A patron of our school As it is commonly known every school has its own patron. The patron of our school is one of the most famous woman: Maria Curie- Skłodowska. We would like to write something about her biography in order to let you know more about her lifestyle and career. We are also going to enclose you some photos which come from the museum concerning her phenomenon. The biography Maria Skłodowska was born on 7th of November, 1867 in Warsow (the capital of Poland). She had five siblings and she had rather tough childhood. Her father worked as a teacher, however, her mother run a school. When she was 8, one of her sisters died. Unfortunately, two years later she also lost her mother. When she was 15, she graduated the lower- secondary school with the first class honors. In 1891, she passed the exams on the faculty of physics and chemistry as the first woman in the whole history. Additionally, she made the thesis proposal from mathematics in 1894. On 26th of July, 1895 she got married with Pierre Curie and two years later she gave birth to her first daughter: Irenę. In this same year she also made her first research. What is more, she also discovered with her husband two new radioactivity elements: ‘polon’ and ‘rad’. From 1900 to 1905 she had the possibility of working in University in Sevres as the first woman- professor. In 1902, she got the decigrams of ‘RaCl’ and she pointed out its both physical and chemical features. In 1903, she became the laureate of the Nobel prize for discovering two radioactivity elements which had not been known up to this particular moment. Moreover, she also defended her Ph.D. thesis in this same year. One year later, she gave birth to her second daughter: Ewę. On 19th of April, 1906 her husband lost his life in a very tragic way, but she did not give up and in 1914 she got the Nobel prize.

In 1914, the First World War broke out and the contact with her polish friends was interrupted. In 1921, she went to US to visit this country for the first time, however, the last journey in her life took place in Poland, where she visited her friends, for ex. Bolesława Prusa (a famous Polish writer, he also got the Nobel prize). In 1933, she made her last lecture in the University in Sarbon. On 4th of July, 1934 she died of leukemia.
