Rick Witsken

Ken Herrmann is hooked on pickleball. “I started playing back in 2018 and fell in love with it just like everyone else did,” says the Chicagoan, and he quickly saw a need for there to be a tour for pros, senior pros and amateurs. He didn’t waste any time, organizing the first tour the following year. The Association of Pickleball Professionals (APP) Tour, the official pro-tour partner of USA Pickleball (the governing body of pickleball here in the US), will make its second stop in Indianapolis the first weekend of June.

will be held. “We wanted to showcase Indy as the preeminent spot for Indiana pickleball,” says the Zionsville Middle School tennis coach and founder of Team Witsken, where he provides professional tennis and pickleball instruction. Several of the matches will be live-streamed, with commentary by fellow pro Daniel Roditi, and the weekend will also include a VIP sponsor party.

According to Herrmann, Indianapolis is one of the more popular cities in the circuit, this year the 12th stop on the 32-city tour, which includes tournaments across the United States as well as Spain, France, England and Mexico, offering more than $2 million in prize money. “We’re excited about coming back to the Indianapolis Open,” says Herrmann, adding that the weekend is once again hosted by Rick and Bridget Witsken and promises a lively and welcoming atmosphere with some of the best names in the sport.

“There is so much enthusiasm behind the sport of pickleball,” says Phil Cohn, a senior pro on the tour and Chief Operating Officer at Arnold Meyer Commercial Real Estate, sponsor of the APP Indianapolis Open. Cohn calls pickleball the “tennis of the ‘70s,” explaining that the game is played very much like tennis was played in the 1970s—with a similar touch and feel that you got with the old wooden racquets. “I think there is the possibility of it growing in the same manner that tennis did back then,” he says. “The popularity seems to have that boom now like tennis did back then, complete with colorful personalities and big names who are a lot of fun to be around and a lot of fun to watch.”

Former tennis pro Rick Witsken, who is currently ranked second among men’s senior pickleball pros on the tour, is proud of the facility at Mount Vernon High School in Fortville where the tournament

Mastering Her Craft Chef Kelsey Murphy By Susan Salaz

Last September, Kelsey Murphy stood covered in confetti on the stage of "MasterChef: Legends," winning the 11th season of the popular reality cooking show. She came home to Fishers, Indiana, where her reality actually lies, to her husband, children and a new dream ahead of her. When Kelsey Murphy applied to be a contestant on "MasterChef" persuaded by her father-in-law, she thought nothing would come of it. But she kept getting called back and reaching the next level of eliminations, a trend that would continue once she was eventually cast and filming began. Unlike "Top Chef" or "Hell’s Kitchen" which feature professional chefs, "MasterChef" presents home cooks to its millions of viewers. Kelsey comes from Italian and Polish heritage, two cultures that center around food and family gatherings. She has always been comfortable in the kitchen, but it wasn’t until college that her own individuality and passion for food grew. The self-proclaimed food TV junkie admits that most of her techniques and knowledge comes from a consistent binging of whatever was on the Food Network in college. Cooking became cathartic to her, carrying her through her studies at Indiana University, then Northwestern, where she earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

Being a female in the

kitchen can be tough, and

Chef Kelsey Murphy

says walking in without any actual street cred has been intimidating at times.

Still, she doesn’t

feel the need to prove

herself. Instead, she shows up confident in her food and humble enough to learn from those around her.

“I really try to make

it a collaborative effort

and work together,” she says.

“I hope I can be an

inspiration, especially for other female chefs.”

Over the next ten years, Kelsey got married, started a family, and nurtured her physical therapy career. She held on to her love of cooking, but experimenting became basically non-existent, especially once kids were in the mix. She says it wasn’t until she stepped onto the set of "MasterChef" where she had free reign and complete creativity, in addition to the ridiculously well stocked pantry, that she could shine. “That’s where I really learned that I could actually do this as a career,” says Kelsey. “That’s really what opened the door to what I’m doing now.” It wasn’t easy. In her time on "MasterChef" Kelsey navigated her way through elimination challenges, a set shut-down mid-season due to the global pandemic, an on-air injury, and her third pregnancy. Being away from her family was also difficult. “As a mother, there was such a guilt—we have obligations,” shares Kelsey. “It’s hard to see yourself in another position or with any identity other than being a mom,” adding that there isn’t a lot of time to pursue other passions when the role of mother takes center stage. The time that she was graced with on the show became a revelation.

“I was able to feel purely myself,” she says. Unable to communicate with family and friends, she poured everything into her food, reacquainting herself not only with that passion she always held for cooking, but with her own personality again. Kelsey was happy to reunite with her family during the break, and she returned to the show not only pregnant, but empowered, saying of her motivation, “It wasn’t just for me, but it was for my family and for other moms everywhere.” Kelsey believes it is important for everyone, but for moms especially, to take time to find something that they enjoy. “It makes us such better parents, wives, friends, coworkers, if we are taking care of ourselves and really honoring who we are as individuals.” She insists that the opportunity and all that has come of it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of her husband, Brandon Murphy, who Kelsey says is not only a hard worker, but the best father, husband and friend she could dream of. “To have a partner that allows you to follow your dreams—while putting their own aside—is more than anyone could ever ask for,” she says. “I only hope I can return the favor to him someday.”

ABSOLUTELIVING

Since she’s been home, Kelsey has been putting her own stamp on her new career as a chef. With her winnings, she decided to step away from physical therapy and follow her heart, recently opening Inspo inside Fishers Test Kitchen at The Yard at Fishers District. Here, Kelsey features an inspiring seasonal menu, as well as Sunday Suppers—a rotation of Kelsey’s favorite meals that she serves her own family at home. She calls her culinary style modern American cuisine with roots in the Midwest, often featuring familiar dishes that emerge from a blend of cultures, all with her own unique twist. She doesn’t overpower her dishes or hide behind a bunch of flavor profiles—instead, she highlights ingredients for what they are, especially when it comes to protein and fish. And if you followed her on "MasterChef" you know that elevated plating techniques are her trademark. “I found on the show something that came very naturally to me was to execute beautiful plating styles—it can really take food to the next level,” she says. Now that cooking is her full-time job, Kelsey says she hasn’t found herself watching food television much anymore, but cooking is still cathartic and allows her to relax and recharge. “Getting in the kitchen and prepping is so centering to me. I could chop a billion onions,” she divulges. Running a restaurant, building a brand and being a mom of three young kids is a constant balancing act, but Kelsey manages by taking things one day at a time. “I just take it day by day. If you think too much about it, it becomes daunting,” she laughs. “I just tackle the schedule and prioritize things…but I’m always still mom, wife and friend first.” Connect with Chef Kelsey Murphy online at chefkelseymurphy.com and follow @chefkelseymurphy on Instagram for her latest tasty creations.

Chef Kelsey Murphy, Fishers resident and recent winner of "MasterChef: Legends," says her new culinary career is not only about being true to herself, but also about honoring the fact that she is a mother. “I want to make this whole journey a family affair,” says the mom of three kids that love being in the kitchen with her. “This is an example I’m trying to set for my family, so I want to bring them along every step of the way.”

elebrating a marriage in today’s modern world comes down to one thing: love. There are so many ways to say “I do,” and while some couples hold tight to traditions, others are bending the rules and making the day their own. Whatever path you choose—whether you carry on family and cultural customs, you want to break the mold with an alternative approach, or you’re looking for something in between—we’re here with some of our favorite professional vendors that find joy in tending to the details. Chef Chris Holland, baker and owner of Le Petit Gâteau likes to get to know a couple before he begins designing their cake, so that he can create something sui generis that represents them as newlyweds. “Those are the moments that make me think ‘this is why I do what I do,’” he says. Similarly, permanent makeup artist Katie Reichart says that making people happy makes her happy, which was an unexpected, yet satisfying side effect of her career in the beauty industry. Wedding festivities deserve a personalized touch and an abundance of happiness. Read on for ideas and inspiration to help plan the day of your dreams.

THE RINGS Petite G Jewelers 5609 N. Illinois Street, Indianapolis

Although diamond engagement rings can be traced back to the 15th century, they didn’t become the standard until the 1940s. “Diamonds today are the norm, and we love the sparkle and beauty of them,” says Dana Friedman, owner of Petite G Jewelers in the Meridian-Kessler, Butler-Tarkington neighborhood. When it comes to classic engagement rings, she loves round cut diamonds, but the emerald cut is her personal favorite. Petite G is the city’s premier boutique jewelry shop, offering a fullservice in-house design department for custom bridal jewelry, as well as exquisite estate pieces and a carefully curated selection of designer labels. When it comes to new trends, Friedman notes that alternative center stones, as well as lab-grown diamonds (which are 100% real diamonds, not simulants) are gaining popularity, and vintage jewelry never seems to go out of style. “We have an array of rings dating from the turn-of-the-century Victorian era, 1920s art deco, and 1940s retro styles,” she says. Visit Petite G Jewelers online at petiteg.com and follow @ petitegjewelers on Instagram for “something old” and “something new” jewelry inspiration.

THE MENSWEAR Image by Jordan 3909 E. 82nd Street, Indianapolis

Jordan Stiegman, menswear designer and owner of Image by Jordan, is well suited to help you dress to impress on the big day—whether you are the groom, a groomsman or a guest. Now at a new location in the Clearwater Shoppes, Stiegman is an expert in men’s custom clothing, with more than 30-years experience. Image by Jordan offers special-order tuxedos and suits, as well as custom-made clothing. “You can pick out all the details you would want in your suit or tuxedo— your fabrics, linings, buttons…collar styles, pocket treatments, and even belt loops.” Many grooms still prefer the clean and classy look of a black tuxedo jacket with a white shirt and black bow tie, “but the trendy feel right now we’re seeing is a resurgence of English influence with tweed fabrics,” Stiegman says, adding that forest green fabrics and earthy tones have risen in popularity, especially for outdoor weddings. THE DRESS Ivry Lane Wedding Gown & Tuxedo 30 E. Main Street, Brownsburg (317) 350-2197

The tradition of the white wedding gown has been around for hundreds of years, and it’s one Synthia Nance loves. The owner of Ivry Lane, a small boutique with a big heart in Brownsburg, says the anticipation of the bride and her arrival in the wedding gown gives her chills every time. “Even though the styles may change—the most popular gowns will come and go—forever will be the moment when everyone stands and looks at you, as you glow in your beautiful wedding dress,” she says. While white satin gowns are always at the top of the list when it comes to traditional bridal attire, Synthia notes that intricate patterns, lace, beading detail and even a growing palette of color are all trending when it comes to modern brides. “We like to keep our gowns a beautiful mix of sexy and classic,” she says of the selection at Ivry Lane, which also carries mother-of-the-bride and bridesmaids dresses, as well as suits and tuxedos. Visit ivrylane.com and follow @ivrylanegownandtux on Instagram for your dream dress and one-of-a-kind wedding styles.

THE CAKE Le Petit Gâteau

317-408-5500

Chef Chris Holland, owner of Le Petit Gâteau bakery, looks at every wedding cake he creates as a work of art. Baking entirely from scratch, with only the best and ethically sourced ingredients, Chef Chris is not only a passionate baker, but he also holds a fine arts degree and continues to take classes to refine the creative skills necessary for making showstopper wedding cakes. Chef Chris holds a philosophy that just as every couple has their own dynamics, so should the cake. “I like to get to know a couple first, and—if they’re willing—I can design a one-of-akind cake unique to them,” he says. He’s happy to step outside of the box when it comes to sweet treats for the celebration, adding “We are a full-service bakery and I’m a trained chef as well, so we have the ability to create dessert bars and pastries.” The team at Le Petit Gâteau currently works out of Carmel’s Kitchen, as shared commercial cooking space, and you can find their baked goods at Fishers Farmers Market, Caffé Buondí, and other local coffeeshops.
