he Premier Group provides a Luxury Electronic Lifestyle that coordinates everyday routines into complete, brilliant experiences. A common misnomer for homeowners considering smart home technology for their new or existing home is that it will be too difficult to understand. However, good design and programming actually takes the hassle and guessing game out of the equation when it comes to your home technology. “We find that once we are able to meet with a customer and educate them by demonstrating the technology in our showroom at the Indiana Design Center, they leave realizing that smart home technology actually simplifies their life in all of the areas that they touch on a daily basis, including entertainment, lighting and shades, security, climate control, and more. -Jason Barth, CEO The Premier Group

By Jamie Sangar, Director of Business Development, The Premier Group

Premier collaborated with Gary Nance (architectural Designer) and Brandy Ketterer (Interior Designer) to create a sleek and seamless whole-home technology package.

Scenes If you think about your morning routine, there is probably a lot of consistency in the chronological order that you do things. You likely get out of bed, turn on a light switch that leads to your master bathroom before you head to the kitchen to start your morning cup of coffee. You’ll also need to turn on more light switches, possibly your TV for the morning news, as well as raise your window shades and increase your thermostat to a more comfortable setting. With smart home technology, all of those steps can be programmed into one simple command called “Morning” available from a simple keypad, touch panel, mobile device, or voice control (“Alexa, turn on ‘Morning’”). Security Monitoring As we approach a time that you might soon be traveling to a favorite Fall vacation spot, “Vacation” mode in a home automation program may not only provide the peace of mind knowing your home is secured, but varied lighting scenes

Our interior and exterior lighting design enhances the home's architectural features, all while being automated around the homeowners' lifestyle throughout the day can offer the appearance that someone is home and can also increase efficiency with your climate control. “Our clients enjoy having remote access to their smart home technology while on vacation. For some, it allows them to grant access to their pet sitter that may be entering and exiting the home, or to monitor their security cameras and adjust their thermostat from their mobile device.” -Jason Barth, CEO The Premier Group Climate Control A common bedtime routine is to turn the home’s temperature down at night, and raise it again in the morning. This is often true during the work week while you’re away at the office, or returning home in the evening. Smart home technology can be tailored around your schedule and your typical pattern on any given day of the week. This not only eliminates one step out of your daily routine, but it also helps to decrease your carbon footprint. For an opportunity to operate and experience smart home technology firsthand, setup a private consultation with The Premier Group in their showroom inside the Indiana Design Center. www.premier-group.com

"My body has

changed so much inside and out," Gary says. "Looking better isn't what this is about, but feeling better and living a longer, healthier life is the goal."

DESIGNING His

LIFE GARY NANCE By Justin Guild | Photography By Eduardo PeĂąa | Artwork By Roger PeĂąa

Gary Nance has spent more than 30 years perfecting the architectural design of residential properties across the country. The namesake of his Carmel based company, Gary Nance Design, he now finds himself with a perfected body design of his own creation as a "Masters Bodybuild 60+," a moniker well-earned at the recent 2018 NPC Indiana State Championship show for bodybuilding. The competition, Dave Bowers Productions, was last month. Earning first place in his age division and second place statewide, it's taken Gary two years to reach this personal accomplishment that has contributed to greater professional success for him and his clients. Even though highly successful and accomplished in his career, his journey toward transformation began at his son's, Nick, wedding in Jamaica after seeing how big he was in photos of himself and his family. "I was completely out of shape, overweight at 292 pounds with a 52 inch waste," Gary says. "I couldn't believe I was that big. I was experiencing internal issues, and almost put on insulin. I needed a drastic change in lifestyle." And so his journey began. Gary set course on a rigorous fitness program. He had to start slowly at first with only about 15 minutes a day. Even with a personal trainer, and after six months, no results were apparent. Only after this initial hurdle did he find some changes. "Most would quit," Gary says. "But I'm doing it for my family. I had a good group behind me."

19

His initial training started with Ben Raichel. After he left to pursue other business opportunities, Connor Houston took his place and the journey went into high gear. At one point, Connor suggested a direction towards bodybuilding to get into ultimate shape. A friend of Gary's introduced him to Joe Mordecki, a bodybuilder, trainer and nutritionist. They helped coordinate efforts towards achieving Gary's goal of bodybuilding.

sometimes to use their microwave for particular meals. Simply pulling into a fast food drive through wasn't an option anymore.

"What started as a casual conversation on an upcoming body building competition eventually became "why not enter one? You've already come this far,"" Gary says.

Whatever challenges he faced, Gary had the support of multiple communities behind him every step of the way. For example, at the championship bodybuilding show last month, his daughter, Taylor, helped to organize 50 clients, friends, and other family members together to throw a huge party for Gary to help root him on. Another community he highly depended on was the group of fellow body builders he developed strong friendships with.

Soon after, Gary became more diligent in his workouts. With the help of his trainers and nutritionist, for five days a week, and no more than one hour a day, he started to transform into a bodybuilder. Gary also joined LA Fitness in Carmel close to his home and office. Then James Kraus, a trainer joined the Nance team to help him get ready

"Dieting is very strict," Gary says. "No carbs, rice, root vegetables, bread or alcohol. My meals were prepped for me which made it tremendously easy as I had to eat every two hours. The mood swings can be hard. Frankly, I didn't know I had that much discipline in me."

"Body builders might look unapproachable but they are some

Trainers are helpful because the average person doesn't have the expertise on weight training or know all the guidelines, rules, or nutrition facts on their own." The diet to this process is equally impressive. On his meal program, Gary states sometimes he had to pull over at a convenience store

of the nicest most humble people I've ever met," Gary says. Despite the grueling workouts and limited diet, Gary's efforts ultimately yielded significant rewards personally and professionally. throughout his career. Gary notes his designs are not just exterior property but interior as well including light fixtures, floorplans, fireplaces, and interior trims.

like for a working professional and aspiring bodybuilder? For Gary, it's quite simple: he works out before or after work, but usually it's later in the day. "I like to get to the office early," Gary says. "You have to get a lot done, it increases efficiency and productivity." And Gary has certainly been productive. As the owner of Gary Nance Design, a residential and commercial architectural design firm, his modern approaches to interior and exterior design has earned him numerous awards and accolades

Hailing from Indianapolis, Gary went to school at Ball State University and the Harrington Institute. His first job out of college was at Murphy/Jahn in Chicago where he worked for 12 years honing his knowledge, skills and abilities in design. But the passion started early. "I knew from grade school I wanted to be in this business but being dyslexic, I had an extremely difficult time in school. I knew I had to work twice as hard and that gave me the work ethic I have today," Gary says. "From playing with building blocks, to sketching houses and drawing floor plans in second grade, it's inherent in my blood."

ABS O LUT E L IV IN GM AGAZ IN E .COM

Also, he speaks at Camp Delafield for the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana every year to show kids that being dyslexic doesn't have to hold you back. "It's a great program that I wish was around when I was growing up." His recent bodybuilding stint is just another chapter to his success that bolsters his business. According to Gary, "this lifestyle change gives me more energy in my job. I can go to industry and builder shows without being winded or exhausted." In addition, Gary has started the Gary Nance Collection, which offers custom light fixtures, hardware and stair spindles. The collection recently debuted at the High Point Market in North Carolina.

Sushi on the Rise:

Naked Tchopstix By Justin Guild | Photograpy By Jes Nijjer | Artwork By Eduardo Peña

Sushi restaurants in the Midwest haven’t always received their fair shake. Indiana in particular, obviously not a coastal state where sushi is a revered delicacy, is usually perceived as meat and potatoes territory. However, at Naked Tchopstix (365 W. 116th St., Carmel), with a dish named the “Playboy” on the menu, how can you possibly go wrong? The Playboy, a customer favorite according to owner David Lee, is a sushi roll consisting of shrimp, tempura, asparagus, spicy tuna mix, and three specialty sauces. The roll is wrapped in tin foil, set on fire, allowing the smoked flavor and smell then to emanate from the ingredients for a pleasing dining experience. “It’s our most popular thing on the menu, so much so other establishments have tried to copy it,”says David with a chuckle. In the two months the Naked Tchopstix Carmel location has opened, David has attempted to expand offerings for their expected customer base where one doesn’t have to stop with the Playboy for something unique. Additional plans include branching out to a variety of upscale product such as steamed prawn shrimp, Iceland halibut, snow crab, lobster sushi, jumbo sea scallop and Hawaiian opah. “We’re expecting a lot of lunch people from the surrounding offices and hospitals from 86th to 146th street,” David says. “This area, it’s at a higher end level. We’re trying to do something different.”

ABS O LUT E L IV IN GM AGAZ IN E .COM

27

The 116th street Naked Tchopstix location is one of four in David’s restaurant portfolio. Another recently opened northside location is at 2902 W. 86th St. in the Willow Lake West plaza. Here, the focus is on sushi, including the Hawaiian style known as poke. The poke concept is where customers pick their own sushi/meat/ fish then pick their own sides like vegetables or fruit. A third location at 3855 E. 96th St. offers sushi and Chinese, Thai, Korean and Japanese cuisine. Finally, a fourth

28

location is in Fort Wayne. David originally hails from South Korea, with a short stint through Columbus, Ohio. He came to the U.S. as a college student at Ohio State University as a philosophy major. Soon after, he relocated to Indianapolis. While dining at Union Station in the 1990s one day, he was approached by a restaurant owner who inquired as to whether he would like to buy his Cheeseburger In Paradise franchise. Having never worked in the restaurant business, David

ABS O LUT E L IV IN GM AGAZ IN E .COM

was hesitant at first, but he eventually put up the $50,000 in capital needed. “I didn’t realize what I had gotten myself into,” David says. “I had to learn the basics of a restaurant and the industry in two weeks.” For example, the buying and maintenance of inventory were top skills to learn. Soon after, David found his footing. He bought and sold a variety of restaurants in subsequent years. One of the first after Cheeseburger in Paradise was a Ginza

Steakhouse on W. 38th St. He bought this in part from being teased by close friends. “My friends joked that I didn’t own any Asian businesses, I only owned American businesses,”David says. “So I needed to go into what I did know.” He also bought and owned a Philadelphia Steak and Fries and a convenience store. Eventually he sold the steakhouse which led him to the Tchopstix concept. “Sushi

is

easy

me,”

David says with laughter. “I’m from South Korea.” Tchopstix gets its unusual name from Russian influence. David says he was inspired to adopt the “T” in chopstix from “Tchaikovsky.” “This way, no one can imitate our name. It’s one of a kind. The pronunciation is the same, and people don’t seem to mind,” David says. The Tchopstix concept dates back to 2002, when Lee opened a Bistro Tchopstix at 251 N. Illinois St. in

downtown Indianapolis. Broad Ripple became the first restaurant to carry the Naked Tchopstix name when it opened a year later. It was sold this year. David says he never had any intention of staying in Indiana. With three northside restaurants, he’s happiest when his customers are happy. “New sushi will hopefully bring new customers,” he says. “That’s is always good. If there is demand for high quality fish I will be happy.”

When asked about how seafood and sushi fares in a place like the Midwest, David ponders for a moment before smiling once again. “Sushi is still new to Indiana. It takes time. My father in South Korea ate nothing but soup and fish his entire life. When hamburgers and other Western food were introduced to our country, it took time to adjust. The younger generation in Indiana likes sushi. I’m so happy to see that they have an open mind for food. If you want a long life, eat more sushi.”

Aside from the massive display, it might look like just a regular fridge, but this new model is all about convenience and fun – two things that are usually amiss in most kitchens. The biggest addition to this year’s family hub is Bixby, which operates a lot like it does on, say, the Samsung Galaxy S8. But this particular twist on Bixby is tuned to know what’s inside of your fridge and, uniquely, is able to whip together recipes based on the food that you have. BEOSOUND SHAPE - Wall–

mounted wireless speaker system.

SAMSUNG FAMILY HUB REFRIGERATOR – The smart chef you didn’t know you needed. The Samsung Family Hub 3.0 refrigerator is even smarter than the previous model, packing in Bixby smarts and powerful AKG audio to make your time in and out of the kitchen more enjoyable.

Beyond the style, versatility and noise dampers for improved room acoustics, there’s now another reason to love the Beosound Shape. This customizable wireless speaker system will support AirPlay 2 via BeoSound Core. So whether you want to have a multiroom, wireless audio playback experience from Apple Music or other apps, you can easily control your music through

different Apple mobile- and home devices. TOTO FLOATING TUB – The world’s first zero-gravity bathtub. High-end Toto Flotation Tub employs a series of jets to create the sensation of zero gravity in which bathers experience total weightlessness. LED lights along the bottommake the entire tub appear as if it’s floating. In addition to taking a load off, the jets also provide a quiet massage for your back and feet. This tub is not for small apartments; it’s about twice the size of a regular tub. NOKIA SLEEP – Sleep tracking device. Nokia Sleep is one of the best products this year for a great night’s sleep. Simply place the sensor under the mattress and you can expect it to carry out all the functions such as recording and tracking your sleep cycles, heart rate, sleep quality plus snoring patterns, and syncing everything back to the device’s health app. The tracker also doubles as a home automation device. This means: You can create the perfect sleeping and waking up environment by having it control all your smart items—lights off and blinds down when you get in bed; coffee maker on when you get up.

PUMPKIN

BEAUTY

IT’S PUMPKIN SEASON! AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES, CARVED PUMPKINS AND BASICALLY PUMPKIN-INFUSED EVERYTHING!

Pumpkin has some serious benefits when applied externally to skin. The big orange gourd has naturally occurring AHAs—alpha hydroxy acids—which helps to promote increased cellular turnover, along with the antioxidants vitamin A and vitamin C that both help with free radical damageandcollagen production. So not only are dead skin cells removed, but they're also replaced with younger cells for a literal anti-aging effect. Whether listed as "pumpkin ferment" or "pumpkin extract" on the ingredient label, they both help to shed dead skin cells while breaking down proteins into useful amino acids, which plumps the complexion for that lit-from-within look. Then there are products, which are spiked with pumpkinseed oil—a different part of the squash—that provides different skin benefits. While both pumpkinseed oil and pumpkin fermenthave environmentally protective antioxidants, the former isloaded with emollients including omega 3- and 6- fatty acids for serious hydration. So it should be no surprise that the beauty industry's gotten in on the PSL craze, offering a slew of new products for fall featuring everyone's favorite autumn flavor—or derivative of, at least. Get ready to smear some pumpkin on your body with these 5 beauty products!
