aul Plummer has had a passion for physical fitness his entire life. A certified athletic trainer since 1989, he has worked at the collegiate level and is a member of the Indiana Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame. When it comes to fitness, Plummer is quick to acknowledge that one size does not fit all. When he opened PXP Endurance in 2015, he knew it would not be a cookie cutter fitness center, and the motto, "Your Goals, Your Success," was no accident. “I want to know what your goals are,” he says, adding that goals tend to build upon one another—running a mile becomes a 5K, then a half marathon, and sometimes even longer endurance events.

Plummer relies on his background in sports medicine, along with his personal experience as an Ironman athlete and coach, to help each of his clients find value in their accomplishments—whether they are running a mile for the first time or finishing an Ironman. “Whatever your goal is, I want to help you figure out the right path to accomplish that goal safely and successfully,” he says.

PXP Endurance offers a wide range of services and programs tailored specifically to each client’s needs and desires, including rehabilitation, strength training, coaching, nutrition and testing.

After identifying a goal, the best place to begin, according to Plummer, is with a functional movement screen to help evaluate how efficiently the body moves.

From here he can assess risk factors and offer guidance and maintenance plans. Once the body is moving well, he will add in strength and flexibility training, along with fitness components such as running, biking and swimming.

His clients come in all ages, sizes and skill levels. At PXP, adolescents are welcomed and taught proper form and technique, which is important to prevent injury and bad habits from settling in, and to improve overall performance.

Adults come to begin or rebuild fitness levels, as well as to rehabilitate and prevent injury. In addition to optimizing form and function, Plummer can also help manage the mental side of training, by educating his clients on strategies for perseverance and offering support and encouragement at events outside of the gym.

Plummer, who lives in Carmel, believes this is a great area to cultivate a lifestyle that involves fitness, and loves the abundance of running and biking routes the city provides. He often offers weekend runs and rides along the trails to help PXP members learn and practice as a group. He says that giving back to community is also an important part of his business model, and in addition to supporting clients, PXP Endurance supports local, fitness-minded charities such as Back on My Feet and Freewheelin each quarter.

When Paul Braun and his wife, Heather, purchased Purse Strings in 2018, it wasn't simply about owning a boutique. It was an investment in family.

aul and Heather Braun of Fishers have a blended family—think Brady Bunch— with three children each. Paul grew up in Indianapolis, and was the youngest of 12 kids (a distinction he shares with a twin sister).

He attended college in Evansville and later moved to Orange County, California. “As I matured, I realized the importance of family and the core values here in Indiana,” explains Paul, who describes his extended family as “close knit” with many nieces and nephews.

“To me, it was important for my kids to know their cousins,” he adds. Once home, however, he still found himself away on the road much of the time for his job as a sales representative and national sales manager.

The days away, the missed events with his wife and kids, and the “good night, sleep tight” routine took a toll, and Paul was ready for a new way of life. When Purse Strings, once a Vera Bradley store, became available, Paul saw an opportunity. Not only did he have a relationship with the retiring owners, but he also had an extensive knowledge of specialty stores from his experience as a sales manager. This allowed him to expand upon Purse Strings prior success. Most importantly though, he saw the store as a way to break free from life on the road, allowing him precious time with Heather and his family. Paul explains, “From a personal standpoint, it was important to me to be home with my kids, and not be on the road parenting from a hotel room.”

Since taking the reins three-years ago, in a bumpy time for brick-and-mortar retail, Purse Strings has significantly grown, expanding beyond the original store at Clay Terrace in Carmel to a second location in the Fashion Mall at Keystone at the Crossing in 2019, and most recently to Hamilton Town Center in Noblesville, which opened this past April. Paul’s savvy sense of what is trending, his insight into what his customers want and need, and his top-notch selection of quality goods have all aided the store’s success.

As the name implies, Purse Strings still maintains an unmatched selection of high-quality handbags, with favorite labels like Hammitt, Hobo, BedStu and Consuela. While handbags remain a large part of the equation, Purse Strings also carries men’s and women’s fashion accessories, housewares and home décor, baby items and gifts at every price point. In a time when shopping small is gaining momentum, they are committed to sourcing impressive local brands for their customers. “If we can find a quality Indiana brand our goal is to support them,” says Paul.

He still keeps the ever-popular Vera Bradley merchandise from Fort Wayne in stock, and also carries Peepers Reading Glasses, a fourth-generation eyewear company based in Michigan City. Their blue light blockers even have Oprah’s endorsement. Natural fragrances from Ambre Blends, based in Indianapolis, are one of the most popular lines at Purse Strings, and newly added local handbag company DD Bird, from Carmel, is stealing the show with their stylish and functional travel and tote bags inspired by organization.

Paul also stocks repurposed library books by Re-Issue Books, made in Westfield, which make a fun gift for book lovers. Anyone who enjoys an ice-cold beverage can stock up on BrüMate triple insulated drinkware by Greenwood native and Purdue graduate Dylan Jacob, offering can and bottle coolers, winesulator gift sets, and much more.

The original Purse Strings in Clay Terrace has long been a popular destination for handbags and gifts. When Paul Braun took the reins in 2018 he took the shopping experience to a new level, expanding the range of products to include not only handbags, but also men’s and women’s accessories, home décor and gifts at every price point. As he grew the inventory, the store also grew a loyal following, and has since opened two additional locations in the Fashion Mall and at Hamilton Town Center.

One of the biggest additions Paul has implemented is a robust men’s selection. “The anchor of my men’s department is Duke Cannon, which is a men’s grooming line,” says Paul. The high quality supplies such as soaps, shaving creams and after shaves, along with beard balms and deodorant, are all American made, and come with the added bonus of quirky guy humor.

Strong and sturdy Groove Life belts are also available, as well as backpacks, computer bags, shaving kits and wallets, all with men in mind.

Purse Strings is a great destination for graduation, anniversary or birthday gifts, and has many options for baby and wedding showers beyond necessities and registries. For Paul and Heather, Purse Strings is a family affair, and several of their kids have worked at the store, both behind the counter and behind the scenes. They are gracious hosts of multiple philanthropic shopping events to raise money for local charities and, thanks to Heather’s youngest son who has special needs, they have become active supporters of Down Syndrome Indiana. When they aren’t obsessing over the latest trend in jewelry or handbags, you can find them out on their boat or playing with their tribe and three dogs for an evening outside by the fire pit.

CONVIVIO ITALIAN ARTISAN CUISINE

The specialty menu at Convivio features fresh pasta made in-house each day and a love of Italian food, life and culture.

n Italian, convivio means “living together as a way of sharing an experience together.” Co-owners Andrea Melani and Emilio Cento strive to share an authentic and welcoming Italian experience with their guests at Convivio, with locations in Carmel and Zionsville. While the menu is centered around the many types of fresh pasta they hand make daily, it is inspired by a passion for authentic Italian recipes and techniques and is focused on quality. It includes a curated selection of antipasti appetizers, bruschetti and pizzas, along with featured dishes that change seasonally, highlighting the cuisine of a specific region in Italy.

Currently, the flavors of Emilia-Romagna, located in northern Italy and famous for Parmigiano Reggiano, are in the spotlight. In addition to Old and New World wines, they offer a robust selection of Italian wines with an eye-catching menu—instead of listing wines by the varietal, the Italian wines are showcased on a map of the country and categorized regionally so guests can see where they originate.

Melani, who grew up on the northwest coast of Italy, finds excitement in the traditional flavors and innovative options at Convivio, but believes there is something to be said for simplicity. One of his favorite dishes on the menu is the Caprese salad, made with heirloom tomatoes in a variety of colors.

“Many Italian restaurants have a Caprese,” he says, “But ours is really special.”

hile many are preparing to return back to the office full time this summer, others are choosing to stay home and make a home office space that works for them. Investing in a comfortable and efficient home office environment will make your work life easier and more productive, and the trained design professionals at Houseworks can help create an efficient and beautiful home office by maximizing the space available, be it an entire dedicated room or just a portion of one.

ability to have the right height while sitting, and having your shoulders rest comfortably is a great thing,” McIntosh claims, adding that it takes a lot of the tension out of your neck and upper back.

If your office will be a shared space, Houseworks has some lovely pieces of multitasking furniture from a slim console table that doubles as a small desk with a keyboard drawer, to a file cabinet masquerading as a credenza perfect for any living room or bedroom. Wherever your home office fits in, McIntosh suggests making the space your own with some personal touches such as artwork, funky accessories and family photos in unique frames. Even brightly colored desk light can showcase your personality. While comfort is key to any office, a home office can tend to get too casual, especially in a family home. “I think the key to a successful home office is putting away your the work at the end of the day,” says McIntosh. “Especially if it is not a room that is dedicated as a home office. That way your work day is over and you are not looking at work items when you are with your family.”

When thinking through your home office, McIntosh recommends starting with a comfortable, ergonomic chair. “If you are going to invest in upgrading your home office, do not skimp on the office chair. It should have multiple adjustments including seat depth and height,” he says. “It should also have adjustable arm height and the back of the chair should have adjustable lumbar support for your back.” Houseworks offers several options that integrate well into any environment. Proper task lighting is also important to consider.

McIntosh prefers a dimmable light that is adjustable, so that you can angle it in different directions, and notes LED task lights can help prevent eye strain.

A lifting desk can be a worthy splurge. Not only is it healthy to stand occasionally throughout the day, but having desk height options while seated is a great benefit. McIntosh notes that the average fixed desk height is about 30-inches high, but that doesn't necessarily work for all people, especially those on the shorter or taller ends of the chart. “Having the
