The Michigan Apple Crunch is a statewide event that promotes local food and farm to school programs by encouraging as many people as possible to “crunch” into a juicy Michigan Apple.

Apples

Apples are one of the largest & most valuable crops grown in Michigan.

Michigan harvests around 30 MILLION bushels of apples each year.

Michigan is home to over 17 MILLION apple trees.

Apples are grown on around family-run farms across Michigan.

Michigan apples are harvested from August – October.

Around 25% of the apples grown in Michigan’s are sold fresh…the rest are processed into things like slices, juice & applesauce.

Blake Farms

Blake Farms is a 3rd generation familyowned farm, orchard & cider mill.

Blake’s Orchard was started in 1946 by Gerald & Elizabeth Blake.

Blake Farms’ cider mill was built in 1968.

Brothers Peter & Paul Blake currently run Blake Farms.

Blake Farms LOVES visitors & offers educational farm tours.

Blake Farms is an 800-acre operation with 3 locations.

“Growing good times since 1946.”

Blake Farms is located in Armada, Michigan. different varieties of apples.

Fiber

Fiber supports movement through the digestive system.

Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that the body doesn’t digest; it simply passes through.

Soluble fiber dissolves in water…it helps regulate blood sugar levels and removes cholesterol from

Insoluble fiber is sometimes referred to as “roughage. ”

2 types of fiber:

1. Soluble fiber

Fiber helps to regulate the body’s use of sugar.

Insoluble fiber

BOTH forms of fiber are important & beneficial to overall health. ONLY found in plant foods.

Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water…it helps food move throughout the digestive system.

Dairy & meat products do not have any fiber.

Traditions with roots deep seeded in family.
