IMAGINING THE NEW UNIVERSITY CENTRAL LIBRARY IN 2050 I LAID OUT THREE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. WHERE CAN THE NEW ACADEMIC CENTRAL PLACE, EMBODY THE DIVERSIFICATION OF MCGILL DOWNTOWN CAMPUS ? WHAT SPACE CAN THE STUDENTS EXPECT FROM ITS UNIVERSITY COLLECTION CONTENTS IN A FUTURE WHERE UNLIMITED INFORMATION CAN IMMEDIATELY BE RETRIEVE ANYWHERE ? HOW THE ARCHITECTURE CAN OFFER LIBERTY OF BROWSING, SERENDIPITY AND PLEASURE OF INVESTIGATION LIKE ANY OTHER LIBRARY? THE FOLLOWING WORK IS MY INVESTIGATION INCLUDING THE ANSWERS I CAME UP WITH.

CAMPUS DISSECTIONS

Each of those four diagrams dissects a different element of the downtown campus. (A) The underground ways and pedestrians paths, (B) the students positions, (C) built structure and library branches and (D) the potential open spaces. On next page, a study of the circulation through the campus and the location of clubs and studentsâ€™ point.

FACULTY STUDY

The use of academic library in relation to each of the universityâ€™s faculties. The objective is to understand the habits of students, their frequency and their uses in order to better meet the real needs. On this diagram one can visualize in vivd red the students who uses most the library.

CAMPUS SITE PLAN PROPOSITION

The proposed implantation for the new academic and collection center of McGill University. This position is ideal because it restores a connexion between the upper and lower campus, offers a new direct and pleasant routes to navigate the campus and provides a new use of the McTavish reservoir nearby student needs.

LOWER CAMPUS ENTRANCE

The access between the lower and higher campus becomes possible through an underpass passing under the Doctor Penfield Street. By transforming McTavish Street into a landscaped pedestrian path and by making a seamless connection with the new library, this new way secures the connection between the two-campus ends simplifying the path for students and creating a new center for the largest campus.

SUBTERRANEAN OPENING

The underground transition leads to a zenithal opening, providing light and comfort and in the same time reveals the interior of the library. This strategy allows to invite students in the library without to be forced to enter.

PROGRAM DIAGRAMS

The new library’s program is divided into four main areas, the staff and administrative maintenance space shown in gray, the student’s space including access to the library’s collection in a controlled and monitored environment shown in red, the community area offering multiple services for the campus and finally a space of maintenance and utilities including circulations both shown in black. The study zone is in both collection and community area to offer a variety of space for interaction, productivity and creativity.

The vertical transition is condensed into a single point. This nucleus provides multiple views of the entire library and disseminates its content to all users. The principle is to optimize the ascension while respecting the limits of accessibility and control over the use of the collection.

From the initial shape obtained with the research, few areas conducive to the development of key elements where placed by themselves, such as auditoriums and large attractive room for studying and sharing using the elevation necessary to the course already established.

STORAGE SPACE

By studying the entire collection of McGill University, it was possible to approximate the adequate type of capacity required. The tower become a unifying symbol for its symbolic presence but also because of its inside where the rare collection is located. The bridge connection needing massive structure is an ideal location for a massive highdensity storage to dissimulate the structure but also to be part of the path and not put aside.

MONUMENTALISM

The entire interiors would try to reflect the collection quintessence and here, where the rare collection is kept, the space is evoking a sense of monumentality where a feeling of great knowledge is store and respected.
