The Explorer

Meet Anthos, an EF Mentor We sat down with EF's Anthos to get some insight into the EF Mentor program. So, Anthos, what’s your role at EF? I’m the Activities Manager at EF London. I make the fun happen!

You sound enthusiastic! So, what is an EF Mentor? Well, we know that it can be challenging to move to a foreign country, so we have EF Mentors to help make things easier. We offer guidance and support so students can adapt to life in a new city and make the most of their experience.

So it’s a bit like being a coach? I believe a coach is someone who focuses on performance and reaching a target. A mentor is different because they only offer guidance; a mentor allows the student to discover their own direction.

Do you think students benefit from an EF Mentor? Yes, definitely! The students have told me before that it’s nice to know that there is always someone available to talk to, confidentially. I’ve had some really interesting conversations too - for example about how to become a ‘local’ in London.

Are there specific times you meet your students? We schedule chats to follow-up on our students’ progress during their course, but we are quite relaxed and informal. We know that a lot happens in a year, so it’s important for us to keep regular contact and be around if someone needs to talk. Ok thanks for your time Anthos. We hear you are taking some students for a fish and chip dinner tonight, in true English style. Enjoy!

Gabriele had the option to take either an Erasmus program or EF Academic Year Abroad. She reveals why she chose the latter. "One of the first reasons is simple - EF is older and more established. Over 20 years older in fact. I really got a feel for this when I spoke to an EF representative in one of their local offices, because they were so knowledgeable and really understood the long-term courses they were offering. EF is personalized. When I spoke to EF, they showed me how I could tailor my course to get the most out of my year. I could choose my own Special Interest Classes (SPINs),

how many hours I wanted to study per week, and they also had flexible start dates. The environment inspired me. The San Francisco campus has a strong academic feel with large, stateof-the-art classrooms. This was balanced perfectly with the comfort of sofas and chairs in the student lounge, where we could relax and gaze out through the window at the remarkable Golden Gate Bridge." Gabriele, 21, EF San Francisco.
