We take in the sight of four or five cabins, a small health sports facility and an office building. Twenty-one other locations were to be visited and considered before we ended up choosing Haugland and the Red Cross.

Friendly voices and curious glances: «Come and sit down with us! Whereareyoufrom?» Twohundredstudentsfrom85countriesand their teachers, - living and learning together for two years Can international understanding be taught, or maybe it just has to be caught?

Thejourneyfrom1987tothecollegeopeningwaslong,bumpyand costly, but let´s look at the result When UWC Red Cross Nordic openedinSeptember1995themainaimwastopromotepeaceand international understanding through education in a troubled and dangerous world, within a peaceful and democratic Nordic environment. Another goal was to encourage an understanding of the challenges posed by climate change and threats to the environment Unfortunately, thereisnodoubtthattheseobjectives areatleastasrelevanttodayastheywere30yearsago

Has the college lived up to the ambitious vision of the founding fathers? A strict housemaster´s report might possibly read: “doing well, but room for improvement”. After two intensive years in this wonderful cloister-like environment, how much knowledge about Nordic culture, language and society will the students take away withthemwhentheyleave?

30 years - 30 stories

Onesharedjourney.

Since 1995, each year has brought a new cohort of students from around the world - living and learning together, shaping one another, and carrying this experienceintotheirfutures

Over these 30 years, 2903 students from 152 countries havegraduatedfromUWCRedCrossNordic, eachwitha uniquestoryofhowtheyarrivedhereandhowUWCRed CrossNordicleftitsmarkontheirlives

In 2025 we published our special anniversary edition, where we’ve captured one story from each cohort: snapshots of courage, curiosity and impact. This is a celebrationofthreedecades-andareminderthatevery story matters On the next pages you will find four of theseremarkablestories.

My teachers also meant a lot to me My philosophy teacher, Aseem, helped me process trauma through classical music and Western philosophy. Anna Garner and Maria Theresa were also important pillars of support. Maria Theresa was like a mother to me. OneoftheawesomeprogramsthatUWCRCNoffersis called the Outdoor Leadership program (ODL Program), and I was very pleased to be selected for it during my first year This entailed weekly exploration trips into the Norwegian wilderness, learning the basics of outdoor survival, cartography and first aid This program cemented my love for adventures outdoors. Having had some leadership experience at my previous school, I assumed I would be capable of handlingmostsituationsindependently,soIcameinto the program with a little bit of self-assurance. I had expected leisurely hikes and camps, perhaps the occasionalkayakorcanoetrip, buttheintensityofthe programreallycaughtmebysurprise.

Every weekend was an adventure, demanding planning,problem-solvingandperseverance Tobegin with, I felt out of my depth I was able to keep up physically, navigatingbeautifulterrain, hikingupwards of ten kilometres a day, but truth be told I would probably have wandedered right off a cliff had I not hadtherestoftheODLgrouptoguideandassistme. They showed me what it meant to be a member of a group, where, individually, nosinglepersoncouldhave overcome the challenges we faced, but together, we were able to share opinions and discuss ideas in reachingourgoal.

Myheritagelieswithtwocountriesofamazingnatural beauty, Australia and Switzerland, but Norway is just other-worldly UWC RCN sits slightly north of the largest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord, on the edge of a smallerfjordcalledtheDalsfjorden Fjords, formedby glacial movement and erosion, create sharp mountainsides and deep valleys, all of which give Norwayitscharacteristiccharm.

Theyalsoprovidesomeofthemostspectacularhiking routesintheworld ThroughODL,alongsideelevenof my peers, I had the opportunity to experience this scaleandbeautyfirst-handoverandover Iremember vividlyeverytripwehad, fromtheearlyautumnhikes toTaket, alocalmountain, toourwintercampingtrip, where I truly connected with some of the other members for the first time, creating friendships that still stand to this day. Every person in that ODL team has grown to be leader, and I was so pleased to be a partofit.Theytaughtmecompassion, resilience, and the ability to share workloads, never leaving anyone behind.

LookingbackatwhoIwasbeforearrivingatUWCRCN, I am almost unrecognisable I’ve grown in so many ways, discovering new passions and learning how to put myself outside my comfort zone But the real gift UWC RCN gave me was the friendships I now have Over two whole years, spending every day and every night in close proximity with the most incredible peopleIhaveevermet,Iamincrediblygratefulformy UWC RCN experience. This place taught me a lesson thatI’lltakewithmeintoeveryaspectofmylife, that it’s not about the destination, it’s not even about the journey, rather it’s about the people you meet along theway.

Educators from seven UWC schools participated in a unique training run by the Outward Bound Center for Peacebuilding and colleagues form UWC RCN The theme was Experiential Peacebuilding, which isaboutcreatingpeacefromwithin and letting it grow through communities Through theory, interactive exercises, and outdoor challenges, the course provided an immersive experience that placed participants in the role of both learnerandleader

Campus Upgrade

In2025,ourCollegecelebratedits30yearsanniversaryand most of our buildings have reached the same milestone Overtime, regularmaintenanceandsmallerrefurbishments have kept the buildings functional, but the use of the campus, and the expectations for a residential school has somewhatchangedinthepastthreedecades

This year, we renovated the library and the reading room and replaced lighting across campus We have also taken stepstomakethecampusmoreaccessibleforallstudents These may seem like small adjustments, but they are importantforstudentwell-beingandsafety InMarch2026, constructionwillbeginonanewchemistrylaboratory After 30years,asubstantialupgradeisneededtoensurethelab meetsmodernstandards

THE TUN CONCEPT

The “tun” is a traditional Norwegian farmyard layout, where buildingswithdifferentfunctionsarearrangedaroundashared central space. Located in the rural West coast, the original campus buildings were planned following this tradition, respecting local styles, fitting naturally into the landscape, and using local materials This design encourages interaction, creates a sense of community, and makes the area both functional and welcoming, leaving plenty of green space between the buildings In new developments, we continue to respectthisarchitecturaltradition
