Dr. Anthony Feher
Orthopedic Surgery - Total Joint Replacement During his teenage years, Dr. Anthony Feher worked as a student athletic trainer for his school’s basketball team, and he carried that passion for helping others to his collegiate studies in athletic training. Ultimately, his interest in working to heal people led him to become a physician specializing in total joint replacement surgery. In his current practice, by concentrating solely on hip and knee replacements, Dr. Feher and his team can focus on each patient’s specific, individual needs, providing top-notch care and comfort. Dr. Feher points to the relationship he has with his patients as the most rewarding aspect of his work. “I enjoy hearing what people love to do, and then helping them return to their previous level of activity,” he says. “Patients expect and deserve to be well-educated about the care they’re receiving, and it’s important for me and my team to be sure that our patients and their families are well prepared for their procedure.” He experiences great joy in helping people previously unable to play tennis, take walks, or even put their shoes and socks on, to regain their quality of life, and he counts each patient as a unique blessing. “I never tell people that they ‘have to’ or ‘need to’ have a joint replaced,” he says. “It’s a very personal decision, but my team and I are happy to offer guidance and education along the way.” Outside of his practice, Dr. Feher enjoys staying active with his family, whether it’s out at the softball field or basketball court, or on a family vacation. He also enjoys golfing, waterskiing and snow skiing.

AN INSPIRING BODY OF WORK GARY NANCE By Senior Writer Matthew Hume Photography By Gabrielle Cheikh Noel Artwork By Eduardo Peña

ant your house to blend into the surroundings and to be chosen from an A, B or C floorplan? Then Gary Nance shouldn’t be your choice for its architectural design. “If you’re someone with a bit of an edge and are willing to think outside of the box, I’m ready to make that happen,” Gary says. With a career spanning more than three decades, Gary has stuck by his unique, straightforward, and self-described “unfiltered” approach while working with clients throughout the Midwest to design homes that will stand the test of time, while inspiring wonder now and 50 years from now. “I make sure to make the design of the home fit the client’s daily life,” Gary tells me. “As important as a great design is, you also need to have it be functional. The details are just as crucial as to where the linens, towels and dishware go.” Gary’s creativity in producing functional designs has won multiple awards, his work having appeared on the cover of Traditional Home and Better Homes & Gardens magazines, and his penchant for design flair goes back as far as he can recall. “I was the little kid playing blocks in first grade, drawing houses, filling up notepads with design ideas,” Gary says. “I would buy homebuilding magazines, study those floor plans, and imagine how cool it would be to walk through those houses.” As a teenager, Gary met prominent Indianapolis builder John Kleinops (Gary played hockey, and John was a local youth hockey coach), and that connection meant that young Gary would never have to look for a summer job. It would also, serendipitously, lead Gary to meet a young woman named Nancy, who would one day become his wife. “I worked for John every summer as soon as I could drive, working construction,” he tells me. “And as luck would have it, he was designing Nancy’s family’s home when they moved to Indianapolis from Detroit.” Between the work Gary did for John and the sketches he made for him and other builders, Gary knew that home design and construction would always be a part of his life.

SERVING AS INSPIRATION With such talent and under such tutelage, Gary nevertheless struggled in his early years, and he wasn’t exactly sure why. He wouldn’t discover until years later, in adulthood, that he suffered from dyslexia. “I wondered what the hell was wrong with me back then,” he admits. Today, though, Gary points to overcoming dyslexia as his biggest asset. “Overcoming the hurdles that come with dyslexia has taught me how to overcome other challenges in business,” he explains. And he’s used his success as a way of inspiring other sufferers of dyslexia, speaking at the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana’s Camp Delafield with others who have risen high within their respective fields. “When we speak at Camp Delafield we emphasize that it’s OK to be different, to encourage parents to be patient. We’re just wired to see things differently. Even today, I have to watch myself writing e-mails so I don’t transpose words and letters. It’s important to show these kids that they have a bright future even though they are dyslexic.” Recently, Gary has discovered yet another way of inspiring others. If it’s not with his world-class architectural designs, launching his own product line— The Gary Nance Collection of custom hardware and light fixtures—or stories of surmounting life’s hardships, Gary Nance is inspiring others with a newfound dedication to healthy living. In fact, as healthy at 66 as he’s ever been, Gary can now say that he has an award-winning body. REACHING FOR NEW HEIGHTS Four years ago, after Gary and his wife attended their son’s wedding in Jamaica, the wedding pictures served Gary a much-needed wake-up call. “I could see I’d really gained weight over the years,” he says. After a physical a few months later revealed high blood pressure and signs of liver damage, as well as a scale reading of over 290 pounds, Gary’s wife urged him to talk to the trainers at a local gym that was opening. There he met Ben Raichel and Connor Houston, his first trainers, who helped him lose the majority of that excess weight. He had no idea then that what would start out as your average attempt to reclaim health would eventually lead him to the competition stage. Months of tailored cardio and strength training led to a weight loss of over 80 pounds and a waist-size reduction from 54 inches to 32. “If it hadn’t been for my trainers, I would have quit 20 times over,” Gary says. “They changed the course of my life.” And for most men, this could have been the end of the story—but in fact, Gary’s transformation had just begun.
“Connor asked if I’d thought about doing a bodybuilding show,” Gary says. “I said no way—I had seen these people in magazines and thought that was completely unreachable for me.” His trainers wouldn’t take no for an answer, though, and eventually took Gary to see a contest. “I was sitting between Connor and my good friend Joe Mobareki, who is a body building coach and nutritionist, thinking there was no way I could do this, but I thought, well, why not!” Joe helped coach Gary with his posing, which is just as hard as training, and coordinated a team of trainers to help him prepare for the stage. This included Zach Pello and James Kraus for strength training and conditioning. One year later, with the help of his team, Gary Nance competed in his first bodybuilding competition in Ft. Wayne, and since then has gone on to compete in four more. In August 2019, he won 1st place in his division at the Indianapolis NPC Master’s Division Championships, and two weeks later took 1st place in his division at the NPC Indiana State Championships at the Murat Theater in downtown Indianapolis. Getting ready for a bodybuilding championship is no laughing matter, Gary explains. It’s a 14- to 18-week process, with a strict regimen of strength and cardio straining, and an even more stringent diet. “Joe could tell if I’d been cheating just by looking at my body,” Gary says. “They can tell from the way your skin shines!” As the day of the competition drew near, Joe even made his meals, adjusting his diet to show off his musculature to greatest competitive advantage. And as if preparing for a state bodybuilding championship wasn’t pressure enough, Joe asked him just two weeks before the show if Gary would mind if he joined the contest, too. “We actually ended up battling each other!” Gary tells me. “I was in the dressing room at intermission, and they told me to get back in my trunks and get back upstairs.” He hit the stage just in time to hear the emcee telling Gary’s story—of how he ran his own design business, of how he had had a health scare, and of how he found time to successfully train for the competition. He was completely stunned and honored to be awarded with the Promoter’s Choice Award from Dave Bowers. Through the experience, he found the body building community to be a tight knit group who support and cheer each other on. “It turns out that my competing in these shows has been a huge inspiration to other men and women my age and
ABSOLUTELIVING
younger,” Gary says. “People come up to me at the grocery store and ask where I work out—they’re shocked to find out how old I am. And as far as work is concerned, I have more energy now to work with the younger clients.” Just last month, Gary had another physical—and this time his scores were perfect. “My doctor was a little miffed at me,” he laughs. With the help of his daughter Taylor, who runs his architecture business, Gary is sharing his story now on Instagram through Gary Nance Fitness. The idea, he says, is to help inspire others in making a healthy lifestyle change. Taylor has found that many people cannot believe he did it the natural way. “They always ask me, ok, how did he really do it?” she says. “It seems everyone wants a quick fix, and it doesn’t happen overnight. It takes hard work, and part of his Instagram shows the ups and downs of how hard he really did work.” And what does Nancy, Gary’s wife of more than 40 years, think of this transformation? “She loves it that I got myself in shape and in better health,” he says. As for Gary, while there may be more competitions in the future, he says that part has run its course for now, but that he’ll maintain his strength and stamina as best as possible through continued exercise. And in doing so, Gary Nance will continue to serve as an inspiring designer, business owner, and beacon of healthy living to those in his circle and beyond.
Gary draws design inspiration from all across the board—from his travels, from his extensive library of famous architects and designers, from Houzz, and even from the cinema. “There are so many great old movies with amazing houses in them,” he says. “Look at Holiday Inn and Christmas in Connecticut. While most people are listening to the music and watching the acting, I’m looking at the rooms and the ceilings, the French doors and the fireplaces.” It Takes a Team! Laser Hair Removal
Everything You Need to Know
Never shaving again seems like an impossible dream, doesn't it? Who wouldn't want to retire the razor for good and still have silky soft legs, a hair-free underarm with no work, or a bare bikini line with zero maintenance? Bettia Turner, PR Specialist at Milan Laser Hair Remowal answers 10 questions that cover just about everything you need to know about laser hair removal.
HOW DOES IT WORK? The laser works by targeting the pigment of the hair and delivering the treatment directly to the root of the hair. The root of the hair is destroyed with the energy of the laser, and after a week or two, the hair will shed from the skin. That hair is now gone forever. Each laser hair removal session provides on average a 15% reduction in hair. WHAT TYPES OF HAIR AND SKIN ARE BEST FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL? Milan Laser can treat ALL hair types and skin tones. Laser hair removal technology has evolved quite a bit since the 90s, when the treatments were only recommended if you had fair skin and dark hair. The new technology has made it available to everyone. Still, not all lasers are created equal. At Milan, we use the most effective laser on the market, The Candela GentleMax Pro, a dual wavelength laser that combines the nd:YAG and Alex lasers for high performance and proven results for all skin tones. In addition,
ABSOLUTELIVING
each client at Milan Laser is given a personal treatment plan created specifically with their individual needs, skin tone and hair type in mind. WHAT PARTS OF THE BODY CAN BE TREATED WITH LASER HAIR REMOVAL? Milan Laser can remove unwanted hair from your entire body except the top of the head and eye area. The most popular treatment areas are under arms, bikini line, legs and face. DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL HURT? Laser hair removal is not painless. But it is much less painful than waxing, and it's a true permanent solution to unwanted hair. So unlike waxing and shaving you won't have to do it for a lifetime. Most clients say it feels like a rubber band snap. The laser we use at Milan, The Candela GentleMax Pro, has a cooling mist that sprays after each pulse of the laser to also help with discomfort. HOW LONG DOES A LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT TAKE? Laser hair removal treatment times vary depending on the area. For example, an underarm treatment takes 5-7 minutes, lower legs about 10-12 minutes, and a full-body treatment takes an hour or less. HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED? Laser hair removal is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. We all have different hair types so it will be different for everyone. On average, to be hair free, you will need between 7-10 treatments.
Milan Laser offers The Unlimited Package with each body area purchased. So If you need 8 or 15 sessions, The Unlimited Package ensures you will be totally hair free at one affordable cost, with NO surprises.
town. There are no restrictions! We do suggest that you use sunscreen and stay out of the sun for 7 days after your treatment. WILL THE HAIR GROW BACK? No, it won’t. Our hair grows in cycles, so the treated hair will not grow back, but new hairs may grow, which is why it takes about 7-10 treatments to be hair-free. There are many other factors that can cause new hair to grow, such as hormones, pregnancy and PCOS. If you are treated at Milan Laser Hair Removal, each body area purchased comes with The Unlimited Package. So, if you see new hair growth in 6 months or 6 years after you are graduated, no worries—just call up Milan Laser and book a touch-up appointment free of charge, no questions asked.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE PROCEDURE? We require that you shave the area being treated the day before or the day of treatment. The skin should be washed clean with no lotions or deodorants before treatments. It is also very important to avoid sun exposure and self-tanning. The laser attracts to the pigment of the hair, so if your skin is darker than normal this can affect the results of your treatment. Clients using medications like Accutane or Retinol are also asked to discontinue use at least one week before they are treated.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GET LASER HAIR REMOVAL PROCEDURE? Believe it or not Now! Lack of sun exposure makes the winter months the best time to begin your laser hair removal journey. If you start now, you will have smooth silky hair-free skin this summer.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER GETTING LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT? After your laser hair removal treatment is done, you can go back to your everyday life. Go to the gym, go back to work or shower and get ready for a night on the

The Super Sleek Look of Black In the design world, black is hot, hot, HOT. Serving as a top choice for the exterior, black has now become a hot design element for the interior as well. And although white windows are still the most popular option, black is definitely a close second. Let’s explore some options for incorporating the hotness of black with today’s trends in windows. One of the biggest design elements in windows are narrow site lines. This simply means that the frame and the sash of the window are narrow in width. Solid steel windows offer the most narrow site lines available, but steel also comes with a high price tag. And while no other windows will mimic the lines of steel, especially on the exterior of the home, there exist some design tricks available to help create that look on the interior side. Franklin Window & Door recently collaborated with Custom Living and Haus Love Interiors on a remodel project where the exterior of the windows needed to blend well with the existing windows. The house has a traditional exterior with aluminum clad wood windows. The homeowners selected Marvin Windows for
ABSOLUTELIVING
the project and utilized a combination of both doublehung style and fixed picture windows. For the interior, the homeowners wanted to achieve narrow site lines to give the look of steel. To achieve this aesthetically, Franklin Window & Door used black sashes (the functioning part of the window) with white frames (what holds the sash). A narrow simulated divided lite bar (grids) were used to achieve the look of the multi-lite steel. Another trick that can be used, especially when drywall returns are used rather than interior trim around the windows, is a narrow jamb depth window. Marvin Windows offers a narrow frame window in their contemporary line which allows for a drywall return in a house built with 2x4 walls. If you are considering changing the look of your existing windows, or if you’re preparing to build a new home with black windows, check out some of Franklin Window and Door’s educational articles about black windows. • Black Windows—Do I need to worry about fading? • Marvin Essentials vs Pella Impervia—The battle of the black fiberglass window • How much do Aluminum Clad-Wood Replacement Windows Cost? Travel Goals 9 of the World's Most Amazing Bucket-List Experiences
New Decade. New You. New Travel Adventures!
1. Swim at the world's best beach in Brazil Crowned number one in TripAdvisor's annual Travellers' Choice awards, Brazil's Baia do Sancho is a picturesque and undisturbed stretch of sand, located on the small island of Fernando de Noronha off the coast of central Brazil. Consistently ranked among the world's best beaches, it's a quiet spot surrounded by rainforest and is only accessible via steep steps carved into the rockside that hugs it.

2. Catch the Northern Lights Iceland, Canada and Alaska are all among the best places for spotting the colorful shimmering of the aurora borealis; however, Norway's Lofoten Archipelago just might be the most beautiful. Characterized by dramatic scenery, traditional fishermen's houses and short Arctic winter days, it's the perfect setting for a wilder winter adventure spotting the Northern Lights.
3. Marvel at Chichén Itzá, Mexico Central to the ancient Mayan civilization, Chichén Itzá is an intricate complex of stepped pyramids, temples, columned arches and stone sculptures. One of the most popular destinations in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, it has also been named one of the new seven wonders of the world. The site is still shrouded in mystery and provides a fascinating insight into the country's ancient past.
4. Walk the Great Wall of China Stretching thousands of miles across China, various iterations of the Great Wall have existed since the 7th century BC—though most of what you can see today dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). You can't walk the entire thing, but some sections are an easy day trip from Beijing.
5. Cruise the fjords, Norway Get out on deck to marvel at Norway’s rearing, rugged coastline. Cruise ships ply the network of fjords, as they explore spectacular waterfalls, steep mountainsides and–with a bit of luck–schools of dolphins, porpoises and whales. The gushing cascades of UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, one of the western fjords, should be top of your list.
ABSOLUTELIVING
6. Touch the sky in Dubai, UAE Dubai, with all its glitz and glam and towering skyscrapers, is really unlike any other city on the planet, and as it hosts World Expo 2020, the world's attention will once more be on Dubai. Travelers, however, will probably be more interested in the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa, marking its 10th anniversary in 2020.
7. Circle Lake Garda, Italy Most guides recommend enjoying the sublime scenery of Lake Garda from the water, and ferries ply up and down between the main towns. But there’s another, more dramatic way to discover Garda’s quieter waterside villages–and it’s not for the faint-hearted. Zip in and out of tunnels as you drive along the lakeside road, and admire the lake from the winding route that carves through the mountainside.
8. Camel trek in the Sahara, Morocco Ditch the four-wheel-drive in favor of a camel, and really get to grips with desert life. With arcs of sand, mountains and plateaus, the Sahara is the world’s largest hot desert and possibly one of the most forbidding places on earth. But the utter contrast with everyday life is why you should visit. Help load up your camel and set off with a local guide for an exceptional trek.
9. Tour Costa Rica’s canopy Whether it’s ziplining above a cloud forest or spotting birds from a suspension bridge, the best way to explore Costa Rica is from a height. The world's top ecotourism destination, Costa Rica was one of the earliest adopters of connecting nature conservation with responsible travel. Staying at the country's eco-lodges and treetop hotels is already on many a traveler's bucket list; however, as the future shifts to sustainable and eco-friendly travel, Costa Rica is only going to grow in popularity.

Interior Design Trends for 2020 2020 is here, and that means new design trends on the horizon! Yes, the New Year ushers in a fresh start for burning off all those holiday calories, but it’s also the perfect time to renew your home. Here we feature some top trends that will surely find their way into our readers’ homes this year!
ABSOLUTELIVING
BIOPHILIA DESIGN Biophilia is a new trend that incorporates human design and natural elements in a way that doesn’t seem manufactured. In the past few years, our society has grappled with climate change and sustainability. A lot of consumers want to have a stylish home, yet it still incorporates organic elements from the environment. Recycled wood can be used for chairs, tables, and floors while plants can contribute to your home’s organic aesthetic while still promoting a clean, environmentally friendly home. High tech homes were in, but 2020 is all about getting back and giving back to nature. Bedrooms and bathrooms are transformed into ethereal spaces created by using rich earthy elements including metals, wood, and stone. VELVET Velvet may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s going to be steaming hot and trendy in 2020. It’s the perfect blend of luxury and comfort. When most people think of velvet, they’re often thinking about the old red velvet upholstery of yesteryear. This year and into the next, interior design firms are taking a deep dive into velvet design options, particularly for sofas. And our color options are wider than ever. We’re talking vibrant blues, pinks, burnt orange and shades of taupe. The possibilities for velvet furniture in 2020 are endless.
GEOMETRIC PATTERNS Geometric patterns have been on an upward trend for years now, so much so that you can find geometric patterned anything, anywhere. The only problem with geometric patterns being so popular is that it’s on everything—cups, notebooks, wallpaper, couches, bedding, art, floors, light fixtures, and other decor. It’s so easy to overdo it, but don’t expect geometric designs to be going away anytime soon. That’s why 2020 is all about geometric balance. You can still make a statement with bold and vibrant geometric patterns. Stick with more classic or contemporary patterns with chairs and throws. Pick an area of your home where you want the geometric pattern to make a bold statement. How about geometric bathroom floor tiles, or a thinlined geometric wallpaper with a not-so-busy pattern!
ABSOLUTELIVING
MIXED METALS INTERIOR DESIGNS Metals are going to be all over the place in 2020. We’re talking silver, gold, tin, and copper. Tin panels are predicted to be a popular backsplash option for kitchens. The mixed metal decor trend will also be pretty popular. Silver and brown metals will work well together, like iron and gold or bronze. Be careful not to mix more than three metals in one space, or your decor could become way too busy and overwhelming for one room.
THE RETURN OF BLACK Black is back and bigger than ever! Interior design firms predict that “black everything,” from cabinets to sinks, paint, and countertops will be one of the top trends in 2020. Black walls, finishes, and furniture can make your home look high end and on-trend. One of the reasons black has been so off-putting to consumers in the past is because there’s this assumption that black makes a room look smaller and it can feel a little claustrophobic. You can combat that problem by including contrasting colors. We’re looking forward to bold and matte blacks this year!
FLORAL WALLPAPER Floral fabrics and wallpaper are other throwbackturned-contemporary trends to look forward to in 2020. Florals have technically been around for a long time, but there’s a big difference between the floral interior design trends of 2020, and the old pink flowery wallpaper and furniture you might remember seeing in your grandmother’s home. Traditionally, florals work well on wallpaper. Wallpaper trends today incorporate floral patterns of different sizes and color patterns. There is a strong attraction to vibrant colors like yellow and contrasting colors that will make your walls pop. The same is true today, but 2020 florals are an abstract chic rendition of this interior design classic.
