In Memory
Bryanne and Leah Since the last Downtown Edmond Arts Festival, we have lost two of its most active supporters, Bryanne Wallace and Leah Kessler. We could not let this year’s festival take place without remembering and thanking these two for their incredible contributions in making our festival such a success over the years. --Ray Hibbard, Edmond Life and Leisure publisher
Bryanne Wallace
Bryanne was the owner of Fashion Boutique and longtime board member of the Downtown Edmond Business Association (DEBA). If you have attended and enjoyed the Edmond Arts Festival, you have her to thank for thousands of volunteer hours growing the festival to be so large and successful. She was a wonderful lady, and her leadership will be missed all over Edmond. Bryanne served as the chair of the arts festival for 15 years. She volunteered for the Arts Festival since 1999. It is amazing to me how she kept it all straight. Bryanne along with other committee members put in an incredible amount of volunteer hours while running their small businesses at the same time. Working on the arts festival was a year-long job for her. Planning begins as soon as the previous festival ends with wrap-up meetings, brainstorming new ideas and reviewing feedback from artists, attendees, and committee members. During the festival, she worked 18 hours a day, arriving at 5 a.m. to relieve security and staying until after 11 p.m. “I don’t think about how much time it takes me, I just do whatever it takes to get it done,” Bryanne said. “I love working with the artists and seeing all the people and families enjoying themselves.” Bryanne was also a member of the Urban Board. She owned Fashion Boutique since 2001 and was married to her husband Phil for over 30 years. Bryanne made sure Phil was a good arts festival volunteer as well. “I am just passionate about Downtown Edmond, and I love what it has become. We are constantly working to make it better and it takes everyone working together,” Bryanne said. “I can remember when it was just six booths,” she once said and added “It has gone from mostly a craft show to a juried art show with more than 130 artists.” I always felt that I was one of her nephews. I would get a call from “Aunt” Bryanne that would start, “You need to call someone.” I learned that meant she was on the trail of righting a wrong and I was getting ready to be drafted as her partner in solving the issue. It was a role I delighted in. Our friend and leader here in downtown Edmond will be missed from this festival and in the future but she will not be forgotten.
Leah Kessler
Leah was Edmond’s professional event and festival icon organizing the Edmond Arts Festival. DEBA Marketing Manager, Leah knew more about putting one of these things on than anyone I know. The woman could do it in her sleep. She and husband Carl were longtime volunteers in Edmond. Leah did not always get the recognition she deserved, and she probably preferred it that way. She was the one who is behind the curtain making sure everything runs smooth. I just cannot put in words the amount of information I learned from Leah over the years. Leah and Carl loved to play golf and they were both darn good. I would have them represent Edmond Life & Leisure in different charity tournaments in town. It did not take more than a couple of holes for the players they were matched with to figure out we had sent a couple of ringers. Leah’s play was exceptional, and she could play with the best of them. When it came to community service, Carl would tell you he is a tag along. Leah called me her son. She has a terrific son and daughter but when she would want to make a point or get after me, she would start the conversation, “Now listen son.” I miss that because Leah and I were terrific friends and she helped me in so many ways over the years. It just breaks my heart but there are so many good memories of the projects we worked together including the Downtown Edmond Arts Festival. Leah taught so many of us that we do not have problems. She would say that we had challenges and always came forth with a suggested solution. I learned how to tell what degree of a challenge was before us. If it were a small challenge, she would come to my office and say, “Son, we have a bit of a challenge.” If she came in the office, shut the door, plopped down in the chair, and said, “Son, boy do we have a challenge,” then I knew it was going to be a big one. We dealt with many challenges together over the years and I cannot think of anyone I would have rather had by my side. Leah was simply the best. The entire community loved her and her magnificent attitude. We thank her family for sharing her with us and for letting her spend countless hours making sure Edmond was a better place than when she found it. Hundreds of thousands of people benefited from the events she put on and the work she did but never knew that she was the one behind it. Leah would not have had it any other way.

Fostering Sweet Dreams is a non profit that provides tangible needs such as beds, car seats, high chairs and strollers to kinship foster-care placements along with unexpected traditional foster-care placements. Kristy and Randy Payne were so moved by the needs of foster children that they’ve made it their life’s goal to help and started this organization. Since March 2016, the Fostering Sweet Dreams Foundation outreach has been providing children, and those who care for them, necessities such as beds, car seats, high chairs and strollers. The organization has impacted 1750 children to date. Although a bed or a car seat might not be someone’s idea of a luxury item, they are in great demand. Many times Fostering Sweet Dreams is able to fill the gap and provide items needed for kinship foster care, teens aging out of foster care, domestic abuse victims or to keep children out of foster care. The Paynes believe supporting foster families is key in allowing, in many cases, for placement to happen. Visit the hospitality tent at the Downtown Edmond Arts Festival to buy a ticket for a chance to win a basket of items donated by the merchants of the Downtown Edmond Business Association. All proceeds will go to the Fostering Sweet Dreams Foundation. For more information, call: 405-697-4744 or visit fosteringsweetdreams.com
Welcome to the 2021 Downtown Edmond Art Festival
Since the first Downtown Edmond Arts Festival in 1978, the event has taken place the first weekend of May. Of course, in May 2020 everything was still in lockdown. May 2021 came and went, but Downtown Edmond remained open. Will we have to wait until 2022 for another arts festival? The good news is no, we won’t! “The Arts Festival will return this year on Sept 10-12, before resuming our regular schedule in Spring 2022,” said Michelle Schaefer, one of the new chairs of the Downtown Edmond Arts Festival. Sponsored by the merchants of the Downtown Edmond Business Association, the fall event marks the 43rd annual year for this award winning event. “We attract top talent from across the nation to our show,” said Schaefer. The proceeds help the downtown merchants pay for marketing that showcases the unique businesses in Downtown Edmond. Bryanne Wallace chaired the Arts Festival from 2007 until her last festival in 2019. She devoted many hours working to make it a successful event. Bryanne passed away in April 2021. Schaefer said “Bryanne made the artists feel at home and valued. That was probably her biggest legacy. We want to honor her memory by making this festival even better.”
While you’ll see a lot of your favorite artists and food trucks, there are many new changes the committee hopes you will enjoy. “We revised the artist’s booth layouts to break up the flow of visitors and provide more social distancing”, said Nancy Meoli, the other co-chair for the event. “The changes will also provide more visibility to the businesses along Broadway and create a more leisurely browsing experience with the artists.” There will be 140 artists from 12 states participating, some from as far away as Florida and Wyoming, showcasing their talents in oil, acrylic, watercolor, jewelry, pottery and photography. There will also be a special section on First Street for Artisan crafters, showing their skills in leather, wood, resin, glass, metal and fabric. Be sure and venture down First Street to the Festival Marketplace, where there will be a huge assortment of fun and games for all ages. The first stop will be a foam pit, where you can have the ultimate foam party! From there you can play on a 16 square foot chess board with 3 foot tall chess pieces, or play a game of giant checkers or Connect 4. There will also be giant stacking blocks, giant dominoes, ring toss and cornhole games. Also in the open marketplace area
Page 11
will be a series of tents with children’s activities. Several businesses will have free “make and take” activities. Be sure and check the schedule to see when your favorite princess and superheroes will be there! Keep going to the covered pavilion where you can sit in the shade and listen to local artists, including Black Water Bridge on Friday night and Kyle Dillingham on Saturday night. Also under the pavilion will be the Greater OKC Pickleball Club, demonstrating this fast growing sport. There are also three street corner musical venues featuring local singers such as Edgar Cruz and Olivia Kay. Downtown merchants will donate gifts to put in a giant basket that will be raffled off, with the proceeds donated to Fostering Sweet Dreams, a local non-profit that provides beds, car seats and strollers to foster care placements. With so many moving parts, you’re going to want to download the Downtown Edmond app to keep up with it all! Look for it soon in your Apple and Android store.
