children to the grace and beauty of classical dance through this familiar fairy tale.

Missouri Ballet Theatre’s latest rendition of Cinderella incorporates beautiful sets and scenery, as well as new dance costumes that enhance the visual experience. Everyone’s favorite princess story comes to life on the Edison stage through gorgeous dancing – complete with wicked stepsisters that you love to hate.

While the story behind Cinderella is a beloved classic, this production features a lighthearted take on the roles of the evil Stepmother and the wicked Step Sisters. This comedic rendition will feature a male guest artist in the role of the Stepmother.

The company’s professional dancers will be augmented by their Community Cast - including approximately 65 local children from across the Missouri and Illinois region.

Missouri Ballet Theatre will be offering their popular Cinderella Parade prior to the matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday. The Cinderella Parade is the perfect way to kick off the afternoon at the ballet. Guests will arrive at the theater early and step onto the Edison stage to meet the cast of characters, see the gorgeous costumes up close and take photos with their favorite characters. The Parade continues with a backstage tour to see where all the action really takes place. The tour finishes with a fairy tale party filled with sweet treats for all the guests. Create a truly memorable experience for your family and join Missouri Ballet Theatre for the Cinderella Parade.

Cinderella Performances at Edison Theatre will take place: • Saturday, May 14th at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm • Sunday, May 15th at 2:00 pm • The Cinderella Parade begins promptly at 12:30 pm, and will start in the Edison lobby.

Tickets to Cinderella at Edison Theatre are on sale now for $35 each for reserved seating. Guests can also purchase tickets to the Cinderella Parade for an additional $25 each.

Parents attending the Cinderella Parade will need to purchase a ticket as well, and children must be accompanied by at least one adult.

The Fox to come alive with "The Sound of Music" For The Edge Casting has been announced for the brand new production of "The Sound of Music", directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien. This lavish new production premieres in St. Louis at the Fabulous Fox Theatre April 26 – May 8.

by Erich Erich Schuett (Friedrich), Maria Knasel (Louisa), Quinn Erickson (Kurt), Svea Johnson (Brigitta), Mackenzie Currie (Marta) and Audrey Bennett Gretl).

And introducing Jack O’Brien’s brand new discovery, Kerstin Anderson s Maria Rainer. A current student at Pace University, Ms. Anderson won the coveted role from hundreds who auditioned.

This will be her first national tour.

Director O’Brien had this to say about his leading lady, “in looking over a great American classic, like "The Sound of Music", sometimes you stumble on something you wonder if anyone ever saw before.

For instance, I was privileged to actually see Mary Martin in the original production — as I was myself just a junior at the University of Michigan. She was a great star, and she was giving a ‘great star’s’ performance. She was at the apex of her career, and she was both brilliant and 46 years old.

“But in reading it privately, something caught my eye: Maria is probably, as a postulant, no more than six or seven years older than Liesl! She may be many things — a country lass, a climber-of-trees, a young renegade, but she is clearly NOT an established star! How interesting!

“I’ve always believed Maria was a “star-making” part, rather than the leading role we remember from the movies; so I went looking for someone with star-making magic,” says director O’Brien. “And in through the audition door one day walked Kerstin Anderson, still studying at Pace University in New York. She opened her mouth, she sang and the tears welled up in my eyes. If ever there were an enchanting young woman standing on the brink of discovery — this was it! And now, the discovery is about to be all of ours!”

The Arts Artistic adventures Oriental carpet display planned

The Saint Louis Art Museum is hosting a new exhibit, The Carpet and the Connoisseur.

During the early 20th century, St. Louis businessman James F. Ballard became one of the country’s top collectors of Oriental carpets. An unlikely collector, he was celebrated for his approach to collecting Anatolian carpets from provincial centers in Turkey at a time when most other rug connoisseurs were acquiring the classical Persian and Indian carpets. In addition to his passion for collecting, Ballard was also a patient teacher, inveterate traveler, and, above all, the first Oriental carpet enthusiast to acknowledge the importance of Turkish influence on the history of the pile carpet.

Ballard ultimately divided his collection of carpets between The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1922 and the Saint Louis Art Museum in 1929. Another group of carpets were added to the St. Louis collection through a later donation by his daughter, Nellie Ballard White, in 1972.

As a result of these two gifts, the Museum has amassed a collection of Oriental rugs recognized as one of the most significant collections in the world.

The Carpet and the Connoisseur will highlight 51 carpets from the Ballard collection, including three Cairene rugs, a Spanish rug, and examples of “Lotto” and small-pattern “Holbein” carpets, all important examples of works from the late15th and 16th centuries. Ballard also acquired two 19th-century Persian pleasure tents that were used for outdoor gatherings. These are also featured in the exhibition.

The Carpet and the Connoisseur is guest-curated by Walter B. Denny, University of Massachusetts distinguished professor in Islamic Arts in collaboration with Philip Hu, associate curator of Asian art, and textile conservator Zoe Perkins. The Carpet and the Connoisseur will be on view in the Main Exhibition Galleries from March 6 through May 8, 2016.

"Zootopia"

Just when it was looking like animated animal movies had run out of anything original to say, along comes the smartly amusing, crisply relevant "Zootopia" to handily demonstrate there's still plenty of bite left in the anthropomorphic CG menagerie.

Boasting a pitch perfect voice cast led by a terrific Ginnifer Goodwin as a righteous rural rabbit who becomes the first cotton-tailed police recruit in the mammal-centric city of "Zootopia," the 3-D caper expertly combines keen wit with a gentle, and very timely, message of inclusivity and empowerment.

The engaging result should easily appeal to all creatures great and small, giving this premium Walt Disney Animation Studios effort a paw up on spring break entertainment, not to mention the summer arrival of Universal's animated "The Secret Life of Pets."

As the Zootopia Police Department's sole bunny officer, idealistic Judy Hopps (Goodwin) discovers that breaking barriers can be an uphill climb, especially when the other cops in the force are mainly of the more imposing elephant/rhino/ hippo ilk.

Although intrepid Judy can't wait to collar her first perp, Bogo (Idris Elba), Precinct 1's gruff cape buffalo police chief, has other plans, assigning her to parking duty, where she proves her worth by writing 200 tickets before noon on her first day.

RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some thematic elements, rude humor and action."

"Whiskey Tango Foxtrot"

Journalism is having a moment at the movies.

Days after the journalism procedural "Spotlight" won best picture at the Academy Awards, Paramount is releasing "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot," a comic drama about war reporting with Tina Fey as a rookie correspondent finding her way.

Fey plays Kim Baker, a 40-something New York TV producer summoned to a meeting of "unmarried, childless personnel" to consider a three-month assignment embedded with U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Three months becomes three years, 2004 to 2006, as Baker evolves from clueless newbie to savvy reporter, navigating the country's repressive cultural norms and the off-the-clock lifestyle of drunken debauchery shared by her expatriate colleagues.

Longtime Fey collaborator Robert Carlock ("30 Rock," ''Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt") based the screenplay on former Chicago Tribute reporter Kim Barker's memoir "The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan."

If "finding yourself" in your 40s is a cinematic cliché, "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" is guilty. And it will surely be criticized for casting white actors as key Afghan characters.

But the film offers a fresh look at the adrenaline-laced lifestyle of war correspondents and a timely criticism of TV news. And it delivers some laughs, too.

Fey's Baker is sorely unprepared for her new circumstances.

It's like she's even lost her New York smarts when she takes out a wad of American cash on a busy Kabul street. She forgets her headscarf and barges into places where women aren't allowed.

Her translator, Fahim (Christopher Abbot), tries to protect her in the field, while fellow journalist Tanya Vanderpoel (Margot Robbie) guides her through the rowdy ex-pat social scene.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "pervasive language, some sexual content, drug use and violent war images." Running time: RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes.

"Brothers Grimsby"

Be suspect of movies that are infamous before they even hit theaters.

The "they did WHAT" anticipatory glee is generally bound to be a letdown — especially when the big joke is someone getting a disease. In the off-chance that you've managed to stay blissfully unaware of the gag, I won't go into any more specifics. Needless to say, it does indeed happen, it is brazen, and it will leave you dumbfounded.

Whether or not the joke will also elicit a laugh is the big question, though. It's one that applies to much of the humor in the movie, too, which starts out with a Bill Cosby jab and steamrolls on from there.

The plot finds a sweet-hearted dimwitted working class Northern Londoner (Sacha Baron Cohen's Nobby) reunited with his younger brother Sebastian (Mark Strong) after 28 years apart. Sebastian is now a top spy and assassin, with a hardcore shaved head to match his ruthless attitude.

Nobby's ill-timed reunion with his long-lost kin puts Sebastian's job, and life, in jeopardy — tethering the two for the remainder of the movie as they try to clear Sebastian's name and save the world.

The jester and the brain pairing is a time-tested formula that on paper seems pretty foolproof. The way it's carried out here, however, feels plucked from a 1990s movie that's still experimenting with the novelty of gross-out humor, know-it-all storytelling, and just how far you can coast on the charisma of a star.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong crude sexual content, graphic nudity, violence, language, and some drug use."

RUNNING TIME: 83 minutes.

"Eye in the Sky"

Omniscient high-definition views from above have done nothing to penetrate the fog of war in Gavin Hood's drone drama "Eye in the Sky." It's a lean, Lumet-like thriller that puts the moral calculus of drone warfare in its crosshairs. Playing out compellingly in real time, a strike against Somali terrorists in Nairobi is plotted by the hawkish, U.K.-based Col. Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren), whose operation involves pilots, politicians and military command in various digitally linked remote locations, from the boardroom to the toilet.

Drones have begun to reshape the war movie, and will doubtless continue to proliferate on our screens just as they have over Middle Eastern skies. "Eye in the Sky" follows last year's very solid "Good Kill," starring Ethan Hawke as a drone pilot based in Las Vegas. Director Andrew Niccol's aim was principally about the psychological toll such disconnected battles take on its far-removed soldiers.

Hood more thoroughly utilizes the new perspectives drones afford to filmmakers. While much of the it is composed of faces in front of computer screens, some of the film's most remarkable images come from the view of a hovering drone or — most impressively — a remote-controlled beetle that flutters right into the suspects' lair, alighting on the rafters to provide a staggering close-up, whether Mr. DeMille is ready or not.

With such supreme powers of surveillance, Powell and her colleagues (including the ever-droll Alan Rickman, in one of his last performances, as a British general) have become accustomed to a previously unmatched level of certainty — or so they would like to think.

The mission is to apprehend a handful of highly ranked terrorists, but when the trio — two radicalized British nationals and an American — are seen preparing vests for a suicide attack, the plan is ratcheted up from "capture" to "kill."

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some violent images and language."

RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes.

"The Divergent Series: Allegiant"

In "Allegiant," the latest installment of "The Divergent Series" (three out of four), dystopian Chicago might be in disarray, but it's also become as dull as our heroine Tris' shapeless, grey Abnegation frocks from the first pic. Unless the filmmakers really try to shake things up for the next and final film, this series might just end up being as forgettable as those duds, too.

And really, this is where things should start getting interesting and urgent. The faction system fell in the last one, "Insurgent," also directed by Robert Schwentke, and with it all of those senseless names — Abnegation, Candor, Dauntless, etc. Now they're trying to start a new society, but, it turns out Evelyn (Naomi Watts) and her band of punk rock factionless revolutionaries didn't exactly have a theory of governance in place when they decided to storm Chicago.

So, she begins with probably the worst possible decision — killing off many of those who were loyal to the fallen leader Jeanine (who was played by Kate Winslet). This leads to a rift with Octavia Spencer's Johanna, and they go to war.

But that's all a side show to the exploits of Shailene Woodley's Tris and Theo James' Four who decide to escape the city along with a few others (Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, and Ansel Elgort). In the last movie, Tris learned that there was life outside of the walls and they resolve to find out what that means with all the casualness of a couple of urbanites deciding to try out that new brunch spot two neighborhoods over.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense violence and action, thematic elements, and some partial nudity."

RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes.

'Miracles From Heaven'

The rise of the so-called "faith-based film" — typically lowbudget films that are almost uniformly evangelical — has occurred largely in a bubble of its own like a sheltering harbor for Christian believers at that heathen meeting place: the multiplex.

"Miracles From Heaven," a film whose title even Hallmark would blush at, is an attempt to expand the reach of the faithbased film a little beyond the flock. To do so, it has armed itself with two things: the star power of Jennifer Garner and a full barrage of sentimentality. The fate of a sick 10-year-old girl precariously hangs in the balance.

The film, directed by Patricia Riggen ("The 33"), is adapted from the memoir of Christy Beam, whose Texas family is jolted when one of their three daughters, Anna (played sweetly

by Kylie Rogers), is found to suffer from a rare disorder that leaves her chronically unable to digest food.

"Based on real events," is how the film presents itself, and some of its best qualities are in depicting elements of life — the frightful anxiety of parenthood, the struggle to find meaning amid hardship — that don't often make it into the movies.

But the course of "Miracles From Heaven" is never in doubt.

When Garner as Beam intones in the opening voiceover questions of where miracles come from, the film's title has already stated the answer. Just as certainly will it turn out well in the end for Christy, who strays from her faith while watching her daughter's belly painfully swell, and Anna, whose health deteriorates while the family desperately searches for a knowing doctor.

So, she begins with probably the worst possible decision — killing off many of those who were loyal to the fallen leader Jeanine (who was played by Kate Winslet). This leads to a rift with Octavia Spencer's Johanna, and they go to war.

But that's all a side show to the exploits of Shailene Woodley's Tris and Theo James' Four who decide to escape the city along with a few others (Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, and Ansel Elgort). In the last movie, Tris learned that there was life outside of the walls

and they resolve to find out what that means with all the casualness of a couple of urbanites deciding to try out that new brunch spot two neighborhoods over.

What is out there, located at the remains of Chicago's O'Hare airport (which is only about 15 miles away from the city, by the way), is a headquarters run by a man named David (Jeff Daniels). He likes Tris because she's genetically "pure," while everyone else in the Chicago experiment is "damaged" and he wants to show her off to some other committee in Providence to prove that the system can work.

And it's here where things might start to feel a little jumbled for anyone who has engaged with the modern sci-fi dystopias of the past few years. The O'Hare outpost looks like "Oblivion," their genetic perfection

goals sound like "The Giver" meets "Gattaca," the Russian doll world feels like "The Maze Runner" and the heroine like a less lively version of "The Hunger Games'" Katniss.

But unlike Katniss, who wore her trauma and moral confusion and apprehension on her face, Woodley's Tris just plays it cool and affectless. She's never ruffled by anything and we're never riled up on her behalf. Four, too, just pouts and broods his way through the film, which has become the de facto mode for YA heartthrobs ever since Edward skulked his way into that "Twilight" cafeteria.

It's not completely the fault of the actors — the story takes itself so, so seriously that even Miles Teller's minimally amusing snarky asides feel like treasures in this leaden dud just because he gives some life to them.

"The Bronze" an adequately made film

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge What does it take to make a good movie in Hollywood? As best I can tell, you can winnow it down to as little as three things: a great idea, a lot of dedicated craftsmen, and a big pile of money. Surely there’s more involved, but I’m going to keep this discussion simple for now. My hypothesis for you this week is that if you do any of these three things exceptionally well, you’ll get a movie that appeals to someone, maybe enough someones to make it a hit or get it a reputation or stick with some high school kid and inspire him to make a great movie one day.

Moviemaking is a numbers game.

Now let’s say you have that great idea – no small feat for someone who’s ever stared at a blank page and

wondered just what the heck they were doing sitting at a keyboard in the first place. Maybe your idea is a heist film (yea!) or a Western (this man can dare to dream!!). Or maybe it’s a factually-based story about someone specific. Let’s use the recent example of “Eddie the Eagle”, a perfectly charming little film about the story of Michael Edwards, a persistent ski jumper from England that took the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary by storm with his tenacity and sheer joyful approach. He might have finished in last place (really, he did), but there’s still a good chance that someone went to that movie and had a great time. If you were my mother, you might even have had tears in your eyes as the lights were coming up (true story). Score one for the storytellers.

Secondarily, but second to none, is your production team. There have been

thousands of great movies made over the years. Some were great because of acting and character interaction. Others have surprises or lessons baked into them. Even great filmmakers have lent their names to their work and leveraged response just a little bit higher because of the attachment. I don’t know if I need to use a recent example for this point. “The Shawshank Redemption" is a great example of how to make a perfect movie where every piece just fits.

My third general necessity is cash.

A studio head has to be successfully made to understand that their investment is a sure thing, which no one can ever really do. Look at the new release this weekend in the “Divergent” series, “Allegiant”. This movie is chock full of IMAX special effects, actors that came built into the franchise, and is the third films in a

series that was always going to be four. And what happened? Nobody cared much about it. For every disappointment, though, are plenty of other big budget “gems” that fool enough of the people enough of the time. Just ask those folks behind Marvel’s winning streak.

So what does all this have to do with anything? I wanted to go extraordinarily out of my way to show a correlation between how to make a great film (or a bad one that postures well) and the new release I saw called “The Bronze”. Melissa Rauch of CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” stars as Hope, a Kerri Strug-esque Olympic gymnast who is trading on the teensy bit of fame she scored winning her third place medal years earlier to get free pizza at Sbarro and a good deal on sneakers at the mall near her father’s Ohio home. She’s

not likable, incredibly foul-mouthed, and an overtly sexualized character that Rauch’s fans might not really like her for.

Hope is content to be a big fish in her small town, continuing to use that one famous moment from the past to her advantage, but fate has something more in store for her. She’s given a chance to coach an upcoming talent (Haley Lu Richardson) that will likely far surpass anything she herself might have once been capable of. The interplay between the two leads is a chuckle. Personally, I found it a riot. A great idea. Adequately made. No real financing to speak of. Not bad.

"The Bronze" runs 108 minutes and is rated R for strong sexual content, graphic nudity, language throughout, and some drug use. I give this film three stars out of four.

People For The Edge Kick-off spring and celebrate the Missouri Botanical Garden’s seasonal openings during the “Meet Me Outdoors in St. Louis” weekend April 2-3. Activities include the seasonal reopenings of the Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden, Tower Grove House, Café Flora and tram rides. The newly renovated Brookings Exploration Center and the new PlantLab, a greenhouselike space for hands-on learning will also open. There will be exhibitors on a variety of nature-related topics and an opportunity to take home a native tree. Families can even sign a pledge to encourage them to explore the outdoors this spring and summer at the Garden and its family of attractions, as well as other sites in the St. Louis region. Guests can also register for hands-on wildlife-habitat building sessions.

The renovated Brookings Ex plora t i on C e n t e r (fo r m e r l y Brookings Interpretive Center) is located between the Climatron® and Shoenberg Temperate House in Edward Jones Hall and features a 4,300-square-foot space for children and families to explore, create, discover and connect with one another. After being closed for several months for renovation, it opens to the public on April 2.

The center features educational games, reading nooks, craft/ coloring tables and costume play.

A new vestibule area, designed to make visits more comfortable and accessible, will feature a family restroom, and a Calming Corner that will serve as a place for families with children needing quite time and a comfortable room for nursing mothers. The 1,100 square-foot PlantLab is a greenhouse-like classroom for experiential learning for visitors of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Visitors can get a better understanding of the Garden’s plant science work, from propagating to seed banking to taxonomy and extracting DNA. Tours and interactive experiences will be available throughout the weekend.

There is no additional charge for admission to Brookings or the

PlantLab. As part of the weekend celebration, spring into the 10th season of fun at the Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden. Families can explore the great outdoors and experience all the Children’s Garden has to offer: a waterfall, steamboat, cave, rope bridges, tree house and more! Opening weekend activities at the Children’s Garden are available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days and are sponsored by Macy's. Families can visit the potting station and choose a leafy green edible plant to pot and take home to add to their own gardens. Special guests include live birds from the World Bird Sanctuary, and Finn, the Children’s Garden friendly frog mascot who will roam the Garden and greet visitors. Spring-inspired

face painting will also be available both days. Wildheart, with Emmy award-winning entertainers Jan & George Syrigos will perform both days. Admission to the Children’s Garden is $5 for children ages 3 to 12. Adults are included with general Garden admission. St. Louis City and County residents receive free admission to the Children’s Garden on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Garden will give away tree saplings to visitors while supplies last beginning Friday, April 1 as part of the state’s Arbor Day celebration and throughout the weekend for the Meet Me Outdoors in St. Louis Festival. All five species offered this year are native to Missouri. Species distributed include: Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida), River birch (Betula nigra), Pawpaw

(Asimina tribola), Chinkapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii), Ozark witch hazel (Hamamelis vernalis) and Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis). Saplings will be available at the Kemper Center for Home Gardening from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or while supplies last. Master Gardeners and representatives from the St. Louis Arborists Association will also be present to answer questions and give advice on planting trees in the spring.

Visitors to the Meet Me Outdoors in St. Louis Festival will also have a chance to interact with experts and exhibitors from local conservation agencies and park systems throughout the weekend in Ridgway Visitor Center. Additional learning opportunities are available through classes that weekend.

This performance will be the last time Garrison Keillor will host A Prairie Home Companion in St. Louis.

If you showed up on July 6, 1974, at the Janet Wallace Auditorium at Macalester College in Saint Paul and plunked down your $1 admission (50 cents for kids) to attend the very first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, you were in select company. There were about 12 people in the audience. But those in attendance thought there were worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon, so Garrison Keillor and the APHC team went on to produce close to 500 live shows in the first 10 years alone. There were broadcasts from this venue and that, until March 4, 1978, when the show moved to The World Theater, a lovely, crumbling building that was one plaster crack away from the wrecking ball. (Now fully renovated and renamed The Fitzgerald, it is the show’s home base.)

In June of 1987, APHC ended for a while. Garrison thought it was a good idea at the time, but only two years later, the show was back, based in New York and called American Radio Company of the Air. But there’s no place like home.

So in 1992, it was back to Minnesota and, soon after, back to the old name:A Prairie Home Companion.

Garrison recalls, “When the show started, it was something funny to do with my friends, and then it became an achievement that I hoped would be successful, and now it’s a good way of life.”

Garrison Keillor was born in 1942 in Anoka, Minnesota, and began his radio career as a freshman at the University of Minnesota, from which he graduated in 1966.

He went to work for Minnesota Public Radio in 1969, and on July 6, 1974, he hosted the first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion in St. Paul. Today, some 4 million listeners on more than 600 public radio stations coast to coast and beyond tune in to the show each week. Keillor has been honored with Grammy, ACE, and George Foster Peabody awards, the National Humanities Medal, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

His many books include Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance, Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny, and The Keillor Reader (Viking).

He is the host of the daily program

The Writer ’s Almanac and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently,Good Poems: American Places (Viking). In 2006, Keillor played himself in the movie adaptation of his show, a film directed by Robert Altman. He has two grandsons and in 2007, he opened an independent bookstore, Common Good Books, in St. Paul, the city where he and his wife and daughter make their home.

The Spirit of St. Louis Air Show & STEM Expo and the Blue Angels return to the area after the previous air show in May 2014.

The Blue Angels perform before an estimated 11 million spectators each show season. The 2014 Spirit of St. Louis Air Show & STEM Expo attracted more than 125,000 people to the event, with many more watching from surrounding vantage points.

The 2016 show season will mark the Blue Angels’ 70th anniversary of its first demonstration in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1946.

Fair Saint Louis 2016 will feature The Fairway, a unique shopping experience that invites regional artisans and vendors to sell their products to fairgoers at Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Biggest Birthday Party. Vendor applications are currently being accepted for the 2016 event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are thrilled to add The Fairway to the many enjoyable aspects of Fair Saint Louis,â&#x20AC;? says Julie Donnelly, Event Marketing Manager, Fair St. Louis Foundation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are proud to support regional artisans and merchants, and to offer a place within the Fair for festivalgoers to relax and shop.â&#x20AC;?

Fair Saint Louis will take place July 2-4, 2016, in Forest Park. The Fairway will operate from 1 to 10 p.m. on Lagoon Drive, west of the Grand Basin. Approximately 50,000100,000 people attend the Fair each day.

Vendors should apply in one of the following categories: â&#x20AC;˘ Artisan or Crafter: Vendors must make their products with their own hands. Products must be unique. â&#x20AC;˘ Merchandise Vendor: Vendors must sell merchandise that they do not personally make by hand. â&#x20AC;˘ Roaming Vendor: Vendors (limited to one or two people per vendor) can walk the grounds selling their merchandise. They will not receive a tent, table and chairs or electric; but will receive vendor credentials, parking pass and a listing on the Fair Saint Louis website.

Applicants should review terms and conditions, including allowable merchandise, booth fees and insurance, power and lighting logistics and more, before applying. The application deadline for The Fairway is April 29, 2016.

There is a $25 application fee upon submission.

Camp KangaZoo returning

From the ever-popular Camp KangaZoo to individual programs for all ages, the Saint Louis Zooâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Education Department has classes, overnight experiences and daytime adventures for everyone in the family.

Camp KangaZoo Camp KangaZoo campers can choose to attend one or two full-day camps â&#x20AC;&#x201D; "Aquatic Animalsâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Animals Everywhere.â&#x20AC;? MondayThursday, campers will play games, meet animals, enjoy sing-alongs and view dynamic Zoo exhibits. On Thursday nights, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll sleep at the Zoo and wake up with the birds!

Camp KangaZoo scholarships are available for families with financial need.

New this year, the Zoo is offering morning and afternoon half-day camp sessions for kids entering grades 1-5.

Younger children can hop "out of the pouch" and into the Zoo at Camp Joey. Half-day and full-day sessions are available for children who are at least 4 years old and entering kindergarten. Teen Camp is available for youth entering grades 7-9 and Teen Camp II, held at Shaw Nature Reserve, for 8-10 graders.

Overnights Families can attend Wake Up With the Rays, Under the Sea-lion or From Dusk Til Dawn overnight programs.

Summer Programs Zoo programs for young children and youth keep growing minds sharp in the lazy summer months.

The Zoo offers a variety of animal topics for various ages. Kids can learn about birds, mammals and reptiles, see stingrays up close, examine dinosaur fossils, create animal habitats, sing animal songs, identify animal tracks, touch biofacts, tour the Zoo and meet the animals.

For youth in grades 2-8, the Zoo offers Keeper-for-a-Day at the Emerson Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Zoo, A Day with the Rays and Advanced Day with the Rays at Stingrays at Caribbean Cove presented by Mercy Kids. Engineerfor-a-Day is available for those 7 years old and up. A Junior Sea Lion Trainer program is available for ages 10 to adult.

Scouts can learn about animals and sleep under the stars while working toward fulfilling their badge requirements at the Snooze at the Zoo programs. Scout overnight programs are for Cub Scouts, Webelos, Girl Scout Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes.

Adult programs include evening safari tours, wine and cheese night prowls, animal painting, overnights and more.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis is urging nations "to open their hearts and their doors" to migrants.

At his general audience Wednesday in St. Peter's Square, Francis said people wonder where God is when refugees are living "in a dramatic exile situation far away from their homeland, with the image of the rubble of their houses still in their eyes, fear in their heart, and often unfortunately the pain for the loss of their beloved ones."

The European Union has told member nations that they "urgently need to deliver" on commitments to settle refugees on the continent, as the number of arrivals in Greece alone reached the million mark since the start of 2015.

The EU's migration commissioner warned that the humanitarian situation in Greece is "getting more acute every day" after newly-built shelters there exceeded capacity.

The warning came on the eve of a summit of leaders from the EU and Turkey to try and limit the number of refugees and migrants entering Europe.

Priest convicted of theft given more time to return money

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) — A Roman Catholic priest convicted of stealing his parish's money to support a gambling addiction has been given more time to pay back the money.

The Rev. John Regan had been scheduled for a probation

revocation hearing in April because he has yet to repay the nearly $300,000 he stole from St. Walter Catholic Church in Roselle. He served there as the pastor until 2009.

Regan's attorney, Jack Donahue, told Judge John Kinsella during a DuPage County Circuit Court hearing that he met with prosecutors last week and they agreed to cancel the hearing. In return, Regan will have a final reporting date in 2019.

At his sentencing in 2011, Regan said he had struggled with a gambling addiction. He is currently assigned to a parish in the Joliet diocese.

Justice Department probing town's denial to build mosque

BERNARDS TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Federal officials are investigating whether a New Jersey town violated religious freedom laws when it denied a group's plan to build a mosque.

News of the Justice Department's investigation comes a week after the group sued the town in federal court, alleging religious infringement.

Bernards Township Mayor Carol Bianchi told The Associated Press that planning board members were ethical and denied the mosque based solely on land-use considerations. She said the town will cooperate with the probe.

Adeel Magni, an attorney representing the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge, declined comment on the investigation. The group's founder, Mohmmad Chaundry, is a longtime Bernards resident who once served on the town's school board.

Bernards is about an hour west of Manhattan.

'Spotlight' company settles complaint over made-up dialogue

BOSTON (AP) — The distributor of the Oscar-winning film "Spotlight" has acknowledged that filmmakers fabricated dialogue that made it appear as if a Boston College spokesman downplayed the extent of the Catholic priest sex abuse scandal.

Jack Dunn, a top spokesman at the Catholic university, said he became physically ill when he saw the film and retained a lawyer to demand that the scene be removed.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea's highest court has sentenced an American tourist to 15 years in prison with hard labor for subversion, weeks after he confessed that he had tried to steal a propaganda banner.

Otto Warmbier, a 21-year-old University of Virginia undergraduate student, was convicted and sentenced in a onehour trial in North Korea's Supreme Court.

In a tearful statement made before his trial, Warmbier told a gathering of reporters in Pyongyang he tried to take the banner as a trophy for the mother of a friend who said she wanted to put it up in her church. At his trial, Warmbier said he had been "used and manipulated."

In previous cases, people who have been detained in North Korea and made a public confession often recant those statements after their release.

Lyfe Jennings Lyfe Jennings (born Chester Jennings in Toledo, Ohio) is an African American R&B and soul singer-songwriter, record producer, and instrumentalist.

He plays the guitar, bass, and piano which he integrates into his music. Jennings began singing a t a y o u n g a g e i n a To l e d o chu rch ch oir. He l at e r joi ne d a group called The Dotsons with two of his cousins and his older brother, Jay. The group separated in the early 1990s, and

He has cited Erykah Badu’s 1997 album Baduizm as one of the reasons for his rediscovery. Jennings was released from prison in December 2002 and started to pursue a solo career in music. In January 2003, he performed in Harlem at the Showtime at The Apollo. The same year, he also independently released his first EP, What Is L o v e . To f u r t h e r p u r s u e h i s career, Jennings moved to New York City where he performed at rapper Nelly’s concert at Radio City Music Hall, at an NAACP convention where he performed an original song called “Thank God for the NAACP”, and at the Cafeteria in Chelsea, Manhattan during the blackout on August 14.

He signed with Columbia Records and released his debut album Lyfe 268-192 (268-192 was his inmate number) in August 2004. His first single was Stick Up Kid, which didn’t see much success until after the album was released.

The album featured his hit single “Must Be Nice”. Jennings’ second album The Phoenix was released in August 2006. The first single, “S.E.X.”, features Jennings’ protégé, singer LaLa Brown.

The original Kingston Trio, formed in San Francisco in 1957 by Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard, changed the face of pop music, introducing a new take on classic American folk music. Boston to appear in St. Charles

Tom Scholz’s band Boston became an iconic classic rock fixture when they joined the music scene with their self-titled album in 1976.

With over 17 million copies sold, Boston generated hits such as "More Than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," and "Smokin'," rock staples that are still in heavy rotation today.

Their second album, Don't Look Back was another chart-topper that confirmed their place in rock history, followed by Third Stage, which hit #1 on the charts, with the top single of 1986, "Amanda." Austin, TX singer songwriter Joe Pug’s rise has been as improbable as it has been impressive. After dropping out of college and taking on work as a carpenter in Chicago, he got his musical start by providing CDs for his fans to pass along to their friends. This led to a string of sold out shows and a record deal

with Nashville indie Lightning Rod Records (Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver). As he toured behind Messenger (2010) and The Great Despiser (2012) it was with a band that looked as much like a jazz trio as an Americana band.

The following years would have them on the road for over four hundred shows, including stops at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and The Newport Folk Festival. His latest, critically acclaimed album, Windfall, released in 2015, was praised by Rolling Stone with,"...it showcases the singer's unique and achingly honest point of view that spins lyrics into folk poetry."

Peel Wood Fired Pizza in Edwardsville

By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge I've been a big fan of Peel Wood Fired Pizza in Edwardsville since its inception. The gourmet and unique pizza selections are outstanding and the wood fired crusts may be even better.

When Valentine's Day rolled around this year I thought Peel would be a great place to take Kelly for an afternoon meal and get a much needed food review to boot.

We visited the original location at 921 S. Arbor Vitae in Edwardsville.

I'm definitely not the only fan of Peel, because they are flourishing.

They have a second location now at 104 S. Cherry St. in O'Fallon.

At Peel they use a Mugnaini wood burning pizza oven that can reach temperatures of 900 degrees, offering what they call â&#x20AC;&#x153;authentic old world Italian baking.â&#x20AC;? It makes for an awesome experience.

I always go big or go home, so Kelly and I stocked up on our Valentine's Day dinner.

We started with the house wings, which are spun in Peel's signature spicy mustard sauce. I can assure you they were not spicy at all, but that doesn't mean they weren't good.

The chicken wings are prepared in the same wood fired ovens that make the pizza, giving them that great wood-fired taste. The mustard sauce added a really sweet taste to the wings. I'm not a big fan of mustard, this was Kelly's idea to try them, but I must say I was impressed. They quickly transformed me into a fan.

Next on our smorgasbord was the garlic cheese ciabatta bread and boy oh boy. This is a must try when you visit. It consists of sliced ciabatta topped with garlic chive butter, mozzarella cheese and fresh

oregano, then wood fired. You have choices of marinara or parmesan cream for dipping sauces. We went with the parmesan cream.

The ciabatta bread was a great touch with this dish. It was sweet and scrumptious. Add in the mouthwatering parmesan cream sauce oozing over the bread and I have to applaud this appetizer as a Peel all-star.

Finally our main course arrived, which was pizza of course. We wavered on what to try and agreed upon the maple bourbon pork.

had glorious bacon on it.

The maple bourbon pork is comprised of slow roasted pork, house smoked bacon, mozzarella, cheddar cheese, roma tomatoes with a maple bourbon glaze to top it off.

Of course it's all prepared on that sensational wood-fired crust.

I am sad to say I thought it was almost too much with the pork and bacon. It was heaping with toppings and a little bit went a long way.

The maple glaze added a sweet taste to it, which may was a little overwhelming. Kelly agreed with that assessment.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not complaining. I know there are great and delicious options at Peel and there are plenty of others to choose from.

On previous visits I've checked out the coppa, with coppa ham, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and fresh oregano as well as as the wild mushroom with cremini, shitake and oyster mushrooms, fontina cheese, fresh thyme, white truffle oil and parmesan cream and both are outstanding.

The jerk chicken with woodfired chicken, mozzarella cheese,

black beans, mango barbecue glaze, mango and fresh cilantro, the ricotta with Italian sausage, wild mushrooms, ricotta and mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce and the prosciutto with prosciutto, fingerling potatoes, roasted garlic olive oil fontina and parmesan cheeses, roasted garlic and fresh rosemary also grabbed our attention.

If you want to be more adventurous or go with a more common pizza choice, you can build your own. Create your own calzone, too, they are also delicious.

Another great item on the shared plates is the prosciutto involtini, consisting of wood-fired bread filled with prosciutto, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses and basil. It's served with three dipping choices: marinara, parmesan cream and roasted garlic balsamic olive oil.

There is also a soup and salad menu, sandwiches and wood-fired pastas if you want to shift to an option besides pizza.

Be prepared to wait when you visit. To say Peel is popular is an understatement, it gets crowded for sure. You will sit close to your neighbors, but it still offers an intimate setting. Kelly was a fan.

There is a small bar when you enter also where you can get some good drink options. Peel offers a good selection of craft beers, including some Peel originals.

The O'Fallon location includes the recently launched Peel Brewing Co., so they dabble in the craft beer craze to accompany their great food. You can't go wrong with that.

Check them out at peelpizza.com to see everything they have to offer and the hours you can visit. They are open seven days a week and offer dine in only.

Peel should move to the top of the list for destination places to go when you gotta eat.
