The History Of Flag Day The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14th (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14th as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'.

On June 14, 1889, George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned appropriate ceremonies for the children of his school, and his idea of observing Flag Day was later adopted by the State Board of Education of New York. On June 14, 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration, and on June 14 of the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution, celebrated Flag Day. The Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America on April 25, 1893 adopted a resolution requesting the mayor of Philadelphia and all others in authority and all private citizens to display the Flag on June 14th. It was recommend that thereafter the day be known as 'Flag Day', and on that day, school children be assembled for appropriate exercises, with each child being given a small Flag.

In 1894, the governor of New York directed that on June 14 the Flag be displayed on all public buildings. With BJ Cigrand and Leroy Van Horn as the moving spirits, the Illinois organization, known as the American Flag Day Association, was organized for the purpose of promoting the holding of Flag Day exercises. On June 14th, 1894, under the auspices of this association, the first general public school children's celebration of Flag Day in Chicago was held with more than 300,000 children participating.

Adults, too, participated in patriotic programs. Franklin K. Lane, Secretary of the Interior, delivered a 1914 Flag Day address in which he repeated words he said the flag had spoken to him that morning: "I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself."

Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. 3

THE HISTORY OF FATHER’S DAY IN THE UNITED STATES There are two stories of when the first Father’s Day was celebrated. According to some accounts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington State on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise (she would probably be displeased that Mother’s Day still gets the lion’s share of attention).

Sonora’s dad was quite a man. William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the six children by himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her appreciation for all the hard work and love William gave to her and her siblings, Sonora thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him.

She initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father’s death to be the designated day to celebrate Father’s Day, but due to some bad planning, the celebration in Spokane, Washington was deferred to the third Sunday in June.

The other story of the first Father’s Day in America happened all the way on the other side of the country in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men.

While Father’s Day was celebrated locally in several communities across the country, unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday began almost immediately. William Jennings Bryant was one of its staunchest proponents. In 1924, President Calvin “Silent Cal” Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. But no official action was taken.

In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972,

SUNDAY SCHOOL SUNDAY, JUNE 17TH BRILL CHAPEL 9:30 AM JUSTICE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT Matthew 15:1-9 Public figures sometimes find themselves defending controversial or offensive statements.

Often their defense is to say, “I was misquoted.” Of course, our experience with the media shows that they are in some cases right.

We who are not celebrities know the frustration of being misquoted. Parents hear their children twist their words to use against them. Angry spouses sometimes do the same.

On the job, a worker claims to be following instruction while the boss insists that those instructions were misunderstood. Misquoting, misunderstandings, misremembering, or just ignoring other people's word is a common cause of conflict.

When we are misquoted and misunderstood, we want to shout, “That's not what I meant, and you should know that!” We value our words and our integrity as well. We become exasperated when we are misunderstood, and we become discouraged at the hard feelings that often follow.

God experiences misunderstanding as well. Some of the Bible's sternest messages are directed at those who have received God's Word but have misunderstood and misapplied them. They claim devotion to God, but their acts reveal more interest in their own will than in his.

This week's lesson features one of God's stern messages. We study it to ensure that we do not resemble the group against which it was originally directed. Come early (9:15) to hear our own Fretta Moore bless us with her piano artistry. Burrel McNaught will teach this lesson.

Epworth Villa will be honoring caregivers for those who are affected by Alzheimer’s. During this day we encourage all of our residents and staff to be active and show support for our amazing caregivers.

 There will be a resident vs. staff competition to see who can exercise the most on the Nu-Step and exercise bike.  Please contact Blaine to secure your spot in the competition.  If you feel led to help advance the fight against Alzheimer’s disease there will be donation stations available.  For more information please call 486-1352.

HISTORICAL PERFORMANCE OF LUCY TAYIAH EADS ‘CHIEF LUCY OF THE KAW INDIANS’ AS PORTRAYED BY HER GRAND-DAUGHTER PAULINE SHARP FRIDAY, JUNE 22ND 2:00 PM GRAND BALLROOM Lucy Tayiah Eads was born in 1888 in a tipi on the banks of Little Beaver Creek in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). She was the adopted daughter of Chief Wah-Shun-Gah who served as principal chief of the Kanza from 1885 to 1908. Lucy attended Haskell Indian School from 1901 to 1908. In 1922 Lucy was elected Chief of the Kaw tribe – the first woman Chief of the Kaw. She served until 1934.

Pauline Sharp is a citizen of Kaw Nation and past vice-president of the Kaw Nation Cultural Committee. She has also served on the Board of Trustees of the Mid-American All-Indian Center in Wichita, KS. Sharp has researched and studied the history and culture of the Kanza People, from whom the State of Kansas took its name. She tells the story of the Kanza (Kaw) people through the character of her grandmother, Lucy Tayiah Eads. Sharp is a juried member of the Kansas Alliance of Professional Historical Performers and lives in Wichita, Kansas with her husband, Doug Sharp.

NEEDLE WORK We meet on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm in the South Classroom. Those who love to crochet, knit, needle point and so on are invited to join us.

Don’t forget the pool rules regarding visitors: All guests and family members (adults and children) must sign in and be accompanied and supervised by a resident. Residents are responsible for the actions of their guest(s) and the resident assumes financial and personal responsibility for any damage done.

A waiver of liability must be signed and a pool pass picked up at the front desk before any guests or family members may use the pool.
