A-Level English: Translation. Taman (Thomas) Kasturi. Melaka International School
1 December 2021 I am an 11th-year student at Melaka International School studying A-level English. My first term project is a translation of a clerk’s journal entry from my paternal grandfather 18 generations removed, dated as Christians do, 21 October 1522. It involves the Melaka Port and the great fort built at the Port by the Portuguese on or around 1511-1513, entitled, “A Famosa.” A few remnants of this fort remain. My relative’s name was Tun Perak and he was one of several clerks for the harbormaster at the Port of Malacca and continued to have this occupation until he died in 1558. He was cautioned to keep records of how the Portuguese worked and Figure 1 Remnants of A Famosa how foreign [non-Malaccan] vessels interacted with the Portuguese. Perak was 20 years of age when writing this entry.
