Come on out for an afternoon concert by acclaimed guitarist Edgar Cruz. If you’ve heard him before you know how he can make a guitar sing. He can play just about any song you request, you can’t stump him easily. So grab your friends and neighbors and join us for some music by Edgar Cruz.

Those who have witnessed Cruz’s performance immediately become entranced at the precision, speed and complexity with which his fingers strike the strings of his guitar to create a symphony of sound unusual to just one instrument. Cruz offers an incredible live repertoire of the greatest hits of the guitar, such as “Malagueña,” “Classical Gas,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “In the Mood,” “Dueling Banjos,” “Hotel California,” a classical medley, Latin favorites, originals and medleys on the fly.

DO YOU HAVE HEARING ISSUES? If you find it hard to hear other people’s conversations and they don’t know that you are have problems, we have a solution that might help you and them.

We recently acquired stickers of an ear as shown to the left that can easily be added to your name tag. If you would like others to know that you have hearing issues and that they need to speak louder to you, go by Elizabeth Newell’s office to get one for your tag.

COFFEE CHAT WITH THE CEO Enjoy coffee with the CEO Thursday, OCTOBER 18th starting at 10:00 am in the Coffee Lounge. These coffees are being held every Thursday to give residents an opportunity to chat with the CEO in an informal setting.

VISUAL ARTS & CRAFTS AT EPWORTH ART CORNER (Second Floor above the Library) We are very fortunate to have the space for all to participate in needle work, crafts and arts of all mediums (oil, acrylics, water, etc.).

We gather together as a group on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:00 pm and on Fridays at 10:00 am. If you would like to learn to do anything listed above, please let us know. There are plenty of residents who would love to help you learn!

INFANT CRISIS SERVICES COLLECTION FROM NOVEMBER 21ST THROUGH NOVEMBER 25TH Residents of Epworth Villa have an opportunity to truly make a difference in the life of an infant and his or her family. The Infant Crisis Services Organization assists parents of newborn infants through children of 4 years.

Residents can either contribute to this organization by doing a bit of shopping for or by writing a check in any amount to the organization. Items needed are bottles, clothing, toys, bibs, socks, sippy cups or whatever else a newborn or toddler might need. If you write check, place it in a sealed envelope and put it in mail box #10B. All checks and items collected will be taken to the Infant Crisis Services office the last week of November.

SUNDAY SCHOOL SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21st BRILL CHAPEL 9:30 AM Genesis 18:9-15; 21:1-7 SLOW AND STEADY “The Tortoise and the Hare” is a fable attributed to the Greek sage Aesop (believed to have lived about 600 BC). In this tale an arrogant rabbit berates a tortoise for being so slow. Embarrassed, the tortoise finally, challenges the hare to a race. The rabbit is so confident that he pauses in the course to allow the slow tortoise to catch up so he will be forced to see the hare win.

The hare falls asleep, however, and during his nap the plodding tortoise passes him and crosses the finish line first. While the story carries much wisdom. the moral is communicated in the still-famous punch line, “Slow and steady wins the race.”

“The Tortoise and the Hare” is still a popular subject of modern children's books.

Perhaps the most significant lesson speaks to the value of patience. Though some tasks take a long time, the solution is to not give up in the face of obstacles, but rather to pace oneself and keep moving forward.

This lesson emphasizes the value of, and the need for, a “slow and steady” approach to faith. Whether we like it or not, God moves on his own timetable toward fulfillment of his plans. Sometimes the pace seems to be frustratingly slow as we wait for God to act.

And very often, the finish line seems so far ahead that we can't even see where we are going. Real faith calls us to keep moving steadily forward in the knowledge the victory will come if we don't give up.

Come early to hear our own Fretta Moore bless us with her piano mastery of the hymns at 9:15am. Burrell McNaught will lead this lesson.

STANDING COMMITTEE SIGN-UP for 2019 A new procedure for the make-up of the Standing Committees was approved by the Resident Association for a trial period in 2019. The five committees are: Activities Food Library Religious Life Wellness The procedure will provide an opportunity for any resident interested in serving on one or more of the committees to do so. If you have not already signed up, the sign-up notebook is located on the concierge desk by the count-me-in book. It will be there until the end of October.

DAY TRIP TO WEATHERFORD, OK STAFFORD AIR & SPACE MUSEUM TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23RD LEAVE @ 9:30 AM, RETURN @ APPROXIMATLEY 4:00 PM On Tuesday, October 23rd we will jump on a Village Tour bus and head west to the Stafford Air & Space Museum. We will stop for lunch at Lucille’s on Route 66 when we get there and then head over to the museum for a tour. There is still time to go even if you have not already signed up. You may do so in the COUNT ME IN book.

At this point the cost per person, which includes museum admission and bus, will be $53.00. If more people sign up before the trip, the cost per person will go down. The final cost will be billed to your Epworth Villa Account. Each resident pays for their own lunch.

THE BUS HAS BEEN RESERVED!! If you cancel anytime before the trip, you are responsible for finding someone to take your place or you will be charged.

NEW VIEW OKLAHOMA WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24TH 10:30 AM WOODWORTH ROOM Do you need help with you IPhone, IPad or learning about the built in features of your Android phone? DO you have low vision issues? Is you answered yes to any of these things, then you need to attend this session with NewView Oklahoma. They will show you everything you need to know about using your devices and more.

NewView Oklahoma, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to empower blind and vision impaired individuals to achieve their maximum potential through rehabilitation, employment, and community outreach.

NewView Oklahoma is the state's leading employer of individuals who are blind and visually impaired, providing nearly 150 jobs through in-house manufacturing positions, administrative, management, rehabilitation professionals and a growing number of service contracts.

HEARTS FOR HEARING PRESENTATION FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26TH 10:30 AM COFFEE LOUNGE The organization provides auditory-verbal therapy with one of the largest teams of Listening and Spoken Language Specialists in the region. They also are one of the largest providers of cochlear implant services in the region.

Collaborative Care - Audiologists provide comprehensive evaluations and customized fitting of appropriate technology. Speech-language pathologists, also certified as Listening and Spoken Language Specialists, work with patients and their families. The unique model of audiologists working closely with listening and spoken language specialists is internationally recognized for its remarkable outcomes.

History of Caring—Hearts for Hearing was established in 2003 to provide funding for the initial set of hearing aids for children with hearing loss in Oklahoma. In 2007, the mission was expanded to become a comprehensive hearing health program for both children and adults, offering auditory-verbal therapy. In 2013, to meet the growing demand for adult hearing healthcare, the mission expanded again to open a clinic specifically designed for adults.

HOLIDAY GIFT CAMPAIGN IS UNDERWAY The conversation at a recent Holiday Gift Committee meeting centered around how very much we appreciate the staff here at Epworth and how very much we want them to know that they are valued employees. Specifically mentioned were the housekeepers who go to the cottages in all kinds of weather and upon arrival do their work efficiently and with a smile! Also discussed was the wait staff. Often before we even place our orders our drinks are served because they not only know our names, but our preferred drinks as well. It's sort of like being a regular at Cheers, the Boston bar made famous in an old TV show!

We also discussed the hope that if the residents knew more about our staff, they may be encouraged to be more generous in this one time opportunity to express our gratitude with a tangible gift to the Holiday Gift Fund.

Michele has worked as the receptionist here for seven years. Although she is on the rolls of the Kaw tribe, she was adopted by a family of Ukranian and German heritage. She is an only child and visits her 85 year old mother often. Michele went to college on a soft ball scholarship right out of high school. She says that although she got a great education, she did not receive a degree until several years later. In the meantime, she worked as a DJ and for Billboard Magazine She later received an associate degree from Rose State and a degree from OU in Liberal Arts. Michele took advantage of the scholarship offered by Epworth and completed a Master's degree in Gerontology from UCO. She is almost 100% recovered from the surgery that took her on medical leave for five weeks not long ago. Michele has always written a thank you note upon receiving the holiday gift. She says she is blessed and honored to work here and the best thing about her job is the residents.

SKYLINE URBAN MINISTRIES CLOTHING DRIVE OCTOBER (WEDNESDAY) 24th, (THURSDAY) 25th & (FRIDAY) 26th As you replace summer clothes to winter clothes in your closets remember the Clothing Drive coming October 24, 25 & 26. Fall/winter, clean and wearable items are needed at this time, especially winter coats.

Containers will be placed on the floor lounges beginning October 24. Forms for tax deduction will be placed near the donation container.

The message on Skyline's website states: "Our focus is on those who live in the shadow and on those who live in poverty & need throughout our state." They work in tandem with the local United Methodist Churches, United Way and the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma providing groceries, meals, clothing and eye exams to "Oklahoma's struggling with resources." BINGO WITH BILL FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26TH 7:15 PM REDBUD ROOM

SUNDAY BRUNCH IN THE REDBUD ROOM OCTOBER 28TH 11:00 AM—1:30 PM On October 28th, Dining Services will be serving the Sunday meal service in the Redbud Room. The Bistro will be closed for the day.

The Redbud Room will be open from 11:00 am-1:30 pm, with take-out meals available. You need to call the take-out line no later than 10:30 am. Your meal will be available for pickup or delivery (if sick only) at 1:15 pm. We will also accept walk-ins for take out in this venue. The resident must complete a menu form and pick up his or her order @ 1:15pm.

We will be serving a plated meal with a starter and dessert. Please remember that the Epworth Villa dress code will be enforced on this day. All assisted devices will be placed in the garage and alcohol will not be allowed in this venue on Sunday. The menu is as follows.

QUAIL SPRINGS UMC EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TO VISIT TO SING AND TRICK OR TREAT WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31ST STARTING @ 10:00 AM IN THE COFFEE SHOP Come on down to the Coffee Shop on Wednesday, October 31st at 10:00 am to hear these adorable 3 & 4 year olds as they share with us their songs and smiles. They will also be wearing their Halloween costumes in anticipation of ’Trick or Treating’ with us after they sing. Any residents who would like to bring treats to share with the kids are welcome to do so.

After the kids sing in the Coffee Shop they will be heading to Assisted Living and the Neighborhood Center to share their songs and smiles with the residents of those areas.

A BIG THANK YOU TO CHRIS STETTNISCH, Director of Dining Services and his kitchen staff for their wonderful work in preparing refreshments for the Women’s Coffee where I presented the program last Wednesday.

This was a special order that was coordinated with the program and they did a beautiful job of it.
