Sizzling Summer Hair Summer time is full of events, concerts, and cookouts. Here are a few tips to keep your tresses fresh for those summer days. There are some golden rules every Indiana gal should live by in the summer. Protect your hair from the sun, use

product for the humidity, make your hair like a sponge, and find a cute Ponytail that makes you feel sassy! 1.Protect, Protect, Protect. You need to protect your hair color from the sun, so it doesn’t fade, get brassy, or cause damage! Wearing a hat is always a good idea, but a product with UV protection is a necessity. Try using Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion. It has natural UV protection, and will keep the longevity of your style! 2.USE PRODUCT! The humidity is no joke and can ruin that beautiful blowout. To help fight the frizz try using an anti-humectant. (Kevin Murphy Smooth Again is the perfect product to smooth out frizzy hair) 3.Make your hair like a Sponge- The whole idea behind this analogy is that when a sponge is wet it soaks up less water, so before you hop into

10

ABS O LUT E L IV IN GM AGAZ IN E .COM

the pool... wet down your hair! It fills up the "sponge" and allows for less chlorine to soak into your hair. 4.Ponytail Perfection- Don’t be afraid on those hot and humid days to throw your hair in a high ponytail, throw on some fun earrings and a bright lip, and rock it!

Summer Skin Care Essentials Tips

and tricks for your best summer skin yet!

Are you bothered by dark patches and discoloration on your face? These symptoms may be melasma, a condition that affects more than five million Americans— particularly women. Melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation triggered by hormones and exacerbated by UV rays and environmental heat common to summer. In fact, even brief but unprotected sun exposure can reactivate suppressed pigmentation to surface. Hormonal fluctuation, thyroid conditions and certain medications can further stimulate this unwelcome skin ailment. KURR offers a variety of professional skin care services and medicalgrade products to help prevent and reverse the appearance of melasma. I'd also recommend considering the use of retinoids and sunscreen. After a recent conversation with Jan Marini of Jan Marini Skin Research, she shared

with me the misconception that consumers should refrain from using retinoids throughout the summer. Jan believes that year-round application can aid in the overall health of skin. Applying sunscreen is also key for optimal skin health — it is the best preventative treatment for anti-aging by blocking harmful UVA and UVB rays. With consistent use, a quality sunscreen formula will help prevent extrinsic aging: collagen loss, the development of sun spots and wrinkles, and transepidermal water loss (dryness). I suggest layering a physical 30 SPF or higher with a tinted sunscreen such as Revisions Intellishade®. Or try Sunforgettable®, one of my favorite brush-on sunscreens by Colorescience® . Love a healthy summer glow? Try two must-haves that are loved by KURR clients: Tea to Tan and Cellularose Brightening CC Lumi Serum,

both by By Terry. Tea to Tan is a revolutionary bronzing mist for the face and body with a universal shade that suits all skin tones. Cellularose Brightening CC Lumi Serum provides an instant boost in radiance with a subtle veil of light-reflective pearl pigments that blur imperfections and even tone skin. The journey to achieving a lifetime of healthy skin is a commitment. Experience a fusion of luxurious and clinical at KURR, where we artfully blend a relaxing experience with the care, expertise and results you would expect from a physician's office. Ready, Set, Summer Summerize your makeup routine to stay chic in the heat. Ride the summer waves with the appearance of effortless beauty. When switching up your makeup products for the season, keep your color in mind. Most of us have considerably different skin tones in the summer and that winter foundation will make you looked washed out. A tinted moisturizer is a great light-weight option that still provides coverage. Choose a base with physical sunscreen which provides chemical- free broad spectrum coverage. Using a heavy foundation in the heat will make you look cakey and will slide all over your face. Take the time to prime. A lightweight primer provides a smooth canvas for your foundation to glide on and adhere to. Summer is the perfect season to play up your makeup palette.

Liven your lipstick or brighten your blush just as you would add a pop of color in your Summer wardrobe. Adding color will always make an impact A beautiful shimmery sheen looks fabulous on the body as well. Try brushing on highlighter to the collarbones, shoulders, and legs. Achieve the bronzed and sun kissed look without the harmful rays by using a self tanner. (My personal favorite is Tantasia by Jane Iredale). Keep eye makeup simple yet mesmerizing with a luminous shadow, a little eyeliner smudged directly into the lash line, and play up your lashes with two coats of water proof mascara. Create mega lashes by

Experiment with a vivid hue in one area of your face.

12

wiggling the mascara wand as you apply and show lots of love to the outer corner lashes. This technique wings out the lashes, giving a beautiful lift. Use an eye primer to keep your eye makeup from migrating and your shadows crease- free. Brush up your eyebrows and use a brow gel to keep them in place. This gives a natural brow look, while creating a flattering shape. We never want to look pulled down, always think up! Complete your makeup with a setting spray which keeps your look locked in for hours and feels incredibly refreshing.

Fly with a Drone

Iceland Drone photography is giving a photographer a new perspective on the landscape and nature. To be able to fly closer to the mountains, up narrow canyons, over craters, down waterfalls and more is a great way of seeing the landscape and nature of Iceland. Iceland is spectacular in so many ways and Icelandic nature is quite unique with its vast landscape, volcanic activity, geothermal areas, glacier lagoons and sceneries, black sand beaches and spectacular mountain ridges. The country's most recognizable series of attractions though are maybe the endless number of waterfalls making Iceland quite unique. Earth and water. Dragons and Sprites hunters. Do you know that Iceland has the highest number of dragon slayers in the world? True story, check in their phonebook. It’s not hard to believe in elves and dragons in landscapes like these. Imagination starts to work on a different level, and you feel like a small child facing this impressive, overwhelming nature. On the pictures, you can see all those favorite spots known from Game of Thrones, Prometheus, Fast&Furious, etc. Filmmakers love Iceland, like everybody. That's why it's quite hard to feel its mightiness alone. Our advice is to go off the path and entirely before tourist season, in winter or early spring.

The Nation Iceland has a market economy with relatively low taxes, compared to other OECD countries. It maintains a Nordic social welfare system that provides universal health care and tertiary education for its citizens. Iceland ranks high in economic, political, and social stability and equality. In 2016, it was listed as the 9th most developed country in the world by the United Nations' Human Development Index, and it ranks first on the GPI (Global Peace Index). Iceland operates almost completely on renewable energy. Water Cure Every Icelandic town, no matter how small, has its own pool. There are ramshackle cement rectangles squatting under rain clouds in the sheep-strewn boonies. These public pools, or sundlaugs, serve as the communal heart of Iceland, sacred places whose affordability and ubiquity are viewed as a kind of civil right. Families and teenagers and older people lounge and chat in sundlaugs every day, summer or winter.

Mentoring TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE By Justin Guild | Photography By Eduardo Peña | Artwork By Roger Peña

Carmel’s teenagers will one day become. Don’t worry, we’ll get back to the burgers and ice cream in a moment. But for now, it’s obvious Matt and Rachel’s first passion is helping guide and influence the young people in their organization. “Our mantra is to motivate, educate, and encourage,” Matt says. “We intentionally take the risk to hire young people. The labor laws are so strict, complicated, and restricting to the amount of hours they can work. It’s kind of an administrative nightmare, but I feel it’s worth it. We aim to educate them on situations they will be in again later in life to give them the assurance

that it won’t be as bad as they think it is, or as hard as they make it to be. It’s all about getting experience and learning who they are and what they are good at or maybe not so good at.” It’s a sentiment shared by Rachel as well. “The practical lessons that a job can provide are just as important as those learned at school and from sports. Jobs teach valuable life skills like time management, accountability, and communication. Young adults need these skills now more than ever.” This approach reflects Matt and Rachel’s focus on quality and service in their business. “It’s never been about the money. If we do things

Our mantra is to “ motivate, educate, and encourage. Matt Frey

“

Imagine speaking to a business owner, and asking him or her to give you an overview of their basic product or service or why they decided to strike out on their own. In the case of Matt and Rachel Frey, owners of Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream in Carmel, it’s a fairly straightforward answer: burgers and ice cream, of course. But dig deeper, and the story becomes one of something far greater and more important beyond whatever can be found inside a menu. The product or service offered by Matt and Rachel isn’t as simple as burgers or ice cream. Here, the product is the very future of a community and what’s being served are the kind of citizens and leaders

earn it – success is measured by performance.”

Matt’s commitment to the youth in his community isn’t limited to the family business. He also serves as a board member for the Carmel Youth Assistance Program, a position allowing him to engage with others who share his desire to empower and protect youth. “Sometimes the rules and structure of a job are just what kids who lack structure in their lives need.” Matt says. “Many times, they don’t WANT to work, these kids NEED to work.”

Rachel also began working at an early age. At 14, she took her first job at the local movie theater in Seymour, Indiana and then added a second job in high school working daily at the local hardware store. “I learned a ton from my jobs. I learned how to make keys, assemble vacuums, clean a movie theater after a show, pop popcorn...so many useful skills!” she laughs. “But seriously, I probably learned so much more by working than I even realize.”She graduated from Indiana University and worked for several years for a prominent national advertising agency and later worked in the marketing departments on the client side.

The importance of hiring youth and teaching them the life skills needed in the future comes from Matt and Rachel’s own work experience. Matt, a Carmel native, started working at the age of nine to age 15, delivering papers for the Indianapolis Star; an experience he recalls fondly. “It got me out of bed, taught me time management and eye contact. Most of all, money skills...how to save and manage money.” He acquired another job at the age of 14 helping his sister and brother-in-law Chuck and Lynn Lazarra at the Ritz Charles. Later, Matt, a Ball State University graduate, went into corporate foodservice sales, working in several states such as Wisconsin, Michigan and Tennessee before returning to Indiana. According to Matt, it taught him, fundamentally, “You don’t deserve anything, you

20

Matt and Rachel attribute a lot of their entrepreneurial success to the corporate training they received early in their careers. The emphasis on branding, the focus on “ROI (Return on Investment)” and “Value Adds” helped launch their first venture in 2003, Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream in Carmel. After having worked in corporate sales for several years, Matt was looking for the right opportunity to launch a family restaurant with a fun theme focusing on quality and service. Matt and Rachel found the right location next to the increasingly popular Monon Trail just as Carmel’s downtown area started taking off. The couple decided to

for “ Working yourself makes a big difference. You know exactly why you get out of bed every morning. The work you do is very tangible when you’re a small business and you see the immediate effect of every minute you invest.

right, the money will come,” Matt says.

name it “Bub’s” after a family nickname for Matt and his brother-in-law Chuck. “I was on the road most of the week for my sales job, Rachel was at our home in Michigan with two toddlers and any family support was several hours away in Indiana, so, we asked ourselves, ‘Is this the life we want?’” Matt says about opening the business. “With the security of a good corporate job and all of the perks, it was hard to take the leap.” But a leap taken, nonetheless. When deciding to emphasize burgers and ice cream as

a theme, it came down to asking, “What does everyone like? What does everyone know? What can we do to make us better and different? We have to be really good at one or two things,” Matt says. Indeed, Bub’s has soared for the last 15 years with its original location in Carmel and expansions in Bloomington and Zionsville. Known for the “Big Ugly,”it’s a one pound (after cooked!) burger starting at 22 ounces and 10 inches in diameter. If eaten, a 4x6 picture is taken of the customer and

ABS O LUT E L IV IN GM AGAZ IN E .COM

placed on the wall. So far, two people have successfully eaten four Big Uglies, Matt says. A popular spot right off the Monon, Bub’s ice creams are hand-dipped and perfect for hot summer days. In addition to Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream, Matt and Rachel have also expanded their concepts into Bub’s Café in Carmel, Bub’s Burgers fast casual in Westfield, and Bub’s Catering. The Café focuses on breakfast items, particularly the famous “Bub Holes” which are homemade donut holes fried when ordered and offered in

“

chocolate, glazed, cinnamon, or powdered sugar. Also featured is the Big Stack, 12 ten-inch pancakes on one plate. If you eat it, you get a picture on the wall, Matt says. However, to date, no one has conquered the Big Stack yet. Bub’s Burgers in Westfield offers a fast casual version of its original business, with counter service, a condensed menu, and a faster processing time.“The Westfield location has been a model for a more franchise-able version of Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream.” Matt says, “We wanted to offer the same great product in an easier-to-operate format for potential franchisees.” Bub’s Catering provides a food truck and food trailer perfect for corporate events, luncheons, and cookouts. In fact, Bub’s has been cooking at the Carmel High School home football games for 13 years now. Looking back at those early years, Rachel recalls several things that stand out to her. “We started right when I became pregnant with our third child so it was a very busy time,” she says. “In the beginning our kids knew nothing but Bub’s. It helped that Matt and I were still so young and idealistic and had a ton of energy. Working for yourself makes a big difference. You know exactly why you get out of bed every morning. The work you do is very tangible when you’re a small business and you see the immediate effect of every minute you invest. We said to ourselves, ‘We’re going to make this work, no matter what.’ We have come to appreciate that first year of business that we struggled – starting a business from scratch, not having the sales we expected at first, the new baby added to the mix of a 2 and 4 year old at home, Matt dressing up as Santa and ringing a bell on Main Street with a sign that read “yes, we’re open!”. The stories of that first year go on and on. The struggle makes the success sweeter. That’s really the lesson we want our kids as well as the young people we hire to learn: sacrifice now for the gain later.” Matt and Rachel’s three kids, ages 14, 17, and 18 are deeply embedded in the family business with most of them having worked every possible job from waiting tables, bussing, and catering to scooping ice cream. The 14 year old actually helps manage the bakery facility at the corporate location. Matt says the “why” is one of the fundamentals of his philosophy in his business. It’s a method he carries out not only to his young employees but his kids as well. “Know the why,” he says. “We have a lot of rules and procedures at Bub’s. Some young employees have a hard time with that. However, if they know and understand the ‘why’ behind those rules, it makes more sense why we want them to follow them.”

painted surface is typically less expensive but will chip and scratch easier than a powder coated surface which adheres the paint electrostatically to the surface. Both iron and aluminum can be powder coated but iron will still rust if the surface is ever scratched. Aluminum will never rust even if exposed to the elements but can be lighter in weight so be aware of possible damage in high wind areas. Metal frames tend to be less expensive than other style options.

Wicker furniture can be made out of traditional wicker or a man-made wicker resin and is typically wrapped over an aluminum frame. Actual wicker furniture has an authentic style, but requires extensive annual maintenance. Wicker resin, which has become much more popular can withstand year round elements and requires virtually no maintenance. Higher quality products will have multi-tones in the weaving and be dry brushed to have a more natural appearance.

Another beautiful option for your outdoor spaces would be wood frame pieces. Items made out of teak or red cedar wood will be naturally water and pest resistant. Wood requires the additional maintenance task of oiling annually so it does not dry out and crack over time. Wood options provide a more organic flow with your outdoor spaces. Whether selecting metal, wicker, or wood frames for your outdoor areas, make sure any included cushions and pillows have high quality outdoor rated, antimicrobial inserts as well as weather resistant fabrics from well-

established textile manufacturers. Companies that offer the ability to order replacement cushions are ideal as the cushions tend to wear faster than the frames. To increase longevity, make sure to properly cover your cushions and frames during the winter months. Now that summer is here, more focus can be directed toward our outdoor areas. Get summer started right with a refresh on your patio living space. Use these helpful hints to make the right decision on style, maintenance effort, and durability for your space and budget.
