New York vs London Hot dogs vs crumpets; coffee vs tea; yellow taxis vs black cabs: It’s time to pit New York and London against each other to find your perfect place to study.

No two international cities are as similar as New York and London and studying in either allows you to immerse yourself in a cosmopolitan center of the world. Dig a little deeper, however, and the subtle contrasts between the two will make a huge difference to your study abroad experience. We’ve compared the two in a number of categories to make it a little easier to answer that million dollar/pound question: Where should I study: London or New York?

Nightlife and Entertainment London and New York are bursting with possibilities – and not just during the day. When the sun goes down, they’re both leading locations for nighttime entertainment. A worldclass theater district (Broadway in New York, the West End in London), all the cuisines you can think of (and even some you never imagined) and A-list gigs can be enjoyed in both.

Tasty Treats Both destinations are ready-made for food lovers. Every visitor has to look beyond, but not ignore, the stereotypical dishes these cities are known for. Afternoon tea and a big, meaty roast dinner are essential to London life while hot dogs, burgers, and bagels have been fuelling New Yorkers for decades. When you look further, however, you’ll discover dishes from across the globe, street food stands selling tasty concoctions and innovative chefs rustling up mouthwatering flavors that can’t be found anywhere else.

Freebies London excels at offering free things to do – perfect when you’re on a student budget. Checking out ancient artifacts at the British Museum and National History Museum won’t cost you a pound, nor will gazing at the acclaimed art on show at the National Gallery, Tate Britain or the Tate Modern. New York can’t compete with such great free activities, but you’ll still find

gems around the city – you just have to search a little harder.

Some museums, galleries and small concert venues are free (or pay what you like) on specific days.

Getting Around The Big Apple’s restaurants and bars never sleep – nor does its transport system. Its 24 metro lines run 24/7 while only three of London’s 11 lines run throughout the night.

New York’s subway is also better connected than its British counterpart with the MTA boasting 468 stations compared to London’s 270. Getting around New York is also kinder on your wallet with the average bus, taxi and subway ride working out cheaper than those in London.

Behind the scenes EF’s Director of Academic Management, Giorgio Iemmolo, chats to The Explorer about the benefits of learning a language with EF.

What are the academic benefits of long-term study abroad?

The benefits of long-term study abroad are tremendous.

In addition to making friends from all over the world and experiencing a new culture, long-term study abroad changes the way we think as it takes us out of our comfort zone.

While not immediately visible to students during their journey abroad, the positive impact of such an experience on their subsequent career, study choices and self-confidence is unequivocal.

What makes EF’s academics so special?

I’d say experience, innovation and the centrality of students.

We are a big team of qualified people who know what it takes to learn and live a language and the challenges it poses to people based on their background, first language, learning tradition and goals. We put students at the heart of our daily job, ensuring they reach their goals by providing them with personalized support all the way. There’s nothing better than

seeing a student leaving us completely transformed: Students return home with an increased knowledge not only of a language but also of different cultures.

What benefits are there to learning another language?

A language not only boosts your CV. To put it briefly, research shows learning a language makes you smarter: it boosts your problem-solving, multitasking and decision-making skills because your brain gets better at general cognitive processes. In addition, you become a sharper communicator even in your mother-tongue, because when you learn a language you – consciously or unconsciously – reflect on the structures of both languages and refine your skills in both.

#EFMoment Three cities, two countries, one epic year Dutch student Senna is spending her academic year abroad in the UK and US. We sat down with her to discuss all things EF. How has your EF experience been so far?

I’m loving every second of my time with EF! Everything is well organized, the staff and students are really nice, and there is always someone there to help if you need it.

Where should EF students visit in London?

It’s been incredible to explore London. My favorite place so far is Shoreditch, but I also love going to Soho.

Where’s next on your world tour?

After London, I’ll go to San Francisco for three months. I’ve no idea what to expect from the city, but I’m really looking forward to getting to know it. After that, I’ll spend three months in Santa Barbara.

Manchester is famous for being a cultural hub. Where are the best spots to connect with the city’s artistic past and present?

Manchester has a diverse cultural scene with amazing gig venues, galleries and museums. There are lots of different areas to explore and so many venues to mention! The Northern Quarter is famous for its great bars, boutique shops and street art. For live music, head to Night and Day Cafe, Matt and Phreds Jazz Club or Band on the Wall. Many famous bands and musicians have played in these venues.

The Northern Quarter is also home to Piccadilly Records – a vinyl store that is a Mancunian institution. HOME, an art-house cinema, theater and exhibition space, is also an incredible venue and cultural hub for the city; as is the Bridgewater Hall and the Lowry at Salford Quays.

We can’t talk about Manchester without mentioning football...

Manchester is definitely a city that is passionate about football. We run weekly tours of the United and City stadiums and visits to the National Football Museum, which is in the city center. We also offer tickets to Premier League and Champions League matches! It’s not just about football, though – the city is also home to Old Trafford international cricket ground and the Manchester Aquatics Centre. We’ve previously hosted the Commonwealth Games and most recently the Rugby World Cup. The Peak District National Park is also on our doorstep – it is the perfect location for any students who enjoy walking, cycling, rock climbing, kayaking and other outdoor pursuits.

Do you have experience of studying abroad?

I spent my third year of university on an Erasmus exchange program, so I know first-hand what it’s like to study a language as an international student. I spent half of the year in Berlin and the second half in Perpignan and had an absolutely amazing, life-changing experience!
