DebbieChapman asagraduateoftheUniversityofLondon,DeborahChapmanstartedherresearchcareeraslimnologistattheFreshwaterBiologicalAssociationintheEnglishLakeDistrict.Shesubsequentlybecameinterestedin monitoringtheimpactsofdisposalofsewagesludgeonaquaticorganismand thepotentialforhumanhealthimpactsfromaquaticpollution.In1986she joinedtheUnitedNationsEnvironmentProgramme’s(UNEP)Monitoringand AssessmentResearchCentre(MARC)inLondon,participatingintheinternationalmonitoringandassessmentactivitiesofUNEPandtheWorldHealth Organization(WHO),andassistinginglobalenvironmentassessmentprograms. In1988shebecamethedeputydirectorofMARCandtookresponsibilityforthe developingcountryworkshopsandtrainingprogram,andglobalenvironment datareviewandcompilation.AftermovingtoIrelandin1990,sheworkedasa freelanceEnvironmentalConsultantengagedmostlyoninternationalanddevelopingcountryprojectsforWHO,UNEP,andotherinternationalorganizations. ShehasassistedwiththecompilationofStateoftheEnvironmentreportsandhas contributedto,edited,andproducedmorethan20booksonwaterresourcesand environmentalmanagement,includingtheinternationallysuccessful WaterQualityAssessments:Aguidetotheuse ofbiota,sedimentsandwaterinenvironmentalmonitoring.
In1998shejoinedUCCbecomingthefirstlecturerinEnvironmentalScienceandthenHeadofEnvironmentalSciencein2013.Inrecentdecadesherresearchinterestshavefocusedonwaterresourcesmanagement, especiallyrecreationalandamenitylakesandreservoirs,developmentsandcurrentpracticeindesignand implementationofwaterqualitymonitoringprograms,andhumanhealthriskassessmentinrelationtothe useoffreshwaterresourcesandwastewaterdisposal.Drawingon30yearsofinternationalexperience,in2015 sheestablishedtheUNEPGlobalEnvironmentMonitoringSystemforWater(GEMS/Water)CapacityDevelopmentCentreatUCC.Thiscenterdeliverscapacitydevelopmentactivitiesinwaterqualitymonitoringand
assessmentworldwideforUNEP,includingsupportfortheSustainableDevelopmentGoalindicatorforgood ambientwaterquality.SheretiredasdirectorofthecenterinJune2021andnowactsinanadvisoryroleandas anindependentconsultant.

N.LeRoyPoff isprofessorofbiologyatColoradoStateUniversityandholdsa partialappointmentasdistinguishedprofessorattheUniversityofCanberra, Australia.SincereceivinghisPh.D.in1989,hisresearchhasfocusedonunderstandinghownaturalandhuman-causedhydrologicvariabilityregulatesthe interactionsamongspeciesandthestructureandfunctionofriverineecosystems.
