Holiday Gift Guide By Susan Salaz
You don’t need to wait until Small Business Saturday to support your favorite boutiques around town. We’ve curated a luxurious gift guide aimed to please everyone on your list and give some love to the local shops.
T
he customizable house-made bath salts at Bath Junkie (741 Hanover Place, Carmel City Center, bathjunkiecarmel.com) will leave you glowing. “Lavender essential oil is one of our most popular scents, but going into winter we love the Spa Day blend with eucalyptus, peppermint and green tea,” says owner Melissa Farmer.
Sustainable and ethical retail is essential this shopping season—therefore, clothing and accessory company Sidney Byron (sidneybyron.com) should be at the top of your list. We love the cork yoga mats and quilted mat bags, and owner Christina Kite agrees. “Going into the holidays is the perfect time to find your Zen by getting down on the mat for a stretch,” she says.
“If you're looking for great age-appropriate gifts for the little ones, we have what is on their list, and wonderful games and crafts for the whole family,” says Teneen Dobbs, Principal at Kits & Kaboodle Classic Toys (723 Hanover Place, Carmel City Center, kitsandkaboodletoys.com). She encourages families to play together this winter holiday, and recommends the stacking game Animal Upon Animal, from HABA, perfect for the young and young at heart. (promotional content)

Out Of The Blue Polish Pottery & Gifts (727 Hanover Place, Carmel City Center, outofthebluepottery.com) is the best destination for unique and functional bakeware and table service. Each item is hand-painted, and owner Ruth Burgard especially loves the playful soup mugs, with their whimsical handle. She insists they aren't only for soup, but are perfect for snacks and ice cream sundaes, too.
For a high-quality fashion statement that will last many holidays to come, Hammitt handbags will have you at hello. They are a best seller at Purse Strings (Clay Terrace, Hamilton Town Center and The Fashion Mall, pursestrings. shop), the only local purveyor of the designer brand. Owner Paul Braun makes it a point to feature in-demand handbags and home décor items at his three locations, but also stocks local labels like DD Bird and Re-Issue Books.
Give a toast to this magical time of year with a colorful set of Jaime Haydon Chateau Baccarat tumblers from Charles Mayer & Co. (5629 N. Illinois Street, Indianapolis, shop.charlesmayer.com). Claudia Ryan, owner of the city’s premier gift destination, points out the different faces on the bottom of each glass, saying, “I think these offer something new and fun, but also with a contemporary aesthetic.” (promotional content)

The tie-dye Weekender Pullover from Z Supply, available at Lily & Sparrow (724 S. Rangeline Road, Carmel, lilyandsparrowboutique. com) is laid-back luxury. “It’s the ultimate cozy piece, and it pairs great with both leggings and denim, making it so versatile,” says owner Jen Miller, adding that it checks all the boxes that make a perfect gift: classic, easy and cute. And don’t forget the stocking stuffers—Miller also suggests the Melati Natural Perfume, made with essential oils.
Petite G Jewelers (5609 N. Illinois Street, Indianapolis, petiteg.com) is a true gem among Butler-Tarkington/ Meridian-Kessler boutiques, with a range of sparkling inspiration any time of year. Owner Dana Friedman loves layering her jewelry and insists it’s okay to mix styles, colors and textures. The Walters Faith chainlink toggle bracelet is a tasteful bit of modern arm candy to add sparkle to any holiday wardrobe.
For all things chocolate, visit Lori Sonner and her team at DeBrand Fine Chocolates (8685 River Crossing Blvd., Indianapolis, (317) 669-0955). While it’s difficult to choose just one, Audree Beere (business operations manager at the headquarters in Fort Wayne and daughter of DeBrand founder Cathy Brand-Beere) believes DeBrand truffles are the perfect gift for the ultimate chocolate lovers in your life. “These twelve incredible variations seem almost too beautiful to eat…almost,” she says cheekily, adding, “Every oversized piece is individually and artistically designed, but their true beauty lies within. Each silky, rich truffle is like a petite luxurious chocolate dessert.”
Celebrate all 12 days of Christmas with a Pawty Pack from Daniel’s Vineyard (9061 N 700 W, McCordsville, danielsvineyard.com). Kim Cook, owner, says this collection is one of their favorite traditions. “Our eldest daughter and artist, Jenna Cook, recreates 12 very special pets in watercolor to adorn each can.” You can feel good about indulging in the Fireside Sangria, Winzer White and Rosé wines—a portion of the proceeds benefits the Humane Society of Hamilton County.

Embracing Life's Blessings Pam Ellis of The Secret Ingredient Photography By Gabrielle Cheikh Noel | Artwork By Eduardo Peña
The pops of color and feminine flair found throughout The Secret Ingredient are more than just fashion statements. To Pam Ellis, each item and accessory in the shop is a blessing—compelling women to express their individual personalities with a little sparkle and shine. Pam Ellis is a true believer. She even has the word “believe” tattooed on her wrist as a constant reminder. “I want all women to know that if you put your mind to it, you can do anything you want. Never stop believing,” she says. The newly minted owner of The Secret Ingredient women’s boutique counts herself as proof that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible. She also believes in the power of life’s blessings. “I thank God every single day for where I am. There are so many blessings that have paved the path to this shop.” Pam, who grew up in Walton, Indiana, spent 27 years in Terre Haute, where she studied apparel and textiles at Indiana State University, raised a family and owned Roger’s Boutique, a small clothing and jewelry shop. When her life changed six years ago and took her to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, she closed the boutique, but she wasn’t ready to give up serving women through their fashion needs. For two years she worked in the

couture department at Nordstrom Aventura near Miami, and while she found this to be valuable experience in the industry, she also felt a strong pull toward another route. “The whole time I kept thinking about a lifelong dream I had to become a flight attendant,” explains Pam. Many middle-aged women might brush a desire like this off as wanderlust, but Pam decided to go for it, and she soared. After her training, Pam began flying with Mesa Airlines out of Louisville, Kentucky, and had such a knack for her new-found career that she even became an Initial Operating Experience (IOE) instructor. In this position, she applied the same philosophy to the girls in training that she did to the gals she once styled, nurturing them and building their confidence—the best accessory a girl can own, Pam says. Although she loved the experience and will always be glad that she followed her heart (as she encourages everyone to do), Pam realized she didn’t have to be 40,000 feet in the air to fulfill her dreams. So after two years in the sky, the airplane hatch closed, allowing another door to open and another blessing to come into view, taking Pam back to fashion—and Florida— once again. In February of 2020, Pam joined her longtime friend and fashion mentor, Juetta West, in Daytona to oversee operations of a new active wear line and shop that Juetta had launched there. Although the time was cut short with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic just two months later, the experience with Juetta is not one Pam will soon forget. “Juetta made me whole again,” says Pam, explaining that having been married for 27 years, finding her way after divorce was a life-changing experience. “You have to find out who you are and what you want to do all over again.” Her time with Juetta not only helped her get her own sparkle and shine back, but it crystalized her commitment to empowering women through fashion. According to Pam, “Life sends you just the blessings you need, exactly when you need them.” With everything closed during the
COVID-19 shutdown, she was able to travel home and spend time with her family and ailing father. Her dad ended up passing away that April, and she is grateful that she could be with him during his final weeks. As the pandemic shuttered many shops across the country, including Juetta’s Daytona location, Pam was once again forced to follow her heart and find her own way. This time, opportunity came knocking during a casual lunch with a friend who knew of a shop that needed a manager. Coincidentally, Pam knew the owner through a family friend, and in August of 2020 she accepted the position as manager of The Secret Ingredient in Indianapolis.
Pam Ellis plans to continue building on the success Jeanne Rush created at The Secret Ingredient, carrying many of the same designers along with some new finds of her own, including a formal wear section. She is also committed to following Jeanne’s path of giving back to the community by sponsoring events such as the Stars of Pink Fashion Show and Dress for Success.
Jeanne Rush started The Secret Ingredient in 1979, expanding from the original Richmond, Indiana, location to Dayton, OH, Ave Maria, FL, and Indianapolis. Anchoring the northern corner of the Shoppes at 56th and Illinois, The Secret Ingredient has been a shopping destination for ladies in the tight-knit communities of ButlerTarkington, Meridian-Kessler, Broad Ripple and beyond for many years. To Jeanne, an avid donor to many non-profits in the area, the business wasn’t just about selling clothes— it was about caring for people. When the pandemic hit, Jeanne says her priorities shifted. After 41 years, she woke up one day praying about how she would move to the next chapter
ABSOLUTELIVING
of life—one that allowed her to spend more time with her children and grandchildren. She knew that if she were to sell the shop, the new owner would need to be just the right fit. “I wasn’t just selling a store,” Jeanne says. “I wanted to find someone that had the same passion.” She found that passion in Pam, which to Jeanne, was also a blessing. When Pam considers the important and influential people in her life, her mother, Pat, and children, Christian and Cache, are the first in mind, but when it comes to the women who have made her who she is as a businesswoman, her mentors Juetta and Jeanne are at the top of the list. “They believed in me, and made me ‘me’ again,” says Pam with gratitude. And this year, there is another group of ladies among her many blessings—her incredible employees. Marilyn Beeler, who has worked part-time at The Secret Ingredient since its inception (and even before, when the location was known as Tarkington Tweed), says the staff fully supports Pam in her new role. “She is a vibrant and energetic force in the store,” Marilyn says, adding, “We’re all hoping a lengthy success is in her future.” That is Pam’s hope too, and now, just as Juetta and Jeanne did for her, Pam is able help women find their confidence, or “sparkle and shine,” as she calls it. “I love making women feel good, and I love letting women know that it doesn’t matter where you are in life, and that you can do whatever you want to do.”
Visit The Secret Ingredient at 5631 N. Illinois Street in Indianapolis. Find out more about Pam and the shop online at thesecretingredient.us or follow @ secretingredientstore on Instagram.
The Secret Ingredient has long been a fashion destination among the Shoppes at 56th and Illinois, with women’s styles and accessories ranging from formal wear to relaxed fit and everything in between. “It is my goal to stock items you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the city,” says owner Pam Ellis.

Human beings are drawn to fire, and fire draws us to gather together. A home's hearth has traditionally been a safe and warm gathering place for families. Today, our fireplaces still invite us to be present with one another, and still hang our stockings up, with our hearts full of hope.
R
ed-hot coals, glowing embers and crackling flames have naturally attracted our attention for hundreds-of-thousands of years. This connection is burnt into our human DNA, and yes, the pun is intended. Fire has always been an important tool in modern civilization, and although an open flame is no longer a necessity for safety and sustenance, it still draws us together today. Fires are synonymous with gathering places, and people are emotionally attached to this ancient ritual, Todd Ketchum, President of Victory Surfaces says. “There is a history of families gathering by the fire,” he adds, citing nostalgia, especially this time of year, when many are excited to hang their stockings by the chimney or burn the traditional Yule log. A home’s hearth room has long been the gathering place, and as homes have evolved over the years many still include a fireplace—usually in a prominent place where people will congregate. If your fireplace is unused because it is underwhelming or out-of-date, perhaps all it needs is a little inspiration to heat things up again. Todd believes the beauty of investing in a fireplace remodel is that it is a relatively simple way to make a dramatic change to the look of your home. “You can change out the façade of your fireplace without doing a lot of other tedious work, like electrical or plumbing that come with kitchen and bathroom remodels,” he says. “We can go right over what is already there with marble, limestone or porcelain without changing a lot of the structure,” Todd goes on, revealing that porcelain, in particular, is very popular right now. This thin material, similar to tile but with the look of stone, doesn’t require a lot of supporting structure underneath—lending itself to taller, grander, statement fireplaces sure to be the focal point of the home. The team at Victory Surfaces also works with architects and builders to design fireplaces for new construction, and has set themselves apart in the industry with their expert knowledge of a wide range of surface materials and construction techniques. “We survey what is wanting to be done and what the possibilities are, whether it is a remodel or new build,” says Todd. “And then we start selecting surfaces.” With a fireplace, a stone or other non-combustible surface is often the best choice, and a visit to the Victory Surface showroom offers a range of possibilities including natural stone and porcelain slabs, carved limestone, ceramic tile, and even concrete.
ABSOLUTELIVING
If your fireplace is unused because it's underwhelming or out-ofdate, it likely just needs a little inspiration to get things heated up again.
ABSOLUTELIVING
Todd encourages homeowners to consider each component of the fireplace, from the hearth (which raises it off the ground), to the firebox and surround (where the fire will sit), to the mantle and legs (which frame the firebox), and the overmantle (the surface above the mantle). Though he recommends that they coordinate, they do not all need to be the same material, and some of the most striking fireplaces incorporate different finishes. Whatever the vision, the designers and technicians at Victory
Surfaces work with each client to ensure it comes to light in the finished product. For more information on fireplace design and remodel services at Victory Surfaces, visit the website at victorysurfaces.com or stop in the showroom, located at 5720 Kopetsky Drive, Suite J, on the south side of Indianapolis.
