GOAL SETTING FOR 2021 By Kim Goletz | Photography By Peter Jonathan Images

M

any of us are looking forward to 2021, and with good reason. If you’ve had a tough year and have lost focus on your health, your fitness, or have gained the “quarantine 15,” you might be looking forward to a fresh start after the holidays. If your goal in 2021 is weight loss, fitness or nutrition related, there are a few questions you should ask yourself, especially if you are looking for help in this arena.

ABSOLUTELIVING

How is your mindset? Your mindset is a HUGE part in making a change and sticking to it. If you don't have the right mindset, it’s going to be difficult to "stick to the program." Define the purpose—why are you making this change? There will always be something that comes up, or an excuse to get out of it. Your purpose needs to be stronger than your excuses. Falling in love with the process, instead of focusing only on results, also leads to long term success. If you start to enjoy eating healthy, feeling good and exercising, it makes it much easier to stick with. If you only do it for the results, once you get to your goal and you stop eating heathy and exercising, it will just come back. What goals have you set for yourself? If your goal is to lose weight, a healthy goal for weight loss is only 1-3 pounds per week. If you have less to lose, this will be even slower. Be wary of setting an unsafe or unrealistic goal for yourself. If you are incorporating exercise, the results on the scale may not reflect the changes you will be seeing in your body. You may be losing fat and gaining muscle, which will not result in a huge drop on the scale. I encourage people not only to focus on a certain weight loss goal, but to focus more on feeling better, sleeping better, how their clothes fit, their before-andafter pictures, and improving their health. It can be very frustrating to set a goal and not be able to reach it, so if the goal is unrealistic or unattainable, you will always be frustrated and feel like a failure. It’s no wonder so many people give up on themselves. The key is setting realistic, attainable goals. Setting smaller, attainable goals frequently can increase your success in reaching your goals. As you meet each goal, you set a new one, which puts you in constant, positive, and forward momentum.

No matter what your goal may be, it should be: • Written down • Specific or measurable • Deadline-driven • Realistic • Inspiring Instead of saying, "I want to lose weight," "I’m going to eat healthy," or “I want to lose 20 pounds in 2 weeks,” set a realistic and specific goal with a deadline. For instance: "I want to exercise at least 2 times per week for 4 weeks," or, "I’m going to eat a serving of vegetables for every lunch and dinner for a week." What steps will you be taking to help you reach your goals? If you’re looking to lose weight or improve your body composition, it's important to find a program or plan that isn't severely restrictive and allows you

ABSOLUTELIVING

to gradually work this into your life as a lifestyle, not a quick-fix (all-or-nothing) program. Ask yourself… Are you going to be doing too much too suddenly? Are you going to put too much pressure on yourself? If you choose a technique or something that is the complete opposite of what you are doing now, or something that is severely restrictive, it might be too much all at once. If you’re looking for help, you should look for a program or technique that is attainable for you. You should also look for something that teaches you how to maintain this lifestyle long-term, instead of looking for something you think will be easy, or a quick fix. People frequently look for set meal plans so they “don’t have to think.” If you have a set meal plan, you won't learn how to make the right choices on your own. So, when the plan is over, or if you're not in your controlled environment, you

won't know what to do. In addition, if a program depends on pre-made meals or shakes, you won’t learn how to make the right choices with food. Another thing to consider is whether you’ll be able to buy these products indefinitely to maintain these results. These techniques are some of the things that lead to “yo-yo dieting” because they only work in the short term and cannot be maintained. A lot of people have the “all-or-nothing” mentality. They choose a severely restrictive or aggressive plan to achieve a very aggressive goal. Starting these diets that promise drastic results in a short amount of time most likely utilize strategies that are severely restrictive and are impossible to maintain long term. Another problem falls with starting a workout “challenge” that requires you to exercise intensely every single day. If your body is not ready for this level of workouts, it can lead to injury. This amount of exercise is also difficult to continue over the long term. When it comes to weight loss or improving your health in 2021, be sure you are in the right mindset to put forth the effort; that you set realistic, attainable goals for yourself; and that you choose a plan that you can maintain over the long-term. Focus on smaller goals and implementing healthier habits in your routine. Setting smaller goals and achieving them routinely will give your attitude and spirit a boost and will leave you wanting more! There is always room for self-improvement! For help with an online, customized nutrition plan with workouts and daily support and accountability, check out The Refine YOU Program at www.refineyou.co, run by nutritionist, trainer and physician assistant Kim Goletz. The program will meet you at your level and address your needs. It is a jump start to a lifestyle change and the goal is to ultimately help you be the Healthiest YOU Possible, Mind, Body, and Spirit.

An Ace in Real Estate GINNY PURDY AND F.C. TUCKER COMPANY

By Susan Salaz | Photography By Gabrielle Cheikh Noel | Artwork By Eduardo Peña

For over 100 years, the F.C. Tucker Company, Inc., has been an iconic name in the Indiana real estate landscape, shaping the city of Indianapolis and surrounding communities. President Jim Litten and one of his top agents, Ginny Purdy, talk teamwork, dedication and how a background in athletics has helped them score big on the home field. Ginny Purdy has been a committed real estate agent with the F.C. Tucker Company in Indianapolis for more than 25 years. Before that she was a teenage tennis prodigy, working her way onto the Women’s Pro Tour and playing Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, the French Open and many others at only 16 years old. Ginny grew up at the Indianapolis Racquet Club. At age 11, she was 2nd in the nation and remained a top junior throughout her amateur career. As a 9th grader at Northview Middle School, she won the singles state championship individually and as a team for North Central High School, but elected to go forward on the professional tennis circuit rather than continue at the high school level. In 1983, local tennis legend Barbara Wynne was able to schedule the Ginny of Indianapolis tournament, part of the Virginia Slims Women’s Professional Tour, here in town. Purdy admits that sharing her first name with the tournament itself was a funny coincidence. “I was fortunate enough to be given a wild card and made it to the finals. That allowed me to play the next two stops on the Virginia Slims Circuit—Chicago and Pittsburgh.” Winning the Ginny of Pittsburgh catapulted her tennis career, and she came on the women’s professional tennis circuit at 109th in the world.

Ginny attended the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy (now IMG Academy) in Florida during her junior year of high school, playing professional tennis tournaments but keeping her amateur status. She achieved a ranking as high as 52nd in the world. She returned home to finish her senior year at North Central while still touring, and even missed her graduation ceremony because she was playing in the French Open. She accepted a tennis scholarship to the University of Southern California. “I chose USC because they had one of the top collegiate tennis programs in the US, with a great coach and teammates.” When she returned home after college, Ginny’s father encouraged her to go into real estate, knowing her work ethic and well-known name would take her far. She wasn’t sold on the idea at first, but decided to give it a shot, starting at the F.C. Tucker Company’s Keystone at the Crossing office in 1995. She was one of the top rookie sellers that year and continues to work at that office today. She credits much of her real estate achievements on pounding the pavement and putting in the time and discipline, just as she did on the tennis court. “I definitely think being a competitive pro athlete has helped me in this field. I learned discipline, drive, patience and adaptability first from tennis. Those skills are incredibly useful in real life, and in real estate too.” Purdy explains that it is all about muscle memory: Whether it’s hitting hundreds of tennis balls or making hundreds of follow-up calls, it all comes down to consistency.  Ginny is focused and genuine. She is always looking out for the best interest of her clients and provides excellent service. Jim Litten, owner and CEO of the F.C. Tucker Company agrees, adding that integrity is important in every level of the company. “We are an organization that is built on people with character, and those with character will have guaranteed success because they treat people right and believe in the golden rule,” he says.

Ginny Purdy is an invaluable part of the team at the F.C. Tucker Company, according to owner and CEO Jim Litten. “I have known Ginny for 30 years and she is the real deal. The discipline she had as an athlete has turned into a discipline in her career, where she is constantly bettering herself. She is full of energy, enthusiastic and always positive, which all play into her success.”

ABSOLUTELIVING

Northside native Ginny Purdy currently lives in Carmel, and although she doesn’t play tennis as much as she used to, she is still well known at the Indianapolis Racquet Club and gives lessons on occasion. She loves to run and spend time with her daughter, who is 14 and prefers basketball to tennis.

Before Litten was in real estate, he, too, was an athlete, attending Ohio University on a football scholarship. He studied education and aspired to be a football coach before serving in the Vietnam War. Just as Purdy uses techniques from her tennis days to achieve business goals, Litten uses his coaching ability to help guide a team of over 1,500 agents to success. “I want to give them every opportunity to be successful. We have created systems at every level—from marketing to training to IT—so that they can thrive in their business.”  This strategy has been built from the ground up, as you can see on 86th street, where an all-new, state-of-the-art office is under construction, soon to replace the current Keystone at the Crossing digs. Purdy and her Keystone colleagues are excited for move-in day. “Our Keystone office is one of the highest producing offices in the company and we have always loved the location. We are thrilled to be able to expand and stay in this high-profile location.” The F.C. Tucker Company has deep roots in Indiana tradition, and is the oldest and largest independently owned real estate firm in the state. Litten started as an agent in 1972. “I was new to Indianapolis and didn’t have a following here. There were only 500 people living in Fishers then, there were no homes on Geist Reservoir yet, and Carmel was just starting to be developed.”  Litten rose to the challenges, and purchased the company with Fred C. Tucker III and David Goodrich in 1986. Tucker and Goodrich have since retired, but Litten continues to march down the field, a driving force behind diversifying the company. “We went from being a brokerage firm to now offering a full range of real estate services.” The F.C. Tucker Company currently operates a title service, mortgage and insurance divisions, relocation services, home warranty products, an auction company and even a real estate school.” In short, Litten wants to offer a seamless and enjoyable process for buyers, sellers and agents alike. He doesn’t plan on slowing down any time soon, adding, “I enjoy every minute of it and still look forward to going to work every day.” Just as Ginny sought out a great tennis coach at USC, she has found another amazing leader in Jim Litten. This year has been full of surprises, but the housing market has seen incredible success and the F.C. Tucker is on track to have the biggest year in its history. If you are considering buying or selling, now is a great time and Ginny Purdy can help you with all of your real estate needs. Whether you are looking for a resale home or condominium, considering new construction or a lot to build your dream home on, or want to purchase an out-of-state property, Ginny shows up at her best every time—game, set, match. To reach Ginny Purdy you can contact her at 317-345-LIST (5478) or gpurdy@talktotucker.com

Fast forward to 2020 and Ball Dentistry is still in the family, owned by Cecil’s grandson and his wife, Drs. Craig and Andrea Ball. This year, Ball Dentistry relocated the Northside office, moving right across the street and managing to combine a new, state-of-the-art office and equipment with their steadfast, patient centered, family oriented, feels like home vibe. “The fact that it is a third generation family business is never lost on us,” says Dr. Andrea Ball, adding that every decision for growth or expansion is made with that vision statement in mind. While Gary decided early on he would follow in his father’s footsteps, Craig was not so sure. “Like most kids, I always envisioned myself as an astronaut

or a doctor.” But he grew up seeing his father and grandfather help many people through dentistry, and he enjoyed working with his hands. Craig was also drawn to the opportunity to carry on the family business, and soon realized dentistry allowed him to utilize all his skills and passions. Craig met his wife Andrea at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Andrea became interested in dentistry early, as the result of extensive dental work as a child. She currently combines her passion for facial esthetics with her dentistry practice. “What I’m able to do for a person’s smile and confidence through dentistry and esthetic treatments like Botox and dermal fillers is amazing to me.” Ball Dentistry provides a wide array of services and many skilled associates. “We are highly invested in technology, patient satisfaction, and a conservative treatment philosophy,” says Craig. (317) 781-1133 Franciscanhealth.org Catherine Reese, MD loves helping her patients recover from sports related injuries and lead an active lifestyle. At the Franciscan Cityway Family and Sports Medicine office in Carmel, she spends time with her patients in order to dial into the true cause of their injury, in addition to treating the injury itself. “One of the biggest challenges in Sports Medicine is telling someone they need to stop their favorite activity. I try not to do that often, but sometimes it is necessary to rest in order to heal,” Reese explains, adding that her main goal is getting her patients active again and back to all of the activities they enjoy. Dr. Reese wanted to be a doctor for as long as she can remember, following her mother’s footsteps in the medical field. “My mom is a family medicine physician and I have always admired her,” she says. Dr. Reese went into Sports Medicine because, as a collegiate athlete, she herself sustained frequent injuries and saw the benefits of the specialty she now calls a career. Dr. Reese enjoys her job because she gets to talk about some of her favorite things all day: running, yoga and sports. Outside of the office, she loves spending time with her husband and two sweet kids, especially in the great outdoors, where they can often be found biking, camping and hiking.

• Healthy Habit: I get a workout in every morning before work. • Guilty Pleasure: My favorite guilty pleasure is to take a long bike ride to get some nachos and craft beer. • 2021 Pro Tip: Add in some exercise! An active lifestyle is actually more important for your body than weight loss. Your minimum activity goal should be 150 minutes per week, in at least 10-minute sessions. As a joint reconstruction specialist and orthopedic surgeon with Franciscan Health, Dr. Feher wants to help change lives for the better. “I love seeing patients regain their joy of life, after being so miserable with arthritis for so long.” Feher focuses on revision hip and knee replacement, and credits his partners and pioneers in the field for the much advancement in joint replacement surgery over the past decade, making the challenges minimal today. A 5th grade dissection peaked Dr. Feher’s interest in the medical field, and he considered a career in athletic training, but was driven to orthopedic surgery when he noticed overwhelming patient success in the field. “I saw how great patients did after surgery, and that drove me to become an expert hip and knee surgeon.” Dr. Feher has a patient-centered philosophy in his practice, always making sure that his patients and their caregivers have what they need to make recovery easy and comfortable. Communication and understanding expectations are essential parts of the process, and Dr. Feher is grateful to work with such an experienced team that also values the importance of these aspects. When he isn’t at the office or in the operating room, Dr. Feher is often found courtside at a practice or sporting event for one of his three children, who are involved in all kinds of athletics. After spending so much time at home this year, now is a great time to appreciate your space and think about how you can make it truly your own. I began my career in 2008 as an interior architect and designer—melding the jobs I saw growing up as the daughter of an architect and an interior designer. I started Whittney Parkinson Design almost five years ago in order to focus solely on projects I truly aligned with, and this year I made another leap, concentrating my efforts on residential design and working closely with families to achieve the home of their dreams. My style is transitional at heart, balancing modern and traditional elements. I look beyond trends to create ageless homes that will reflect my clients and their families for years to come. Whether you are ready to build a new home, remodel an existing one, or just imagine what your forever home might look like, here are a few design ideas you can take with you into 2021.

"A simple trick that quickly enhances any room is fresh greenery--instantly adding a sense of life!"

MAKE IT PERSONAL: Your home is your sanctuary and a reflection of who you are. I get to know my clients so that I can specify unique, quality items and accessories that reflect their one-of-a-kind personalities and reveal their personal style. Bookshelves not only add height, but they also allow you a place to display accessories that tell your story. Artwork is another effective solution to beautify a space and add a focal point. I encourage finding a work of art that is meaningful to you. Another simple trick that quickly enhances any room is fresh greenery—instantly adding a sense of life. I love adding a natural element by bringing in a few snipped branches from nature—the larger in scale, the more dramatic.

LOVE THE LIGHTING: Ambient lighting is so important and can make an immediate difference. I can’t tell you how many spaces I walk into with only a ceiling fixture. An easy way to start is by adding floor lamps and table lamps, giving off warm light at eye level. When you’re ready, you can add wall sconces or recessed lighting, which is a great way to highlight artwork. This underestimated design layer will instantly take a space from sterile to cozy.

EMBRACE COLOR: There is a seismic shift in color trends right now, and after nearly a decade on the cooler end of the color scale we are happily embracing warmer tones again. While cool colors may make an area look brighter and bigger, warm tones are intimate and inviting. Paint will forever and always be the least expensive way to transform a space, and it’s a fantastic way to enhance your home, but it is not the only way to add color. Think about adding color with artwork, textiles, cabinetry and even woven furniture.

ABSOLUTELIVING

KEEP IT CLASSIC: Classic pieces help make a space last forever. Chasing trends can become tiresome, and we are figuring out collectively how disposable trends can be. Vintage and antique furniture, whether in a traditional setting or contrasted in a transitional style, aren’t going anywhere any time soon.
