HAPPY BLUE YEAR By Susan Salaz

Cold weather got you down? Don’t just try to beat the blues this winter. Instead, embrace the changing seasons and find longlasting benefits.

W

inter has long played a part in deepened depression, lethargy and moodiness, and if there was ever a year for the blues, this is definitely the one. The days are short, the skies are gray, and the luster of the holiday season is fading fast, leaving many with a feeling of loneliness. This year, these feelings are exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic and need to remain physically distant with many of our friends and loved ones for a while longer.

ABSOLUTELIVING

It is true that Mother Nature can impact our own natural rhythms, and in the winter when she is gloomy and bitter, well, we tend to feel that way too. But just as the sun continues to rise a bit earlier each morning and set a bit later each evening, there is light at the end of the tunnel and there are plenty of ways to enjoy all of the beauty winter has to offer. We’ve got just what you need to brighten up those blues and put a little spring in your step while waiting out the winter. First things first: get outside. The easiest, most effective way to boost your mood is to get some fresh air. Winter is a great time to watch the sunrise since it happens later in the morning, so bundle up and enjoy your morning coffee al fresco with a beautiful view. If you’re bored of your scenery, check out one of the local nature parks like Cool Creek Park or Ritchey Woods for some instant ecotherapy. For a seismic shift: move your body more. This time of year can leave us fraught with fatigue, but you can fight through that feeling and up your energy level by moving more. Go for a walk or a jog (or hike at the nature park), and remember, distance and speed don’t matter as much as just moving. You can stretch it out with an at-home hot yoga session by the fire, or have a predinner dance party while your roast is in the oven. However you move, make it fun and a good fit for your lifestyle. When you need a lift: change your mindset. The start of a fresh new year is a wonderful time to reflect on your beliefs and your blessings. Practice gratitude by keeping a journal, writing thank you notes or paying acts of kindness forward. Cultivating gratitude can have long lasting impacts on our souls and our psyche.

ABSOLUTELIVING

If you only do one thing: stay motivated. It is critical to celebrate your wins, even the small ones right now. Resolutions don’t need to be big and lofty this year, but encourage yourself to do something you enjoy like reading a new book or picking up an old hobby. Set goals and reward yourself for reaching them. And remember, it’s almost spring. While many people only feel fringe effects of the winter blues, some do suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD. While this can be managed on your own, don’t put off seeking professional advice regarding any symptoms you may be experiencing this winter.

ABSOLUTELIVING

The first time I stepped into DeBrand Fine Chocolates in the Shops at River Crossing I was smitten. There is so much to love about chocolate, but there is a certain wow-factor about this prominent shop—with the white marble counters and sparkling atmosphere, with the generous welcome and impeccable service, and of course, with the smell of cocoa and coffee and rows of gorgeous chocolates inside the long glass case greeting each guest upon arrival. The elegance and ambiance, not to mention the delicious chocolates, had me head over heels. Lori Sonner, who owns the Indianapolis DeBrand location with her husband Bill—in a partnership with founder Cathy Brand-Beere and her husband Tim—remembers DeBrand stealing her heart, too. It was nearly 20 years ago, on a trip near Fort Wayne, Indiana for a family wedding. The weekend included a ladies afternoon at the original DeBrand store, and like the artful designs and extraordinary flavors in a box of their signature truffles, she couldn’t get it off her mind. Although Lori admits to being a chocolate lover, she wasn’t just taken by the chocolates, but enchanted with the entire affair. She loved the warm and welcoming, upscale experience.

a polite "no" (we all know most good romance stories don’t come that easily), and life went on for the Sonners. Lori, with a knack for sales, built a successful Pampered Chef business, and Bill, a pharmacist by trade, has maintained a long career with Walgreens in various business and pharmaceutical roles. Together they raised their daughter Hannah, eventually relocating to the north side of Indianapolis several years ago. Here they saw the potential for a niche culinary destination and rekindled their curiosity in opening a DeBrand store.

Many think that working with their spouse would be a rocky road, but Bill and Lori Sonner (married 27 years), along with their partners in Fort Wayne, Tim and Cathy Brand-Beere (married 32 years), have found that the rewards of sharing

The original love story of DeBrand actually began decades earlier, when Cathy Brand-Beere was just a child growing up in a small family business that sold cake-decorating supplies. “At a very young age I fell in love with creating things,” explains Cathy. “Of all the culinary arts to which I was exposed, the clear winner for me was chocolate!” She says she loves the taste of course, but her passion is the creativity that comes through working with chocolate. After making candy and wedding cakes through her school years, she decided to truly commit to her love of chocolate full-time, and in 1987 DeBrand was born. Over the years, Cathy, along with her husband Tim and their three daughters, cultivated the company into something sweet, and customers like Lori have been gushing over it ever since.

Despite unrequited feelings the first time around, the Sonners decided to pursue the opportunity again in light of their new circumstances and surroundings. With serendipitous timing and a true devotion to the company, Lori and Bill were invited on as partners in the new Indianapolis DeBrand location in 2017. “We are honored to have partners in Indianapolis who are also passionate about DeBrand and who take such good care of the chocolates, the store and the wonderful customers,” says Cathy. “We love that Bill and Lori truly take pride in the brand.”

After that first visit many years ago, Lori and Bill flirted with the idea of opening their own shop, and even contacted Cathy to see if she was interested in franchising. The answer was

The feelings are definitely mutual. The Sonners love the chocolate of course, as well as the relationships they have created with their customers and the detailed culture Cathy

and Tim have established within the DeBrand business. In a year full of challenges, the company’s business model adapted well to the many pandemic–induced restrictions. “We were able to do curbside pickup effectively and really exceeded our expectations last year,” says Bill. And they got creative too, with Lori hosting Zoom meetings for groups so that her customers could still connect and “share” a box of chocolates in group and corporate events. “We go through the flavors and the processes—it’s a lot of fun,” she says. Last fall, they were also given the opportunity to take on their own mail order side, which has also been a success, especially during the pandemic. Being able to provide shipping on-site has afforded DeBrand Indy the ability to be more versatile and well-suited to support those wanting to share the DeBrand experience with loved ones and business associates all over the country. I can attest to the splendor of receiving a box from DeBrand in the mail. Last fall, my kids brought in an unexpected package they found on the porch, so excited to see what was inside. I recognized the signature scrawled across the top and knew we were in for a treat. They tore open the cardboard, and carefully packaged inside was a chocolate covered caramel apple as big as my three-yearold’s head. This seasonal specialty was a huge, delicious, sticky delight, and I would like to tell you it lasted for days, but we devoured it that night. In December another box arrived, and this one I quickly hid away before my children discovered its contents—12 artful truffles, each more delicious than the last. I have been thumbing through the catalogue and following DeBrand’s Instagram feed ever since in search of the perfect treats for all of my loved ones this Valentine’s Day. These tasteful creations are meant for sharing, and as they say at DeBrand, it’s the one gift you know they’ll love. Lori and Bill Sonner have lived a life infused with the sweet and savory sides of love. Navigating their shop through such a wild year, especially for small businesses, has reminded them of all the reasons they fell in love with DeBrand so many years ago, and has them excited for what lies ahead.

Tips for Managing High Cholesterol We’ve all heard the terms "good” and “bad” applied to that waxy substance in our blood vessels we call cholesterol. But why does cholesterol seem to have a split personality? And more importantly, what can we do to accentuate the positive and eliminate, or at least drive down, the negative?

H

igh cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke, but it typically shows no symptoms. Understanding the role cholesterol plays, its potential risk factors, and how to manage it are vitally important to our health. LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein), or “bad” cholesterol, contributes to fat build-up in the arteries. HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein), or “good” cholesterol, on the other hand, can carry LDL cholesterol away from the arteries to be broken down and passed from the body. LDL cholesterol level is important to monitor. An optimal level is less than 100 for otherwise healthy people, according to the American Heart Association, which recommends adults age 20 or older should have their cholesterol and other risk factors checked every 4-6 years by their primary care physician with a simple blood test. Cholesterol management is not one-size-fitsall, however. Those who have already experienced a heart attack or stroke, or have a family history of high cholesterol, may need to have their cholesterol levels and risk factors checked more often and may need to make lifestyle changes or take prescribed medication to help manage cholesterol levels.

ABSOLUTELIVING

Make informed decisions about managing your cholesterol levels and overall health with these tips from the American Heart Association’s “Check. Change. Control. Cholesterol” program, nationally supported by Amgen:

Assess your risk. Your health care professional can help determine your risk for a cardiovascular event like heart attack or stroke and help manage your cholesterol as one aspect of preventive care. Your medical and family history and your lifestyle provide important clues about your risk level. Risk is elevated for people who have had a heart attack or stroke; blockages in the arteries of the heart, neck or legs; chronic inflammatory disease; kidney disease; or other medical concerns. Your health care professional will also consider your age, sex, whether you have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and if you smoke. Your diet, physical activity levels, alcohol intake and any drugs or supplements you’ve been taking factor into your risk level, as well.

Eat a heart-healthy diet. From a dietary standpoint, one of the best ways to lower your cholesterol is to avoid foods with saturated fat and trans fat. Limit saturated fat to 5-6% of your daily calories and avoid trans fat, which means limiting intake of processed or fatty meats and full-fat dairy products. Choose low-fat dairy products and lean proteins instead. A heart-healthy diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, whole grains, lean vegetable or animal proteins and fish, while limiting things like trans fats, sodium, processed meats, refined carbohydrates and sugary foods and beverages. Eating this way may also help increase your fiber intake, which can help lower cholesterol levels by as much as 10%.

ABSOLUTELIVING

Be physically active. A sedentary lifestyle lowers HDL cholesterol. Just 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic exercise a week is enough to help lower both LDL cholesterol and high blood pressure. Consider mixing up the options to keep your exercise routine engaging and prevent boredom. Try activities like brisk walking, swimming, bicycling or dancing.

Lose weight. Being overweight or obese tends to raise LDL cholesterol and lower HDL cholesterol. A weight loss of as little as 10% can help improve your cholesterol numbers.

Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. Smoking lowers HDL cholesterol. What’s more, when a person with unhealthy cholesterol levels also smokes, his or her risk of coronary heart disease increases more than it would otherwise. Smoking also compounds other risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. By quitting, smokers can lower their cholesterol levels and help protect their arteries. Nonsmokers should avoid exposure to secondhand smoke as much as possible. Find more resources and tools to help manage your heart health and cholesterol at heart.org.

Color Trends Stacy Thompson

The New Year always brings about trends in color for the home, but the importance of color for 2021 seems to have even more meaning. After navigating 2020, our homes have become sanctuaries and safe havens. While color always has played a significant psychological role in our environments, we are more aware of the effect that it can have on our physical and mental health, after our collective experience. Everyone views color differently, so finding the right mix for your home is important, as your palette reflects your wants, needs, and personality.

Vibrant and Saturated

As an interior designer, I have seen what is on the horizon for color in 2021, and I think it makes sense for where we are as a society. Vibrant and saturated colors have been making a resurgence, but they are really coming in hot for this year. Rich, deep colors have a way of communicating warmth that can be a total mood changer. Dark blues, rich reds, bold greens, and even sunny yellows are making their way into homes, even if it is in furniture selections, fabrics, or accents. Homeowners want to bring in their favorite hues to tell their story and create a retreat that is undoubtedly a reflection of them. Finding feel-good joy is what we are all striving for, and color can help to reinvigorate our spirits.

ABSOLUTELIVING

Tones of Nature

Going along with the tones of comfort of rich blues and greens, browns in all tones, from sand to chocolate, are coming into interiors, bringing a natural warmth. Soft, serene greens are a big player in the color forecast for this year, bringing the outside into our homes. Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year is Aegean Teal 2136-40, which is a deeply soothing green-blue that evokes nature, while also promoting comfort. Retreating into natural colors has a calming and inspiring force that is needed to reset and reflect.

Neutral Mood

Neutrals aren’t going away—they are here to stay—but they have changed from the cooler to the softer, slightly muddy color ways. Warm whites, like Benjamin Moore Simply White are still a favorite to balance out the darker moody tones in adjacent rooms. Olive, eggplant, adobe, warm gray-browns, and chalky blues have made their way into the new aesthetic of 2021. They are the softer side of the more vibrant tones, and perhaps easier to incorporate for those who might be a little color-phobic. Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year Urbane Bronze SW7048 is a deep, dark hue with a cozy, cocoon-like feel and a perfect balance with the warm white tones. Warmth and safety are reflected in the neutrals that are at the forefront this year.

ABSOLUTELIVING

Whatever colors you choose to inject into your home, they should make you feel comfortable, as our homes are where we feel safe, where we make memories, and where are life unfolds. I am known for bringing color into my clients’ homes that personally connects to them. I mix in pattern, with fabrics, wall treatments, and furniture that speaks to a well-designed space that is uniquely theirs. I earned a Bachelor’s in Interior Design and have completed countless renovations and interiors projects throughout my 18 years in this industry. I am well-versed in the construction and design process and how the meaning of color can be transformative. Live colorfully!
