ANTI-AGING BENEFITS OF EXERCISE By Kim Goletz

ost people correlate exercise with weight loss, and it’s true that exercise can help you lose weight and maintain a healthy body composition. More importantly, though, exercise is a major contributor to your quality of life and important for your overall health. While we cannot stop or turn back time, exercise has anti-aging benefits that can help you feel and look younger.
ABSOLUTELIVING
Exercise can improve your sleep, boost your mood and decrease stress levels. For example, have you heard of the “runner’s high?” This is a real thing! When you exercise, your body releases endorphins. These endorphins help boost your mood, help relieve stress, and can reduce your risk of anxiety and depression. Regular exercise can help you feel more relaxed and can help improve your sleep. During sleep, your body repairs and restores itself, which can lessen the effects of aging. Exercising can also give you a sense of accomplishment and the satisfaction that you have done something good for yourself. This is empowering and good for the spirit. Regular exercise can improve your health, give your immune system a boost, and lower your risk of disease. These affects can help you live longer and improve your quality of life. Exercise lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cholesterol problems, dementia and some cancers. Exercise, particularly strength training, helps build strong, healthy muscles and improve bone health. This can
improve your strength and posture, help you appear younger, improve your balance, and decrease your risk of falls and fall-related injuries. There are some things to keep in mind in regards to exercise. Be sure to consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program. If you are unsure of how to exercise, ask your doctor or enlist the help of a trained professional, like a personal trainer. If you have never exercised before, be sure to start at a lower intensity and exercise for a shorter duration to prevent any injuries. Gradually increase the intensity and length of time until you reach the recommended amount of time and intensity of exercise. Overall, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends that adults 18-64 years old perform 150 total minutes each week of moderate intensity activity (a brisk walk), along with strength training that includes 2 or more days a week of muscle strengthening exercise. You can divide this throughout the entire week so it works best for you and your schedule. For example, you can

do a brisk walk for 30 minutes 5 days a week and perform strength training workouts for 30 minutes twice weekly. The important thing to remember is to be sure to incorporate aerobic activity and strength training into your routine, not one or the other. Most people feel overwhelmed when they try to incorporate exercise in their busy lifestyles. When you are trying to work exercise into your schedule, try to aim for no fewer than 2 times a week for 2-3 weeks. Once you are consistent with this schedule, then increase the amount of exercise in your schedule for another 2-3 weeks. These incremental changes allow you to create a habit and increase your chances of success. A lot of times, if you try to drastically change your routine, this can result in failure and frustration. You do not need to go out of your way or spend a lot of money to exercise. Going to a gym or having a lot of equipment at home is not necessary. You can utilize free resources for aerobic exercise (exercise apps, YouTube videos, parks, your home or your neighborhood) and perform body weight exercises for strength training. However, having some equipment at home or going to a gym will give you more variety with your routines. Exercise is not the fountain of youth, but it certainly has anti-aging benefits to help you feel and look younger. Making your health a priority and incorporating regular exercise into your lifestyle will do wonders for your mental and physical well-being. Be the healthiest YOU possible—mind, body, and spirit!

Chiropractic care is a lot more than it is “cracked” up to be. At Function First, they explain it like this:
Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that concentrates on disorders of the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on an individual’s general health. Proper clinical consultation, examination, and diagnostic evaluation allows the practitioner to effectively diagnose and render a proper plan of care. Both acute and chronic conditions from falls and accidents, to repetitive stress injuries, as well as metabolic disorders respond to treatment. A plan of care will encompass on one or all of the following: manipulation, spinal decompression, rehabilitative exercise, nutritional metabolic analysis, as well as lifestyle management. All treatment is tailored and unique to the needs of each patient. “We give people real, workable knowledge and help them build a lifestyle around their health,” explains Patty. The doctors bookend a trio of health-minded siblings—their middle-sister also works in the medical field, serving as a registered dietician in their home state of Wisconsin. Both were inspired at a young age by their neighbor, a chiropractor, who gave their sister regular spinal adjustments while she went through treatment for Crohn’s disease. They saw how expansive the benefits were for her and began to understand the importance of chiropractic care. Peggy began practice in New York with her husband Charles who is now deceased. It was in New York while attending Columbia University’s Integrative Medicine conference that she and her husband were inspired. After transitioning to Indianapolis, they opened one of the first integrative care centers. Patty joined them here first as an intern, eventually moving to her own office. Function First fuses over 60-years of combined chiropractic experience. “People don’t realize that life catches up with them, and before you know it they are running after symptoms rather than proactively developing their
health” says Peggy. Function First treats everything from simple sprains and strains to degenerative disc issues, including pre and post-surgical patients. They can often bridge general care received from a medical physician with complementary treatment protocols. “We find the best treatment cocktail for your condition that is going to keep you healthy and progressing,” explains Patty. Dr. Cris Vieira, owner of Indy Vital, often works in collaboration with Function First to maximize the performance and wellness of mutual patients. “At Indy Vital we feel that it is very important to partner with other top-notch professionals in the Indianapolis area that are also using natural healing methods and an integrative approach,” Vieira says. Vieira, Grabinski and Solano are all excited about the partnership they have developed, and they are proud to enhance patient treatment plans and aid in healing journeys together. Upon arrival at Function First I was pleased by the convenience of the commute, with a central location for all those living in Hamilton County. As I walked through the door I was immediately taken aback. I felt the healing energy from the colors of the rooms combined with the soft piano music played by the late Dr. Charles Solano. At every turn I saw results of successful cases, pictures of total body transformation, and words of encouragement from those who have changed their health. I witnessed proven results and was inspired at what could be accomplished in a short 44 days. They see many patients, some which have been with them for many years. They talk about people with health challenges such as chronic pain, fatigue, weight gain, metabolic issues, and stress, all causes of being run down and in a state of despair. Every story is different, but in the end, stress is often the common factor—sometimes it is actual physical stress, but other times it is emotional or post-traumatic, causing adrenal fatigue. They refer to it as “wired and tired.” "You are working through it, but you aren’t totally living. Your body is not functioning optimally and it starts to show up somewhere in your system,” says Patty. The doctors acknowledge these problems are often addressed with a chiropractic spinal adjustment. When undue pressure is applied to a nerve, our bodies don’t function at their optimal state of health. Other times, methods such as detoxification and nutritional guidance are needed.
ABSOLUTELIVING
One of the most popular and successful treatments at Function First is their metabolic program, a powerful personal nutrition program. “If you think this is a diet, then this isn’t for you,” says Peggy. “It’s a lifestyle change.” After a personal assessment, patients on the metabolic program receive custom nutritional support including fruit, vegetable, protein selections and proportions based on a variety of factors. The program helps to balance the system, which decreases inflammation and subsequently increases hydration and metabolism. Each week patients come in for a new body composition, which measures weight, BMI, visceral fat, cellular hydration, metabolic age and more. They monitor patients on a weekly basis. Patty shares that many people come to their office as a last resort, facing the dangers of obesity, and the metabolic program ends up being a lifeline for them. “It’s a purposeful program, and people get really inspired by it because they see and achieve success when all other programs have failed them.” No matter the treatment, Peggy and Patty offer compassionate care to all of their patients. They have found that this approach to the body as a whole is a valuable part of enhancing the quality of life for every person they treat. When asked whom they do treat (babies, kids, the elderly, for example), Peggy smiles, “We’ll see anyone with a spine.”

When the nervous system is not functioning properly, other systems, like the endocrine and immune systems, probably aren’t either. Defying Time: a Guide to Anti-Aging By Susan Salaz
Y
ou have probably heard the phrase, “You are only as young as you feel.” These words are true, but feeling young means something different to everyone. Whether you are seeking to cure your aches and pains, get better sleep, tone muscles and enhance flexibility, tighten aging skin, or improve mental cognition, consider some of the antiaging therapies here to support you on your self-care journey. Many relate anti-aging treatments only to skin care and augmentation, but it is so much more. It’s taking care of your whole self so that the benefits can be seen, and felt, in all of your body, not just your outer appearance. Looking good doesn’t mean much if you don’t feel good, and feeling good can’t flourish without proper mental health. By seeking treatments and therapies that target these issues both individually and in combination, you can almost turn back the hands of time, not only in your appearance, but also on your physical and mental well-being. Several local practices are offering a wide range of anti-aging therapies, and you can find a few highlighted here, so that when the time is right for you to consider anti-aging, you are able to easily decide what your needs are and where to find treatments that will fit best into your lifestyle.

mission of Indy Vital is to provide access to the most upto-date and effective medical equipment for assisting the body in repairing and healing itself from the inside out—all under one roof, in their state-of-the-art facility. If you want to reclaim your youth's look and feel, Indy Vital is the way to go. In addition to offering multiple top-notch therapies to treat pain and inflammation, they also provide advanced treatments that aid in the anti-aging process. Dr. Cris Vieira, the group’s medical director, tells his patients, "There is no magic pill or bullet; real anti-aging involves hard work, consistency, dedication, self-love and sacrifice. This is the reason I conceptualized, designed and created Indy Vital so that my clients would have a path to achieve their wellness goals." Dr. Vieira is a published doctor with vast experience in private and academic medicine. He has training and certification in a wide variety of disciplines, including hyperbaric oxygen medicine, clinical and interventional nephrology, intensive care and internal medicine. Indy Vital's ultimate goal is to make their clients live longer and better. But what makes Indy Vital and Dr. Vieira's recipe for energy, stamina and well-being so appealing? It’s the practice’s offering of modern medicine like HBOT, photobiomodulation, cryotherapy, laser therapy, IV-drip therapy, and much more. The
HBOT, considered the fountain of youth at Indy Vital, promotes cell repair, clears age spots, helps saggy skin and wrinkles, and restores poor collagen structure by increasing circulation to the skin. HBOT improves the look of the skin, enhances sleep quality and mental health, and provides an overall sense of well-being. Cryoskin is a non-invasive procedure that works by applying a cooling probe to the skin, killing fat cells around your waist permanently. Cryoskin takes only 28 minutes and leaves skin smooth and toned after one treatment. Hormones such as testosterone and estrogen begin to naturally decline in men and women in their 30s, when the first subtle signs of aging appear. Dr. Vieira doesn't think this is a coincidence, and he can help tailor an individualized and medication-free strategy at Indy Vital. The practice currently offers 14 different procedures designed to rejuvenate, heal, and slow down the clock. Indy Vital is a one-of-a-kind clinic located at: 5252 E 82nd St, Suite 300, Indianapolis, IN 46250 Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 9am-7pm and Saturday 10am-4pm.

rban Meditation is a sanctuary where clients come to relax, recharge and rejuvenate for 30 minutes a day. Its aim is to make the ancient healing art of meditation easy, fun, fast and accessible for everyone. The benefits of meditation are immediate—profoundly improving health and mood with the first session. Meditation is for anyone, but if you want to reduce the signs of aging inside and out in a relaxing way, it is a breath of fresh air. When we perceive stress, our bodies produce cortisol, the stress hormone, which has many negative effects. Meditation decreases cortisol, therefore helping to reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, reduce blood pressure, and break down toxins to speed the fat burning process. Reduced cortisol production even slows down the aging of the brain. Meditation also increases telomerase, an enzyme needed to delay diseases such as Alzheimer’s. At Urban Meditation, many curative aspects are combined for the optimal meditation experience. Infrared heat therapy, an imported lava floor, essential oils and crystal chakra oils, ambient lighting, and relaxation music not only enhance the half-hour, but also aid in anti-aging. With everything going on in the world right now, taking care of your health and well-being is important to live a happy, healthy and beautiful life. At Urban Meditation you can start, one breath at a time. Urban Meditation is located at 8487 Union Chapel Road. They offer 30-minute meditations every 45-minutes from 7am-7pm Monday through Saturday and noon-5 on Sundays. They also offer 1:1 customized meditation and counseling upon request.

ometimes the toll aging takes on the body, especially in outward appearance, can also have a negative affect on the mind and mood. The doctors at Hamilton Surgical Arts specialize in helping patients enhance their appearance through a wide variety of cosmetic treatments, both surgical and non-surgical, so they can look and feel better by reversing the appearance of aging.
After
Hamilton Surgical Arts and their attached medical spa, Happy Clinic Indy strive not only to get results that will keep you looking your best, but also to offer compassionate care in a friendly and safe environment. They have three locations, including a local office at 9660 East 146th Street in Noblesville.
Dr. Robert Jackson, who has been in practice for over 30 years and still gets excited about the advances in surgical arts, says that restoring volume, especially to the face, is essential to looking younger. Noninvasive treatments are a really rewarding part of the practice, and a good fit for those who don’t want to wait for surgical procedures. Botox and other injectable fillers produce immediate results and a more youthful appearance by restoring volume. Laser skin resurfacing is also an accessible method to rejuvenate skin on the face, neck, dÊcolletage and hands. Satisfying results can be seen after only one treatment, which is performed in the office in about 25 minutes. New modalities are available in body contouring and skin tightening treatments, such as Vaser-360 high definition body contouring, as well as less invasive surgical procedures to tighten skin for a sleek and slender appearance.

On-Trend Kitchen and Bath Upgrades Kitchens and bathrooms remain among the top picks for homeowners looking to upgrade because their functional contributions to the household can’t be overstated and they typically provide high return on investment. If you’re considering a renovation project for either in-demand space, consider some of these on-trend ideas from Doug King, CR, MBA, president of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.
ABSOLUTELIVING
Bigger fuctional spaces. Not only do many kitchen renovations result in added square footage, they also add practical features to make living and entertaining more comfortable and enjoyable. When it comes to physical space, a popular choice is removing or relocating walls to make the room larger. This added space could be instrumental in adding an island or peninsula for bar seating, which many homeowners view as a necessity when it comes to entertaining. Other features like icemakers, tall wine refrigerators and walk-in pantries are high on the frequent request list. Another growing trend is a kitchen designed for two, complete with a second full-size sink, dishwasher and microwave drawer, along with a larger island.
KITCHEN
Feature-rich appliances Appliance manufacturers are adding all kinds of bells and whistles, and those features are increasingly attractive to homeowners. Upper-end appliances are becoming more mainstream as homeowners discover features the more expensive models offer for ease of use and comfort. Larger freezer and column-style refrigerators are especially growing in popularity.
Clever Storage Making the most of storage space has always been a top desire, and homeowners are getting increasingly clever about how to maximize their cabinetry. Drawer organizers are in high demand, along with pullout wastebaskets that hide recycling bins within. Another popular approach is large base cabinets with pivoting shelving mechanisms for storing large items like mixers and other taller countertop appliances. Making use of every inch of space is common; even the toe-kick area for drawers are proving useful to hold smaller items or put kid-friendly essentials in easy reach.

BATHROOM
Spa-like setting. One long-term trend that is still in top demand for the master bath is design that mimics a serene spa. This plays out in cooler colors like white, blues and grays. Glass tiles are taking on a bigger role with many homeowners using them as artistic focal points in showers or opting for pebble-like tiles that spill from walls onto the floor. Upscale practicality. Little touches that may have once gone unnoticed are now trending as opportunities to add elements of style. For example, curb less showers with offset lineal drains are preferred to traditional centered circular versions. Similarly, homeowners are upping the ante with lighting such as fixtures integrated with fans and mirrors, and even below floating vanities for ambient light at night. One more place you might find lighting: on the bidet, which is also an increasingly hot addition in the master bath. A splash of tech. Whether it’s used to control smart features or simply add entertainment like TV or soothing music, technology has a permanent place on the list of bathroom trends. The available features make it easy to make a full escape from the daily grind of life.
