Let's Be Real: Making arguments sound pragmatic Debates are often decided on the basis of which team was able to prove that their argument is likely to be the most impactful in the entire debate. Government might be able to show 5 different arguments with small impacts but if the Opposition is able to prove 1 argument with the largest impact in the debate then the opposition team will win.

Debates are not won by the number of arguments but rather by the scale of impact those arguments can implement.

1) How many people will the argument impact? Impacts are often based on numbers and the higher the number of people that we can impact the more impactful our arguments become. Hence, whenever we are trying to present an impact, try and prove why you have the highest number of people on your side.

This is how it is likely to play out with the sample motion mentioned above: Because tourists are now likely to have more money saved, this money is likely to be used to buy local goods and services from the communities they are visiting. This has a huge impact on ALL of the people living in these areas because it helps flourish their business and if they have more money they can spend to make their quality of life better. As a result, we impact large groups of people very positively.

Tourists visiting more often is a dream scenario for all the individuals within the local communities. Tourists end up spending a lot of money on their trips for things such as food, cultural artifacts, accommodation, transportation etc. If more tourists end up visiting it results in more income for the people in these communities.This impact includes but is not limited to professions such as farmers, cooks, carpenters, sculptors, doctors, taxi drivers etc.

2) What is the current state of the group that is being impacted? It is not enough to prove that we are impacting people. If an argument’s impact is shown to benefit the privileged class of society it is not a good argument as these people can do without more benefits for themselves. Impacts are more persuasive and better rewarded when we are able to show that they make the lives of vulnerable individuals better. By portraying the vulnerability of the group being impacted, you can frame that the impacts not only are a net positive but also an absolute necessity. You can portray vulnerability by discussing the problems your target group faces on a daily basis and why they do not have any alternatives.

Our argument has already proven why a large group of people re impacted. Why is it so important that these people receive hese benefits? Some of these individuals that we are enefitting are the most vulnerable within a country. They do ot have access to a regular income source as tourism is a easonal business and are oftentimes seen facing huge shortage of funds in the offseason. Due to a lack of resources they have also not had the opportunity to access education and training and hence are also locked out of conventional jobs. So extra tourists and extra spending by tourists brings some much needed help to these individuals.

3) To what extent are you making their lives better or worse? Making lives better or worse is a vague and generalized statement. In order to actually prove lives are getting better or worse we have to measure what the quality of life was before the argument and what it is likely to be after the argument. An effective way to do this is to talk about how they are likely to get access to certain goods/ services/ opportunities that they did not have access to before but can afford now.

As a result of the impacts mentioned above we can state with onfidence that this will significantly improve the quality of life f the people that we are trying to protect over here. Because f a lack of funds many of them struggled to meet basic needs uch as food, medicine, education. Now they will not have to worry about such needs anymore. This will lead to them living appier and more fulfilled lives and will also allow them the pportunity to build bigger and better things from here such as rowing their business or pursuing higher education.

Topic: THBT governments should prioritize promoting slum tourism over other types of tourism Slum tourism, poverty tourism, ghetto tourism or trauma tourism is a type of city tourism that involves visiting impoverished areas. Argument from Government: Slum tourism raises money for people living in slums and that helps them out in their life. 1. How many people is the argument impacting? - Usually large numbers of people live in slums. Around 100,000 people live in slum areas in Mumbai and Rio. So we will be impacting a large number of people. 2. What is the current state of the group that is being impacted? - Slum dwellers live in terrible conditions. There is a lack of food, medicine, and education. These areas are also very unhygienic and don’t have adequate security. They desperately need help.

3. To what extent are we making their lives better? - After this motion passes, slum areas will have more tourism inflow. Tourists will spend money there and people in that area will have more income. Previously, they could not afford to buy food and medicine but now they will be able to. Because there will be more tourists, the government will also want to make the area cleaner and safer.

The increase in tourism has resulted in them having a complete lack of privacy and compromises their safety and security. They have people coming over and littering their land and disrupting their everyday activities. Imagine if someone came into your house and wanted to stay there and take pictures of you. Preservation of Tourist Sites:

Governments can take a few steps in order to maintain and preserve tourist sites: Tourist Quota: Limiting the number of tourists that can visit every year will reduce things like pollution in those areas. Also closing down certain tourist spots for a specific time of the year will help nature heal itself and allow the authorities to manage the tourist sites with more ease.

Educational and awareness programs: Running awareness programs across local communities can help educate the locals in terms of how they can contribute to protecting their communities better.
