Donald Ryan has been playing the piano since he was three years old in his birthplace, Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies, and while still in his early teens was the pianist for a weekly, live radio program that reached a major portion of the islands. He has earned music degrees from Oral Roberts University and The University of Tulsa and is on the music faculty at his alma mater, ORU. A commanding and dynamic pianist, Donald Ryan has been called “a music kaleidoscope, sparkling at everything he plays.” This "everything" encompasses the arenas of classical, religious/inspirational, and jazz. His virtuosity and amazing gift of improvisation have delighted audiences throughout the U. S. Color psychology is the study of how colors affect human behavior, mood, or physiological processes. Colors are thought to influence our buying choices, our feelings, and even our memories. Ideas related to color psychology are heavily implemented in the areas of marketing and design. Companies choose colors that they believe will motivate customers to buy their products and improve brand awareness. Colors have even been used in color therapy techniques to treat various diseases. With the new fad of “adult coloring” that some of us enjoy, Beth’s presentation is very timely! Come early and enjoy chatting with your friends and neighbors!

SUNDAY SCHOOL SUNDAY, MAY 13TH BRILL CHAPEL 9:30 AM MARKING TIME BY GOD'S CALENDAR Leviticus 2:14, 24:9-14, 22 Cultures have different ways and traditions of marking time. In contemporary Western culture, January 1 is significant. It serves the official purpose of reminding people that the “holiday season� is over.

The months of November and December are the important months in the holiday season, especially for the retail industry, unofficial special days such as Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) and Cyber Monday, three days later, have become cultural staples for bargain hunters. But modern culture changes quickly. Recent years have seen Brown Thursday added to the unofficial calendar of retail merchandising.

Cultures not only mark time differently with regard to specific calendar dates but also in terms of seasons. Some cultures have only two seasons: rainy and dry. For those of us who experience four seasons, spring is the season of new life, with Easter a fitting holiday in that regard as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.

For the ancient Israelites, the first and seventh months were particularly important. As agrarian people, their existence was closely tied to their crops. Their major celebrations revolved around gratitude to God for what he had done for them in the past and how he was sustaining them in the present. This lesson focuses on one such celebration.

Nancy Zumwalt will teach this interesting lesson. Come early to hear and enjoy Fretta Moore at the piano at 9:15 am.

THE HISTORY OF “MOTHERS DAY” The earliest history of Mothers’ Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. It may be noted that ceremonies in honor of Cybele began some 250 years before Christ was born.

The more recent history of Mothers’ Day dates back to the 1600s in England. Here a Mothering Sunday was celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter) to honor mothers. After a prayer service in church to honor the Virgin Mary, children brought gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their own mothers.

On this occasion, servants, apprentices and other employees who worked outside of their homes were encouraged by their employers to visit their mothers and honor them.

Traditionally children brought with them gifts and a special fruit cake or fruit-filled pastry called a simnel. Yugoslavs and people in other nations have observed similar days.

The idea of an official celebration of Mothers’ Day in the US was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe in 1872. An activist, writer and poet Julia shot to fame with her famous Civil War song, "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Julia Ward Howe suggested that June 2 be annually celebrated as Mothers’ Day and should be dedicated to peace. She wrote a passionate appeal to women and urged them to rise against war in her famous Mothers’ Day Proclamation, written in Boston in 1870. She also initiated a Mothers' Peace Day observance on the second Sunday in June in Boston and held the meeting for a number of years. Julia tirelessly championed the cause of an official celebration of Mothers’ Day and declaration of official holiday on the day.

The custom of celebrating Mothering Sunday in England and Mother’s Day in the U.S. had died out almost completely by the 19th century even though President Woodrow Wilson had signed a bill recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday in the U.S. on May 9, 1914. But the day began to be celebrated again after World War II when American soldiers began returning from the war.

Anna Jarvis is recognized as the Founder of Mothers’ Day in US. Though Anna Jarvis never married and never had kids, she is also known as the Mother of Mothers’ Day, an apt title for the lady who worked hard to bestow honor on all mothers everywhere. Today Mothers’ Day is celebrated in several countries around the world including US, UK, India, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Mexico, Canada, China, Japan and Belgium.

EASTERTIDE PROGRAM “WANT TO WALK ON WATER?” Everyone is invited to an eight-week Eastertide study led by Burrel McNaught using selected chapters from his book, The Secret to Walking on Water. Each session will consist of a brief introduction—followed by a guided discussion.

We have lowered the prices on all nine of our chocolate bars! Last year we were ranked #18 of 6,015 interfaith Fair Trade sellers in the U.S. Although all the profits go to charity, we decided that it is better to sell more (hopefully) bars at a lower price so more customers can enjoy them. Same great quality, now just $3.00 a bar!

OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY MUSICIANS MONDAY, MAY 14TH 2:00 PM BRILL CHAPEL Four percussion students will play marimba, Clayton Garner, Jackie Partida, Emily Roper, and Maya Johnson: Emily Roper is a Junior Percussion Performance Major and the Performance Booking Manager for the Wanda L. Bass School of Music. Originally from Midwest City, OK but attended high school in Shawnee, OK. Maya Johnson is an Oklahoma native currently studying at Oklahoma City University.

She is pursuing degrees in Music Education and Percussion Performance with plans to graduate in 2019. Maya has been a percussionist for 8 years and still thoroughly enjoys every performance opportunity.

INQUIRING MINDS FRENCH IMPRESSIONIST PART 2 MONDAY, MAY 14th 7:14 PM WELLNESS CENTER MODERATOR: FRANS VANANTWERPEN In this second presentation of the French Impressionists, the life and paintings of one of the few female Impressionists, Berthe Morisot, is being presented.

She was born into an affluent bourgeois family, and in these days it was commonplace for daughters of bourgeois families to receive art education. Her work was selected for six subsequent government-sponsored Salon exhibitions until, in 1874, she joined the "rejected" Impressionists in the first of their own exhibitions.

In this presentation, also the effect of the French/German war of 1870 on the lives of the Impressionists is being discussed.

SKYLINE CLOTHING DRIVE MAY 16th, 17th, & 18th As you are putting winter clothes away and getting spring/ summer clothes out please remember that our Skyline Urban Ministry clothing drive is coming up. It will be held May 16, 17 & 18. Epworth residents have supported this ministry for many years and our contributions are so important and appreciated. We historically have a drive in the spring and the fall. This time we will want only good clean wearable spring/summer clothing. Skyline has told us that they prefer not getting winter clothing now because their storage space is limited. By supporting this ministry we are helping less fortunate persons obtain clothing they can be proud to wear and assisting Skyline to fulfill their mission to "impact lives and empower those in need."

Collection boxes will be placed in each residential floor's lounge on the dates indicated. For the first time we are requesting that your donations be placed in plastic bags before being placed in the collection box. This assists those that are collecting clothing from your floor's donation box and placing them in the central collection area as well as making the pick up process by Skyline Urban Ministries less difficult.

The ladies coming are Jennifer Teel, Beth Adele, and Jessica Martens. Jennifer and Jessica are cast as leads this summer in Freaky Friday and Mamma Mia! respectively; and, Beth will sing a song from Hello, Dolly!

At the conclusion of the program, Rachael and Beth will be there to talk a little about Lyric's shows and answer any questions the audience may have. The program will last about 30 minutes, give or take. Each number will be introduced with a little about the song's background.

SWAN ESCAPADES STARRING OWN & PHYLLIS Owen and Phyllis have been an ornery pair since arriving at Epworth Villa.

Epworth Villa painter and "swan whisperer" Marla Moore, has had her hands full with Owen and Phyllis. The swans arrived last October and are about a year old. Marla says they are just curious and don't mean to get themselves into trouble. She says they are just "being kids."

Residents and fellow employees are grateful that Marla has a heart for these birds. She can be seen checking on them throughout the day and feeding them every morning.

Marla said that she was happy for the help from the Oklahoma City Fire Department.
