Keep Your Heart Healthy! Breathe easier by following these 5 habits.
Y
ou know that exercise and a good diet can keep your heart healthy. But what else can you do to keep your ticker going strong? Here are five key things you need
to do every day to help your heart work most efficiently. Incorporate these habits into your lifestyle, and your heart health will be the best it can be.
ABSOLUTELIVING
#1 Eat healthy fats, NOT trans fats.
We need fats in our diet, including saturated and polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats. One fat we don’t need is trans fat, which is known to increase your risk of developing heart disease or having a stroke over a lifetime. This is because trans fat clogs your arteries by raising your bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and lowering your good cholesterol levels (HDL). By cutting them from your diet, you improve the blood flow throughout your body. So, what are trans fats? They are industry-produced fats often used in packaged baked goods, snack foods, margarines and fried fast foods to add flavor and texture. TIP: Read the labels on all foods. Trans fat appears on the ingredients list as partially hydrogenated oils. Look for 0 percent trans fat. Make it a point to avoid eating foods with trans fat.
#2 Practice good dental hygiene, especially flossing your teeth daily.
Dental health is a good indication of overall health, including your heart, because those who have periodontal (gum) disease often have the same risk factors for heart disease. Studies continue on this issue, but many have shown that bacteria in the mouth involved in the development of gum disease can move into the bloodstream and cause an elevation in C-reactive protein, a marker for inflammation in the blood vessels. These changes may, in turn, increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. TIP: Floss and brush your teeth daily to ward off gum disease. It’s more than cavities you may have to deal with if you are fighting gum disease.
#3 Get enough sleep.
Sleep is an essential part of keeping your heart healthy. If you don’t sleep enough, you may be at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease no matter your age or other health habits. One study looking at 3,000 adults over the age of 45 found that those who slept fewer than six hours per night were about twice as likely to have a stroke or heart attack as people who slept six to eight hours per night. Researchers believe sleeping too little causes disruptions in underlying health conditions and biological processes, including blood pressure and inflammation. TIP: Make sleep a priority. Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep most nights. If you have sleep apnea, seek treatment, as this condition is linked to disease and arrhythmias.
#4 Don’t sit for too long at one time. In recent years, research has suggested that staying seated for long periods of time is bad for your health no matter how much exercise you do. This is bad news for the many people who sit at sedentary jobs all day. When looking at the combined results of several observational studies that included nearly 800,000 people, researchers found that in those who sat the most, there was an associated 147 percent increase in cardiovascular events and a 90 percent increase in death caused by these events. In addition, sitting for long periods of time (especially when traveling) increases your risk of deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot). TIP: Experts say it’s important to move throughout the day. Park farther away from the office, take a few shorter walks throughout the day and/or use a standing work station so you can move up and down. And remember to exercise on most days.
#5 Avoid secondhand smoke like the plague.
Studies show that the risk of developing heart disease is about 25 to 30 percent higher for people who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work. According to the American Heart Association, exposure to tobacco smoke contributes to about 34,000 premature heart disease deaths and 7,300 lung cancer deaths each year. And nonsmokers who have high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol have an even greater risk of developing heart disease when they’re exposed to secondhand smoke. This is because the chemicals emitted from cigarette smoke promote the development of plaque buildup in the arteries. TIP: Be firm with smokers that you do not want to be around environmental smoke — and keep children away from secondhand smoke. Follow these five tips and you’ll be doing your heart a favor. You’ll feel better over time and be able to stay active longer with a heart-healthy lifestyle.

LORENZO FINESTRE CORI AND SCOTT BROWN By Senior Writer Matthew Hume | Photography By Gabrielle Cheikh Noel | Artwork By Eduardo Peña Cori and Scott Brown, owners of Franklin Window and Door (1069 3rd Avenue SW, Carmel), are embarking on a European tour of design grandeur, slated to arrive at the Indiana Design Center by early spring 2020. Their new design gallery, Lorenzo Finestre, will be your destination in grand style for Italian, Belgian, and Dutch windows and doors unlike anything else you’ve seen in the Midwest. And with Cori and Scott bringing these designs to the Indianapolis region and other nearby metropolitan areas, they’ve managed to put the Midwest on these European design manufacturers’ maps as a geographic magnet for style. “It’s not just Florida, New York and California anymore,” says Cori. “Indiana has taken its place on the cutting edge of sleek, 21st century European design.” The road to Lorenzo Finestre appeared rather unexpectedly in front of Scott and Cori in early 2018, when Scott met Lorenzo Bona, founder of Limestone Economics, LLC, at a trade conference. “Lorenzo was telling me about this Italian door
manufacturer—Oikos—and how they were interested in expanding business opportunities throughout the US,” Scott tells me. ““He asked me if I could get some architects together to attend a show Oikos was hosting outside Venice, and I took him up on that.” That spring, Scott and Cori, and a group of their architect colleagues, made their first trip to Italy together, having the time of their lives, and sparking a new opportunity for the veteran team behind Franklin Window and Door. “Over the last two years, we’ve been learning about new manufacturers, visiting places throughout Europe, working to create a collection,” Scott explains. By about six months ago, Scott says the European collection had grown sufficiently to look for a new space to present them to central Indiana designers, and the team approached the Indiana Design Center. “We thought, what better way to present this European style to Indiana than to bring the collection to the Design Center?” And with that, Lorenzo Finestre was born. (Lorenzo from Lorenzo Bona, and Finestre from the Italian word for windows.)

AN ABIDING LOVE FOR THE TRADE Scott brings decades of experience in construction to Lorenzo Finestre. He landed his first construction job in carpentry at the age of 17 and had spent most of his working life as the owner of a remodeling company specializing in historic restoration, until the couple launched Franklin Window and Door in 2012. Cori’s previous life was as an RN, but her childhood predicted a life calling in a more creative field. “I was definitely more into design and fashion growing up,” she says, “but I came from a background where my entire family was in the medical profession. I wasn’t fully aware of the directions I could go, so I went to school and ended up in healthcare.” She relishes this second career with every ounce of her being. “I absolutely love what I do now,” she tells me. “I get to be creative every day, be a part of putting beautiful masterpieces together.” With Scott’s longevity in the field, I asked him if the pleasure had faded at all. “Not at all—I love what I do,” he says, emphatically.
time to the Indiana and surrounding markets. Among their most jaw-dropping pieces is the Oikos pivot door—the “Nova” and the “Synua”—and Lorenzo Finestre is the only place in the Midwest where this stately door is available. Cori explains, “Your typical door is hung on hinges, and all the door’s weight goes to those edges—so you usually max out at about 42 inches wide.” The Nova and Synua pivot doors, however, allow for a considerably grander scale. “With the Oikos door, all the weight rests on a pivot pin that can support 600 pounds,” she says. “As long as the foundation the door is on can hold it, you’re good!” I jumped at the chance to play pretend that the display model was mine and sent it swiveling smoothly shut with the lightest push. The Nova doors are airtight, watertight, and bulletproof, and the Synua doors even come with interchangeable “skins,” much like those we enjoy customizing our phones with. The Synua display model is clad in porcelain tile on the outside and a white glass on the inside. “We can do metals, woods, whatever the customer wants,” Cori says.
NEW BRAND, NEW PRODUCTS As owners of Lorenzo Finestre, Scott and Cori Brown take great pride in vetting incredible designs from a number of European suppliers and making them available for the first
The door’s intricate locking mechanism can also be controlled via Wi-Fi. “You can program it from anywhere to open or lock it,” Cori explains. Another distinguishing feature of the Oikos door is that it is coplanar with the

Much of Cori’s and Scott’s work is in helping architects to have more options in design and architectural detail. “We help architects and designers to realize their vision with products they don’t always know exist,” Cori says. They have an especially tight relationship with the Indianapolis architectural community.
What do Stradivarius violins have to do with Lorenzo Finestre? In 2018, the Italian Dolomites witnessed severe storms that uprooted and destroyed 1.5 million trees in a spruce wood known as “The Musical Woods,” thanks to a long history of providing wood for instrument making. Cori explains that one of their Italian light manufacturers, Kundalini, has a particular light, the Kushi Wood Edition, that features a wooden skewer, crafted from the forest’s reclaimed spruce. Kundalini was part of an initiative to recover and recycle part of the felled wood. “This became the inspiration behind Kushi Wood Edition,” states Cori.
learn, and so we started asking more about what was acceptable in the Italian culture. We wanted to feel more like locals—to get entrenched in the culture.” Part of that immersion and attention to creating a better cultural understanding came in the form of language lessons. Another part came in culinary form. Scott explains that prior to Italy, the couple and their teenage sons were mostly a meat-and-potatoes family. “Now it’s risotto or croque monsieur!” Cori finishes. “I’ve bought Derek Mills, Laura Wagner - CSO architecture, Scott and Cori Brown, Gary Nance, three Venetian cookbooks—and I refuse to buy Taylor Nance - Gary Nance Design, Jane Goldberg - Goldberg Design Group, store-brand olive oil anymore!” Lorenzo Bona - Limestone Economics. Scott says they’ve cut out about 90% of processed foods since coming back from their wall—that is, it blends in seamlessly, flush with the wall, ideal for hidden safe rooms. “You can completely hide the travels. Their colleague Francesco (of Oikos) owns 300 olive oil trees in Calabria—and has invited them to visit for door,” Cori says, “and you use your thumbprint to enter.” the harvest. Such are the perks. Hailing from a few degrees’ latitude north of Oikos’s Venetian headquarters, Lorenzo Finestre also offers Additionally, Scott marvels at the craftsmanship of the highest-grade, solid steel-frame windows from the Italians behind these magnificent lines of Oikos doors, at Netherlands. “These have the narrowest sight lines you’ll the pride these skilled craftsmen, many with advanced ever encounter,” Cori says. And the steel is thermally degrees in engineering, take in their work. “I mean, these broken, meaning you’ll never worry that an assault of guys in the factory are literally wearing lab coats while frigid, Indiana wind will find its way through. “Being that this they’re working. The representative from Italy who came to Dutch company is over 300 years old—and working with Carmel to train us on installing these doors, watching him, the stringent European energy codes—they have a history it was like he was creating a sculpture. And the precise measurement is incredible. We stop at a 32nd of an inch, of being energy efficient.” and they get down to fractions of millimeters.” LA DOLCE VITA It’s a dream come true for Cori and Scott to offer their More than anything, Scott says that the couple’s exposure clients such an incredible and diverse line of European to the Italian way of life has given them an opportunity to windows, doors and lighting. However, the time they have look at themselves from a different angle. “We’ve tried to spent in Italy over the past two years, and the lessons integrate some of what we’ve learned over there into our they’ve learned from their new friends and colleagues, own lives,” he says. “It’s important to step back and realize have changed the couple in ways that extend far beyond there’s more important parts of life than just the day-to-day business. “We had never really traveled before,” Scott work.” says, “and getting to meet people from around the world and learning the ins-and-outs of other cultures has really In reflecting on the couple’s meteoric rise in the design been fun for us.” Of course, the cultural immersion didn’t community over the past eight years, Scott comments come without its foibles. One of the team’s first meetings on his own work philosophy. “I say all the time, I never in Italy was with an Oikos representative. “We knew his see where we are—I just see a gap and where we could name was Mario, so we said, ‘Hello, Mario!’ and carried be,” he says. “With this new line, we want to bring our on,” Scott says. “Only later did our Italian teacher tell us clients the products, but also that European experience. that there’s an expected formality when you first meet We want the experience with Lorenzo Finestre to bring someone. Americans tend to be informal, so that took our homeowners a little of that personalized European feel some adjustment. We knew there was so much more to every time they use these products.”

Is coffee healthy or not?
Here's how much you should drink — and how much is too much!
Whether it's a hot cup before work, warm latte on a snowy day, or an iced coffee on a summer morning, there is no doubt that Americans love coffee—or at least its caffeine. Whatever it is that draws people to coffee—be it its taste and aroma or effects as a stimulant—it is undeniable that this is one of the world's most popular beverages. In the United States, coffee drinking has even been on the rise. Statistic reports indicate that, in the 2018/2019 fiscal year alone, people in the U.S. have consumed almost 26.5 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee. According to the same reports, this is significantly more than they consumed during the previous fiscal year. Many recent studies have suggested that drinking coffee can bring a number of benefits in addition to enhancing focus and productivity. In fact, researchers have argued that coffee can help maintain brain health, help increase a person's lifespan, and even slow down prostate cancer. However, as with any food or beverage—even the most nutritious and healthful ones—there is a limit to how much coffee we can safely consume.
ABSOLUTELIVING
Not only can drinking too much coffee create ill effects in the short-term—some of the symptoms of overcaffeination are headaches, dizziness, and nausea—but consistently having too much of this drink could increase a person's risk of developing cardiovascular disease. How much coffee is "too much" for the heart? This is the question that scientists at the University of South Australia in Adelaide aimed to answer in their new study, the findings of which now appear in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The researchers build on previous studies indicating that people with a specific variant of the gene CYP1A2, which plays a key role in caffeine metabolism, metabolize this substance less efficiently. This can put them at an increased risk of developing high blood pressure (hypertension) and cardiovascular disease. In the new study, the investigators wanted to determine how much coffee would increase the cardiovascular risk of people with and without this genetic variant.
To find out, they analyzed the data of 347,077 people aged 37–73, of whom 8,368 had been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. "An estimated 3 billion cups of coffee are enjoyed every day around the world," explains study co-author Prof. Elina Hyppönen. For this reason, she explained that knowing the limits of what's good for you and what's not is imperative. "As with many things," she cautions, "it's all about moderation: overindulge and your health will pay for it." In their analysis, the scientists looked at how much coffee the participants drank per day, whether or not they had the genetic variant that resulted in slow caffeine metabolism, and how likely they were to develop cardiovascular disease. They found that despite the fact that people without the specific CYP1A2 genetic variant were able to process caffeine four times faster than those with it, this did not appear to significantly
ABSOLUTELIVING
affect their cardiovascular risk. However, the amount of coffee they consumed per day did. In fact, all the people who frequently drank six or more cups of coffee per day—the scientists defined one cup as containing around 75 milligrams of caffeine—had a modest increase in cardiovascular disease risk. "Most people would agree that if you drink a lot of coffee, you might feel jittery, irritable, or perhaps even [nauseous]—that's because caffeine helps your body work faster and harder, but it is also likely to suggest that you may have reached your limit for the time being," says Prof. Hyppönen. "We also know that risk of cardiovascular disease increases with high blood pressure, a known consequence of excess caffeine consumption," she notes. "In order to maintain a healthy heart and a healthy blood pressure, people must limit their coffees to fewer than six cups a day—based on our data, six was the tipping point where caffeine started to negatively affect cardiovascular risk."

LIVING THE ISLAND LIFE 5 UNIQUE ISLANDS TO VISIT IN 2020
Whether you crave culture, adventure, or simply want to relax on a beach, at least one of these islands should fulfill your travel dreams. “To travel is to live.” Hans Christian Andersen
Tremiti Archipelago, Italy It’s 2020, but in the Tremiti Archipelago it feels more like 1950. The five Aleppo-pined Adriatic islands of the Tremiti Archipelago and national park are just off the coast of Puglia’s Gargano Peninsula, the sharp-edged spur of Italy’s boot. A ferry ride from Termoli leads to placid otherworld of Parthenopean dialects, cerulean waters, millefeuilled limestone cliffs, piratical grottos, purple sea-sponges, and WW II shipwrecks. There's even a submerged statue of Padre Pio off the coast of uninhabited Capraia to dive to, proving there's as much to see underwater as above.
ABSOLUTELIVING
Kea, Greece Only an hour's ferry ride from Lavrio, just outside Athens, this Cycladic island has everything going for it: a prettily faded Hora straddling two hills, a ritzy yacht scene around the mini-resorts of Vourkari and Koundouros, and blindingly blue bays with some of the best wreck diving in Greece. (The most famous shipwreck is the Britannic, sister ship of the Titanic). Then there’s the magnificent ancient city of Karthaia, poised above the twin bays of Poles like a mirage. Like many of Kea’s beaches, Poles is only accessible on foot or by boat. But it's all change on the bay of Vroskopos: Greece's first One&Only will open here in 2021, with a beach club and three restaurants. Go before the crowds catch on, and head inland where Athenians' stone villas are hunkered into the sun-bleached landscape— Hipaway has some nice hideouts. Or disappear at Kathikies, a century-old farmhouse stranded at the end of a dirt track with nothing but cicadas, butterflies and boundless Aegean views for miles.
Prince Edward Island, Canada Canada's smallest province also has its biggest foodie rep. Prince Edward Island is known for its blue mussels, Malpeque oysters, and crustaceans— head here for the 25th annual shellfish festival in September, where lobster parties are held on the beach as the sky turns red behind the lighthouse. The island got itself new luxe rooms this past summer with The Inn at Fortune Bridge, run by chef Michael Smith, a Food Network regular; a 1957 Bentley ferries guests to its sister property for the nightly open-fire feast. And this late spring, the Arts Hotel opens in Charlottetown, with a mini gallery of works by Salvador Dalí.

British Virgin Islands Conservationist Laurance Rockefeller's determination to preserve the wildness of Virgin Gorda led to a '60s assemblage of unobtrusive villas that made minimal impact on the coconut groves and sands around them—an approach many of today's hoteliers are just catching on to. The Rosewood Little Dix Bay reopened this January after a four-year renovation, with 80 updated guest rooms, and hiking trails across the island play up the wellness factor. End your trek at the new cliffside spa, where treatment rooms peekaboo over the sea.
Dominica Dominica is an island defined by bare-knuckled blue mountains, hot springs, and a tangle of rain forests, along with a river for every day of the year. And yet lodging options have been limited for those wanting more than a beach flop. But with the October opening of the Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski, this lush paradise has upped its appeal. The hotel faces a shimmering stretch of the Caribbean, but head round the back and rooms have safari-style views of the tightly forested Cabrits National Park. A good place to hole up in after dancing at the island's annual World Creole Music Festival.

BATHROOM TRENDS FOR 2020
The New Year is always the best time to renovate your home, and what better place to start than the bathroom? With all that’s trending this year, make this the time to update your bathroom—and make it a place to retreat, relax and find time for yourself! Here are six trending bathroom designs to watch this year.
1. Brass Fixtures and Accents This finish might be waning when it comes to kitchen trends, but for the bathroom, it’s just getting started. Brass fixtures and accents immediately add a touch of luxury. Maybe it’s their warmth, or maybe because they’re obviously different from the basic styles, but brass fixtures and accents make the bathroom distinctive.
ABSOLUTELIVING
2. Concrete Cool The ultimate in utilitarian chic, concrete—from uber-dramatic concrete walls to more subtle concrete countertops—is a next-level emerging bathroom trend. At once minimalist and statement making, 2020’s concrete bathrooms will mix in organic elements like wood and greenery for a thoroughly modern and spa-like aesthetic.
3. Sumptuous dark colors Rich, dark walls have long been the norm in bedrooms and living rooms, but now it’s the bathroom’s turn to take a walk on the dark side. Dip your toe into the trend with a shower outfitted in sumptuous navy tiles, or be bold and fill the entire bathroom with rich greens and blues. The rich colors go perfectly with this seasons other trend for brass and metallic finishings, creating a luxurious look.
4. Framed Mirrors The style of powder rooms is definitely moving from the understated to the bold, and framed mirrors—for really any bathroom—are far more stylish than the panels or beveled basics. Using a framed mirror creates the opportunity to add more personality or drama to a space.
5. Statement Tile Shapes Take bathroom tile to the next level by playing with texture for a thoroughly modern effect. From ruggedly cut tiles to a mix of unconventional shapes and geometric patterns, modern tiles are a beautiful way to add a wow–factor to your bathroom.
6. The Marble Effect Marble countertops are ever popular for the kitchen, and now the classic, upscale feel of the material is moving into the bathroom. From marble vanities to full-on marble walls, this versatile material brings a luxe feel to the bathroom.
