An Unexpected Collection

Ruthanne Burgard of Out of the Blue Polish Pottery & Gifts

With a recent expansion, Ruthanne Burgard is excited to share even more Polish pottery pieces with newcomers, fledgling collectors and long-time devotees of this treasured folk art at Out of the Blue Polish Pottery & Gifts in Carmel City Center.

23 ABSOLUTELIVING

It all started at a dinner party. Ruthanne and her family were living in Hamburg, Germany, for her husband’s job. She was hosting Thanksgiving dinner for their compatriots when a cake was presented on a beautifully patterned platter. Captivated by the intricate details and undeniable charm of this gift, she was eager to explore more, and soon she traveled to nearby Boleslawiec, Poland, to see the handpainted, one-of-a-kind pieces for herself.

She didn’t intend to start a collection on that trip more than twenty years ago. But she came back to Hamburg with a few pieces and realized they were not only stunning, but durable. Each carefully crafted piece of stoneware is microwave, oven and dishwasher safe. Even with constant rotation and four active children using them for every meal, they never chipped. “That made me love it so much,” shares Ruthanne, continuing, “It was so beautiful, and each piece was different, yet we used it every day.”

Continuing to collect a medley of designs, Ruthanne eventually swapped out all the kitchenware she could, down to the muffin pans, although, she tells me, you could bake a cake right in one of the coffee mugs if desired. “There are so many patterns,” she says, adding that each one is a true work of art, blending effortlessly into modern kitchens while adding a dash of old-world charm. Her collection became a hobby and a passion,

and only a year after her return to the States—almost by accident— Ruthanne opened Out of the Blue Polish Pottery & Gifts in 2006 in her family’s hometown of Monticello, Illinois. In 2018, inspired by shoppers traveling from Central Indiana to grow their collections, she opened a second location in Carmel City Center, attracted to the European feel of the district.

Ruthanne still makes trips every August to the Lower Silesia region of Poland for the Annual Polish Pottery Festival to source new patterns and shapes of the popular white clay stoneware direct from the factories. The designs are steeped in history and tradition, featuring rich cobalt blues, intricate filigrees, classic polka dots, whimsical creatures, vibrant florals and playful fruits.

Surrounded by the expressive pottery, Ruthanne is a study in contrast, quiet and serene, but when asked about her favorites, she lights up with enthusiasm, leading me to the lasagna pans that come in a range of sizes, each one more exquisite than the next. After that, she points through the plate wall, explaining that Polish pottery easily lends itself to mixing and matching. “It's very customizable,” she says. Finally, we end up in front of the coffee mugs, with so many shapes and sizes to choose from, including straight mugs, travel mugs and bistro or bubble-shaped options, as well as pour-over cone drippers for personal

At Out of the Blue Polish Pottery & Gifts in Carmel City Center, you’ll find an unmatched selection of patterns that cater to every taste and style. brewing. Ruthanne reveals these to be a very personal vessel. “It’s like picking a companion for the day,” she says, explaining that everyone gravitates to a style that suits their personality and coffee-drinking routines. She also assures that the premium stoneware keeps beverages hot for much longer than other coffee cups.

In these moments, the bold and artistic pottery is not the sole storyteller—it's Ruthanne herself who shares her genuine passion for these functional works of art. Her soft-spoken nature gives way to an engaging and heartfelt conversation, making it clear that the love she holds for her pottery isn't just about aesthetics—it's about the functionality, the artistry and the joy that each piece brings to her daily life.

“To me, Polish pottery is a way that I can bring beauty and joy to everyday life,” Ruthanne says, adding that it is rewarding to share her love of Polish pottery with avid collectors and those shopping for their very first piece. At Out of the Blue, she carries everything from salt and pepper sets and soup bowls, to drawer pulls and

home décor. The dedicated staff is knowledgeable and happy to help with any selection.

At its new location (right around the corner from the first Carmel shop), Ruthanne has room to display a wider variety of wares, along with a dedicated space for bridal registry. While Polish pottery makes a wonderful gift for any occasion, Ruthanne firmly believes it is the perfect choice for weddings and an ideal collection to start for newlyweds, emphasizing how well the colors and patterns complement one another, allowing couples to personalize their wish list with timeless designs.

As she looks to the future, Ruthanne is excited about the possibilities that her larger space offers. She continues to share her passion for Polish pottery in Monticello and with the community she has cultivated in Carmel, welcoming all to explore the charm and craftsmanship of these remarkable pieces. Here you'll find more than a store—you'll find a piece of Ruthanne's heart, a slice of Poland's rich artistic heritage, and a promise of enduring elegance that will grace kitchens and homes for generations to come.

THE FACE OF DERMATOLOGY

Dr. Melanie Kingsley has dedicated her career to transforming the way dermatology care is delivered in Indiana. After attending medical school and a dermatology residency at Indiana University School of Medicine, and pursuing a fellowship in Cosmetic Dermatology, Lasers and Surgery in Boston, she returned to Indianapolis, where she founded and ran the Cosmetic Dermatology and Laser Center at IU Health Physicians for 13 years before opening her own practice MK Dermatology in the spring of 2023.

Dr. Kingsley has always been at the forefront of dermatology innovation, actively participating in research trials, delivering lectures, authoring publications, and teaching as an assistant professor of dermatology at Indiana University School of Medicine. She stays current with the latest advancements in the field and is consistently bringing the best technologies and treatments to MK Dermatology, the only direct care dermatology practice in Indiana. “Direct care allows for better patient access and care. I can get patients in when they need to be seen and treat them the way I feel is best, not the way an insurance company dictates,” she explains.

This extensive expertise in both medical and cosmetic dermatology sets MK Dermatology apart and most dermatology concerns can be treated in the office, where they also offer cosmetic, surgical and facial treatments. With so many cosmetic clinics and medical spas opening, Dr. Kingsley advises, “Be vigilant about knowing the details on a provider’s training, experience, time in the field, along with their ability to prevent and treat complications, to be sure you are in the good, safe hands.”

Petite G Jewelers, Owner

With the latest jewelry designs, well-known classics and one-of-a-kind vintage pieces at Petite G Jewelers, owner Dana Friedman says one of her favorite things about being a business owner is curating a store with all of the things she loves. “The challenge of finding the perfect piece for a special occasion or to mark a significant moment in time fuels my passion for jewelry,” she says, adding that discovering historic heirlooms at estate shows and envisioning who a newly ordered necklace might go to also top the list.

After falling in love with jewelry as a teenager, and working more than thirty years in the industry (eight as a business owner), Dana Friedman is still excited by all of it. With an unrivaled selection of boutique designers, fine jewelry, fashion pieces and estate finds, and by offering custom jewelry, engagement and bridal pieces, along with heirloom repairs, Dana and her team at Petite G are a small but mighty force in the local jewelry scene, featuring many labels not often found in the area. She believes this enthusiasm for all of the facets the business of jewelry brings is carried through her entire team, each devoted to the business as if it were their own.

Nestled between the tight-knit neighborhoods of Meridian-Kessler and Butler-Tarkington, Dana says she values the friendships she has cultivated with her Petite G followers, cherishing the relationships over the transactions. “To me, jewelry is meaningful connection and purpose,” says Dana. “We go above and beyond with our guests and see them as longterm family and friends.”

THE FACE OF CHILDREN’S FASHION

At Lunch Money Boutique, couture has never been so cute. The thoughtfully curated children’s store in ButlerTarkington is a welcome addition to the small but mighty block of independent shops at 56th and Illinois. Here Shallan Hazlewood outfits newborns to tweens with a unique style and a commitment to high-quality clothing.

With a retail background and former experience owning a luxury home goods store in Lincoln Park, the native of Chicago loves the whimsical atmosphere at Lunch Money, where her vision reflects an understanding of children’s preferences—and those often shopping for them. Shallan has masterfully crafted a customer experience that balances attentive guidance and individual freedom. Unlike smothering salespeople who hover as a helicopter parent would, the team at Lunch Money takes a more refreshing and relaxed approach. Each one holds an understanding of the store’s inventory, brands and the importance of personal expression, but rather than pushing products, they listen to each customer's needs and offer thoughtful suggestions tailored to the child’s personality and style.

From vibrant patterns to soft, breathable fabrics, every piece is selected to make children feel confident, comfortable and, most importantly, themselves. Prioritizing sustainability and believing that a better future for our children begins with our choices today, Shallan seeks out eco-friendly materials and partners with ethical manufacturers who share her commitment to responsible production. As fast as fashion changes, Shallan says the store is more trend-conscious than trend-driven. “We want to elevate kids' style with clothes they can play around, get dirty and have fun in, but will look amazing, too,” she says, adding that, to her, this type of clothing truly celebrates childhood. Raye Skin Studio, Owner

As an experienced makeup artist specializing in bridal makeup, Rachel O’Brien leaned into skincare, expanding to esthetic treatments several years ago and recently opening Raye Skin Studio, a luxury boutique skin and beauty studio in downtown Westfield. The feminine space, influenced by European design, offers highly specialized facials waxing and makeup applications, as well as an open-concept express facial bar, providing microtreatments under 30 minutes, a favorite option for women on the go, says Rachel.

At Raye Skin Studio, Rachel believes in a more holistic, non-invasive approach to skincare. “I’m a firm believer that transformative results can be achieved with less invasive treatments,” she says, refusing to agree that costly treatment and long downtimes are the solution. She continues, “Our skincare philosophy puts a huge focus on specialized facial massage techniques such as lymphatic drainage, which helps to sculpt and detoxify.” Some favorite treatments offered are the Lift & Sculpt Facial, Notox Facial, and Hot & Cold Therapy Facial, and all treatments are customized to each client’s specific skin concerns. “While some devices are always necessary, at Raye Skin Studio, we believe the hands, when combined with the right products, are extremely powerful tools,” she says.

Rachel understands that the journey of entrepreneurship is never easy but says that seeing adversity as an opportunity for growth and staying resilient is essential. “My vision is continued growth and serving the community in ways where I see a need,” she shares, revealing Raye Skin Studio’s plans to soon launch the R+R House of Wellness. Ever since, she has grown it into her very own by adding distinctive women’s clothing and accessories, expanding to a second location in Carmel City Center and moving to a beautiful new space in Noblesville this past summer. “It’s been an exciting adventure,” says the longtime Westfield resident.

THE FACE OF DESIGNER FASHION

8Fifteen, Owner

With an artistic heart and an eye for style, Elizabeth Lechleiter feels at home inside 8FIFTEEN, the fashion-forward Broad Ripple boutique she calls her own. “This store is my happy place, and I can honestly say that this has been one of the best years of my life,” she says. Elizabeth thrives when she’s being creative. Holding a BFA in textile design from Xavier University in Cincinnati and a degree in fashion design from Parsons School of Design at the New School in New York City, Elizabeth served as manager for the flagship Ted Baker store in Midtown Manhattan before moving home to Indianapolis, where she embraced the opportunity to manage 8FIFTEEN.

In 2022, she purchased the business and has spent the past year making it her own, adding new designers and expanding the brands, and growing the range of price points, silhouettes, accessories and gifts for everyone. Her favorite addition might be the art by Kerri Rosenthal—bright and upbeat—and enhancing the mood and welcoming atmosphere.

“One of my goals as a small business owner is to make every single person feel welcome as soon as they open the door,” says Elizabeth, emphasizing her commitment to each customer. Here, Elizabeth and her dedicated team make it their mission to encourage every shopper’s personal style, explaining that fashion comes and goes, but personal style lasts forever. “We are all blank canvases. Clothing and fashion are a form of expression that speaks without having to use words,” Elizabeth says. “This creative approach, in my mind, opens the door for endless possibilities.”

THE FACE OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

As the area’s only woman-owned architectural design firm in the luxury residential market, Emily Handke Design (EHD) stands out with one-of-a-kind custom homes tailored to clients’ individual personalities and lifestyles. Owner and lead designer Emily Handke, a highly organized, artistic, well-traveled, design-loving mom, believes she was born to be an architectural designer, collecting inspiration at every turn. She stays on the cutting edge of the industry and consistently exceeds client expectations with her innovative approach and attention to detail.

With an extensive background in luxury residential design, Emily opened her firm in 2021, recently adding a third senior architectural designer to the team and expanding across the state, aiming to offer fresh ideas and custom architectural details to every home she designs. “This outside-of-the-box approach really tailors our clients’ homes to how they live,” she says, adding that being a mom gives her a unique perspective and understanding of how homes are actually used, which often influences her designs. “We make sure to include every single wish-list item while always keeping budget in mind,” she adds.

After on-site and design kickoff meetings, where Emily and her team take copious notes, a complete 3D model of the home design is produced in-house, another aspect unique to the firm. “The first design presentation with our clients is done entirely in color and 3D, showing the topography conditions and all exterior material selections,” she says. The goal at EHD is to maintain meaningful relationships with clients and industry partners throughout the design process and beyond, Emily says. “Being able to maintain these positive relationships is what really matters to me.”

THE FACE OF MEDICAL AESTHETICS

Wise Aesthetics Owner, Nurse Practitioner

Cristina Wiseman, known as Crissy, earned her nursing degree 25 years ago and began as a registered nurse in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Trauma at Riley Hospital before becoming a Nurse Practitioner and earning two masters degrees a decade later. With the new title came a new role working in general plastics with the chief of plastic surgery at IU Health. “I am grateful for that position,” says Crissy. “The experience and education were extremely valuable to me in my position today as a provider.” Later, she began work with a prominent facial plastic surgeon in Indianapolis, where she gained not only knowledge but love for the art of facial aesthetics and injecting.

The Zionsville mom of three went on to open a boutique medical aesthetics practice of her own, rebranding to Wise Aesthetics in 2022. Here, Crissy and her accomplished team empower patients with a personalized approach that prioritizes education and natural-looking results. Crissy believes her team stands above the rest as they are not only experienced (no provider at Wise Aesthetics has practiced less than eight years), but they each have an artful eye. “You can be educated and trained,” she says, “however if a provider does not have both experience and an artistic eye, the outcome will never be as good.”

At Wise Aesthetics, great pride is taken in the natural and nondetectable results they provide to clients, focusing on relationships and results, not transactions. “Our approach is developing a plan or ‘journey’ for each of our patients that is individualized,” she explains. Wise Aesthetics is a results-driven practice, utilizing all facets of nonsurgical aesthetics to treat many common concerns.

THE FACE OF CUSTOM CHARCUTERIE & FAMILY-STYLE MEAL PREP

Sprig + Plate, Owner

After almost a decade of operating a meal prep business and marketing by word-of-mouth, Molly Wilson took Sprig + Plate to the next level earlier this year, opening a commercial kitchen and storefront, which she credits for creating many opportunities for growth and recognition in the community. “I went from prepping 10-20 meals by myself each week to the 200+ meals our team now preps weekly,” she says. “There are so many families who want to provide their families with clean, healthy meals but don't have the time or energy to do it themselves.” Molly cares deeply about providing wonderful food for her clients and is fully invested in the process from start to finish.

In addition to meal prep, Sprig + Plate also offers custom grazing boards and boxes for parties and events, featuring artfully arranged meats, cheeses, veggies and fruits that are fresh and delicious. “We have innovated our process over the years to make sure that when we deliver a custom grazing board, it is built to maintain its beauty even as it is being consumed,” she says, adding that the team is obsessed with beauty, freshness and customization, and credits this commitment to a large number of repeat clients. Wrapping up one of the best years yet, Molly believes her business continues to flourish because she is always open to new opportunities. “My philosophy has always been to say ‘yes’ to the next thing that makes sense,” says Molly, who is constantly looking out for new trends, tasting new foods and soliciting feedback to ensure her offerings keep everyone excited.

THE FACE OF ART CONSERVATION

Jean Easter

Easter Conservation Services, Owner

When it comes to museum-quality conservation, Jean Easter is the expert, specializing in art, antiques, furniture and frames. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, Jean worked in frame conservation at the Indianapolis Museum of Art before opening her SoBro shop, Easter Conservation, more than 20 years ago. She has traveled the world studying various conservation techniques for frames, paper and antique furniture. Jean and her team are happy to take on challenging projects and even shattered heirlooms, respecting every item with the dignity it deserves. “We handle every object as precious as possible, working precisely but without taking away from the age and patina of the item,” explains Jean, who sees herself as a steward of culture.

Conservation, she points out, is different from restoration, as the process requires all procedures to be reversible. Jean and her team (all holding Fine Art degrees and trained in conservation methods) hold themselves to the standards and ethics of the American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC), using the latest advances in the field. “To me, art conservation is important because it is preserving our cultural heritage for generations to come,” she says, adding that matting and framing are essential, too, to keep the art intact as it ages. Therefore, she also offers archival matting, framing and hanging services, with an unmatched selection of fine European antique picture frames in the Midwest. “If you can’t find it here, it probably doesn’t exist,” says Jean of the frame selection, adding, “And if we can’t find it, we’ll make it.”

Visit Easter Conservation Services at 1134 East 54th Street in Indianapolis for framing services, art consultation and conservation. For more information, find easterconservation.com online and follow @mjeaneaster on Instagram.

SLICE of PARADISE

An Absolute Guide to Local Pizza.

Pizza is a universal favorite across landscapes and cultures, and with some truly exceptional local pizzerias, you are in the right place. For National Pizza Month, we found the best slices around—whether you prefer the classic sausage and pepperoni at Arni’s, the adventurous Basilica at Bazbeaux or the praiseworthy Chicken Gouda at Pies & Pints, we’ve got you covered.

Jeff Berman, owner of Bazbeaux, once joked that selecting a favorite pizza from their menu was akin to choosing a favorite child. It’s an impossible task. How can one possibly play favorites when faced with so many amazing choices? So here we invite you to embrace all of the options and celebrate these mouthwatering offerings, one pie at a time. We know there is a slice for every mood, every craving and every occasion.

Pies & Pints

Ranked among the nation’s best 50 pizzas by enjoytravel.com, and with a locally sourced menu featuring seasonal toppings, it’s hard to go wrong at Pies & Pints, where they specialize in craft pizza and beer. When it comes to crowd favorites, the Chicken Gouda Pie (with applewood smoked bacon, red onions, chipotle crema and scallions) has everyone cheering, but a range of house-made, handtossed, stone-baked pies are offered. You can also build your own!

Jess Godbey, Director of Marketing, believes that the care with which the recipes are crafted makes the pizza stand out, but the culture of the restaurant—for both guests and associates—is particularly special. “We always aim to provide a superior experience for everyone who walks through our doors day in and day out. We’ve truly got something for everyone and will do everything we can to satisfy the wants and needs of our guests,” says Jess, adding the amazing char-grilled hot wings don’t hurt either.

Bazbeaux

bazbeaux.com

For over 35 years, Bazbeaux has woven itself into the fabric of Indy’s culinary culture, becoming synonymous with gourmet-style pizzas and memorable dining experiences. All three locations treat patrons to an eclectic and vibrant atmosphere, but we recommend savoring a specialty pie (with an Antipasto Salad and a glass of wine, of course) on the patio in the heart of the Carmel Arts & Design District along the Monon Trail.

At this iconic establishment, meticulously handcrafted and oven-fired pizzas take center stage, boasting a choice of crisp crusts, including white, wheat and gluten-free, and adorned with traditional and exotic toppings that come together in audacious and delectable combinations. Owner Jeff Berman won’t claim a favorite but takes pride in the house-made ingredients, including dough made from scratch daily, chorizo and Italianspiced pork sausage, and irresistible fresh pesto. Try the loaded Colossus—featuring the house-made Italian sausage (among other meats), or the Basilica—where pesto takes the place of traditional red sauce.

Arni’s

“Meet you at Arni’s” is more than a slogan. It’s a way of life for loyal, pizza-loving fans. “Many generations of families have been our clients,” says Kurt Cohen, who runs the business with his brother Brad, in the legacy of their father (the original Arni) by valuing the community they serve. This old-school approach produces consistently great pizzas, top-notch service and just the right blend of nostalgia to leave customers craving more.

While the full menu includes much more than pizza, the iconic thin crust and classic toppings, like finely crumbled sausage and chopped pepperoni, are what Arni’s traditions are built on. You can always build your own, but venture to try specialty combinations like the White Wedding with bacon, tomato and Alfredo sauce and the Maui Zowie with ham, pineapple, pepperoni and spicy barbecue sauce. Kurt says you can’t go wrong adding the Junior Salad to your order—it’s the most popular menu item, featuring fresh greens with turkey, ham and cheese.

A TURKEY TUTORIAL

DO know what kind of turkey you are selecting and understand that how it was raised matters.

Joe's Farm Fresh Turkeys are a sustainably raised crossbreed of heritage black and domestic white, guaranteeing richness and a higher percentage of white meat. Sustainably raised birds are treated better, resulting in a more tender and tasty turkey.

DON’T settle for the USDA version of “fresh.”

According to the USDA, “frozen less than six months” still means “fresh.” But freezing closes the meat, resulting in long cook times, tough consistency and less ability to hold moisture. Joe's Farm Fresh Turkeys are honestly fresh, processed just days before Thanksgiving in Ohio by our own Farmer Karl Kuck.

DO rinse your bird inside and out with cold water before roasting. Pat the bird dry with paper towels inside and out, then dry rub with generous amounts of kosher salt or a favorite turkey rub. Remember to wash your hands frequently when handling poultry.

DON’T stuff the turkey.

Stuffing pulls moisture from the turkey into your stuffing, meaning you’ll need to cook the bird longer to kill any pathogens in the stuffing, resulting in less moist meat and the potential to overcook.

DO oven-roast your turkey. This is the standard way to cook a great bird. Visit joesbutchershop.com/turkey-instructions for Joe’s step-by-step guide to preparing, roasting and carving the perfect turkey.

DON’T cover your cooked turkey with foil after you pull it from the oven. Wrapping a hot turkey in foil not only traps heat, but it produces steam, which can turn crispy skin soft and soggy.

DO take copious notes every time you cook a turkey.

You can document what works and what doesn’t so that you can become a turkey expert over the years.

DON’T wait to order your turkey from Joe’s Butcher Shop.

You can order your Joe's Farm Fresh Turkey now at joesbutchershop.com
