Local woman teaches more than yoga

S

tacey Stuffelbeam found a way to connect two of her passions: yoga and charitable donations. An instructor for almost a decade, Stacey teaches yoga in the Edwardsville area and also has a bachelor’s degree in biology, medical science and completed her master’s studies in mass communication.

Early in her career, Stacey worked at the Beverly Farm Developmental Training Center in Godfrey. She eventually began working for the Community Riding Program at the Equestrian Center on the main campus of Beverly Farm, located on Humbert Road in Godfrey.

The Developmental Training Center is often the starting point where individuals establish the prerequisites needed before advancing to other programs. Many of the Beverly Farm residents enjoy the fulfillment that comes with a job.

Residents may choose light assembly work, ceramics, food service or janitorial. Cooking classes teach basic food preparation, sanitation

and safety — great for residents who are able to prepare some of their own meals. All vocational programs are fully supervised by qualified staff.

The Equestrian Center provides Therapeutic Horsemanship for Beverly Farm residents as well as the community and offers riding programs and public lessons for anyone five years of age and older.

Riders participate in lessons to increase their riding skills and improve their general knowledge of horses. The program instructs riders in horsemanship, saddling, unsaddling and general horse care.

Boarding, riding, birthday parties and educational field trips at the Equestrian Center are also available to the public.

“Answering phones at D.T. may not have been the most glamorous job,” said Stacey. “But it was a very meaningful job because I could see how much I was helping people who were, in turn, helping some wonderful people. At the Equestrian Center I recruited volunteers and kept participants informed about what was happening with the Community Riding Program.”

“I think yoga should be accessible to everyone,” said Stacey. “The expense of the donation class won’t prohibit anyone from coming.

Instead of getting paid or charging my students for the class, I select a local charity, such as Beverly Farm, and encourage students to donate as much or as little as they can.”

Because of her work experience at Beverly Farm, she holds a special place in her heart for it and each year, she and her husband give a small donation. But she was looking to do more. And it worked.

“My Good Karma Yoga class raised more money for Beverly Farm than any other charity we’ve ever had,” said Stacey. “The best part is that now a whole new group of people

know about Beverly Farm and all the wonderful things that happen there so, hopefully, they will continue to support the residents and employees at Beverly Farm.”

Stacey’s ambitious fundraising style proves that raising money for a great cause is possible and not always challenging.

“People are very generous,” said Stacey. “I already had a group of caring students who like to help others whenever they can so really all I had to do was ask. A simple fundraiser, like teaching a yoga class for donations, is easier for me to do than just asking someone to support a great cause.”

People People planner Quad Cities to host Titanic exhibit On April 15, 1912, Titanic, the world’s largest ship, sank in the Atlantic after colliding with an iceberg claiming more than 1,500 lives and subsequently altering the world’s confidence in modern technology. Nearly 99 years later, the Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre in Davenport, Iowa, will pay tribute to the tragedy which continues to resonate through Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, where more than 125 legendary artifacts conserved from the Ship’s debris field are showcased offering visitors a poignant look at this iconic Ship and its passengers.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, on display March 13-June 26, 2011, has been designed with a focus on the legendary Titanic’s compelling human stories as best told through authentic artifacts and extensive room re-creations. Perfume from a maker who was traveling to New York to sell his samples, china etched with the logo of the elite White Star Line, even pieces of the Ship itself -- these and many other authentic objects offer haunting, emotional connections to lives abruptly ended or forever altered.

“We are honored to be able to bring this acclaimed world-class Exhibition to the Quad Cities community,” said Kim Findlay, president and CEO of the Putnam Museum and IMAX Theatre. “It is truly an iconic piece of history, and to have Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Putnam Museum on its 99th anniversary is a privilege.”

Exhibit visitors are quickly drawn back in time to 1912 upon entrance, as each receives a replica boarding pass of an actual passenger aboard Titanic. They then begin their chronological journey through the life of Titanic, moving through the Ship’s construction, to life on board, to the ill-fated sinking and amazing artifact rescue efforts. They will marvel at the re-created cabins, and press their palms against an iceberg while learning of countless stories of heroism and humanity. In the “Memorial Gallery” guests will take their boarding pass to the memorial wall and discover whether their passenger and traveling companions survived or perished.

Over the past 15 years, more than 20 million people have seen this powerful 6,000-square foot exhibition in major museums worldwide - from Chicago to Los Angeles and Paris to London. RMS Titanic, Inc. is the only company permitted by law to recover objects from the wreck of Titanic. The Company was granted Salvor-in-Possession rights to the wreck site of Titanic by a United States federal court in 1994 and has conducted seven research and recovery expeditions to the Titanic rescuing more than 5,500 artifacts.

As depicted in the 1997 Academy Award-winning movie “Titanic,” more than 1,500 passengers and crew members perished during the ship’s maiden voyage, just four days after it launched. The ship sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912, less than three hours after colliding with an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

Only about 700 people survived. The Titanic had just 20 lifeboats — and most of them left the sinking ship with far fewer passengers than their capacity would have allowed.

When the Titanic sank, it was not seen again for more than 70 years, until oceanographers Robert Ballard and Jean Louis Michel discovered the shipwreck site in a joint U.S./ French expedition Sept. 1, 1985.

Along with the exhibit, the Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre will bring back the movie, “Ghosts of the Abyss,” a documentary that takes viewers under the sea to witness the wreckage recovery project.

Bull riders returning to St. Louis The Professional Bull Riders’ elite Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) returns to Scottrade Center for the St. Louis Invitational Feb. 25-27, 2011.

FOTAD plans annual trivia night The 11th Annual Friends of Theater and Dance (FOTAD) Trivia Night is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the James F. Metcalf Theater on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. A minisilent auction also will be available.

FOTAD is a support organization for the SIUE Department of Theater and Dance. The doors will open at 6 p.m., with the game scheduled to begin promptly at 7. Proceeds from the event benefit FOTAD’s student merit award fund for qualified SIUE students majoring in theater and dance at the University.

Science Center names interim CEO The Saint Louis Science Center announced today that Philip Needleman, Ph.D., will serve as its interim President and Chief Executive Officer, effective January 20, 2011. Needleman will lead the museum during the search for the permanent replacement for Doug King, who left the museum on December 31, 2010, to become the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

Needleman has been serving as Interim President of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center since October 2009 while the Center conducted a national search for a new President. The Plant Science Center recently announced its new President,

James Carrington, Ph.D., and he will officially start on May 1, 2011. An orderly transfer of responsibilities is underway with Needleman progressively decreasing his efforts. During the spring, he will divide his activities between both science institutions.

Needleman is familiar with the Saint Louis Science Center, having served on its Board of Commissioners since 2005 and on its Board of Trustees from 1991 to 1998 and 2002 to 2004.

People People planner Alton ready for eagle watchers It’s time to hop in the car and follow Mother Nature’s Highway to Alton this winter for an eagle watching adventure.

Every January, experts anticipate nearly 1,000 American Bald Eagles will m i g r a t e t o t h e re g i o n , m a n y reclaiming their winter nests along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway from Alton to Grafton and Pere Marquette State Park. With the help of the Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau’s 2011 Eagle Watcher ’s Guide, visitors can plan their own eagle watching adventure and take part in numerous eagle watching events and tours happening throughout the region. New this year, the recently opened Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower will offer visitors new eagle viewing opportunities.

Eagle watching has been an attraction for the last decade all around Alton, and every year new attractions and events enrich the experience for visitors wishing to catch a glimpse of these magnificent birds.

In May 2010, the new Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower opened in Hartford, Il., offering panoramic views of the confluence of the Missouri & Mississippi rivers from platforms at 50, 100 and 150 feet.

Music Tuning in RME plans Senior Music Series The River Music Experience (RME) is excited to announce its brand new Senior Music Series. The series will feature a variety of musical talent that will include jazz, big bands, and even a Senior Citizen prom.

Concerts will run from 5:00 p.m.

- 6:30 p.m. and will be held on the second floor of the RME. Admission to each show is $7 for non-members, $5 for RME members and for groups of ten or more.

From big band jazz to 50’s rock, the new series will be a fantastic addition to the diverse musical opportunities provided by RME. “The Senior Concert Series at RME is an wonderful new addition to our programming, and compliments our mission to serve as a music center for the entire community,” said Ellis Kell, Director of Programming & Community Outreach.

Menzel to perform with SLSO The St. Louis Symphony has just added a Live at Powell Hall concert to its 2010-11 season. Tony Award winner and popular cast member of the hit television show “Glee,” Idina Menzel, will perform for one afternoon only with the St. Louis Symphony on Sunday, January 23 at 3:00 p.m.

The Broadway powerhouse, who received a Tony Award for her role as “Elphaba” in the international blockbuster Wicked, will perform a diverse concert of classical, pop, and musical theater favorites, including hits from Wicked and Rent and her Glee appearances.

“On the Move” Eisenhower Dance Ensemble returns to Arts & Issues stage

he SIUE Arts & Issues season continues into the new year at 7:30 p.m. in the Katherine Dunham Hall Theater on Jan. 29 when the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble takes the stage with “On the Move.”

No stranger to the Arts & Issues stage, EDE returns to SIUE celebrating its 20th anniversary and presenting an array of fresh new dances. Audience members will experience the best of contemporary dance including “Dances from the Heart of Rock ‘n Roll,” an homage to the ‘60s and ‘70s era of folk and rock music. A special dance performance will also incorporate several local high school dance students.

EDE Artistic Director Laurie Eisenhower founded the company in 1991 in metropolitan Detroit. Since its inception, the troupe has been dedicated to the performance of a diverse range of contemporary dance works.

“I’m very excited about this program, and I think the audience will love it,” Eisenhower said. “The music is familiar and fabulous…and the dancers look terrific in the choreography.”

Excerpts from the “Dances from the Heart of Rock ‘n Roll” were recently performed by the Company at Chicago’s Athenaeum Theatre to rave reviews. This heartfelt tribute

by Eisenhower features the music of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Bonnie Raitt, among others.

Also on the program will be various favorites from the Company’s repertory. “We are celebrating our 20th anniversary this season,” Eisenhower said. “So we have revived several works from the early years of EDE.” “Red Dress” was one of the first works choreographed by Eisenhower for the Company and it has stood the test of time. “It is a comedic duet about love, so everyone can relate to it,” Eisenhower said.

SIUE Arts & Issues Director Grant Andree praised EDE for its exciting dance interpretations but also applauded the group’s interest in education. “In addition to the Jan. 29 event, members of the Eisenhower troupe will be conducting master classes with SIUE dance students,” he said. “As an added treat, the group will choreograph a piece that will include not only SIUE dance students but also students from SIUE’s East St. Louis Performing Arts Center, the Turning Pointe Academy of Dance in Maryville and Premiere Performance Dance Studio in Edwardsville. “We love to involve the community in our performances,” Eisenhower said. “It is exciting for the young dancers to appear onstage with a professional company and it also provides a fabulous way for EDE to connect more personally with each community in which we perform.”

Dianna Andrews Gaither, owner of the Turning Pointe Academy of Dance, has four high school students that will be participating onstage with the EDE as well as her SIUE Dance Company students which she teaches at SIUE. She said that her students were “super-excited” and up for the pressure and challenge that participation in the show will bring. “They will learn the dance on Thursday and Friday after school, and they will perform it on Saturday,” Andrews Gaither said. “It is going to be a very fast process.”

But Andrews Gaither also felt that one of the reasons why the EDE was offering the experience to young pre-professional dance students was because “this is what it’s like sometimes in the real dance world.”

“They have to learn a piece and then they are expected to know it and perform it,” she said.

Over the past 20 years, EDE has achieved the distinction of being Michigan’s premiere professional

“Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea” Saint Louis Art Museum welcomes new exhibit

his spring, the Saint Louis Art Museum is bringing an amazing collection for exhibition to the museum that will transform the Main Exhibition Galleries into the watery world of the ancient Maya.

The Maya saw themselves as living in a world surrounded by the sea and permeated by other bodies of water-rivers, streams, lakes,

clouds, and rain.

This very rare, extremely fascinating collection, entitled “Fiery Pool: The Maya and The Mythic Sea,” will be divided into four sections: Water and Cosmos: Creatures of the Fiery Pool; Navigating the Cosmos and Birth to Rebirth.

“Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea” brings together over 90 works, many never before seen in the United States, to offer exciting insights into the culture of the ancient Maya. Surrounded by the sea and dependent on the lifegiving power of rain and clouds, the ancient Maya created fantastic objects imbued with the symbolic power of water. The four sections will explore the different ways Maya artists represented water, from setting religious narratives in watery domains to using shells and other exotic materials acquired through coastal trade networks.

In Water and Cosmos, visitors will learn how water served as the primary cosmological setting for

images of Maya deities and kings alike. Chahk, the Maya god of rain and storms, will be introduced.

Navigating the Cosmos explores the importance of trade to the Maya, both by its inclusion of objects with exotic origins from across the sea and depictions of how trade and religious imagery of seafaring often overlapped.

The exhibit was curated by Daniel Finamore, The Russell W. Knight Curator of Maritime Artt and History at the Peabody Essex Museum, and Stephen D. Houston, The Dupee Family Professor of Social Science and Professor of Archaeology at Brown University.

“Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea” is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Mass., and has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Because

democracy demands wisdom.

Additional support was provided by ECHO (Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations), a program of the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Innovation and Improvement.

This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

Curated in St. Louis by Matthew H. Robb, assistant curator of Ancient American and Native American art, the exhibition will be on view in the Main Exhibition Galleries, Feb. 13 to May 8, 2011.

The Arts Artistic adventures Comedy trio to visit St. Louis Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy will return to St. Louis for one show at 8 p.m.

He recently recorded his latest one hour special for Comedy Central at Just For Laughs inaugural Festival in Chicago. The special, Aged and Confused, which is available on

Larry The Cable Guy has his signature catchphrase, “Git-R-Done”, he continues to sell-out theatres and arenas throughout North America.

He recently performed in front of more than 50,000 fans while recording his next hour-long special Tailgate Party for Comedy Central last July 4 in Nebraska. In Cars 2, Larry will voice Mater in the sequel which will be released in 2011. Larry will be hosting Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy for the History Channel. The show is slated to premiere in 2011. In each episode, Larry will visit various sites across the country revealing bits of real history while immersing himself in new and different lifestyles, jobs and hobbies that celebrate the American experience.

What does 2011 have in store for you?

As I sit here at my computer contemplating what I want to share with you at the beginning of this year, I need to tell you I feel tired and depleted.

And, I feel ashamed to say that after having the joy of family for the holidays, the gift of friendship expressed through emails, phone calls and so many cards.

But, I’m tired. However, it is the kind of tired that comes from joyous family gatherings, seeing folks you don’t see each and every week, hearing from friends from all over our country and around the world. It is a kind of ‘whee…this has been a wonderful holiday season!!!

But now what? It is the beginning of a new year. It is like opening a new tablet without

Doris Gvillo one mark on any page or perhaps like taking that first step into a new snowfall that is pristine and unblemished.

W h a t w i l l this coming year h o l d ? Wi l l i t b e h e a l t h a n d good fortune or will it bring disappointment and sadness. I would say if it is an ordinary year, it would hold both good and bad, joy and sadness, and also, the unexpected.

I’m sure that you, like me, will have heard it said that being content isn’t contingent upon having everything you want or like, but rather being satisfied with everything we have.

Does that mean we don’t work

to improve our lives? I don’t believe so, but I do think it suggests that contentment doesn’t lie in the ‘things’ that we possess, but rather it is something that comes when we feel connected to God. If we were to count our blessings and feel truly thankful, would we start with counting possessions, a big screen television, a new automobile, and all the marvelous electronic devices that abound in our society? If that is what we count as the ‘important’ blessings, I believe we are missing the most important aspect of our lives.

I know most of us will remark we have worked very hard to have these blessings, but on the opposite side of the spectrum,

what are the blessings that we h a v e re c e i v e d f ro m a l o v i n g God when, if we are willing to admit it, we may not deserve and certainly couldn’t earn.

I’ve always been totally amazed when reading about Paul and his trials and many imprisonments during his ministry. Paul says, “I have learned in whatever situation I am in to be content.”

That’s a lesson I am t rying h a rd t o l e a r n . I ’ m t r y i n g t o be ‘satisfied’ because my life compared to so many in God’s world is very blessed. I feel ashamed when I complain and know that I have much more than I deserve.

The greatest gift of all is the gift of salvation and when I think of that I am humbled by a love

s o t re m e n d o u s a n d p ro b a b l y undeserved. What a God we have! What love has been given us!!!

So as we walk into the year 2011, let us walk with a feeling of expectation, joy, and most of all thankfulness.

One thing for sure…we won’t be walking alone because God will be with us if we just allow Him into our lives.

I wish all of you a most blessed and joyous year ahead. And remember, it isn’t ‘things’ we should be longing for, but rather God’s love and grace to guide us safely into whatever the future holds.

The event traditionally known as Mitzvah Day was held on a Friday across southeast Michigan, since Christmas fell this year on a Saturday, which is the Jewish Sabbath. Observant Jews don’t work from sundown each Friday until sundown Saturday.

Religion briefs N.C. Council of Churches elects gay man as president to push for liberal goals RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina Council of Churches, a social justice advocacy group that unites denominations and congregations, has elected an openly gay person as its president.

Although the election is groundbreaking in a Southern state where the religious landscape is dominated by theologically and socially conservative churches, it’s not a particular surprise, said the Rev. George Reed, executive director of the state council of churches.

“From the council of churches standpoint, the big deal was almost 20 years ago” when the body voted to include the gayfriendly MCC in its membership, Reed said.

“Little Fockers”

Meet the latest in Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller ’s comedy franchise. Grit your teeth through the fairly short though agonizing duration of its stay. Then wave goodbye in relief as its huge cast of characters departs like the annoying in-laws they are. “Meet the Parents” was a tolerable trifle and “Meet the Fockers” was a bloated bore. But this third installment is tasteless trash, filled with abysmally unfunny gags involving vomit, enemas, erectile dysfunction and the like. Director Paul Weitz delivers a string of dumb episodes as De Niro’s fatherin-law from hell again puts Stiller ’s nervous son-in-law under surveillance. The whole gang returns, including Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Owen Wilson, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner, with Jessica Alba, Laura Dern and Harvey Keitel joining the cast. Hopefully, the Fockers will call it quits after this. We don’t need these in-laws coming to visit again.

RATED: PG-13 for mature sexual humor throughout, language and some drug content.

RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes.

“True Grit”

One of the most mainstream, crowd-pleasing films Joel and Ethan Coen have ever made. It’s sort of a screwball Western, if you will, with vivid performances a n d s t r i k i n g l y v a s t , p i c t u re s q u e v i s t a s , t h e a l w a y s gorg e o u s w o r k o f t h e a l w a y s g re a t R o g e r Deakins, the Coens’ frequent cinematographer. But it’s a minor entry from the writing-directing brothers, especially when you consider the inventiveness and strength of their canon and the close aesthetic resemblance to “No Country for Old Men,” their masterpiece. While “True Grit” is entertaining, it’s also surprisingly lacking in emotional resonance, as well as the intriguing sense of ambiguity that so often permeates Coen pictures. Only toward the end does it feel like anything is at stake, but at least it’s enjoyable while you’re waiting. Hailee Steinfeld in her film debut is a revelation as Mattie Ross, the 19th-century pioneer teenager who demands vengeance for her father ’s murder. She seeks help from a man she hears has true grit: one-eyed, alcoholic U.S.

Marshal Rooster Cogburn. Jeff Bridges plays the role that earned John Wayne his only Academy Award as gruff and grizzled, a lawman who’s lived a long and well-lubricated life, but who also has attained a certain Zen-like self-possession about it. Matt Damon again proves he can do anything, joining the duo on the trail as a preening Texas Ranger.

RATED: PG-13 for some intense sequences of western violence including disturbing images.

RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes.

“Another Year”

Nothing really happens in Mike Leigh’s latest — nothing extraordinary, at least. As the title suggests, the film follows the usual comings and goings, ups and downs that transpire over four seasons among a longtime happily married couple, their family and friends. And yet everything is fully realized and superbly crafted; the sense of intimacy Leigh creates as writer and director is never broken, for better and for worse. “Another Year” feels as organic and authentic as the vegetables its lead characters, husband and wife Tom and Gerri (Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen), grow in a community garden. It reveals the players’ connections effortlessly, and with the naturalistic dialogue that is among the filmmaker’s trademarks. But it can also be unrelentingly bleak, which should come as a surprise to absolutely no one who’s a fan of Leigh’s work. Still, the character at the center of “Another Year,” Lesley Manville’s Mary, is a high-energy bundle of neediness and desire, constantly striving to connect, desperate for human contact. Manville, one of many Leigh regulars in the cast, plays her as well-intentioned but self-conscious, ingratiating but jittery, sweet but passive-aggressive and clearly so, so lonely. It’s an annoying character, but Manville is so good, she makes you feel sorry for her.

“Biutiful”

Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has always driven headlong into gritty depictions of pain and tragedy.

With hand-held camera and a brooding artist’s mandate, he revels in peering into the depths and brandishing his seriousness. Following the visceral triptychs “Amores Perros,” “21 Grams” and “Babel,” Inarritu, for the first time, tells the story linearly. He is trained on one character: Uxbal (Javier Bardem), a kind of black-market middle man in Barcelona.

He’s fatally ill, a predicament made all the more awkward because of his two young children, Ana (Hanaa Bouchaib) and Mateo (Guillermo Estrella). Their mother, Uxbal’s ex-wife (Maricel Alvarez), is manic-depressive and untrustworthy.

Much of “Biutiful” is Uxbal badly attempting to ready himself and those around him for his exit. Bardem, with a mane of hair and a heavy weariness, carries the otherwise contrived film entirely. A film about death is in itself a worthy undertaking, but Inarritu tries to juggle fatherhood, divorce, business ethics and ghosts. It’s mountains to heap on an actor, and remarkable that Bardem manages it so beautifully.

RATED: R for disturbing images, language, some sexual content, nudity and drug use.

RUNNING TIME: 148 minutes.

“Blue Valentine”

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling’s marital drama is agonizing to watch yet relentlessly compelling, even illuminating, playing almost like a sober documentary rather than a narrative film. Though fictional, it is a document of sorts, a chronicle of a crumbling marriage that often feels as honest and painful as if it were a nonfiction film about real people putting each other through absolute hell. Williams and Gosling play a couple spending a night away from their young daughter in hopes of renewing their faded romantic spark. Director and co-writer Derek Cianfrance intersperses the marital scenes with lovingly nostalgic flashbacks to the start of their romance six years earlier. Williams and Gosling’s performances range from sublimely sweet in the flashbacks to raw, ferocious and punishing in the present day. The result is a beautifully idiosyncratic portrait of a relationship that starts with the brightest of hopes and inevitably falters as the years and mileage accumulate.

RATED: R for strong sexual content, language and a beating.

RUNNING TIME: 112 minutes.

“Country Strong” hits cliched notes

By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press Some of the best country songs are the ones that tell a story — ones that feature vivid imagery, a strong narrative drive and a killer emotional payoff.

In telling the story of a selfdestructive singing superstar, “Country Strong” hints at the possibility of delivering that kind of moving experience, but ultimately it’s too meandering and uneven to ever truly tug at your heart.

Writer-director Shana Feste’s film occupies an uncomfortable sort of middle ground. It’s not rich enough, and its characters aren’t developed enough, to be a searing drama or a portrait of artistic torment; “Coal Miner ’s Daughter,” this is not.

But at the same time, it isn’t overthe-top enough to be enjoyed as a divalicious guilty pleasure like “A Star is Born” or “The Rose.”

Still, “Country Strong” has its moments, mainly in the music, all of which is enjoyable if not earthshattering and is actually sung by its stars. We already knew Gwyneth Paltrow had a voice on her from the dubious 2000 film “Duets,” which her father, the late Bruce Paltrow, directed. It even spawned a hit song for her and Huey Lewis: their remake of Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin’,” cheesy as it was. Here, you’d actually like to hear more from her: It would help us better get to know her character, six-time Grammy winner Kelly Canter, and the songs she does sing on stage are so massively overproduced, it’s hard to tell what she actually sounds like.

Instead, Kelly comes off as a jumble of cliches that could apply to any country star, rock star, actor or artist — any performer whose creative gifts are weighed down by internal baggage. She’s in and out of rehab and her boozy benders are

That’s where she is at the film’s start, and where she’s having an extramarital fling with one of the rehab center ’s employees, Beau Hutton (Garrett Hedlund), who has his own musical aspirations. Kelly’s husband and manager, James (Tim McGraw), pulls her out of treatment a month early to get her back on the road, and insists that a beauty queen and wannabe country starlet named Chiles Stanton (Leighton Meester) come along as her opening act.

Kelly wants Beau to open for her, and so they all end up embarking on a three-city Texas tour.

From there, “Country Strong” plays out as a series of flirtations and dalliances, breakdowns and inebriated episodes, none of which seems to carry any more significance than any other. And of course, there is the obligatory moment in which a vodka bottle gets thrown against a wall mid-tantrum.

As a sensitive honky-tonk hipster, Hedlund gets a chance to show a bit more personality than he was afforded in the recent “Tron: Legacy,” and Meester is endearing

as a Taylor Swift-style up-andcomer whose peppy, insipid lyrics belie a damaged past.

McGraw, the real-life country star who should, in theory, ooze authenticity in this setting, instead comes off as a bit of a cipher — and he’s the only actor who doesn’t get to sing. Feste’s script never gives James and Kelly the opportunity to discuss the loss of their unborn child, which devastated both their marriage and her career. Instead, she relies on a painfully clunky metaphor: a wounded baby bird, which Kelly finds at rehab, carries around in a box and feeds with a

dropper. Seriously.

What’s frustrating is that “Country Strong” has its moments.

A scene in which Kelly offers her veteran’s advice to Chiles has an honesty that the rest of the film often lacks, and Paltrow reminds us she really can act — and not just over-emote with her face covered in smeared mascara — when Kelly visits the classroom of a little boy with leukemia.

But when she’s saddled with trite lines like, “Don’t be afraid to fall in love, it’s the only thing that matters in life,” even the multitalented Paltrow can’t make them sing.

Jack Black needs a challenging role

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge As the only wide release on Christmas Day this year, Gulliver’s Travels had all the trappings of a megahit. It features a well-known story (based on Jonathan Swift’s 300-year old novel), a slew of fun actors, and a family-friendly format for the one week of the year when families have a daily chance of attending together. So what didn’t work out for the beleaguered comedy? Why the low box office totals after two major holidays?

Well...it’s a terrible movie, which is a good answer to that question.

I wish now that I’d skipped it and gone to watch The King’s Speech again.

This telling of the classic tale

begins with Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) working in the mailroom for the fictional New York Tribune.

When a new hire (T.J. Miller) both surpasses him for a promotion and ridicules his romantic timidity when Gulliver repeatedly fails to ask out the newspaper ’s lovely travel editor, Darcy Silverman (Amanda Peet), he gets going. A misunderstanding earns easygoing Gulliver a cub reporter story on the Bermuda Triangle - a fluff piece for sure, but one he hopes gets him a little closer to Darcy.

Without training, supplies, or half an idea of what he’s doing, he drives his boat right into an inverted whirlpool and lands in the world of the Lilliputians, the tiny denizens of a beautiful island nation.

After further uninspired misunderstandings, Gulliver goes from being an invading beast on the wrong side of the military (and their leader played

by Chris O’Dowd) to a local hero and advisor to the king (Billy Connolly). For a little while we’re treated to the romantic subplot between a laborer (Jason Segel, slumming after a big 2009) and the princess (Emily Blunt who does not play ditzy very well), but that really goes nowhere fast. Instead, the movie is a series of toilet humor jokes, bad puns, and the calamity of a big man (and Black is just as comically chubby as ever) in a little world. This is not inspired work.

Ingratiating himself with the royalty and turning things on their

ear in Lilliput earn Gulliver the role of protector. He then turns to defending them against the traitorous General Edward and hoards of their invading enemies, the Blefuscudians. Among their many tricks are a robot warrior that would be so exceptionally out of place in any movie that it felt right at home in this monstrosity.

A short sequence set in another of Swift’s fantasy worlds (Brobdingnag, if you care to think back on it) sees Black as a miniscule invader in a land of giants. This does nothing for the main story but muddle it hopelessly.

Black’s characterization of Gulliver is the same as every other character he’s ever played (from ‘Shallow’ Hal to himself in “Tenacious D”) . He’s slovenly,

unkempt, messy, and suffering from a serious lack of tangible motivation. That description, though, is exactly what we want from an actor who’s also funny, musically talented, at time, quite charming. What would we do with Jack Black if he weren’t a mop-topped case of arrested development? If he were cast as politician instead of a Guitar Hero addict? Gulliver is nearly the same guy as Dewey Finn in 2003’s School of Rock, but that’s an infinitely better movie. Somebody challenge this guy, and soon, or the act should be retired.

"Season of the Witch" disappoints

By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press So here’s the gimmick in “Season of the Witch”: It takes place during the 14th century, but everyone speaks in contemporary language, which might have been acceptable if the dialogue were clever or intelligent or funny or, you know, good.

Instead, Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman are the knights who say ... nothing of any particular note in a supernatural action thriller that’s never actually thrilling.

You expect this kind of schlock in January, but “Season of the Witch” isn’t even bad in an enjoyable way.

The scenery is drab, the battles are interchangeable, and no one seems particularly interested in being here.

At the same time, Dominic Sena (who previously directed Cage in “Gone in Sixty Seconds”) never flat-out goes for it in a schlocky, B-horror kind of way.

What we’re left with is just bloated, boring and utterly forgettable.

Cage isn’t even in full-on, wheels-off Cage mode here, sadly. And from the looks of it — the fact that he’s goateed, a little puffy and wears his hair in messy, chin-length waves — it held such promise.

He delivers his lines in a droning monotone, as if returning to the morose actor we knew in the late 1990s.

The one moment in which he busts out, snarling and screaming with his eyes narrowed and his teeth gnashed, it’s such a relief. And then it’s over.

When we first see his character, Behmen, he’s at the top of his game at the height of the Crusades, brutally slaying untold numbers of men in the name of God. With Perlman as his wisecracking sidekick, Felson, he’s unstoppable.

But once he realizes that, whoa, women and children are being killed, too, Behmen grabs Felson and together they leave the battleground, and the Church. (Bragi Schut’s screenplay vaguely hints at some sort of indictment of organized religion, then backs off in favor of one-liners and cheap scares.)

Upon their return, Behmen and Felson find that their home has been ravaged by the Black Plague; the general assumption is that this is the work of witches.

The dying Cardinal (Christopher Lee, covered in gnarly sores, squandered in just one scene) orders them to transport a suspected witch to

a faraway abbey for trial, or else they’ll be imprisoned for desertion. (We know from the “Hellboy” movies that Perlman has a knack for deadpan humor, so it’s a waste to have him make lame observations like, “As dungeons go, this one’s not so bad.”)

And so they set off on their journey, with the witch in question (Claire Foy) locked up in a cage, and with a motley crew of helpers in tow.

Along the way there are episodic, video-game style threats (a rickety bridge suspended over a perilous gorge, a treacherous and foggy forest, a pack of fakey, CGI-looking wolves).

It’s a slog from one challenge to the next, with no real tension building, and all the while the alleged witch plays coy about whether she’s actually a witch, pouting beneath her bangs, Kristen Stewart-style.

We know they won’t all make it to their destination. Who lives and who dies doesn’t really matter.

The ones who survive must face a pack of zombie ninja monks — and even that isn’t nearly as much fun as it sounds.

Traveling down Hermann’s Chocolate Wine Trail

hen we think of visits to the local wine trails, many times we think of summer or fall.

But actually, the majority of wineries stay open all year long.

You may not be able to sit outside and enjoy the weather, but many wineries offer nice indoor settings, with cozy tables, fireplaces, group seating and more.

With the next major holiday in the planning stages, why not think about a romantic Valentine getaway to Hermann, Mo. Hermann is well-known for its many famous wineries, great bed and breakfast establishments and quaint shops.

The annual Chocolate Wine Trail weekend is being hosted again this year on the weekend of Saturday, Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20.

Travel Travel briefs Ski newbies eligible for lesson deals in January DENVER (AP) — Dozens of U.S. ski areas are offering January deals on beginner lessons, especially ones for kids, as resorts woo newcomers during the lull after the December holidays.

During Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month, never-ever skiers and snowboarders can learn for free at some ski areas from an instructor — not a buddy or relative.

“Part of the reason for doing this is to encourage people to take lessons from professionals. That’s key,” said Mary Jo Tarallo, executive director for Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month, supported by industry groups.

Already this season, accidents have killed skiers and snowboarders on the slopes. Trained instructors emphasize mountain etiquette and safety but also know the latest techniques and equipment and their mountains intimately, said John Guay, director of skier services at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah.

Besides, “You really don’t want a friend or relative to have the wrath of your frustration on them,” said Jackson Hole Mountain Resort instructor Kurt Harland in Wyoming.

Deals and restrictions vary, but resort associations in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are offering free beginner lessons Jan. 3-9.

Colorado resorts that have traditionally offered a few days of free skiing to Colorado fifth-graders who sign up are throwing in a free lesson with free rental equipment for first-timers this January. Some Utah resorts have packages available for less than $40, with low prices for repeat visits so beginners can practice, and Ski Brule in Michigan has free lessons on certain days.

Overall, resorts in at least 30 states are offering lesson discounts in January.

For years, the National Ski Areas Association has spoken of needing to lure new people to the sport to replace skiers who might drop out as they get older.

However, shaped skis and better grooming to make ski runs smooth have made it easier for baby boomers to ride longer than their parents did, and they’re bringing kids and grandkids with them, association

President Michael Berry said.

“Baby boomers are sticking with us in a way that’s surprising even us,” Berry said. “Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month is really about bringing that next generation of young people to skiing and snowboarding.”

The National Ski Areas Association says about 89 percent of skiers and snowboarders last season were white.

The median age was 37, and about 60 percent were male.

“The growth that we see is on the West coast, particularly among Asians and Hispanics, particularly snowboarders,” Berry said.

Urban kids are being drawn by a skateboarding culture that’s crossing over into snowboarding, and they’re introducing friends to the sport, he said.

“To some extent, what will happen over the next 10 years as we go forward, we will be more ethnically diverse than ever before,” Berry said.

Tarallo estimates about 30,000 people took lessons in January 2010. Her goal is to double that this January, for the health of the industry and Americans in general.

Harland said big snowstorms are leaving fresh, fluffy snow for beginners to fall on.

Bill Donald of Cashmere, Wash., taught himself to snowboard around 1997 when he was 24, but he signed up his 6-year-old son, Jackson, for lessons at nearby Mission Ridge Ski and Snowboard Resort this week.

After watching Jackson in ski school, he said he’d recommend lessons for adults too.

“I sat there and fought tooth and nail to get on the lift. He learned to grab the rope tow within two or three times,” Donald said. “It’s probably the best money spent.”

Tourist spending in Hawaii rises by almost a third

third consecutive month that total visitor spending increased by double digits statewide.

Authority President and CEO Mike McCartney said Hawaii’s rate of recovery was well ahead of competing destinations, such as Mexico and the Caribbean. But the state’s tourism sector has a long way to go to offset recession-induced declines over the last two years, he added.

“This means that, more than ever, we need to continue our focused marketing efforts to maintain the momentum we’ve achieved in boosting arrivals and increasing visitor spending,” McCartney said.

Tourism authorities attributed the big rise in visitor spending in part to an 18.2 percent jump in visitor arrivals to the islands last month compared to the same month in 2009.

That included sizable increases in the number of tourists who flew to Hawaii from the West Coast and Canada last month, and also those who arrived by ship.

For example, 44 percent more Canadians and 76 percent more Japanese visited Kauai in November compared to the same month last year. About 27 percent more residents of the West Coast visited Oahu last month than a year ago.

But the total number of visitors who arrived in the islands between January and November of this year was up only 8.6 percent, compared to the same 11-month period in 2009.

Of the six Hawaiian islands the tourism report studied, visitor spending rose the most on Lanai, by 38.6 percent to $6.2 million.

Spending increased on the Big Island by 36.9 percent to $124.8 million; on Maui by 36.7 percent to $252.6 million; on Molokai by 33.5 percent to $2.5 million; on Oahu by 27.7 percent to $497.1 million, and on Kauai by 19.7 percent to $88.3 million.

Orthodontist hopes to increase smiles Junior Service Club’s Boundless Playground Project moving forward

By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge A local orthodontist has joined the list of those who are supporting the construction of a Boundless Playground at Township Park in Edwardsville.

Dr. C. David Brickman, of Brickman Orthodontics, presented a $5,000 check to members of the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Junior Service Club outside of his Edwardsville office recently.

Brickman said he wanted to give to this worthy project being coordinated by the local JSC. “Brickman’s Orthodontics is excited to contribute to the Junior Service Club’s Boundless Playground Project. It’s important for all families, regardless of abilities, to have a fun place to play and grow,” said Brickman. “We’re glad we can support such a positive project that will benefit the Edwardsville and Glen Carbon communities.”

JSC, a non-profit women’s service organization, came up with the idea to construct a Boundless Playground just a few months ago, and have since been trying to raise money for its construction.The new playground is expected to provide a place where everyone, with or without disabilities, can play.

It will support children and parents with aids – such as walkers, wheelchairs and other support equipment – and includes areas for sensory development for visually or hearing impaired children or those with developmental disabilities

such as autism or Down syndrome.

The playground will focus on children ages 5 to 12, as well as include a teen fitness area. It is also expected to accommodate 150 to 200 children at one time.

JCS member Christie Lampe is co-chairing the project with JSC member Kelly Schlechte.

Lampe said their goal is still to raise $400,000 and have it built by the spring of 2012.

She said fundraising efforts for the project are currently under way.

Lampe said the JSC was thankful for Dr. Brickman’s donation, and everyone who has donated to the cause.

“We are thankful for the community’s support and interest in our project,” Lampe said.

JSC is a not-for-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible.

Lampe said the club is also seeking state and federal funding, but is also looking for help from the community.

The JSC has set up other ways members of the community can donate, such as through sponsorships: $50,000 for a naming opportunity for the playground sections; $25,000 equipment sponsor; $10,000 picnic sponsor; $5,000 bench sponsor; $2,500 tree sponsor; $1,000 12-inch by 12-inch engraved paver; $500 8-inch by 8-inch engraved paver; and a $100 8-inch by 4-inch engraved paver.

JSC Past President Shelly Wolfe said if anyone is interested in learning more about the project, members are available to give presentations to

businesses or organizations.

In the JSC brochure for the project it states, “Nearly one in 10 children in the United States has a disability, some which are unseen. They cannot play on a traditional playground with their families and friends.”

According to Lampe, there is currently no place in the metro east offering such a playground – a place where a child with a disability can play, as well as a child without a disability, or a parent with a disability can go with their child.

“This will be the first boundless playground in the entire metro east area and metro St. Louis,” Lampe said.

Lampe said the club thought it was a great idea.

“Our kids love coming to the park,” Lampe said. “And there is nothing in the community for a child with a disability.”

Lampe added, “We felt our community needed this.”

The JSC is a non-profit women’s service organization that has been “striving to contribute to the betterment of those in need in the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area” for more than 70 years.

A serious “right” product Chef Michael Hollis gives Villa Marie Winery its flavor

O

n a recent visit to Villa Marie Winery in Maryville, I was taken aback to realize that the winery has only been open for two years. The reason I was shocked by that is the fact that it is already so popular. If you visit Villa Marie – winter spring, summer or fall – there is always a nice crowd, and sometimes a completely full house.

Although Villa Marie Winery seems to run like a well-oiled wheel, there are many facets behind the scenes that contribute to the success of the venue.

Possibly one of the most important spokes in that wheel would be Chef Michael Hollis.

Chef Hollis has been with the winery for nearly two years, starting there just three months after the grand opening. Wordof-mouth advertising has been so successful for them – partially for their excellent wine selections, but also in-part to the culinary creations of Chef Hollis.

Chef Hollis knows food. He started out at age 15 working in different capacities for a couple of restaurants. He washed dishes, mopped floors, bussed tables, whatever was asked of him. He dabbled in some food preparation and cooking when the chances were made available and realized that he had a great love for culinary science.

He studied at Forest Park Community College in St. Louis, of which he had nothing but glowing reviews to give their culinary program. “They are a first class culinary program. They teach you every aspect of culinary arts and take their time doing that, with their two year program, “ said Chef Hollis. “ I have recommended this program to a number of prospective culinary students and they have not been sorry. I have also worked with other Forest Park graduates and they are always great to work with. Forest Park has a well-structured program.”

About two years ago, he came on board at Villa Marie Winery and really loves being there.

Owner Judy Wiemann is a great proponent of a family feel with her staff and according to Chef Hollis, that is one of the best parts of his job.

“Judy and I get along great. She let me bring in people who I knew would do a great job and I have done that. I bring in people that are willing to work hard and learn too. All of the people in the kitchen do a great job and they also help out in any other capacity around the winery when asked. They might be cooking one day and helping to load grapes or set up for an event the next day. That is the great thing, they are all flexible and willing to do what it takes to get the job done. I have a team who works hard and puts out a serious ‘right’ product,” said Chef Hollis.

His staff may vary from day to day, but he rarely has any turn over. People who work for him

stay working for him. The family feel runs strong through the staff relationships and they all like it that way.

Chef Hollis mentioned his staff many times throughout the visit.

He leans very heavy on his sous chef Bill Eberts and other kitchen staff: Glenn Heflin, Chris Ranek and John Drost. He even has pulled in other staff to try their hand in the kitchen when they show an interest. “I have even pulled some wait staff in, and one in particular, I was very surprised at her performance. She was very good at it,” said Chef Hollis.

Chef Hollis puts a top priority on producing fresh, homemade, great tasting cuisine. He doesn’t try to make things you would find on a menu of an upscale dining establishment, but things that people in this community like to eat. “People around here don’t normally eat a lot of Europeon dishes, not that I don’t think that is great food. But the truth is that people around this community like chicken, beef and pork and that is what I try to use in my dishes.

I keep my menu small but good quality. I would rather do 10 menu items right than 20 items halfway,” said Chef Hollis.

He uses local products as much as he possibly can. His main

supplier is PFG. Fazzio’s Bakery in St. Louis provides their fresh bread products. Sausage comes from Trenton Meat Processing. And there are others.

Chef Hollis and Wiemann are currently working on a new menu, but they won’t change everything on the menu.

There will still be some of the great salads that many of the regular customers love and a number of the sandwich favorites.

But Chef Hollis is planning to add a Cuban sandwich, served as a panini with ham, pickle, roasted pork, swiss and a spicy dijon mustard. He is also adding lobster bisque and a wonderful broccoli cheese soup. Of course all are homemade and made fresh every day.

You will have to check back in February to find out what the other great additions will be, including a number of daily specials and dessert surprises.

The great, fresh, hand-trimmed ribeye steaks and fresh ground beef will still be a staple and won’t leave the menu. The Bistro style food with a homestyle flair will remain, just some tweaks to make it even more tasty.

Right now, the winery offers lunch service on Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. They have a great selection of appetizer selections on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, when they also offer live music.

Villa Marie Winery is becoming one of the favorite venues in the area to host banquets, weddings, showers, parties of all kinds and business events. Although they are booked for much of 2011, they still have some dates available throughout the year, and are already booking 2012. Dining Delights Quinoa's popularity a boon to Bolivia CARACOLLO, Bolivia (AP) — It’s as inhospitable as climates come for crop cultivation, the dry and rocky soils of Bolivia’s semiarid altiplain.

Miguel Choque can see his breath as surveys his fields of quinoa, the Andean “supergrain.”

In late March or April, the flowering plants will paint the rugged landscape yellow, green and red. Their diminutive seed, which powered Inca armies only to be elbowed aside by the wheat preferred by colonizing Spaniards, is unmatched in nutritional value.

Quinoa’s rising popularity among First World foodies — the wholesale price has jumped sevenfold since 2000 as global demand climbed — has been a boon to the poor farmers here in the semiarid highlands where most of it grows.

And that boom has transformed the lives of the largely subsistence farmers who grow it, though it remains unclear whether the large-scale commercial cultivation sought by Bolivia’s government is environmentally sustainable in the altiplain— or even welcome by growers.

President Evo Morales’ government has deemed quinoa a “strategic” foodstuff, essential to this poverty-afflicted nation’s food security. It is promoting the grain and has included quinoa in a subsidized food parcel for pregnant women.

Yet the higher prices quinoa is fetching have had an unanticipated impact where the grain is grown.

Some local children are showing signs of malnutrition because their parents have substituted rice and noodles for quinoa in the family diet, said Walter Severo, president of a quinoa producer ’s group in southwest Bolivia.

“Only 10 percent of it stays in Bolivia. The other 90 percent gets exported,” says Rural Development Minister Nemecia Achacollo.

Quinoa (pronounced KEEN-wah) provides 10 essential amino acids, is loaded with minerals and has a high protein content — between 14 and 18 percent. The FAO (U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization) says it is so nutritious it can be substituted for mother’s milk.

“This food is about the most perfect you can find for human diets,” said Duane Johnson, a 61year-old former Colorado State agronomist who helped introduce it to the United States three decades ago.

Quinoa isn’t a cereal. It’s a seed that is eaten like a grain, but is gluten-free and more easily digestible than corn, wheat, rye, millet and sorghum. And it can be substituted for rice in just about anything — from soup to salad to pudding to bread.

“I’ve got high-performance athletes that swear by it,” said David Schnorr, president of Quinoa Corp., the largest U.S. importer. It’s also

being embraced by the increasing number of Americans with food allergies or celiac disease, an immunological rejection of gluten, a wheat protein. NASA researchers consider it ideal for inclusion in possible future long-term space missions when crops would need to be grown on spacecraft.

Quinoa has been cultivated in the Andean highlands since 3,000 B.C., and grows natively from Chile north to Colombia, mostly in Peru and Bolivia. The varieties of this region of southwestern Bolivia — at 3,700 meters (over 12,000 feet) — are resistant to the freezes and droughts that periodically afflict it.

The crop — “chisiya mama” or mother grain in the native Quechua language — also grows in the San Luis Valley of Colorado at about 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) as well as in a growing number of countries including China and Mongolia, said Johnson.

“It’s very specific in the environments where it will grow,” he said. “It requires very cool days and even cooler evenings.”

He says Peru and Bolivia account for as much as 97 percent of global production.

And demand is booming. “ We ’ v e e a s i l y d o u b l e d o u r business in the last couple of years during the worst economic recession we’ve had in a long time,” said Schnoor.

In 2000, Bolivia exported 1,439 metric tons valued at $1.8 million.

In 2009, exports totaled 14,500 tons worth more than $25 million, principally to the U.S., Japan and Europe. The goal for this harvest is 30,000 tons, said Bolivia’s deputy minister of rural development, Victor Hugo Vasquez.

S c h n o o r s a i d p r i c e s s o a re d threefold in early 2008. A decade ago, a 12-ounce box of his quinoa, marketed under the Ancient Harvest brand, retailed for 99 cents in the United States. Now it costs about $4.50. It’s also available in bulk at natural food markets — and even Costco warehouse stores now carry it.

The indigenous Bolivians who cultivate quinoa are among Bolivia’s poorest and many lived until the late 20th century by barter.

It was the discovery of quinoa by the health conscious in wealthier countries that introduced these people to the life of the market, says Brigido Martinez, president of the National Association of Quinoa producers, ANAPQUI. Martinez traces the boom in quinoa’s popularity to a visit by the king and queen of Spain in 1987, when the royals sampled it, and the news media and the world took note. Food exporters in the coastal Peruvian capital of Lima, where it had been considered “poor people’s food” by the European-descended elite, took note and began buying it up.

It’s not by chance that most of the world’s quinoa comes from Bolivia.

In the 1990s, Johnson and fellow Colorado State University crop scientist Sarah Ward patented a high-yielding hybrid with the intention of spurring large-scale cultivation in the U.S. But they were challenged by ANAPQUI in an international court and abandoned the effort.

There are those in Bolivia who believe this scrappy grain could lift its altiplain out of poverty just as soy has become the economic motor of the country’s wealthier eastern lowlands. After all, quinoa fetches up to five times the price of soy beans in the U.S. and European markets.

Martinez doesn’t believe that can or will happen. For one, quinoa growers farm on a smaller scale (the country’s soy growers are mostly agribusinessmen with huge plantations).

But for a government that proudly declares itself “decolonizing” Bolivia in favor of its long downtrodden indigenous majority, the promotion of quinoa is a linchpin of an agricultural policy that favors the small holder over agribusiness.

Officials are working on details of a plan to boost quinoa production, including credits for farmers that never before had access to financing.

Many producers are suspicious, however, that the government could turn into a competitor.

“Its support is fine, but we’d like it to help with irrigation and research to improve the quality of the seed and soil performance,” said Martinez.

Meanwhile, some quinoa farmers have put their increased income to work raising more llamas and alpacas, whose waste is used as fertilizer and which also produce wool. And while most harvesting

is still done manually, some have abandoned the ox-pulled plow for tractors.

Some farmers believe current cultivation methods inadequate.

“The soils are tired and need nutrition. Production is dropping,” said Francisco Quisbert, an indigenous leader in the region where Quinoa Real is grown.

But other quinoa boosters caution that traditional, organic farming methods must be maintained to preserve the purity of the crop.

Consumers in the developed world don’t want quinoa grown with chemical fertilizers or pest controllers, said Schnorr.

However it plays out, Martinez, the producer’s association president, is not complaining.

“Quinoa isn’t lifting us out of poverty,” he says. “But we are living better.”

••• Despite quinoa’s rise in popularity, most people still are trying to figure out what to do with it.

Most recipes call for using it in pilafs and salads. But we wanted to offer up something a little different.

Its nutty flavor and grain-like texture are a nice contrast to the earthy and sweet flavors of a mushroom and Marsala sauce. And what’s better than a warm casserole on a cold winter night?

We used sweet potato and egg to bind the quinoa together and assembled the chicken Marsala similar to a shepherds pie — warm, saucy and hearty.

MARSALA CHICKEN QUINOA CASSEROLE Start to finish: 1 hour 15 minutes (45 minutes active) Servings: 6 1 medium sweet potato 2 tablespoons olive oil 12 ounces crimini mushrooms, sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced

3 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves, chopped 1 large yellow onion, chopped 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, divided 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cubed 1 cup Marsala wine 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1/2 cup heavy cream 4 cups cooked quinoa 2 eggs Pinch nutmeg 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese With a fork, pierce the sweet potato all over. Microwave on high until cooked and soft, about 6 to 7 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Heat the oven to 375 F. In a large skillet over mediumhigh, heat the oil. Add the mushrooms, garlic, thyme, onion, 1 teaspoon of the salt and pepper, then saute until the mushrooms have released most of their liquid and are beginning to brown and the onion is soft and translucent, about 8 to 9 minutes.

Add the chicken and cook until the chicken is browned and almost cooked through, about another 7 to 8 minutes. In a small bowl, mix together the Marsala, cornstarch and the cream. Add to the chicken, then bring to a simmer. Cook for 2 minutes.

Arrange the chicken and vegetables in an even layer over the bottom of 2 quart casserole dish. Set aside.

Peel the sweet potato into a medium bowl, discarding the peel. Smash the sweet potato and mix in the quinoa, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and the eggs and nutmeg. Spread this mixture over the top of the chicken and mushroom mixture. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until bubbling and crusty.

Education Education briefs SIUE School of Nursing to offer doctorate in nursing program In a move to address the future needs of the nursing profession, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Nursing is embarking on a new initiative, offering a doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), post-master’s degree program beginning in the fall.

The new degree program, designed to be completed in five-semesters, addresses the new regulations proposed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Currently, 132 DNP programs, including SIUE’s, are enrolling students at schools of nursing nationwide; while an additional 160 DNP programs are in the planning stages.

Kathy Ketchum, assistant dean for graduate programs in the SIUE School of Nursing, explained students will be “immersed in doctoral education through on-campus, week-long intensives, focused coursework, experiential learning, self-assessment and reflection on learning and project management skill development.”

SIUE Nursing Dean Marcia Maurer said the DNP will help master’s-prepared, advanced-practice nurses move to the next level of expertise. “Nurses prepared at the doctorate level will be able to develop practice, organizational, economic and leadership skills,” Maurer said.

“Building on their specialty practice, DNP graduates will be poised to become leaders as they design new models of nursing care, use evidencebased knowledge in decision-making, better evaluate health care outcomes, identify and manage health care needs of individuals, communities and populations, and use technology and information to create needed change in health care.”

Admission requirements for the DNP program at SIUE include: • Application to the School of Nursing and the Graduate School; • Graduation from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited master’s program in nursing; • RN licensing in good standing; • A minimum nursing graduate GPA of 3.0/4.0; • Narrative statements of applicant’s goals for the DNP Program and project; • Three letters of reference, with at least one from a person with a graduate degree in nursing or related field; and • A personal interview, among others pre-requisites.

Ketchum stated the SIUE program would be a transformative learning process for all individuals involved. “The program will transform excellent nurses into the future leaders of the profession.”
