Infact,manybuildingswereofthetypical Swissdesigncharacterizedbyclean,asymmetrical lines,widelyprojectingroofs, andfacadesrichlydecoratedwithwoodenbalconiesandcarvedornaments.

NotrafficlightshungoverMainStreet.Instead,eachintersectionconsistedofaroundabout.Mostofthestoresoneach side ofthe road catered to the tourismtrade Inthe center ofitall, a diner seemed to be the hub, and her stomachletouta rumbletoremindhershehadn’teatensincedinnerthenightbefore.

“Soundslikeyoucouldeatsomething,”Rubyobserved “Oh,yes,”Anaissaid.“Somethinglight,atleast.Idon’twanttothrowupmyfoodlikelasttime.”

Ledgerdeftlymovedthecranethatliftedlogsfromthepileofstackedtimbertothehalf-filledtrailerthatwouldlugthe load to the processing plant. From there, the lumber would be milled down into flat boards and shipped to Jericho’s constructioncompanyinColorado Theworkkepthismindbusyandhisbodyfit Hewasn’tthetypeofmanwholikedsitting behindadeskandpushingpapers.ThatwasmorefittedtoJericho’stemperament,whichwasgreatfor analpha,andLedger washappyhewasn’tone

Thewalkie-talkiebeepedandhegrabbedittoanswer.“Yeah?”

Afewminuteslater,hesecuredthecraneandwatchedthetrailerrumbleaway Ledgerhoppedfromthecabandintoa golfcart,drivingitacrossthelumberyardwheretheofficetrailerresided.HegrabbedhiscellphoneandcalledJericho.

Hewokeupearly,brewedcoffee,andpoureditintoatravelmug

“Youcould’veknocked,”Jerichosaiddryly “Youdidn’thavetosleepinyourtruck”

Hefollowedhisalphaupthestairsandintothehouse.Thedeliciousscentoffresh-brewedcoffeeandbaconmadehim salivate Paytonstoodatthestovecookingbreakfast,andheslidontoabarstoolattheisland

He finallyparked inthe diner’s parkinglot and headed inside As soonas he opened the door, the smell of cloves surroundedhim.Itremindedhimofbakingpiesinthefall.Ofhome.Suddenly,hiswolfwokeupandpushedforward,wanting torollaroundinthescent Heplacedahandoverhischest,asifthatwouldholdhisbeastback,andmentallytoldhiswolfto settle.
