Mares with More—Prissy Cline

It is interesting to see how different stallions and mares can contribute to the breed during there breeding careers. It is common knowledge that stallions will produce more foals than a mare. So the stallion will conceivably have a larger impact on the breed by shear numbers along. But when a mare is the dam of good sons then she increases her influence on the breed more than if she was producing only fillies. One of the great mares of all time was Della Moore. She was a successful racehorse that had been ridden in races from her home state of Louisiana to her trip into Texas that led to her “accidental” breeding to the thoroughbred Joe Blair. This is the mating that gave us Joe Reed P-3 the third horse selected into the AQHA Stud Book as a modern foundation sire. She followed Joe Reed up by producing for Ott Adams the good sire Joe Moore by Little Joe. Although she produced another full brother and 2 full sisters to Joe Moore, she will be remembered as a matriarch for her contribution to the breed through Joe Reed P-3 and Joe Moore as both of these stallions have had a great influence on the breed. This brings us to Prissy Cline our subject mare in this month’s edition of Mares With More. When we tell the story of Prissy Cline we may find that she can attribute her opportunity to be an influence on the breed through her son Sun Frost. But when we look closer it was her gelding sons that were full brothers to Sun Frost that enabled Prissy Cline to be an influence on the breed making her one of our mares with more.
The story of Prissy Cline begins in Arizona an area known as the Tonto Basin. The Tonto Basin is located north and east of Phoenix. Some of the communities that are found in and around this area include Camp Verde, Payson, Tonto Basin (the town) and Globe. When you look at the western history of this area you see that it has ties to such famous western characters as Clanton family of Wyatt Earp fame. It was the Clanton’s that were Earp’s most ardent enemies when he was in Tombstone. There was a time when they lived in this area. Zane Grey even wrote a novel called Tonto Basin. The quarter horse ties to this area read like a who’s who for good rodeo and racehorse owners and breeders as well as rodeo performers. These names include George Cline, Joe Bassett, Asbury Schell and Roy Wales that all lived in and around the Tonto Basin area. The story of how these men came together to influence the life of Prissy Cline was featured in Phil Livingston and Jim Morris’ great book THE DRIFTWOOD LEGACY. Here is how they told what happened and the role this plays in our story, “In 1940 George Cline noticed a bay stallion that Buck Nichols was roping calves and team tying steers off of and decided that he had to own him. That horse was Driftwood (Speedy). At the annual Payson rodeo one year Joe Bassett matched Tommy Rhodes on ten calves and beat him—and borrowed Speedy from Buck Nichols to do it…” The Livingston and Morris book goes on to tell that Continued on page 24...

ally bought Driftwood. Schell later sold Driftwood to Channing and Catherine Peake. The Peake’s went on to breed Driftwood Ike, the sire of Prissy Cline. George Cline was no stranger to the rodeo arena. He was Arizona Calf Tying Champion at the Payson Rodeo in 1916. He won the World Championship Bull Tying Contest at Phoenix in 1919 and he won the calf tying at Yankee Stadium in New York City in 1923. He was the first man to rope a calf at the first rodeo held in the new Madison Square Garden. Joe Bassett was a rancher, rodeo performer and racehorse trainer. He owned several ranches in this area before setting up shop as a prominent racehorse trainer. His rodeo activities include the 1942 World’s Champion Roper at the Madison Square Garden—the most famous rodeo of this era. He was an RCA (now PRCA) top ten team-roper from 1946 to 1952. He finished 1952 as the Reserve Champion in team roping behind Asbury Schell, whom he roped with. Joe Bassett went from ranching and the rodeo arena to the racetrack to become a successful trainer. One of his most successful runners would Page 24
have to be Go Derussa Go. This Go Man Go daughter won the 1969 Los Alamitos Invitational, the Inaugural Handicap and the Go Man Go Handicap while being trained by Joe Bassett. This gave Go Derussa Go the 1969 AQHA Champion Aged Mare and the 1969 AQHA Champion Mare titles. Bassett’s success on the track made him a member of the Arizona Quarter Horse Racing Hall of Fame. The influence of Joe Bassett family on quarter horse racing is very prevalent in today’s racing scene. Joe’s son John and his grandson Joe (Bear Dog) have continued the Bassett legacy on quarter horse racing as trainers. John and Joe (Bear Dog) have won the race we know today as the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1) (The Deuce) a total of six times. John won the inaugural Los Alamitos Million Dollar Futurity with Evening Snow. He went on to win three more runnings of this race between 1996 and 2007. Joe (Bear Dog) has won two runnings of this great race with Blues Girl Too in 2006 and I Like The Odds in 2011. One of the mares owned by Joe Bassett was Webb’s Demon. This 1948 black mare was an ROM runner on the racetrack with the old AA rating. The AA rating is equivalent to a speed index in the 80’s. She was bred by T. J. Durrance and Son of West Palm Beach, Florida. She was sired by Sonny Chicaro Joe and she was out of Quarter Queen by Old Poco Bueno. Sonny Chicaro Joe was bred by O. W. Cardwell of Junction, Texas. Cardwell was the last owner of Little Joe the famous south Texas Quarter horse sired by Traveler and out of Jenny. The sire of Sonny Chicaro Joe was Chicaro, the thoroughbred. His dam was James Sunset by Little Joe. James Sunset was also the dam of Double Life. Double Life was the dam of Two D Two, the sire of Two Eyed Jack the all time leading sire of AQHA Champions. The dam of Webb’s Demon was Quarter Queen by Old Poco Bueno. This is the Old Poco Bueno that is the sire of Miss Taylor, the dam of the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Poco Bueno by King P-234. Old Poco Bueno was sired by Little Joe. The dam of Quarter Queen was an Uncle Jimmy Gray mare. Her sire was Uncle Jimmy Gray. She was bred by the Premont Estate of Premont, Texas. Webb’s Demon produced her first foal for Bassett in 1955 when she foaled Skip’s Gal by Magnolia Skipper. This mare went unplaced on the racetrack. The next four foals out of Webb’s Demon were sired by Bassett’s great stallion Super Charge. Super Charge was a 1951 sorrel stallion sired by Depth Charge the thoroughbred and out of O’Quinns Midget by the great King P-234. Super Charge was Continued on page 28...

the 1953 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. He was a stakes winner in the Baby Stakes and the Southwest Futurity at Rillito. He was second in the Central Bar and Grill Futurity at Ruidoso. He set a world record going 250 yards in 13.4 seconds and he equaled a track record going 330 yards in 17.1 seconds. The four foals produced by Super Charge and Webb’s Demon were Superspeed, Josephine El, Saddle Horn and Periwinkle. Superspeed was an ROM/ AAA racehorse. She was the dam of six ROM racehorses. Saddle Horn was an ROM/AAA rated runner that went to the arena to become ROM. He earned six AQHA halter and five AQHA performance points. He was an NCHA money earner as well. He was the sire of both ROM racehorses and ROM performance horses. Periwinkle was unshown and unraced in the AQHA. Josephine El was unraced and unshown in the AQHA. But she was the dam of Prissy Cline. She was owned by John Cline of Phoenix when she produced Prissy Cline and two other foals in Pine Creek Joe and Patsy Cline making him the breeder of these three horses. After conferring with Phil Livingston, the noted author and historian, we believe John Cline was a grandson of George Cline. Prissy Cline was sired by Driftwood Ike by Driftwood. This brings Roy Wales into the story. Roy was a cotton farmer, rancher and roper from Queen Creek, Arizona. He had roped on Driftwood and then he started breeding to him. He owned and used Firewood, Hallie Wood and Wooden Nugget. He owned Driftwood Ike when he sired Prissy Cline. Driftwood Ike had a successful rodeo career that carried a lot of cowboys to the pay window. His Stanley and Frances Johnston were a team but they each had their own horses. Prissy Cline was going to be Frances' new barrel horse and that made her special as Frances was a great horseman in her own right.
AQHA show record shows that he was ROM in the performance arena and served as the AQHA Reserve High Point Steer Roping Horse in 1969. He earned 31 tie-down roping points and 23 heeling points in the AQHA. The registration certificate for Prissy Cline shows that Roy Wales had become her owner. She was foaled in 1961 and Stanley and Frances Johnston of Arizona and South Dakota bought her in about 1963 or 1964. Stanley and Frances Johnston were South Dakota ranchers that spent the winters in Arizona. They were both active in rodeos and showing their horses and Prissy Cline was bought from Roy Wales as a barrel horse for Frances Johnston. This is how Randy Johnston recalled the circumstances that came about after Frances bought Prissy Cline, “Mom bought Prissy as a barrel horse. She was two when they got her. But not long after that my mother became sick with cancer and was never able to show her as a barrel horse. When Mom died Dad made her a broodmare.” He added this, “Mom made me promise to never sell her and I had her the rest of her life.” The first two foals out of Prissy Cline were Poco Pristina and Speediwood, both sired by Poco Speedy, the foundation sire of the Stanley Johnston breeding program. Neither one of these horses has an AQHA show or race record. Poco Pristina was the dam of Primetime Jack, a 2006 AQHA Regional Reserve Champion Heading Horse and a AQHA Youth Regional Champion in Breakaway Roping. The second performer out of Poco Pristina was Hank Pank by Doc’s Jack Frost. He was an NCHA money winner. Prissy Cline’s next foal was Runnin Gunn by Doc’s Continued on page 32...

Jack Frost. Runnin Gun became a ranch and rodeo horse for the late Pat Cowan a South Dakota rancher and horseman. Pat Cowan was a close friend of Stanley Johnston. Randy Johnston recalls the relationship between his father and Pat Cowan this way, “Pat Cowan was a great cowboy and horseman. He was my friend and my Dad’s greatest friend. They contested at rodeos for many years and they both raised good horses. Pat bought horses from my Dad and his horses crossed good with Pat’s horses.” Runnin Gunn was the first of six foals sired by Doc’s Jack Frost and out of Prissy Cline and all six were horse colts. Runnin Gun was followed by Skyjack who has no AQHA show or race record. Deputy Doc was next on her produce list. This 1973 gelding earned 37 open performance points and 121 youth performance points. He was ROM in the open and youth divisions with a Superior in Youth Western Pleasure. The next gelding in this cross was Four T Winks who has one AQHA performance point. The next gelding in this group was Quick Draw Cline and he went to join his brother Runnin Gunn on the Cowan Ranch. These two Doc’s Jack Frost/ Prissy Cline foals became noted rodeo horses for the Cowan family. They were the key to Sun Frost becoming a sire for Pat Cowan. Sun Frost was the next foal born to Doc’s Jack Frost and Prissy Cline. Sun Frost was purchased by the Cowan Ranch after the success they had with his full brothers Runnin Gunn and Quick Draw Cline making him a stallion prospect for the Cowan’s. This is how an old Cowan Brothers Sale Catalog described the role of Prissy Cline’s geldings in the Page 32

purchase of Sun Frost. “Runnin Gunn and another full brother, Quick Draw Cline were premier arena and ranch horses. The great mind, speed and ability they possessed were the foundation for our eventual decision to select Sun Frost as a breeding stallion.” Pat Cowan trained Sun Frost to be a cutting horse when the colt was a two-year-old. Sun Frost was shown by Cowan’s son Tigh in a high school regional cutting as a “two year old.” They won and then went on to show in the State High School Rodeo. This appears to be the extent of Sun Frost’s show career and he became the senior sire for the Cowan Ranch.

But when you get into the sire record of Sun Frost outside the AQHA you see that the versatility is still there with progeny earnings of over $2,000,000. When you start telling about the barrel racing sire record of Sun Frost you have to start with his son French Flash Hawk or “Bozo” as he is known in the professional barrel racing circles. This gelding earned four Woman’s Professional Rodeo Association Barrel Racing World Championships for Kristie Peterson. Bozo was a five time AQHA/PRCA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year with earnings of over $1,000,000 in the rodeo arena. Bozo was out of Casey’s Charm by Tiny Circus and she was out of Casey’s Ladylove. Casey’s Charm and Casey’s Ladylove are the foundation of the Frenchman line of barrel racing horses of Frances Loiseau and her family and their partnership with Pat Cowan. Casey’s Charm was bred six times to Sun Frost with five more good foals coming after Bozo. The other five foals from this cross include the stallions PC Frenchmans Mark, PC Frenchman and PC Frenchmans Hayday. PC Frenchmans Hayday will help us show the versatility of the Sun Frost bred horses. This stallion
has earned over $230,000 in the arena. He has done it in barrel racing, heading and heeling. His foals are showing this kind of versatility as well. The number two 2011 AQHA/PRCA Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year was MP Right Back Atya and the 2011 AQHA/ PRCA Co-Horse of the Year in Barrel Racing was MP Meter My Hay—both sired by PC Frenchmans Hayday. Frenchmans Guy is a 1987 son of Sun Frost and out of Frenchmans Lady by Laughing Boy and she is out of Casey’s Ladylove. This makes Frenchmans Guy a ¾ brother to Bozo and his full brothers and sister. Frenchmans Guy was a successful show horse that has gone on to be a leading sire. He is now the all time leading living sire of barrel racing money winners with over $4,000,000 in earnings. He was the 2011 #1 Leading Sale Sire. His top performers include SX Frenchmans Vanila, the only Triple Crown winner of the Speedhorse Silver, Speedhorse Gold, the Lazy E and Old Fort Days Futurities. This mare is also the winner of the Speedhorse Gold Derby. Some other winners by Frenchmans Guy include Guys Cash Perks, 2009 BFA Futurity Champion in both the open and amateur divisions and Frenchmans Jester, 2006 BFA Futurity Open World Champion. The success of Sun Frost is not limited to his cross on Casey’s Charm and Casey’s Ladylove. He has proven to cross well with mares from many other bloodlines. They include the mare Gee Gee Decade by New Decade. New Decade is sired by Azure Te. Gee Gee Decade is out of Bunny Gee by Bunny Bid. Gee Gee Decade is the dam of PC Gee Gee Frost, a 2003 Speedhorse Silver Futurity go-round winner as well as an NFR performer. Frosty Feelins is a 2000 sorrel mare by Sun Frost. This mare counts among her wins the 2009 Championships in barrel racing at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo and the Pikes Peak Or Bust Rodeo. She was also the 2009 Justin Boots Pro Tour Reserve Champion. Frosty Feelins was out of Dynas Plain Special by Special Feelins by Special Effort. The last Doc’s Jack Frost/Prissy Cline foal was Marco Doc. This gelding went to the Cowan Ranch and his AQHA ownership record shows his last owner to be Tim Cowan. This takes us to Cross Fire Kate one of only two daughters of Prissy Cline. This mare became a broodmare for the Cowan Ranch. She was bred by Stanley Johnston and she was the first of several foals sired by Sak Em San. Sak Em San was the last stallion that Stanley Johnston stood. His sire was Peppy San. Cross Fire Kate is the dam of two mares used in the Cowan breeding program. They are PC Peppy Kate and PC Miss Priss Oak. PC Peppy Kate is the dam of PC Mr Sun Peppy. This stallion is the winner of events like the Can Chaser Classic Championship and the Sunrise Barrel Racing Futurity. What makes this so interesting is that the sire of PC Mr Sun Peppy is Sun Frost, who is out of Prissy Cline while the second dam of this horse, is Crossfire Kate who is out of Prissy Cline. This gives PC Mr Sun Peppy a 2 X 3 breeding pattern to Prissy Cline. Prissy Cline produced two more foals by Sak Em San. They are Scat Cat San and Sac Em Super. Neither of these horses
has a show record. When we started our look at the influence of Prissy Cline we talked about how sons of mares are the key to a mare having an influence on the breed. The success of Sun Frost is proof of how Prissy Cline has been an influence on the breed. He is the sire of foals that have earned over $2,000,000 in the arena. But now let's look at how the influence of this mare is being perpetuated by some of her grandsons and great grandsons. A look at the barrel racing statistics for the year you can find some interesting things about Sun Frost, his sons and his grandson. In 2011 Frenchmans Guy was #2 on the Top Twenty Sires of Money winners list for the year. Frenchmans Guy was followed on this list by his full brother PC Frenchman at #8. Number ten on this list was A Sharp Frenchman by Frenchmans Guy. BHR Frenchies Socks by Frenchmans Guy was 13th on this list. Sadies Frosty Drift by Frenchmans Guy was #18 on this list. Mel Potter’s Driftwood Horses
Driftwood, the foundation sire of the Mel Potter Driftwood breeding program.
The story of Mel Potter and his Driftwood horses
starts in 1944 when, as a young boy, the Potter family moved to Arizona from Wisconsin. The move was not a complete break from Wisconsin but one that allowed the family to spend the winters in sunny Arizona. This is a trend still common today as many residents of places like Wisconsin and Minnesota spend the winter in a warmer climate.

When you talk to Mel it is clear that he has always worked to be well mounted when he entered the rodeo arena. It was his need to be well mounted that fueled his desire to raise good horses and today the Mel Potter breeding program has produced the earners of over $1,000,000 in arena. A key to this success was his appreciation for the Driftwood bred horses he not only rode but also breeds today on the Potter Ranch in Marana, Arizona.
The move to Arizona did open the door for Mel to become a life long rodeoroping enthusiast and participant. Poker Chip Peake was his registered name and he was sired by Driftwood and out of Sage Hen by Waggoner. Those in rodeo that saw Poker Chip perform considered him the greatest roping horse to ever live and Mel feels that way as well. He described Poker Chip this way, “That horse was so impressive, it was unreal it was like having a magic wand when you entered the rodeo. It was almost like having money in bank when you rode that horse. He was so awesome in every area that if you could rope at all you could win money. I won quite a little on him. I didn’t ride him all that much, oh, maybe six to ten rodeos but I won or placed almost everytime. So I knew the Driftwood’s were outstanding horses.” Despite the opportunity and honor to ride great horses like Poker Chip, Potter wasn’t convinced about how good the Driftwood’s were. He related it this way about what put him over the top as a member of the Driftwood fan club, “What convinced me was the colt I got out of a little mare I roped on. I broke that mare when I didn’t know anything and she didn’t know anything. She was 18 months old when I bought her and I made a rope horse out of her. I didn’t know how to rope. I would go to rodeos and then I would go home and try to remember what they did. Looking back on it, it was pretty naïve of me to think I could learn how to rope but I did.” He continued about the role of the little mare and her colt, “This little mare was pretty decent considering her training. With me training her and I didn’t know how to rope. Anyway I bred her to a horse of Dale Smith’s named Speedywood a son of Driftwood. Speedywood was a full brother to Driftwood Ike. There were five full brothers and sisters out of the mare Hancock Belle. The others were Maestro that Eddie Schell won the world on, Chilena and Buckwood. They were all outstanding rodeo roping horses.” He continued, “Anyway I bred this mare to Speedywood and I got this horse colt that I gelded. We called him Charlie. I broke him when he was a long two-year-old. He was gentle and easy to break. Nice colt. Then right after he turned three I started roping on him. Break away calves and scoring. He was tracking cattle real good but I had never got off him.” It was at this point that Mel related one problem in the training of this colt, “He wasn’t stopping like you needed a horse to stop back in those days. You needed a killing stop or you got ate up by the size of cattle we were using. He was stopping but it wasn’t real hard. So I went down to the arena with my chute help my wife Wendy. I told her put one of those team tying steers in the chute.”
He continued, “I thought well I’m going to give this horse a heck of a jerk to see if I can get him to really paying attention and want to stop. So I roped this team-tying steer that weighed about 650 lbs. This steer was bigger than we normally team rope on today. I ran up on that ole steer, roped him and pitched the slack in the air. When that steer hit him and he wasn’t expecting anything like that, it almost jerked him down.” “Well I said put another one in and I ran up on that steer and waved that slack and that little son of a gun got in the ground with all four feet. He was braced up and was not going to take another jerk like that. He jerked that second steer straight up over backwards. I couldn’t believe it. That’s how fast he learned. That really impressed me. All this happened one evening in about an hour or hour and a half.” Potter added this about the next phase in this colts training, “I had a lane that I brought my cattle back into and so I trotted that horse down that lane and pitched that rope and got off and he started to back up. He just started running back in that 14-foot lane and so I did it again and I’ll tell you when I stepped off him I almost didn’t get the end of the rope because he just flew back. Talk about a horse learning fast. “So I told Wendy to put one of those calves in the lane I’m just going to rope one of these calves to see what happens. Man, I run straddle that calf and pitched that slack and it just ripped that calf down and he just came sledding to me. The calf didn’t even have a chance to get back on his feet. I helped him up and then flanked him and tied him.” “I tied two more in that lane, the same thing every time. He was working better than the calf horse I was roping on in just roping those three calves. So I decided to try it in the arena and out in the arena the same thing. He would rip them down and run backward.” “So that was the same week of the Phoenix Rodeo, which at that time was one of the top five outdoor rodeos with the likes of Calgary, Salinas, Pendleton and Cheyenne. But Wendy said you should take him to Tucson to the horse show that was going on that same weekend. She said you ought to enter him in the junior roping at the quarter horse show. The way he is working he might just win it.” The problem was Mel was planning to go to the big rodeo in Phoenix. So Wendy took Mel’s heading horse and calf horse to Phoenix and Mel took “Charlie” to the big quarter horse show in Tucson. Mel’s solution to his being in two places was to fly to Phoenix when he was finished in Tucson. Continued 0n page 54...

After a quick lesson in how to load into a trailer, Mel found himself in Tucson and his next obstacle, “Around home he stood around like an old dog but when I unloaded him at the fair there were Ferris wheels, flags, more horses than he had ever seen before and his ole eyes were bugged out. He was acting like a completely different horse. I thought this is going to be the biggest wreck I’ve been in my life. Again I realized how naive I was to take a green horse like this to a big show.” “Then I realized I had never run him through a barrier. Luckily they were having a halter class in the arena so I got a friend to hold the barrier up a few times. Well that barrier snapping was scaring him and pretty soon he acted like he didn’t want to go behind that barrier. So I decided to wait for the barrier to pop before I took off.” Mel interjected this about what he was up against, “Now this Tucson show was one of the biggest horse shows in the country as well. Fort Worth, Denver, San Antonio and Houston were the others in this top five. All the big trainers were there-- Matlock Rose, Lanham Riley, Amye Gamblin and Jess Goodspeed.” He concluded this part of his story this way, “When I nodded my head the first thing that colt saw that he liked was that little ole calf running out of there. I mean he just knocked his tracks out and I roped the calf and he jerked him down. He slid him back to me and I got the calf up and flanked him down. I won it and that was the seventh calf I had roped on him and that is how I became sold on Driftwood horses.” Charlie the gelding that made Mel Potter a tried and true Driftwood believer was registered as Speedy’s Redwood. His sire Speedywood was a son of Driftwood and he was out of the mare Hancock Belle by Buck by Chicaro. Red Ghara the dam of Charlie was registered with the National Quarter Horse Breeders Association. Red Joe of Arizona by Joe Reed P-3 was her sire. Red Ghara was out of Gharzia by Ghara. Charlie went on to be a good calf horse for Mel that was used for heading, heeling and as a pickup horse for Mel’s rodeo company. He later added barrel racing to his resume when he carried JoLynn, Mel and Wanda’s oldest daughter to start her barrel-racing career. The next part of the story comes about when Mel got a call from his good friend Chuck Sheppard, “Chuck Sheppard was a heck of cowboy and he was a good friend of mine. His daughter married John Keickhefer and Chuck and John ended up owning Driftwood Ike.” Driftwood Ike was the full brother to Speedywood that sired Charlie. He was bred by Catherine Peake. Chuck Sheppard was the 1946 RCA (PRCA) World Champion Team Roper.
Driftwood Ike has proven to be a great representative of the Driftwood line as both a performer and a sire. Driftwood Ike had a successful rodeo career that carried a lot of cowboys to the pay window. His AQHA show record shows that he was ROM in the performance arena and served as the AQHA Reserve High Point Steer Roping Horse in 1969. He earned 31 tie-down roping points and 23 heeling points in the AQHA. He is the sire of many of the great Driftwoods including Orphan Drift and Prissy Cline, the dam of incomparable Sun Frost. Both Orphan Drift and Prissy Cline were used by Stanley Johnston and his son Randy in their breeding program. Mel continued telling how he came to start his Driftwood broodmare band through Chuck Sheppard, “They had a drought going on and Chuck wanted to know if I had a place that we could run 10 to 15 mares. He wanted to send those mares and a stud named Mr Top Moon. He was sired by Top Moon and out of a heck of a mare.” The dam of Mr Top Moon was Ford Falcon, a daughter of Lady Thomas Wilson. Lady Thomas Wilson was the dam of All American Futurity winner Decketta. He continued about this phase of the story, “All of these mares were sired by Driftwood Ike or bred to Driftwood Ike. Chuck says we will split the colts. So I started taking the fillies especially the Driftwood Ike fillies. So I got a few daughters of Driftwood Ike and I got a bunch of granddaughters of his. That gave me 8 to 12 nice mares that were close up Driftwood Ike. The other side of the pedigree was great too. A lot of Poquito Mos and Wayward Irving horses that Chuck had used.” “In the mean time Bud Tillard in Douglas, Wyoming, a good friend of mine, and his family were in the cattle business and he wanted to get some Driftwood blood. Bud had some nice mares and he would get a different stud about every 3 or 4 years. So I called Chuck to see if I could get a Driftwood stud from him. He said I’ve got three three-year-olds and they were Lone Drifter, Ike’s Last and the other one I believe was White Lightning Ike. They kept two and they let me have Lone Drifter. I think I got him because he had been injured. They had put a cast on the injury but it didn’t heal right and he was never shown. So I sent him up to Tillards to put on his mares. He stayed there for about two or three years.” Lone Drifter was sired by Driftwood Ike and he was out of Moore Yen by Yendis by Top Deck. The dam of Moore Yen was Katy Mas by Poquito Mas. Poquito Mas was sired by Joe Moore by Little Joe. Joe Moore was out of the great race mare Della Moore. The dam of Poquito Mas was Yokohama by Spokane. The dam of Katy Mas was Wayward Katy by Wayward Irving. Wayward Irving was sired by Scorcher (TB) and out of Fair Play by Barney Lucas. Let’s take a closer look at the pedigree of Lone Drifter. His sire Driftwood Ike was out of Hancock Belle by Buck. This Buck is reported to be a son of the thoroughbred Chicaro. The dam of Lone Drifter is Moore Yen. She was a granddaughter of Top Deck. The broodmare sire of Top Deck was the thoroughbred Chicaro. The dam of Yendis was Sue Bob by Flying Bob by Chicaro. The dam of Katy Mas was Wayward Katy, who was out of Broken Foot by Chicaro Bill by Chicaro. This gives Lone Drifter a breeding pattern of 4 X 5 X 5 X 6 to Chicaro. Katy Mas was sired by Poquito Mas by Joe Moore by Little Joe. Then we see that Chicaro Bill was the sire of Broken Foot, the second dam of Katy Mas. The broodmare sire of Chicaro Bill was Little Joe. This gives Katy Mas a breeding pattern of 3 X 4 to Little Joe. PC Lonewood Ike (Frisco) is a 1998 gelding sired by Lone Drifter. This gelding gives us an example of the siring ability of Lone Drifter. This horse was a product of the Potter lease of Lone Drifter to the Cowan Ranch in the late 1990’s. Colter Todd and Frisco have won such contests as Cheyenne and Pendleton as well as the USTRC open. This gelding also helped Tee Woolman win the heading at Pendleton in 2005. This good gelding has won in excess of $300,000 in the roping arena. The next step in our story has to do with Mel’s busy schedule. He was not only a roper but the family had its Cranberry business in Wisconsin to run, an Arizona ranch to run and a rodeo company to manage. This didn’t leave time for Mel to focus on his horse-breeding program and this led to his leasing his Driftwood mares to Pat Cowan of South Dakota and then to Haythorn Land and Cattle Company of Nebraska. They also leased Lone Drifter during this time period. Then Mel realized that his good Driftwood bred mares were getting some age on them. So he brought them home and started his Driftwood linebreeding program. One of the Driftwood mares that Mel singled out was Cranberry Jane. Cranberry Jane was a daughter of War Deck and out of Myrna’s Ike by Driftwood Ike. War Deck was a son of Top Deck. The interesting part of this is the Top Deck breeding Mel has used in his breeding program. Lone Drifter was out of Moore Yen by Yendis by Top Deck. The stallion that came with the Chuck Sheppard horses was Mr Top Moon by Top Moon by Moon Deck by Top Deck. During her years with the Haythorn Ranch, Cranberry Jane produced Figure Four 226 and Figure Four 526. Both of these horses were named the Top Horse in the Working Page 58

Ranch Cowboy Association. Figure Four 226 by Happy’s Warrior did it in 1999 and Figure Four 526 by Poco Bueno Image did it in 2005. Since her return to Arizona, Cranberry Jane has produced horses like Tyrel whose registered name is MP Woody Mango. Tyrel hit the road with Tee Woolman in 2007 starting what appeared to be the rode to a championship. Woolman found Tyrel on a visit to the Potter Ranch and he asked Mel if he could take him on the road and away they went. Woolman and Cory Petska took Tyrel and his full sister Craisin (MP Cranwood) to New Mexico winning the USTRC at Albuquerque. They went on winning or placing at places like Oakdale, Red Bluff and Corpus Christi. Mel estimated that they could have easily won $15,000 to $18,000 during this rode trip. But Tyrel wasn’t able to finish the year as a severe leg injury cost him his life and brought to an end what appeared to be a very promising rodeo career. But the pedigree of Tyrel and Craisin brings together the blood of Driftwood and Top Deck from both sides of the pedigree and a very interesting linebreeding pattern. They were sired by Lone Drifter. Lone Drifter being sired by Driftwood Ike by Driftwood. Lone Drifter was out of Moore Yen by Yendis by Top Deck. The female side of this pedigree shows that Cranberry Jane was sired by War Deck by Top Deck. The dam of Cranberry Jane was Myrna’s Ike by Driftwood Ike by Driftwood. This is a linebreeding cross of Driftwood on Top Deck and then Top Deck on Driftwood. Mel had the nucleus of a good broodmare band through his Driftwood Ike daughters and granddaughters. But he didn’t stop there as far as continuing to develop his broodmare band by buying other mares that represent other Driftwood lines. This included a number of daughters of

Tee Woolman showed this 2000 red roan team roping mare at the 2010 NFR. Fancy introduces us to another mare line that Mel has used in his Driftwood breeding program. The dam of MP Speed Rock is PC Speedy Sunzalez, a mare by Sun Frost and out of the Potter Ranch owned mare Speedy’s Tule. We will let Mel tell us how Speedy’s Tule comes into the

Smokey McCue was at least a ¾ sister to Sage Hen, the dam of Poker Chip. Thus Easy Keeper and Poker Chip Peake are at least 7/8 brothers being sired by Driftwood and out of Waggoner/Harmon Baker bred mares. Smokey McCue was sired by Waggoner who was sired by Midnight by Badger by Peter McCue. The dam of Smokey McCue was a mare by Harmon Baker by Peter McCue. When Mel bred Speedy’s Tule to Driftwood Ike he got a mare named Drifting Tule. Drifting Tule has come forward to play a key role in the Mel Potter Driftwood program as the dam of MP Thriftwood also known as Winston. MP Thriftwood would have a very short but very successful rodeo career with Cory Petska in the saddle. They started in October of 2005 with a first in the USTRC in Waco, Texas. They followed that up with a third in the finals of the USTRC at Oklahoma City also in October. They then went to the Dallas Tour Finals in November winning $12,000. The big win for this team came as the winners of the average at the NFR in December plus the Reserve World Championship in heeling for 2005. They won $87,000 in the NFR that year. The October to December show record earned $110,000. MP Thriftwood basically
retired to the breeding farm after this short rodeo career, although he is used around the ranch to help out. The sire of Winston is Drifts Chip who was sired by Double Drift. Double Drift was sired by Gray Chip by Driftwood. The dam of Gray Chip is Sugar Tit by Kelly. The dam of Double Drift was Rose Wood by Driftwood. Her dam was Miss Hondo by Hank I. When we include his dam’s pedigree this gives Winston a breeding pattern of 4 X 4 X 3 X 5 X 6 to Driftwood.
Our look at Winston has brought us to today’s Driftwood linebreeding program at the Mel Potter Ranch. This good young stallion certainly represents the Mel Potter Driftwood breeding program at its best. A breeding program that is built on the blood of the great Driftwood by a true believer of the power of this great bloodline. Approximately 300 head of horses went through the ring. The ranch horse competition was canceled due to the heavy amount of rain received the day before and sale day. Topping the sale was lot 12 consignment from Frank Carlson, Belvidere, SD. This 2001 Red Roan Gelding, Breezies Jack, sired by Breezies Big Bucks out of an Icabad x Blackburn Zip mare sold to Dean Wink of Howes SD, for $10,000. Dennis Selting, Hermosa, SD paid $4,500 to own lot 33 consigned by Linda Paulson, Fairfax, SD. This 2000 sorrel gelding Si Quixote Olena, was sired by Si Olena out of a Doc Bar x Shy Twist mare. Dugan Bad Warrior, Eagle Butte, SD, paid $4,200 to own lot 1, consigned by the Weller Ranch, Kadoka, SD. This 2001 Buckskin Gelding, Basic Soda, was sired by Tari U Dun It - Hollywood Dun It, out of a Mr Basic Black mare. Midwest Versatility Horse Sale Results Held October 1, 2012
“The good horses sold,” commented Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer, Paul Tierney, of his second annual Midwest Versatility Horse Sale (MVHS), in Rapid City, SD, on October 1, 2011. The successful sale of ranch and rope horses saw 39 versatility mares and geldings find new homes in nine states and Canada. Offering a strong selection of ranch raised horses, the Midwest Versatility Horse Sale is quickly building a reputation as the place to find solid roping, ranching and riding horses. Thirty-one consignors came together in the Black Hills of western South Dakota to preview and sell their horses to an appreciative set of buyers, who sought good using horses. Hosted by PRCA World Champion All-Around Cowboy and World Champion Calf Roper, Paul Tierney, the second annual MVHS was the culmination of a year’s worth of planning by the legendary cowboy and his family. The Oral, SD, professional cowboy operates a cow/ calf operation and a herd of registered American Quarter horses, which was recently chosen as one of the first herds in the nation to qualify for the AQHA’s new Ranching Heritage Breeders Program. The ten top selling horses in the second edition of the MVHS averaged just under $9,000. The next five top selling horses averaged $5,740 each. An impressive set of trained and skilled horses moved to new homes all over the country and Canada. Four select horses shared the top honors at $11,000 each. Two top sellers moved to Wyoming. Brad Harris, of Gillette, purchased a very cowy Oklahoma trained horse from Jace Crabb, of Magnum. L. F. Talkington, of Hillsdale, purchased a proven and hauled finished rope horse from Paul Tierney Performance Horses. Jim Williams of Arizona purchased the third top selling Paul Tierney accomplished rope horse; a five year old palomino gelding destined for future accomplishments in the rodeo arena. The other top selling sorrel mare trailed to Illinois, along with her yearling stud colt. The mare was a proven and prolific barrel racer, and the $10,700 selling colt was a valuable own son of the recently deceased leading Quarter Horse barrel racing and race track sire Dash Ta Fame. Paul David Tierney sold the sixth top selling, ready to go finished PRCA calf and heel horse, to Ray Grant of Colorado, for $10,000 The seventh high selling four year old gelding, also sold by Jace Crabb, a handy ranch and heading horse, brought $10,000, and went home with Chad Ludemann, to Springview, NE. Paul Tierney sold the eighth high selling gray gelding, a proven PRCA hauled horse at $7,500 to Deone Hart, of Mitchell, SD. The ninth selling horse, a 12 year old Pro Rodeo buckskin gelding, was purchased for $7,000 by Darin Roth of Hazen, ND, from Ty Talsma, of Verdigre, NE. $6,500 was what it took to move another Paul Tierney raised and trained rope horse to new owner, Carey Bevan, in Canada. This seven year old gelding was an athletic college rodeo horse that excels at both tie-down roping and heeling. Top selling MVHS horses this year represented famous American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) bloodlines which included: Driftwood, Leo, Peppy San, Frenchman’s Guy, Sun Frost, Sak Em San, Dash Ta Fame, Doc O’Lena, Hank Leo, Freckles Playboy, Doc Quixote and Frosty Feature. Ninety-two percent of the MVHS sale horses were AQHA registered horses, mostly ranch raised and trained. Prominent professional roper and AQHA expert Bill Parker, of Billings, MT, announced the sale and was the pedigree expert. Well known auctioneer Steve Friskup, of Muleshoe, Texas, ran the gavel at the ranching, roping, rodeoing and riding horse sale. The 2011 Midwest Versatility Horse Sale featured two sale previews. The first preview, the night before the sale, featured a judged Versatility Competition for the consigned sale horses. Jake Jones of Peyote, Texas, won that competition with one of his horses that he later sold To Bradley Bolek for $6,000. This red roan handy ranch-made gelding changed zip codes to Hemingford, NE. While still actively rodeoing, the World Timed Event Champion Paul Tierney, has cast his future goals on producing top notch and versatile performance horses for the ranch, the arena and for riding. The 2012 Midwest Versatility Horse Sale will again be held at the Central State Fairgrounds in Rapid City, on September 28 & 29. By next fall, Tierney and his select consignors from throughout the Midwest will have trained and have ready for market, a whole new set of roping, rodeoing and riding horses. Famed roper, “PT” Tierney takes pride is raising, training, competing and winning on his own horses. Oldest son Jesse Tierney, of Hermosa, SD, will be attending his first WNFR in Steer Roping in Guthrie, Oklahoma, in November, on a Tierney raised and trained homegrown gelding.

The Marketplace at Ardmore Sale Results Held November 5, 2011
Demand Still Strong for Show Horses! ARDMORE, OK — The Marketplace at Ardmore, a consignment auction for performance horses, held its third sale of the year on November 5, at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, OK. When asked to comment on the trend for her sales this year, sale manager Susie Reed was quick to respond with, “Show horses.” She continued, “We saw a good demand for them last spring and gauging by the calls I got leading up to this fall sale, I could pretty much predict that the trained prospects and seasoned show horses would do well.” That assumption proved to be the case with Denim And Curls, NCHA earner of $46,154, topping the sale at $30,000. This 2004 blue roan mare by Pretty Boy Boon out of Lenas Galmour Doll was consigned by Sunny White and purchased by Cynthia Harr. Second highest seller, a yearling filly by High Brow Cat and out of Hagandaz, sold for $19,500. Stylish Red Feather, a trained cutting horse by Cats Red Feather and out of Stylish Pepper, was the third highest seller, bringing $18,000. This 6-year old, consigned by Chris Cox, sold to Ronnie Pruitt. The top 10 head averaged $13,900, the top 20 averaged $9,750 and the overall average was $3,732. The next Marketplace at Ardmore Sale will be held on Saturday, January 7 at Hardy Murphy Coliseum and consignments are now being accepted.

Twombly Performance Horse Sale was held September 17th, 2011 at Coyote Slide Ranch near Scottsbluff, Nebraska. This sale marked their 15th year of offering great riding geldings to their customers. New editions were made to improve the sale, only Twombly horses were sold, they had a trail horse competition which was judged by the buyers and a great warranty to the buyers! A saddle was given to JD Doyle of Montana who ended up being the top judge of the horse competition! Cody Minton of Montana won a buckle by purchasing a weanling and winning the draw. Levenstams of California took home a saddle for buying the high selling gelding of the day! We had a good crowd on hand from 15 states and 2 countries! An own son of Topsail Whiz and by a great daughter of Hollywood Dun It! He will be a great edition to their gelding collection back in California which they purchased from the Twombly family.
