COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PRESENTS THE COVENANT CHAMBER QUARTET FRIDAY, AUGUST 17TH 7:00 PM GRAND BALLROOM

The Quartet is the resident performing group of Covenant Presbyterian Church and is made up of members from the Covenant Chamber Orchestra. They were founded during the Fall of 2017 by Orlando Ramirez, Orchestra Assistant.

The program they will perform at Epworth will be a mix of sacred music, pop and Broadway selections and classical works. Some of the composers included are Mendelssohn, Haydn, Mozart and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Two great love songs featured – one from the 60’s and one current – are “Unchained Melody” made popular by the Righteous Brothers and “All I Ask of You”, one of the main songs from THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Just think, no more lugging your pet somewhere to trim their nails or make them ‘pretty’. Now you can stay home and let the groomers come to you.

The company we have found is Furst Class Canine. The first time they will be here is Thursday, August 16th starting at 9:00 am. If you are interested in taking advantage of this service and having them groom your pet on August 16th, please sign up in the ’Count Me In’ book.

Do you have trouble walking your dog or just need someone occasionally? How about when you leave town? Do you need someone to look in on your dog or maybe give him a place to stay while you are away? We now have two dog walkers who are willing and able to service your needs when you need them.

Epworth Market Alert!

Residents, we have a problem. The Market needs more substitute volunteers. Presently, we have a group of faithful ladies who volunteer four hours of their time (two hours twice a month) and have been doing it for years. However, there are times when we need a sub, such as, when there are extra days in a month or a regular volunteer is ill, has an appointment or is out of town. In order to continue to keep our Market open five days a week, we need to enlarge our sub pool. If you feel you can volunteer an occasional couple of hours a month (1-3PM), please contact Maggie at 405-751-9382. Thank you.

LOVING AND JUST BEHAVIOR

The Wrong Seems Strong It is easy to despair over the prevalence of evil. One result of expanded media coverage is that we seem to get extensive coverage of an endless parade of tragedies from all over the world. The stories range from cruelty to kittens to beheadings of Christians. Media outlets never seem to tire of presenting the latest in human depravity, so much so that we can become numb to its significance.

While we might imagine we have entered a new age of tragedy, the truth is that we have been in it for a long time. Maltbie Babcock, a nineteenth century minister, knew this all too well. He and his wife, Katherine, had two sons, but both died as infants. Babcock found solace in taking long walks in nature and in writing poetry. These two came together in a public way when one of his poems was published and set to music after his death. The combination became the beloved hymn “This Is My Father's World.” Often recognized for its appreciation of God's creation, the lyrics also draw an important conclusion in stating “that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.” Babcock encourages us not to sink into despair.

We only escape the results of sin and evil when we get to Heaven. Even so, the Apostle Paul, like Babcock, encourages us not to sink into despair. Evil will not prevail in the end. In our lesson this week, we see Paul address the problem of evil in a direct and practical manner.

REMINDERS ABOUT THE POOL: We are approaching the time when grandkids and family come to visit and swim in the pool. Don’t forget the pool rules regarding visitors: All guests and family members (adults and children) must sign in and be accompanied and supervised by a resident. Residents are responsible for the actions of their guest(s) and the resident assumes financial and personal responsibility for any damage done.

A waiver of liability must be signed and a pool pass picked up at the front desk before any guests or family members may use the pool.

LINE DANCING 101 TUESDAYS IN AUGUST FROM 9:30—10:00 AM WELLNESS STUDIO Come learn the basic steps of line dancing and have some FUN too!! The 101 class will started on August 7th and run every Tuesday in August.

NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! The class is open to both men and women. So come give it a try.

EPWORTH TO HOST AARP DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE THURSDAY, AUGUST 23RD 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM (WITH 1 HOUR OFF FOR LUNCH) WOODWORTH ROOM Cost is $15.00 for AARP members and $20.00 for non-members. If you are interested in attending this class, contact Susan to put your name on the list. This class is open to the outside public, so get your name on the list TODAY if you want to attend. Taking the course will give you a discount on your car insurance. You will pay the instructor the day of the class.

SUNDAY BRUNCH IN THE REDBUD ROOM AUGUST 26TH 11:00 AM—1:30 PM On August 26th, Dining Services will be serving the Sunday meal service in the Redbud Room. The Bistro will be closed for the day.

The Redbud Room will be open from 11:00 am-1:30 pm, with take-out meals available.

You need to call the take-out line no later than 10:30 am. Your meal will be available for pickup or delivery (if sick only) at 1:15 pm. We will also accept walk-ins for take out in this venue. The resident must complete a menu form and pick up his or her order @ 1:15pm.

The menu is being developed and will be published as soon as it is completed with prices listed. We will be serving a plated meal with a starter and dessert. Please remember that the Epworth Villa dress code will be enforced on this day. All assisted devices will be placed in the garage and alcohol will not be allowed in this venue on Sunday.

VISUAL ARTS AT EPWORTH ART CORNER (Second Floor above the Library) We wish to invite all new and current residents to meetings on Tuesday, August 28th at 2:00 pm OR Thursday, August 30th at 2:00 pm to see what everyone is interested in doing. The following opportunities are available: oils, acrylics, water color, coloring books, Art Nouveau and Other crafts. We have supplies available for your use.

We are planning for everyone to make crafts that they can take home. Christmas is coming soon so please come have fun and socialize with the group. This is completely a volunteer creative session without the aid of a teacher, however, if you have a talent you would like to share with the group it would be very welcome.

NEEDLE WORK GROUP (South Classroom next to the Art Corner) There are several residents that crochet, knit, needle point, etc. There is a donated supply of yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks for your use.

Please join us on ONE of the above dates to set plans in motion to start back on a regular schedule in September.

PET POLICY REMINDER In the resident handbook the Pet Policy addresses the responsibilities of being a pet owner. The most frequently reviewed topics are waste removal, noise and pets inside the building. The policy addresses these topics in the following manner: 1) pet waste must be immediately picked up and disposed of in a sanitary manner; 2) pet owners are responsible for insuring that the rights of other residents to peace and quiet, health, and/or safety are not infringed upon or diminished by pet noise, odors, wastes or other nuisances and, 3) pets should not be allowed to “roam” but should be on their way outside or on their way back to the owner’s apartment at the nearest exit to the apartment. Pets must be on a leash at all times both inside and outside. A complete listing of pet owner responsibilities in the resident handbook.
