Strong Immunity for Healthier Living

By Kim Goletz

The recent pandemic has highlighted how important it is for our bodies to be able to fight infection. In addition to proper hand washing, social distancing and sanitization of your surroundings, there are steps that you can take to improve your immune system. Following these few steps can improve your immunity and improve your overall health. Eat Healthy Foods Nutrition is the most important factor when it comes to your health. The food that you eat is your body’s fuel, helping your body to run and function optimally. If you do not fuel your body with the proper nutrients, it will not run efficiently and effectively. If you fuel your body with unhealthy, processed foods, your body cannot run optimally. Foods like chips, soda and most snacks contain calories, but these calories are what we call “empty calories.” This means that the calories you are eating are made up of minimal vitamins and nutrients. In addition to avoiding processed foods, avoid drinking alcohol regularly. Too much alcohol consumption can weaken your immune system and put you at higher risk of getting sick.

Healthy foods-full of vitamins, minerals and nutrients-are just what the body needs to work properly and boost your immunity.

On the other hand, if you eat healthy foods that are “nutrient dense” or “nutritious,” they are full of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. These foods are just what the body needs to work properly and are good for your immune system. Foods that contain beta-carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin D and Zinc are good foods to boost your immunity.

Exercise and Maintain a Healthy Weight Maintaining a healthy weight directly correlates to your health and your immunity. There is no question that obesity leads to an increased risk of disease and infection. Exercising regularly has huge health benefits that protect you against heart disease, high blood pressure and osteoporosis, and it can also boost your immune system.

Exercise also benefits your mind and spirit by providing an endorphin rush and the satisfaction that you have done something good for yourself. Exercise can help relieve stress, help you feel more relaxed, and boost your mood. Improve How You Deal with Stress When you are under stress, your body releases stress hormones, which can suppress your immune system. While you cannot control what happens, you can improve how you deal with stress. You can lean on your support network (friends and family), see a counselor, talk to your doctor, exercise, participate in a gratitude program, meditate, and create a yoga practice.

Get Enough Sleep Sleep plays a huge role in your health and happiness. During sleep, your body repairs and restores itself. If you do not get enough sleep, you put your body in more stress, which can affect your immune function. Be sure you are getting enough sleep every night. Everyone needs a different amount of sleep, but most studies indicate that most people need about 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Be honest with yourself and try to get the sleep that your body needs every night. Taking care of yourself directly impacts your immunity. If you live a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious foods, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, maintaining a low stress level and getting enough sleep, you will have a healthier immune system and improve your ability to fight illness and disease. If you need guidance on how to implement these strategies in your life, contact your physician, or find a well-trained individual to help you. The Refine YOU Program, run by physician assistant, nutritionist and personal trainer Kim Goletz, offers customized nutrition and workout plans to fit your lifestyle to help you reach your health and fitness goals and to be the healthiest YOU possible!

TRIPhase Technologies, with Robert and Shanna Haecker

The Internet of Things (IoT) industry is an overwhelming place. But you can sit back and relax, because Robert and Shanna Haecker of TRIPhase Technologies know how to make it easy.

ABSOLUTELIVING

T

he new Zionsville showroom says it all, with room after room of new and newer home technology tempting all the senses. Luxurious home theatres with advanced audio and video capabilities (complete with candy counters and popcorn carts), smart desks and bars with secret compartments, speakers masquerading as works of art (such as an Ente SoundTile for your Sonos® system), layered lighting schemes that can change to fit whatever mood you’re in…this is the forefront of home intelligence, and it’s right here in the Midwest. Some of it seems straight out of science fiction, but everything in the showroom is available in real life. The name TRIPhase, however, did come from the 1990’s science fiction movie, Extreme Measures, starring Gene Hackman. A coincidence perhaps, but it stuck and still fits, Shanna says, noting the three phases of a TRIPhase system installation: pre-wire, trim out and final programming. Robert wrote his business plan for TRIPhase while attending Ball State’s nationally ranked entrepreneurship program. Shanna, also a Ball State graduate, has been helping him steer the ship since before they were married, and they have been in this business for 25 years (literally in the business, sharing a home with their first showroom in the beginning). TRIPhase has evolved, adapting and integrating with the ever-shifting tech trends. But while Robert and Shanna are nimble amidst change, their commitment to quality and to their customers remains constant. “It’s been a wonderful ride,” Shanna exclaims. “It’s about the people, it’s about the industry, it’s about the technology and the way that people can live through their homes with what we offer that makes it so rewarding.” Today, TRIPhase offers comprehensive solutions for home automation and security. While their niche is high-end residential properties, they work commercially as well, creating spaces such as corporate boardrooms and recording studios. They have a robust list of offerings, beginning with consultation and project specification, all the way through design, engineering, programming and implementation. Their services include security and surveillance, video solutions, whole home audio, lighting and shades, as well as full maintenance and support. In addition, they now also

specialize in interior design for technology spaces. TRIPhase does it all, which makes the process really easy. They can build-to-suit turn key spaces, or are happy to accommodate scalable, phased approaches, ideal when remodeling older homes. The Haeckers both get excited about new technology, but they agree that none of it really matters unless it fits the clients’ lifestyle. They want to build relationships with their customers so that they understand their needs. They emphasize that every family and lifestyle is different—some have kids, some have pets, some work from home. The end goal in every home, though, is to simplify life and reduce home energy costs.

The new state-of-the-art design center and showroom beautifully demonstrate how new tech can apply to each customer’s ideal home and layout. This is the place to see, hear, touch and experience exclusive products for indoor and outdoor entertainment that aren’t found anywhere else. Robert and Shanna are excited to share the new space with clients from all over the country. An extension of industry alliances, the TRIPhase showroom is an exciting endeavor, synergizing the relationships and expertise of many vendors and builders. Robert expands on this, adding, “Our approach is to unify the process and not complicate people's lives. Each system is customized to enhance the enjoyment of your home life. It’s easy to use and it’s consistent.” And it’s fun, too. With the touch of a button, Robert is able to demonstrate different aptly named lighting scenes in the showroom. Good morning shines with the shades open and sunlight streaming in; layers of light from wall sconces and overhead chandelier, along with ceiling inserts, create a romantic mood known as "Entertaining;" and "Good Night" softly glows as the main lights dim, making space for corner reading lights and pools of low light that mark walking paths. And he's just getting started. Other settings can cue

Robert and Shanna are passionate about tech, but also love the great outdoors. Lake Wawasee is their happy place— where they met as kids, where they got married, and now where they enjoy vacationing with their son. Weaving tech integrations into outdoor areas is hot this summer, especially with many people staying home more. The Haeckers enjoy their outdoor entertainment system which includes automated bug screens, outdoor music and television, landscape lighting and WiFi. Shanna says solar shades are popular right now, too, and clients are already asking about outdoor heaters, hoping to extend the outdoor living season into the autumn months.

responsible for making the systems work every single time, so we want to install products that we know are reliable and that we can predict.”

In the same way Robert and Shanna work towards relationships with their clients, the TRIPhase teams have also built important relationships with architects, builders, designers, trade partners and vendors. And just as they educate their clients, the Haeckers and TRIPhase employees educate themselves as well. Staying on top of a fast-paced industry like technology requires a lot of effort, and TRIPhase keeps on the cutting edge by attending boot camps and trade shows to be in the know. The sales and engineering teams make sure that they are fully aware of new trends and tech coming out soon, so that they can ask questions and be a part of the engineering process along the way.

TRIPhase Technologies has grown from a handful of team members to over 50 employees in its 20+ years of business. “We realize we are in people’s most personal spaces, so we do everything we can and really focus on hiring the right people,” says Robert. Their employees range from field technicians to engineers to programmers. There is a dedicated service team, sales team and design team, lighting and shade technicians, as well as security, office and human resource personnel. To Robert and Shanna, the IoT is interesting and exciting, but they are proud of how their business has grown into a family. “If we are good at one thing,” avows Shanna, “it’s the ability to pick great people. The loyalty and longevity from our employees is so valuable, and with them in our corner there is nothing we can’t overcome.”

“We like to be on the cutting edge, but not the bleeding edge,” jokes Robert. He says the best way to make this distinction is to test all of the products—to know that they work and how to work them. They have a company policy that anything installed in a client’s home must be fully tested first, sometimes in house, and other times in their own home or an employee’s home. “We are

VERDE FLAVORS OF MEXICO

ABSOLUTELIVING

Summer is heating up, and Verde Flavors of Mexico Ironworks is on fire! No passport needed to transport all of your senses to authentic Mexico at this dynamic venue. Re-establish the connections, and flavors, you’ve been craving on the lush patio, an extension of the vibrant, artistic design of the indoor dining room. The ambiance is great, but the food is what sets Verde apart. The fresh Shrimp Ceviche, traditional Molcajete salsa, and tantalizing Grilled Octopus should be on everyone’s “must try” list this summer, and the tacos are perfection anytime (and only $2 on Wednesdays). Soothe your spirits with spirits (half-price drink specials happen Monday, Tuesday and Thursday every week), and sail away on the seamless music spun by local DJs on the weekends for your listening pleasure. Four-legged friends are always welcome on the patio. Restaurants have changed recently, but Verde says they love the new vibe—guests are living in the moment and engaged in their dining experience. Verde’s mission has always been to bring family and friends together, but “this is really inspiring,” says owner Paul Aréchiga, adding that customers choosing to meet here (or at the other Verde locations in Fishers and Carmel) after months of isolation is the restaurant’s highest compliment.

SUN KING 135 N College Ave, Indianapolis | 9713 District North Drive, Fishers | 351 Monon Blvd, Carmel

Sun King steps it up again at its newest location in the Fishers District. Small batch beers and shared space with Fishers Test Kitchen adds another level of awesome to the Sun King Indy has come to know and love, and the view from the top just keeps getting better. The second level patio looks out over The Yard, with a bird’s eye view of Fishers District. You can’t go wrong with standards like Osiris and Wee Mac, but this summer’s favorite beer is the recently added Orange Vanilla Sunlight Cream Ale, perfect for hot days. Hot nights, though, call for a Pachangarita, a frisky take on a frozen beer-margarita. Be sure to stop in on Growler Fill Fridays for $6 growler specials. Adjacent to the taproom, guests can choose from Lil Dumplings Global Street Food, Korave Korean BBQ, or Southern comfort food from Natural State Provision at the Fishers Test Kitchen. Then belly up, and grab a favorite Sun King pint, spirit or other libation to go along with it.  Don’t forget to check out the authentic Indiana mural on the side of the building, by artist Dan Toro. Dogs are welcome on the downstairs patio, leashed of course, and family friendly picnic tables throughout make any day seem like a Sunday Funday.

ach Bazbeaux’s location is as whimsical as the French court jester and culinary artist it was named for, and none are too far off the Monon (other locations in Broad Ripple and on Mass Ave). The Bazbeaux in Carmel is situated right along the bustling trail, offering guests a great way to stroll or bike in for the fabulous pizza Indy has been craving since the ‘80s, and it’s the perfect place to people watch. You can bring your pup, too. The Pizza Alla Quattro Formaggio has long been the favorite, with four cheeses, mushrooms, and bacon, and no flavors are left behind. Specialty pies range from the Genova with eggplant, mushroom, fresh tomato and goat cheese, the Neptune with crab, shrimp, snow peas and olives, or the Tchoupitoulas (pronounced CHOP-ah-too-lus) with andouille sausage, roasted red pepper, Cajun shrimp and fresh garlic. There are plenty of other options, too, along with house made salads, sandwiches, and more. Stop in early in the week for beer specials, $3 pints and $2 domestic bottles on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. You might have a short wait on Wednesday, halfpriced wine night, but a little extra time in the Arts District is worth it. Bazbeaux delivers a delightful experience, and of course, they deliver delicious pizza to your door if you aren’t ready to go out just yet.

f you aren’t traveling just yet, the Keltner family and Diane Cannon have brought the flavors and ambiance of quaint Southern towns like Savannah and Charleston right here to central Indiana. Nestled in a historic bungalow in downtown Carmel, walk, drive or bike over to Juniper on Main for bold, authentic flavors of the South. A relaxing meal on the porch, surrounded by fresh flowers and a kitchen garden, can be a minivacation without even leaving the Arts District. This special space is charming any time, but the evening hours glow with twinkle lights strung from the pergola, with music and soulful aromas drifting though. The mouthwatering menu features intriguing fare like Crab Rangoon Tacos served with sweet chili sauce, a fresh twist on classic low-country crab cakes. The Moon River Burger—two smash patties smothered with a must- have melody of flavors —is a summer staple. And Dueling Shrimp and Grits, offered Savannah Style (with a Coca-Cola barbecue) or Charleston Style (with cream sherry and a fried egg) are forever the house favorite, and use only heirloom grits flown in from a small-batch farm on Edisto Island. Juniper on Main gives impeccable attention to every detail, in their food, their atmosphere and their service. Dogs are welcome on the porch, and they’ll even provide fresh water bowls.

Arni's River Ridge 4705 East 96th Street, Indianapolis

Generations of families have been gathering at Indiana's 18 Arni's locations since their first location opened in Lafayette back in 1965.

Arni’s River Ridge location has been an important fixture on the north side of Indianapolis for more than three decades. This summer, plenty of long overdue meet-ups are happening outside under the new pergola—the freshly landscaped patio is fast becoming a popular spot to finally catch up with friends. Relax in the sun or under the shade of an umbrella, have a beer or hand-shaken cocktail from the bar, and know the staff at Arni’s will treat you like family and do everything possible to keep you safe during your visit. Several new dishes debut this month: Buffalo Cauliflower Bites, Cauliflower Wings, and some new twists on pasta enhance the menu, which, like the legendary Loaded Cheese Fries, is hefty. Arni’s is famous for their thin crust pizza and iconic Junior Salad, but offers something for everyone, from tacos to burgers to subs. Generations of families have been gathering at Arni’s over the years, enjoying the pizza that put this restaurant on the map (there are 18 Arni’s currently on the Indiana map). But Arni’s isn’t just about delicious food and reliable service, it’s about the community. “We are able to maintain high quality service and amazing food by taking care of our people—restaurant employees and customers alike,” says Kurt Cohen, whose father, Arni Cohen, opened the original Lafayette location in 1965, and was inducted into the Pizza Hall of Fame several years ago.

Matteo's Ristorante Italiano 40 N. East 9th Street, Noblesville

Matteo's offers guests an intimate outdoor scene, the perfect setting for a summer soirée.

Disney’s The Lady and the Tramp might have made eating Italian food in an alleyway romantic, but Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano, on the Historic Noblesville Square, makes it a reality (dogs welcome, too, of course). Wrapped in heirloom brick and opening to a gorgeous view of the courthouse, the alley at Matteo’s is a hidden gem, offering guests an intimate outdoor scene with plenty of room to spread out, making it the perfect setting for a summer soirée.

Since 2003, Matteo’s kitchen has been crafting handmade specials each day, along with classic favorites like Tortellini Matteo’s, a homemade cheese-filled pasta dish finished with a creamy alfredo, packed with mushrooms, onion and ham. Fresh salads, antipasti and a variety of meat lasagnas that rotate daily are worth keeping Matteo’s in your restaurant lineup, and the fun summer cocktail menu doesn’t hurt either.
