Once thriving however the city was to become the target of a large number of invaders and conquerors (Assyrians, Persians, Ptolemies of Egypt etc.) In 58 B.C. the Romans occupied Cyprus and Pafos became the capital of the island. The city was decorated with theaters, odeon, villas and magnificent mosaics

4th A.D. century: Cyprus became part of Byzantine empire. Knights of the temple, Lusignans, Venetians and Ottomans. 

Till the 16th century Pafos was under various rules. The city under the occupation of The Knights of the temple became part of the kingdom of Jerusalem, then came the Lusignans, then the Venetians and then in 1571 the Ottomans. The Venetians built up the fort in the port of Pafos which was renovated by the Ottomans. This a period of decline for Pafos. In 1878 Pafos met the British occupation as Cyprus became a British colony. Since 1960 Cyprus is an independent country.
