MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I

t won’t be long until we’ll be thinking about 2014, hard to believe since I’m writing my column in August.

For Edmond and the Chamber it’s been another year of progress. The record should reflect a continued increase in sales tax revenues. That’s important because it reflects a vibrant local economy. And a strong local economy is important to the community.

Housing starts continue on the upswing and for the second year running at a record pace.

Our board recently heard an education update from the leaders of UCO, Oklahoma Christian, Francis Tuttle and the Edmond Public Schools, and they all talked about the increase in student population. More good news for Edmond!

For the Chamber, we have been once again blessed with good leadership.

Chairman Darin Kent, Regent Bank, has been an articulate and committed leader this year. The chairmanship of the chamber requires our volunteer leaders to spend time away from their businesses and Darin, along with other members of our Executive Committee and Board of Directors, have been present when needed.

We continue to place an emphasis on meeting the needs of our small

business members and we continue to provide programs and events that provide either educational or networking opportunities.

Attendance at all of our events has been good and our membership continues to grow. And the chamber continues to be financially strong.

As I look ahead to 2014, I see a year of continued growth for Edmond.

The long awaited Public Safety Center is now under construction in downtown Edmond and will drastically alter how we see the core area of our city. Francis Tuttle will have a fully-functioning facility in our community which will be an asset to startup companies. A conference center and hotel for Edmond should be underway in 2014 and will fill a much needed void for meetings and conferences. With a strong education system in place, Edmond should continue to grow in the coming year.

Your chamber is poised to be a partner with the City of Edmond, our elected officials and our education community to make Edmond the city of choice for new people moving to central Oklahoma.

The Edmond Chamber is working for you and your business.

I

n May, Governor Mary Fallin signed into law Senate Bill 1062, which reforms the current workers’ compensation system in our state. This law will change the Oklahoma workers’ compensation system from judicial to administrative, seeking to reduce costs for businesses.

Written by Senate President Pro Tem Brian Bingman and House Speaker T.W. Shannon, the bill is designed to allow for a better and faster process for both workers and employers. It also allows businesses to opt out of the workers’ compensation system as long as they provide equivalent benefits to injured workers. Before this bill, Oklahoma’s workers’ compensation system has been identified as one of the most expensive in the nation.

“For decades, Oklahoma has had one of the most expensive and inefficient workers’ compensation

systems in the country, a constant obstacle for business owners looking to expand operations or create more jobs,” Fallin said.

“Senate Bill 1062 completely overhauls our flawed workers’ comp system, dramatically reducing the costs to businesses and freeing up private-sector resources that can be invested in jobs rather than lawsuits.

Additionally, our reforms ensure injured workers are treated fairly and given the medical care needed to return to work. This is

an important pro-growth policy that will help us attract jobs and build a stronger and more prosperous Oklahoma.”

Reforming our state’s workers’ compensation system was one of the Edmond Chamber of Commerce’s top legislative priorities for 2013. The Chamber supported the bill, stating that the new system will be more cost-effective for businesses, not only in Edmond, but in our state as a whole.

CHAMBER’S OLDEST MEMBERS Which of the Edmond Chamber’s members have been with us the longest? This section highlights a business who has been a loyal member for many years.

F

ounded in 1974, Kennedy Tire and Auto Service has been a valued member of the Edmond community for almost 30 years. When Tad Kennedy’s father opened Edmond Tire Center it was one of six tire and auto businesses he owned in the state of Oklahoma.

When Tad graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1985, he planned on going to work for a technology company and using his

Computer and Business Management degree.

It wasn’t until his father explained to him that he could use the knowledge he had gained in college at the family business that Tad changed his mind.

While his father had built up stores with the intention of selling them off, Tad had other ideas in mind for the Edmond location.

When Tad bought the business he changed the name to Kennedy

Tire and Auto Service.

Putting his name on the business highlighted the importance he saw in investing in the Edmond community.

Being a part of the community and pulling together to make Edmond a better place is one of the reasons Tad has seen value in investing in the Chamber for so long. “You never know who you will meet through the Chamber and how you might be able to help each other in some way,” he said. “We’re

Being a member of the Chamber has provided Kennedy Tire and Auto Service with a sense of validity in the business community.

GROWING IN EDMOND Tad attributes the success of his business to the emphasis they put on quality of service. Being honest with customers and keeping a consistent staff who cares about the quality of work they do makes Kennedy Tire stand out among the competition. When competition in the industry has grown at

four times the rate as the population, Kennedy Tire has focused on adapting to the ever-changing business environment in Edmond.

“The one constant is change,” Tad said.

Kennedy Tire was the first tire and auto shop in Oklahoma to have a computer system and they were fully computerized by 1985, the year Tad took over the shop. Not only is this a testament to their innovation, but it also validates his father’s advice to his son 21 years ago that his computer degree would, in fact, be put to good use.

Last year, Tad sold his other shop in Oklahoma City to further focus on growing his business in Edmond. A third generation Edmond resident, Tad wants to continue to invest in the community he loves.

“Looking forward, I hope to continue to serve the people of Edmond and adapt to the changes in technology and consumer needs,” he said.

“The quality of people in Edmond is amazing,” Tad remarked. The sense of community Tad feels for Edmond echoes through every aspect of his business.

The Edmond Chamber is honored to have long-time members like Tad who understand the important role we all play in our community.

The Chamber recognizes the important role nonprofit organizations play in our community. This section highlights the efforts of those working to make Edmond a better place to live, work and grow.

M

ary Robertson’s love for animals started when she was young. “I’ve always loved animals,” she smiles. It progressed as an adult when her children would bring home stray animals asking if they could have them as pets. But you don’t need Mary to tell you she loves animals, it’s apparent in the way her face lights up as she talks about the organization she co-founded with Lynn Cherry, Paws for Life.

Founded in 2001, Paws for Life’s mission is to assist the City of

Edmond Animal Shelter in finding all healthy and adoptable animals good homes. Paws for Life works to ensure that adoptable animals will be afforded the opportunity to have healthy and happy lives with a home and a family of their own.

Paws for Life works directly with the Edmond Animal Shelter to coordinate volunteers to walk dogs, play with cats, clean the cages and most importantly, show much needed affection to each dog and cat.

With the shelter at full capacity, Paws for Life needs the support of the Edmond community more than ever. As of August, the shelter was housing around 150 dogs and cats in a facility originally designed to hold less than 50.

If you are thinking about getting a pet, Mary urges you to consider adopting from the shelter. The adoption fee is only $25.00 and they have a variety of dogs and cats to choose from. Mary has three dogs and two cats of her own, all adopted from the shelter.

T

he City of Edmond, the YMCA and Edmond Public Schools have partnered to bring our community a world-class competitive swimming and recreation center. The $22.5 million facility is being built next to the MultiActivity Center in Mitch Park and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Ground was broken in April 2011 on the 102,000 square foot facility. The aquatics portion of the facility will span nearly 40,000 square feet and contain an eight-lane, 50-meter competitive pool.

This will be the home for the Edmond Public Schools high school swim training, matches and meets. It will also include a large, separate leisure pool with a children’s slide.

The passage of the October 2010 bond issue contributed $10 million to the project, while both the City of Edmond and the YMCA each brought $6 million to the project.

The City of Edmond also contributed the land and infrastructure being used for this project.

The YMCA plans to keep its facility on Rankin open, while also overseeing the new location. Edmond Public Schools and the City of Edmond will also contribute to the operation of the facility.

According to the President and CEO of the Greater Oklahoma City YMCA Mike Grady, this is the first time a YMCA, a school district and a city have joined together for a project of this kind.

As of August 20, the project was 80 percent complete.

The YMCA plans to begin marketing membership fees and promotions this fall.
