Edward Joseph Silvio Picardi, MD, FACS, DABS, is an esteemed general surgeon with over thirty years of experience in the medical field. His extensive career has taken him through various states and countries, where he has made significant contributions to trauma surgery, advanced laparoscopic procedures, and volunteer medical missions. Dr. Picardi is renowned for his deep commitment to patient care, his advocacy for pro-life causes, and his dedication to both local communities and underserved populations internationally.

From Childhood to Classroom Born on February 15, 1957, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Edward Picardi's early fascination with medicine propelled him to the University of Pennsylvania, where he pursued and graduated with honors in Biomedical Engineering in 1979. His passion for the field continued to flourish, leading him to earn his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Hahnemann University in 1983.

Military Life and Surgical Training Post-medical school, Dr. Picardi commenced his surgical training at Wright-State University while stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB). Between June 1983 and June 1989, he completed his residency in surgery, honing his skills in various surgical techniques and procedures. In July 1989, he transitioned to a staff surgeon role at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, serving as a Major in the United States Air Force Medical Corps and participating in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

A Medical Journey in South Dakota In 1992, following his military service, Dr. Picardi transitioned to civilian practice, establishing a private practice in Rapid City, South Dakota. Over the next two decades, he emerged as a leading general surgeon in the area. His excellence was recognized in 2001 when the South Dakota Chapter of the American College of Surgeons presented him with the Outstanding Surgeon Award. During this period, he also served as President of the South Dakota Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He played a pivotal role in the development of the statewide trauma system, ensuring access to high-quality emergency care for residents.

Career Flourishes in Ohio In 2018, Dr. Picardi relocated to Steubenville, Ohio, to join Trinity Health Systems, a part of the Catholic Health Initiative (CHI). Here, he has excelled in general and trauma surgery, with over 250 robotic surgical cases to his name, including procedures like cholecystectomies and hernias. He also serves as a trauma consultant for regional EMS, contributing to the advancement of trauma care in the area.

Fundamental Research and Scholarly Articles

Dr. Picardi has significantly contributed to medical research, including graduate projects on the effects of streptokinase on venous thrombosis and pioneering the technique of laparoscopic pericardial windows. He has authored numerous scholarly articles and presentations, contributing extensively to the medical literature.
