Students in the Spring 2022 semester embarked on the first DSL integrated courses (Bio 100 and 181). Students went to lecture, then scheduled a VR experience before going to lab/ recitation to collaborate on solving problems presented in the experience. The Action Lab, with support from the User Experience Team and others, conducted an exploratory descriptive study on student performance and satisfaction in Bio 181 (see below).
To date, DSL has produced four VR experiences broken up in to three acts each (12 acts total), and the final two are in production for integration in Bio 100 and 182 in the spring. Over the summer the team piloted a remote streaming version of the experience for online students. DSL had a statistically significant positive effect on performance and satisfaction in BIO 181 in Spring 2022. • Students enjoyed the VR experiences and narrative arcs presented. • Students in the DSL lab sections were 1.7 times more likely to score between 90% and 100% on their assignments. • Historically marginalized students did better in DSL than in non-DSL lab sections.
• Students who felt more present in VR were more likely to feel more engaged in the course. In turn, students who were more engaged earned a higher total score on lab assignments.
