People Glennon to discuss topic at SIUE's Arts & Issues event By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge
W
ater. A cheap commodity that Americans take for granted. We don't hesitate to water our lawns, our gardens or wash our cars, and we certainly expect water to flow freely from our home water spigots for our drinking, cooking and waste needs, but internationally renowned water resource expert Robert Glennon says America has a water crisis. Glennon will be addressing this issue on April 2 at SIUE when he presents, “America's Water Crisis and What To Do About It.” Glennon's presentation closes out the SIUE Arts and Issues 30th anniversary season, and his presentation is sponsored by the SIUE Graduate School. Glennon is Regents’ Professor and Morris K. Udall Professor of Law and Public Policy in the Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona. He authored the highly-acclaimed “Water Follies: Groundwater Pumping and the Fate of America’s Fresh Waters” (Island Press, 2002) and “Unquenchable: America's Water Crisis and What To Do About it” in 2009. He's been a guest on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," "Talk of the Nation" with Neal Conan, "The Diane Rehm Show," C-SPAN2’s "Book TV" and numerous National Public Radio shows. He has been a commentator for American Public Media’s "Marketplace." Glennon
has recently been featured in the documentary, "Last Call at the Oasis." In his appearance on “The Daily Show” Glennon points out that we indeed have a water crisis. “It's a matter of valuing water, and we don't appreciate how valuable water is,” he states in the interview. “Partly because we think of water like we do air – that its infinite when in actuality its finite and exhaustible.” Glennon talks about how new energy policies in the U.S. are contributing to the problem which need to be changed as well as Americans casual use of water considering that only 10 percent of the water homeowners use is actually used for cooking and water consumption. The rest goes down the drain, literally, through waste. But are we really in a water crisis? Glennon's Web site points out several events that have occurred in the last two years that Americans should consider when asking this question. Glennon's website states, • Lake Lanier, the water supply for Atlanta, a metropolitan area of 4.5 million people, came within 90 days of going dry. • In the summer of 2009, California is facing mandatory water rationing. Many farmers may be entirely cut off, costing the economy more than $1 billion and putting more than 50,000 people out of work. • In South Carolina, a paper company, Bowater, was forced to shut its doors and lay off hundreds of workers when low flows in the river prevented the company from discharging its waste water.
• In Georgia, Idaho, Montana, and Arizona, regulators denied permits for new coal-fired and nuclear power plants because there was not enough water to run them. • In Riverside County, California, more than a dozen proposed commercial and residential developments were halted, due to a lack of water. • Lake Superior, the earth’s largest freshwater body, was too shallow to float fully-loaded cargo ships. • Decimated salmon runs prompted cancellation of the commercial fishing season off the coast of California and Oregon.
• Excessive groundwater pumping has caused sinkholes, earth fissures, and subsidence in geographic regions that range from California to Florida. While the drought-plagued West has felt the water crisis much more than we do here in the Midwest, it's an issue that will ultimately affect us all. And while water has always been plentiful, it is not an unlimited resource. “We have a crisis, but a crisis is a time of opportunity,” Glennon adds in the interview. “There's a bunch of different remedies for this, but we need the moral compass and the political will to act to keep the crisis
from being a catastrophe.” You won't want to miss this thought-provoking and important environmental presentation when Glennon presents, “America's Water Crisis and What To Do About It” at 7:30 p.m. in the Morris University Center's Meridian Ballroom on the campus of SIUE. Tickets can be purchased online at artsandissues.com or on campus at the Morris University Center welcome desk Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Welcome Desk is closed on Sundays. Call 618-650-5194 for additional information.

“The Munsters” are coming to Greenville Car Show
It may look like Halloween in June as two of the stars of the classic television show “The Munsters” will be the celebrity guests at this year ’s Greenville (Illinois) Graffiti Car Show. Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) and Pat Priest (Marilyn Munster) will meet fans and sign autographs on Saturday, June 20 during the show. Replicas of the Munster Koach and Drag-ula, prominently featured on the program, will also be making an appearance. Patrick was a popular child star who also made guest appearances on many shows of the 1960s including “Bonanza”, “Gunsmoke” and “Rawhide”. Patrick’s work as Eddie, the son of Herman and Lily Munster, made him a TV icon. In the early 1970s Patrick was the star of “Lidsville”, a quirky Saturday morning show produced by Sid and Marty Krofft. Priest took over the role of Marilyn Munster in the show’s 16th episode. Perhaps her best k n o w n ro l e o u t s i d e o f “ T h e Munsters” came in 1967 when she co-starred with Elvis Presley in the movie “Easy Come, Easy Go”. She was also a guest on other iconic programs like “Perry Mason”, “Bewitched” and “Mission Impossible”. Car show organizers are excited to have the Munster Koach and Drag-ula on display that day. The original vehicles were the creation of George Barris, a legendary designer and maker of cars used in television shows and movies. The Munster Koach, Herman Munster’s preferred method of transportation, was created from three Model T bodies. The Drag-ula, built by Grandpa Munster and used by Herman in a classic episode of the show, was made using a real fiberglass coffin. This is a rare

opportunity to see television history in person. Butch Patrick, Pat Priest, the Munster Koach, and the Dragula may also be seen at the Munster ’s Ball, a special event to be held on Friday, June 19 at the American Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville. This ticketed event includes a question and answer session with the stars, photo opportunities, food, and other fun. Ticket information about the Munster’s Ball may be obtained by calling the Greenville Chamber of Commerce at (618) 664-9272. The Greenville Graffiti Car Show on Saturday, June 20 is open to 1990 and older cars and trucks for judging. Vehicles may also be brought for display. For the first time, motorcycles may be brought for display only. Last year’s event attracted nearly 190 cars and trucks to downtown Greenville, Illinois.

People People planner OMNIMAX film captures unseen world
A new giant screen film adventure takes audiences on an extraordinary journey into unseen worlds and hidden dimensions beyond our normal vision to uncover the mysteries of things too fast, too slow, too small or simply invisible. On October 10, 2014, the Saint Louis Science Center ’s OMNIMAX® Theater will premiere Mysteries of the Unseen World, an original production by National Geographic Entertainment and Days End Pictures, narrated by Forest Whitaker. Created by an award-winning veteran film team, the new 40-minute large format experience is produced by Jini Durr (“Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure”) and Lisa Truitt (“Mysteries of Egypt”) and directed by Louis Schwartzberg (“Disney Nature: Wings of Life”). Mysteries of the Unseen World uses innovative high-speed and time-lapse photography, electron microscopy, and nanotechnology, to transport audiences to an enthralling secret world of nature, events and breathtaking phenomena not visible to the naked eye. “Mysteries of the Unseen World has that ‘wow’ factor that will impress adults and children,” said Jackie Mollet, Managing Director Visitor Services at the Saint Louis Science Center. “Seeing these amazing images will give you a new appreciation for the world around us. The technological advances used to capture these images are aweinspiring as well. ” INVISIBLE: We see only a fraction of the millions of wavelengths in the vast electromagnetic spectrum—the rainbow of light waves called visible light. The film shows audiences what it would be life if we had X-ray vision, or infrared vision like a mosquito, how a bee’s eyes see through ultraviolet light, what Gamma rays, microwaves and radio waves show us, and more. TOO SLOW: Ti m e - l a p s e i m a g e s c a p t u re mundane events that happen too slowly for humans to perceive. The film shows plants creeping toward the sun and astonishingly complex “slime mold” searching for food. On a grander scaled, time-lapse allows audiences to see our planet in motion—from the vast and relentless sweep of nature to the restless movement of humanity. TOO FAST: High-speed cameras do the opposite of time-lapse, revealing secrets from the super-fast world of nature. The film shows slow motion sequences of events that happen too quickly for human perception: a rattlesnake strike; drug cymbals reverberating; a Eurasian Eagle Owl, the world’s largest, flexing its wings; a basilisk or Jesus lizard running on the surface of water; popcorn popping; lightning rising upwards from the ground as well as striking from the sky. TOO SMALL: The film also peers into the world of wonders too small for the human eye to see—from the minute structures on a butterfly’s wing and the tiny organisms that inhabit the human body all the way down to nano-scale structures. See how electron microscopes create images that magnify things by as much as a million times—revealing a world that is both bizarre and beautiful. Guess
which unusual image is a fruit fly’s eye, the skin of a shark, a flea on a cat, a tomato stem, an eggshell, and more! Mysteries of the Unseen World then moves from the familiar events of everyday life to the building blocks of matter itself. The filmmakers worked with a 3-D medical animation company to depict the atom-scale realm of nanoscience and potential innovations in nanotechnology. In a complex zoom sequence, the shot moves in on a spider, then a strand of its silk, then into the silk itself where audiences see a bacterium. The camera then zooms even deeper, in on a virus on the bacterium, then into the DNA of the virus and finally into the actual atoms of the DNA. “Mysteries of the Unseen World immerses audiences in mindbending dimensions that enhance our understanding of the planet and inspire people with the wonder and possibilities of science,” said Lisa Truitt, president of National Geographic Entertainment. “The premise of this new giant screen film experience is looking at the world through a variety of imaging technologies that allow audiences to see beyond what they can with the naked eye and gain a new vision of the world around them,” said producer Jini Durr. Mysteries of the Unseen World is funded in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation and generous support from Lockheed Martin and FEI, a manufacturer of electron microscopes. Tickets are on sale at the Saint Louis Science Center. Please visit slsc. org or call 314.289.4424 for advanced sales and group reservations.

The Nazi Party developed a sophisticated propaganda machine that deftly spread lies about its political opponents, Jews, and the need to justify war. But Nazi propaganda was much m o re c o m p l e x t h a n t h a t . F o r the Nazis to achieve power and pursue their racial policies and expansionist war efforts, a much more nuanced picture had to be painted—one that would appeal to broad swaths of the population, not just a fanatical extreme. Featuring rarely seen artifacts, State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda draws visitors into a rich multimedia environment vividly illustrating the insidious allure of much of Nazi propaganda. The exhibition opens at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park on April 11, 2015 and will be on display through September 7, 2015. “Adolf Hitler was an avid student of propaganda and borrowed techniques from the Allies in World War I, his Socialist and Communist rivals, the Italian Fascist Party, as well as modern advertising,” says exhibition curator Steven Luckert. “Drawing upon these models, he successfully marketed the Nazi Party, its ideology, and himself to the German people.” T h e e x h i b i t i o n re v e a l s h o w shortly after World War I, the Nazi Party began to transform itself from an obscure, extremist group into the largest political party in democratic Germany. Hitler early on recognized how propaganda, combined with the use of terror, could help his radical party gain mass support and votes. He personally adapted the ancient symbol of the swastika and the emotive colors of red, black, and white to create the movement’s flag. In doing so, Hitler established a potent visual identity that has branded the Nazi Party ever since. A f t e r s e i z i n g p o w e r, t h e Nazi Party took over all communications in Germany. It marshaled the state’s resources to consolidate power and relentlessly promote its vision of a “racially pure,” utopian Germany that needed to defend itself from those who would destroy it. Jews were cast as the primary enemies, but others, including Roma, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Wi t n e s s e s , a n d m e n t a l l y a n d physically disabled persons, were also portrayed as threats to the “national community.” As Germany pushed the world i n t o w a r, N a z i p r o p a g a n d a rationalized Germany’s territorial expansion as self-defense. Jews were depicted as agents of disease and corruption. The Nazis’ actions against them, in Germany and occupied countries, were promoted as necessary measures to protect the population at large. Admission to State of Deception is free. The Missouri History Museum has been active in the St. Louis community since 1866. Founding members established the organization “for the purpose of saving from oblivion the early history of the city and state.” Today, the Missouri History Museum seeks
to deepen the understanding of past choices, present circumstances, and future possibilities; strengthen the bonds of the community; and facilitate solutions to common problems. Due to its innovative approach to public service, the Missouri History Museum was the first recipient of the Institute of Museum and Library S e r v i c e s N a t i o n a l Aw a rd f o r Museum Services in 1994. The Missouri History Museum offers programs and outreach services, including traveling exhibitions; tours; theatrical and musical presentations; programs for school classes and youth groups; family festivals; special events; workshops; and lectures. The Missouri History Museum is funded by the St. Louis City and County taxpayers through the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District and by private donations. The Museum is open seven days a week with general admission always free. The Missouri History Museum in Forest Park also operates the Library and Research Center at 2 2 5 S o u t h S k i n k e r B o u l e v a rd near the Washington University campus.

Since 1996, the company has expanded the language of hip-hop by cleverly introducing a wide range of influences, ranging from Bollywood, Russian dance and contemporary dance to samba and capoeira to Merzouki’s own expertise in circus and martial arts. By avoiding social stereotypes, Compagnie Käfig has managed to create its own unique style that does not deny its hip-hop origins, but rather enables the hip-hop movement to win over diverse audiences around the world. Take a seat, sit back and enjoy a transformation in modern hip-hop like no other.

People People planner Sheldon to host Hurray for the Riff Raff
Hurray For The Riff Raff is Alynda Lee Segarra, a young woman quickly leaving an indelible stamp on the American folk tradition. Segarra came to international attention in 2012 with her debut album, Look Out Mama, which earned her raves from NPR, The New York Times, Mojo and Paste. Her breakout performance at the 2013 Newport Folk Festival left American Songwriter "awestruck" and solidified her place at the forefront of a new generation of young musicians celebrating and reimagining American roots music. The show is scheduled for 8 p.m. on May 3 in the Sheldon Concert Hall. Single are $25 orchestra/$20 balcony. Call MetroTix at 314-5341111 or visit TheSheldon.org. For more information, call The Sheldon during normal business hours, Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Segarra, a 26-year-old of Puerto Rican descent, grew up in the Bronx, where she developed an early appreciation for doo-wop and Motown music from the neighborhood's longtime residents. It was downtown, though, that she first felt like she found her people, traveling to the Lower East side every Saturday for punk matinees at ABC No Rio. She struck out on her own at 17, first hitching her way to the west coast, then roaming the south before ultimately settling in New Orleans. There, she fell in with a band of fellow travelers, playing washboard and singing before
eventually learning to play a banjo she'd been given in North Carolina .
Fleetwood Mac to appear in St. Louis
Rock legends Fleetwood Mac, who performed two sold-out shows at NYC’s Madison Square Garden earlier this week, have confirmed they will be adding at least 28 more dates to their already scheduled 40-city ON WITH THE SHOW tour. The announcement was made during the band’s live performance this morning on NBC’s TODAY Show where The Mac performed for thousands of adoring fans. The second leg of the tour will begin on Jan. 16, 2015 in St. Paul, Minn. Fleetwood Mac will appear at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Friday, March 27. Tickets available at LiveNation. com, the Ford Box Office at Scottrade Center, Ticketmaster Retail Outlets, or charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000 Fleetwood Mac is currently performing with their five star lineup including the returning songbird Christine McVie who rejoined the band following a 16 year absence. RECENT REVIEWS FOR FLEETWOOD MAC’S ON WITH THE SHOW TOUR “The principal emotion during the nearly 2 1/2-hour performance was the joy of having keyboardist McVie back in this group... She brought high harmonies and several songs, including 'Little Lies,' 'You Make Loving Fun' and the closing 'Songbird,' back into the repertoire. Nicks hasn’t sounded this good since the early ‘90’s. What a rhythm machine and what an articulate
emotional guitarist Buckingham is.” - Minneapolis Star Tribune “It’s still magical. Between Buckingham’s epic guitar solos, Mick Fleetwood’s massive drumming, John McVie’s strong bass work, Nicks’ patented spins to punctuate the lovely 'Gypsy' and Christine McVie’s lush vocals, Fleetwood Mac looked ready to take on what Buckingham has called ‘the next chapter.’” - Newsday
**** (four stars) - The Guardian (UK) "Fleetwood Mac has the intricacy, elegance and underlying punch of its songs..." - The New York Times. “With Christine’s songs back in the set, her calm, angular presence back on the stage, there was an undeniable feeling of rejuvenation... Fleetwood and John McVie on bass reminded concert-goers why the band is

"Maps to the Stars"
"Maps to the Stars" is such a deliriously perfect title for a Hollywood send-up that it's amazing it hasn't been used in that form before. The tritest of all exercises in voyeuristic celebrity worship, that flimsy fold-up guide to the homes of actors and actresses represents the ultimate divide between the "haves" and "have-nots." But David Cronenberg's film is not really about outsiders. Everyone in this portrait of the industry — whether it's a fading star (Julianne Moore) with a Hollywood pedigree, a teenage box-office juggernaut (Evan Bird), or a limo driver with dreams (Robert Pattinson) — is an insider in some way. Even the mysterious girl Agatha with the leather gloves and burn marks on her face fresh off the bus (Mia Wasikowska) quickly snags a job as a personal assistant to Moore's Havana Segrand. Her Twitter friend, Carrie Fisher (as herself), gets her the gig. "Maps to the Stars" is a strange and intoxicating mix of satire, ghost story and family melodrama, with a plot and ultimate point that remains hazy throughout despite an ardently linear structure. At the start, Cronenberg flits from character to character as viewers try to glean how they all fit together. The striving Weiss family is ultimately the nucleus of the film. The father, Stafford (John Cusack), is a TV famous self-help therapist to the stars, including Havana, while the mother Christina (Olivia Williams) manages their superstar offspring Benji (Evan Bird), fresh out of rehab at only 13. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong disturbing violence and sexual content, graphic nudity, language and some drug material." RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"'71"
The grimly gripping thriller "'71" plunges a young, inexperienced British soldier into the mayhem of 1970s Belfast. Private Gary Hook (the up-and-coming "Unbroken" star Jack O'Connell) and his fellow fresh soldiers have little sense of The Troubles, as the North Ireland conflict was called. Given their orders to ship out from England shortly after basic training, they're assured they're not leaving the country. But it's more like another world. Promptly sent onto the burning streets of Belfast in berets, not riot gear, they find themselves tossed into an urban war zone ready to boil. At first the resistance is almost charming: Boys toss bags of urine at them. A clamor grows as women clang trash can lids on the row-house sidewalk. Soon, they're surrounded by a screaming mob: old and young, men and women. As their ranks splinter, a soldier beside Hook is shot pointblank in the head by an IRA youngster. In the melee, Hook is left behind to survive a night on his own in a city divided between Catholics and Protestants but where battle lines are invisible to an outsider. "'71," directed by the French-born British filmmaker Yann Demange, is a tightly controlled cannon-ball dive into a violent history. Taking place over one night in which a disoriented Hook tries to survive an unfamiliar city and an unfamiliar conflict, "'71" is plotted like an action film but made with the moodiness of the art house.O'Connell's Hook doesn't do much talking. RATED: R for "strong violence, disturbing images, and

"Focus"
If the mark of a good con artist is that he or she makes you think you know exactly what's going on — when of course you haven't a clue — that's also the mark of a good con-artist movie, isn't it? To make you feel like you totally get what's about to happen — "Oh yeah, I've seen this in tons of movies," you think — and then, boom. That's not what happens at all. See, you lost your focus for a second. "It's about distraction," explains Nicky, the con artist played by Will Smith in "Focus," the consistently entertaining new film by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa ("Crazy, Stupid, Love."). And that's what the filmmakers do to us, too — they distract us more than once by making us think we're watching a predictable, even silly story. We're lured into feeling smarter than the movie — until we're not. Damn! How did we miss that? Of course, deft plot twists aren't enough. A con-artist movie has to make you find something sympathetic in the artist. And here, the film centers on a romance, so we need to be able to invest in that as well. Luckily, Smith and relative newcomer Margot Robbie ("The Wolf of Wall Street") generate believable heat together while also appealing to us individually, and so we care what happens to them — even as we keep changing our minds as to which one we should care about most. Smith's Nicky and Robbie's Jess meet cute in New York, where the gorgeous Jess is trying to escape from a creepy guy at the bar. They end up in Jess' hotel room, where suddenly they're caught in the act by Jess' jealous, gun-toting "husband." Only, Nicky figures out right away it's a scam ("You should have waited until my pants were off," he admonishes the amateur pair). Jess realizes she's met a real pro. "Tutor me," she pleads. We next find the two at a football championship in New Orleans, where Nicky and his crew are planning to scam as many fans as possible. Jess shows up, and wants in. In an extended street pickpocketing sequence, she shows herself to have not just ambition and gumption, but also real talent. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language, some sexual content and brief violence." RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Cinderella"
In this age of revisionist, modernized Disney fairytales, where we've learned that some of our favorite characters really aren't what they seemed, the striking thing about the studio's sumptuous new live-action "Cinderella" may not be what it is, but what it isn't. It isn't revisionist. It isn't modernized. The good guys are still good, the bad still bad. Prince Charming? Still VERY charming, not a "Frozen"-style cad. And the evil stepmother? She's not, like Angelina Jolie's Maleficent, merely misunderstood; As embodied by Cate Blanchett, she remains evil to the core. (Though it must be said: Evil has never looked quite so fabulous.) What "Cinderella" IS, though, is touching, visually stunning, and very satisfying. Director Kenneth Branagh, working with a high-wattage cast led by the winsome and genuine Lily James, sticks to tried-and-true narrative formula, and infuses it with wit and style. If the glass slipper ain't broke, he seems to be saying, why fix it? A prologue shows us Cinderella's childhood, as a little girl named Ella — a lovely thing who's kind to all, and has a way

of communing with animals. She lives in a rambling country home with her loving parents (Hayley Atwell, Ben Chaplin), and all is perfect until, of course, Cinderella's mother takes ill and dies. It won't be long before Dad, so sweet but so inexplicably clueless, will take up with the widowed Lady Tremaine, who arrives with her two dim-witted daughters and starts rearranging things. We all know how bad things will get, but when Blanchett shows up with her raven hair, her chic '40s-style glamour and the first of many jaw-dropping dresses (via masterful costume designer Sandy Powell), well, it's hard not to secretly root for a villain with such stunning fashion sense. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "mild thematic elements." RUNNING TIME: 112 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Chappie"
It's set in a near-future Johannesburg policed by robots, but it's not about law enforcement or social order. It focuses on the first creation of a sentient artificial intelligence, yet it's not about the consequences of this radical invention or the nature of consciousness. Instead, though "Chappie" bears all the hallmarks of a "RoboCop" retread or a grungier "A.I." (or heaven help us, "Transcendence"), it's actually more like a warped, sci-fi version of "The Jungle Book" in which a child robot must survive the urban wilds of a gang-ridden Johannesburg. If it sounds like "Chappie" has some peculiar, crisscrossed circuitry, it most certainly does. The movie's mismatched parts — which includes possibly the most unlikely co-starring combo of all time: the South African rap duo Die Antwoord and Hugh Jackman — fit together about as well as Johnnie Five, the "Short Circuit" bot, and a blender. "Chappie" is the third feature from Blomkamp, who broke through with the alien refugee thriller "District 9" and followed that up with "Elysium," a big-budget allegory in which the 1 percent live on an orbiting space station. His dystopias aren't so unfamiliar. They marry great technological evolution with stunted social progress, organically placing sci-fi elements amid recognizable bureaucracies and urban decay. Blomkamp likes to invert tropes. Aliens come not to invade but as desperate immigrants. Robots evolve not to annihilate but to love. Both need our help. In short, Blomkamp makes action-heavy sci-fi that's animated by political ideas and frustrated urgency more than most Hollywood science fiction combined. It's deservedly won him a following, as well as the helm to the next "Alien" film. "Chappie," too, is more spirited, more bizarrely composed than most, but its oddly jumbled machinery never clicks. The logic of "Chappie" gradually disintegrates, becoming increasingly farcical. Eventually, characters are speaking lines as finely scripted as: "I have authorized the launch of the Moose." Dev Patel ("Slumdog Millionaire") plays a wide-eyed, ambitious engineer named Deon whose droids have already become the front lines of Johannesburg's police force. But he dreams of making a fully human robot, even though his boss, the CEO of a weapons company (Sigourney Weaver) shrugs that there's no money in it. A few cubicles down from him sits a rival engineer (Jackman), whose gargantuan, heavy artillery "Moose" machine has been outshined by Deon's more nimble, human-like "Scouts." RATED: R for "violence, language and brief nudity." RUNNING TIME: 112 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

Everything goes swimmingly for the two — and they're falling for each other, besides. But romance is a tricky thing when you're a lifelong trickster. That becomes clear when, in one of the film's most entertaining scenes, Nicky has to keep Jess in the dark as it appears that he's totally self-destructing. You can't show all your cards, even to the person you love. The person you MAYBE love, and who MAYBE loves you. Unless you're playing them, or they're playing you.
"Unfinished Business" will fade from memory By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge When a movie bombs at the box office, that's usually the highest level of notoriety that it achieves. In most cases, they're terrible movies that don't have much good going for them in the first place. Some are great and earn their bona fides later in the Land of DVD, that ether that lies beyond the edge of The Great Silver Screen, in a realm that I only visit via safe passport with Netflix and, when free, Redbox. That said, most fall somewhere in between. They aren't good, they aren't bad, they simply exist. Such is the case with this week's release of "Unfinished Business," a Vince Vaughn vehicle that is his fifth dud
in a row. To prove a point I will soon make, ask yourself right now if you can even remember the plot of Vaughn's 2011 film The Dilemma. Don't get me wrong, the first half of Unfinished Business is so bleakly unfunny that I wanted to hate myself for even being tricked into seeing it by the siren song lure of my great love, going to the movies. For about an hour, every joke in this movie is either mean-spirited, pathetic, or falls flat. The Jerry Maguire-style plot is thin and immaterial. Put upon traveling salesman Dan Trunkman (Vaughn) finally gets fed up enough with being his boss's ("American Sniper's" Sienna Miller) undercompensated stooge that he quits and hangs his own shingle with a pair of other losers that
happen to follow him out after his stand-and-deliver moment. That he sells the shavings from industrial grade steel manufacturing, named nonsensically something like 'snarf', is a great example of the bowels of humor this movie attempts to mine. The others are Dan's team - the sexagenarian Timothy McWinters (Tom Wilkinson), who was aged out of the last job, and Mike Pancake (Dave Franco), a slow intern who work harder than any other human being ever just to do an adequate job. Together, these three musketeers survive a brutal first year when the main action of this story begins. In order to close the first big deal of their start-up, one that will secure for them future opportunity, Dan flies the boys to Portland from
St. Louis (we get named drop many times) to do the big handshake despite the suffering going on with his stressed out home life between wife (June Diane Raphael) and bullied kids (Britton Sear, Ella Anderson). Learning that they're not the frontrunner after all, Dan's company decides that in order to face down the taunting middle manager (James Marsden) of their target by instead fly straight to Berlin to pitch his plan to the owner of the whole company. It's a ballsy move that changes the tone of the film from monotonously unfunny to remarkable graphic. Dan's business trip finds the team mixed up in Germany during the same time as Oktoberfest, the Berlin Marathon, and the

gathering of what is billed as Europe's largest gay pride festival. Hotel conflicts, sexual tomfoolery, club drug culture, and the role of an unforgettable Nick Frost earn the film it's R-rating, but yield to real laughs that don't mourn Tim's age, Mike's dimwittedness, or Dan's complacency. They just come a little too late to save what really is a milquetoast movie that will soon fade from memory and be lost to time. Rest well, "Unfinished Business." Your work is done. "Unfinished Business" runs 91 minutes and is rated R for some strong risqué sexual content/graphic nudity, and for language and drug use. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Hefta says the missionaries surrendered so no one would get hurt. After they were deported to Aruba, Hefta said they learned that Venezuela's president had denounced them as spies, an accusation they found laughable. He says it was a "harrowing" experience, but the missionaries weren't physically harmed and were treated "somewhat adequately."

Jewish people's deliverance from a Persian leader's genocidal plot 2,500 years ago. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Jews will read the biblical account of Queen Esther's exposure of the plot, which enabled the Jewish people to defend themselves. Netanyahu told Congress that Israel faces a similar threat from Persians seeking to develop an Iranian nuclear weapon, and he vowed that Jews will protect themselves once again, even if they have to do so alone. He said the U.S. appears to be negotiating "a very bad deal" with Iran. Addressing a packed chamber that included Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel (EL'-ee veeZEHL'), Netanyahu declared, "The days when the Jewish people remain passive in the face of genocidal enemies, those days are over!" The lawmakers responded with a standing ovation.

Suspect declared "Heil Hitler!" after Jewish site shootings
OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A police officer has testified at a preliminary hearing that a white supremacist suspected of killing three people at two Jewish sites in Kansas declared "Heil Hitler!" after the shootings. Overland Park police Sgt. Marty Ingram testified Monday that Frazier Glenn Miller also asked how many Jews he had killed after the shootings on April 13, 2014. The hearing will determine whether there is enough evidence to put Miller on trial. The 74-year-old Miller is charged with capital murder in the shootings at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City in Overland Park, Kansas, and at a nearby Jewish retirement home.

Music
For The Edge The ziggurat drum. The nail violin. The gong array with artillery shells. The chariot of choir. If Mad Max and Dr. Seuss started a band, it might look something like Scrap Arts Music. The Vancouver-based percussion ensemble is internationally known for building wild, kinetic, one-of-akind instruments from recycled and salvaged industrial materials. At 8 p.m. Friday, March 20, Scrap Arts Music will return to Washington University in St. Louis as part of the Edison Ovations Series. In addition, at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, the troupe will perform a special all-ages matinee as part of Edison’s ovations for young people series. Scrap Arts Music is the brainchild of Gregory Kozak, a composer and avant-garde jazz musician who learned the art of welding in order to build the group’s strangely lifelike instruments — or “creatures,” as he calls them. Hunting through junkyards, shipyards and demolition sites near his home in British Columbia, Kozak spends hours searching for scrap metal and other industrial cast-offs. To date, he has fabricated more than 145 instruments, ranging from the spinning Ziggurat Drum to the Junk-on-a-Stick cymbal tree to the 13-string Mojo, which incorporates a sailboard mast, steel bowls, balloons, wood and aluminum scraps. Other examples include the Chime Array, made from artillery shells and stainless steel scrap; the Gong Array, made from boat railings and monkey bar “seconds”; and the Plankophone, a kind of m arimba ma d e f ro m w o o d e n railings pulled out of a condemned building. Meanwhile, the group’s music fuses world and pop sensibilities, reflecting Kozak’s training with master musicians such as Pandit Pran Nath, Abraham Adzenyah and Steve Berrios. Each composition is tailored to the unique properties of the instruments on which it is
performed, and to the innovative sticking techniques developed by Kozak and his fellow performers. The resulting show is at once improvisational and highly choreographed — equal parts drumming, theater and dance. Tickets and sponsors The Edison Ovations performance begins at 8 p.m. Friday, March 20. Tickets are $36, or $32 seniors, $28 for Washington University faculty and staff and $20 for students and children. The ovations for young people performance begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21. Tickets are $12. In addition, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., Edison will host a free workshop in which children attending the matinee can use found and recycled materials to craft small handmade instruments. The event is sponsored by Perennial, a St. Louis nonprofit specializing in creative, eco-friendly reuse. Tickets are available at the Edison Box Office. Edison Theatre is located in the Mallinckrodt Center, 6465 Forsyth Blvd. For more information, call (314) 935-6543, e-mail edison@ wustl.edu or visit edison.wustl.edu. E d i s o n p ro g r a m s a re m a d e possible with support from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency; the Regional Arts Commission, St. Louis; and private contributors.

Presley's Country Jubilee opens 49th season For The Edge Branson’s First Family of Entertainment, the Presleys kicked off their 49th live show season at 8p.m., Friday, March 6, 2015 in their original theater built in 1967 on Branson’s famous Highway 76 Strip. Three generations of Presley family members, plus a cast of multitalented entertainers, can be seen nightly in their all new 2015 show featuring country hits, Southern gospel and hilarious comedy. Visit www.presleys.com or call 800-335-4874 for tickets. “This year ’s show is going to be more entertaining than ever,” according to co-producer, Gary Presley, also known as the lovable hillbilly character, Herkimer. “It’s going to be a fast-paced show with something for people of all ages to love.” Gary and his brother, Steve Presley, the show’s other co-producer and drummer, are the only two original entertainers from Branson’s first two live music shows who still perform nightly. Presleys’ Country Jubilee promises to treat audiences to a show packed full of brand-new music and comedy, new lighting effects and much more in 2015. Gary and his son, Eric Presley, also known as the slap-stick character Cecil, have lots of rip-roaring comedy antics and downhome family fun in store for guests. Fourth generation performer, Ben Presley, joins his dad Cecil on stage providing even more laughs. The tradition continues as third generation family members, Scott, Greg and John Presley, who are some of Branson’s best entertainers, wow audiences every night with their musical talents. This year, musician Dean Holman will be joining the show playing banjo, steel guitar and dobro. Holman has toured with many great country acts such as Ricky Skaggs. Before the main show, fans can sing along to their favorite old time songs in the pre-show that starts in the Presleys’ lobby at 7:15p.m. Guests will also want to check out the gift
shop for Presleys’ souvenirs and a sampling of merchandise from the famous Dick’s OldTime 5 & 10 Store, a landmark in downtown Branson. Also in 2015, the Presleys are kicking off the 6th season of their hit music and comedy TV Show, on RFD-TV. Presleys’ TV Show is
seen across the nation by over one million viewers each month. KPNT 105.7 The Point Welcomes & The Pageant & Steve L i t m a n P re s e n t i s e x c i t e d t o announce Alabama Shakes with special guest Father John Misty live at the Fabulous Fox Theatre Thursday, May 28 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $75, $45, $35, $30 and $25 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 3145 3 4 - 1111 , o r i n p e r s o n a t t h e Fabulous Fox Box Office. Sound & Color is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the Shakes’ 2012 debut Boys & Girls, which earned the group three Grammy nominations, including a nod for Best New Artist. The gold-certified album’s breakthrough paved the way for the Shakes—Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, d ru m m e r S t e v e J o h n s o n , a n d touring keyboard players Ben Ta n n e r a n d P a u l H o r t o n — to become one of the most celebrated live acts in the world, as they delivered unforgettable performances everywhere from Saturday Night Live to the main stages of such festivals as Bonnaroo and Glastonbury. The album’s twelve songs reveal a band honed by years on the road, and drawing from a wide range of influences. The b l u e s y g ro o v e o f “ S h o e g a z e ” or the garage-rock freak-out on “The Greatest” give way to the psychedelic space jam “Gemini.” The gently swaying, chiming title song opens the album with what Howard calls “more of a visual thing, I think of this whole scene going on,” then explodes into the urgent, tightly-coiled funk of “Don’t Wanna Fight.” Long instrumental intros and passages c re a t e h a z y a t m o s p h e re , a n d then the intensity of Howard’s vocals snaps everything back into riveting focus. The songs were written during breaks in the grueling touring schedule of a young band, sometimes by the members together and sometimes by Howard working alone at her home studio. She notes that there were several dedicated writing periods during the past year, but that “sometimes I wasn’t dedicating enough time, so I’d binge-write, sit in the basement and work for 18 hours for five days straight.” When the Shakes began recording at Nashville’s Sound Emporium studio, Blake Mills—a young guitar wizard who has previously helmed sessions by Sara Watkins and Sky Ferriera, and played alongside everyone from Norah Jones and the Dixie Chicks to Lana Del Ray and Kid Rock—came on board as a co-producer to help harness all of the different ideas. Wi t h S o u n d & C o l o r, Alabama Shakes prove that the response to Boys & Girls was no fluke. Expanding on the soulful blues-rock base that made their name, they defy p re d i c t a b l e e x p e c t a t i o n s a n d map an exciting, surprising, and innovative new direction. As they prepare to return to the road, what shines through is a sense of pride and self-assuredness— feelings not often associated with t h e a l w a y s - t r i c k y s o p h o m o re album. The show is presented by The Pageant & Steve Litman Presents.
The Sheldon to host Los Folkloristas
The Sheldon and the Hispanic Arts Council of St. Louis present Los Folkloristas, Friday, March 27 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. For over 45 years, Los Folkloristas have pioneered the preservation of folk music in their native Mexico and Latin America. The legendary group is devoted to the investigation of cultural expressions and the celebration of their folkloric roots, incorporating this knowledge into their repertoire. Having celebrated their 45th anniversary season in 2011, Los Folkloristas continue their mission to preserve and record the traditional music of their culture. Carrying more than 100 instruments in their collection, and performing music from up to 15 different countries and pre-Columbian Mexico, the seven-member ensemble takes the audience on a musical journey through Latin America. Los Folkloristas was founded in 1966. They were honored in 1996 at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico with a special concert given in honor of their 30th anniversary and again on their 35th anniversary in 2001. They have recorded more than 30 albums worldwide and contributed to the soundtrack for the award-winning films “El Norte” and “Mi Família.” Over the decades, 48 different musicians have been a part of the group. Concert attendees are encouraged to visit the Sheldon Art Galleries before the concert and during intermission to view the exhibition, “A World of Music: Africa, Asia and Latin America - Instruments from the Hartenberger World Music Collection.”

Lecrae to appear at The Fox
Tw o t i m e G r a m m y a w a rd winning artist Lecrae will be bringing his national Anomaly Tour to the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Thursday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m. Special guests Andy Mineo and DJ Promote are also scheduled to perform. Lecrae made history as the first hip-hop artist to win a Grammy award in the Best Gospel Album category for his sixth studio album Gravity, which sold 70,490 units in its first week – making it #1 Rap Album, #1 Independent Album, #3 on the Billboard 200. His first mixtape, Church Clothes, went double platinum, garnering over 500,000 downloads and debuting #10 on iTunes as an EP. With several notable media appearances, chart-topping albums, along with a critically acclaimed mixtape and 2 Grammy awards to his credit, Lecrae has found himself on a narrow road of rappers who speak of monogamy, contentment, and faith while remaining true to his background and his worldview. Lecrae will be joined on the tour
by Carlos Trevino, aka DJ Promote, and fellow rapper Andy Mineo. DJ Promote, best known for his high energy mixing skill and charismatic stage presence, brings over fifteen years of turntable experience to the show. Andy Mineo is a born communicator whether he is on stage bringing an audience to its feet with his riveting performance or off stage fielding interview questions with a potent combination of intellect and wit. He uses hip hop music as his instrument for reaching the masses since and has made a name for himself with such projects as Sin is Wack Vol. 1.

The Arts
CAM to present Occupational Therapy For The Edge The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) presents a new group exhibition, Occupational Therapy, on view May 1 through August 16, 2015. Encompassing a wide range of media—including painting, drawing, sculpture, p h o t o g r a p h y, i n s t a l l a t i o n , performance, and video—from the 1960s to the present, Occupational Therapy expresses and addresses a variety of psychological conditions, both real and imagined, made manifest by artistic practice. The exhibition features artwork by nineteen renowned artists: John Baldessari, Martin Brief, Tammy Rae Carland, Rochelle Feinstein, Christian Jankowski, Martin Kippenberger, Yayoi Kusama, Maria Lassnig, Lee Lozano, Bruce N aum a n , C a rl P op e , Wi l l i a m P o w h i d a , P e d ro R e y e s , B u z z Spector, Deb Sokolow, Frances Stark, William Wegman, and Andrew Norman Wilson and Nick Bastis. Where does inspiration come from? How do artists cope with pervasive skepticism and doubt? Can one acknowledge and celebrate artistic forebears while also finding one’s own voice? In our mediasaturated climate, where artists find themselves subject to both increased visibility and constant scrutiny, some of the most incisive and poignant answers to these questions are often found in works of art themselves. Sincere, cynical, and humorous in equal measure, the works on view engage the complexities and challenges of being an artist. Featured artists inhabit a variety of roles, from therapist, director, and narrator to patient, actor, and subject. Debunking the notion of the artist as enlightened genius, the exhibition aims to humanize the creative process. Several artists, including Lee Lozano, Deb Sokolow, and Frances Stark, assume a diaristic tone, employing text in the form of manifestos, doodles, and journals to

give voice to urities and frustrations. They question art’s perceived ability to affect change. Some, like Pedro Reyes, also propose new paradigms for transformation. Other artists—Martin Brief, Rochelle Feinstein, Martin Kippenberger, and William Powhida—address what they consider to be the art world’s insincerity, preoccupation with celebrity, and obsession with the market. While many works function diagnostically by indexing the various issues artists face, others—by Christian Jankowski and William Wegman, for example— offer tongue-in- cheek prescriptions for staving off conditions such as anxiety or artist’s block. Whether

aspiring to wellness or imparting words of wisdom, the artists in Occupational Therapy crystallize art therapy’s directive to sublimate one’s afflictions through the act of making art. Occupational Therapy is organized for the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis by Kelly Shindler, Associate Curator. This exhibition is generously supported by David Zwirner Gallery, New York; the Goethe Institut, Chicago; On Stellar Rays, New York; and Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco. Special thanks to Sonnabend Gallery, New York, and Tyler Fine Arts, St. Louis.

Dining Delights
Bill Roseberry/The Edge
A create-your-own sandwich from Fat Sandwich Company in Champaign. Below, the storefront of Fat Sandwich Company on John Street in Champaign.
Champaign's Fat Sandwich Company By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge I'm getting full just thinking about writing this review. On a recent trip to Champaign I visited a unique and extraordinarily glutenous restaurant — Fat Sandwich Company. You definitely won't find Fat Sandwich Company on any diet plans and it certainly won't be doctor recommended or approved. Health is the furthest thing from your mind when you enter this fatfriendly sandwich shop. There are two certainties when you visit Fat Sandwich Company, your sandwich will have French fries on it and it will have the prefix fat listed before its name. For example, some of the names of the sandwiches from Fat Sandwich Company include: the Fat MILF, the Fat F, the Fat Lush, the Fat Sanchez, the Fat WalkOfShame, the Fat Motherclucker and the mother of all fat sandwiches, the Big Fat Ugly. It's the type of establishment where you may feel like taking a shower after your dining experience. Located at 502 East John Street in Champaign, Fat Sandwich Company's creativity is off the charts. They basically have no limit to what they will put on a sandwich. The Fat MILF for example (This is a family publication so I can't explain what a MILF is; watch the movie "American Pie.") includes cheesesteak, chicken fingers mozzarella sticks, bacon, mayo and ketchup on an eight-inch amoroso roll. The Big Fat Ugly is the star of the Fat Sandwich Company with a whopping 20 different ingredients on it. You won't even need dinner after reading this, you will already be full. Here we go, it has: two rolls
24
with four cheeseburgers, double cheesesteak, chicken cheesesteak, gyro meat, grilled chicken, bacon, sausage, mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers, chicken nuggets, mac 'n cheese bites, fried mushrooms, jalapeno poppers, pizza bites, onion rings, hash browns, mini corn dogs, American cheese, mayo, ketchup poppers and ketchup. Don't forget there are also fries on top of this sandwich. Unbelievable. Surprisingly on my visit there were no female patrons. It was mainly filled with college dudes, still the owners of high metabolisms and iron guts. Imagine Bluto from
On the Edge of the Weekend
Animal House, or Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds, I'm imagining those are the common visitors. Fat Sandwich Company likes to establish itself near college campuses. Its first location was in Norman, Okla., near the campus of the University of Oklahoma in 2007, but has since closed. In 2008, the Champaign franchise opened to serve the University of Illinois student body and seems to be going strong. There are also locations in Chicago. Of course Fat Sandwich Company intrigued me, so I comprised my own glutinous creation and gave it
March 19, 2015
the self-proclaimed moniker of the Fat Food Critic. My monstrosity included an eight- in ch amoroso roll f illed with: bacon (of course), chicken fingers, mac 'n cheese bites, pizza bites, mini corn dogs, provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese, cheese whiz and hot sauce. I topped it off by upgrading from regular f r i e s t o w a ff l e f r i e s , a m o re distinguished member of the fry family. I asked the guy at the counter to go ahead and call an ambulance to pick me up, but he assured I would be fine. Surprisingly, I finished it off without any problem.
Ta s t e - w i s e I w o u l d a l m o s t describe it as confusing. Imagine tasting chicken in one bite, pizza the next, then bacon and then corn dogs. Eventually it seemed like my palate began to shut down. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, it was just too much. Now in defense, I went around 5 p.m. and had no alcohol in my system. I'm just spit balling here, but like a Jack in the Box taco, I'm guessing it tastes better with alcohol. Hence why Fat Sandwich Company is open until 3 a.m. seven days a week. It doesn't open until noon everyday, so it understands its clientele. The only thing I may recommend as an addition is a dessert menu that includes Lipator, or liposuctions, or possibly an angioplasty. And if the ridiculous sandwiches a re n ' t e n o u g h , F a t S a n d w i c h Company also includes donut selections where you can get a bacon cheeseburger on a glazed donut bun, or a fried chicken patty with American cheese served on a glazed donut bun. There are different cheesesteaks available, too, and a breakfast menu tagged the hangover helper. All breakfast rolls start on an eightinch roll with three eggs and hash browns. Check Fat Sandwich Company out at www.fatsandwichcompany. com to peruse the whole menu. I will say one thing, it was fairly cheap. I got out of there for under $15 and believe me, I wasn't hungry. I would probably brave Fat Sandwich Company again sometime and try a roll off of the menu, but it won't be for awhile. I don't think I could handle it on a regular basis, but I'm pretty sure at 3 a.m. it's a place you gotta eat.
