The Original Source for High-Percentage Blue Valentines

Production Sale

August 27, 2011 in Laramie, Wyoming

What are you Looking for? Blue Roans • Red Roans • Grullo Roans Great Disposition • Oustanding Conformation Versatile & Sensible • Speed & Athletic Ability

Why are we the Original Source?

Blue Valentine was a blue roan grandson of Joe Hancock that excelled in many events. He was owned by Chip Merritt’s family. We (Randy, Dick, Sam and Chip) each had some of Blue’s offspring. We wanted to preserve his bloodlines and provide a way to see the horses together in a central place. “Come To The Source” was our way to do that.

What do we offer at our sale?

Horses just like the ones here. Colorful, high-quality, ranch-raised horses. Horses that can run fast and stop hard, and that anyone can ride. Some have the classic Driftwood cross, others a touch of running blood. They all have good bone, good conformation and great dispositions. Come To The Source has produced National Foundation Quarter Horse Champions and AQHA World Show qualifiers, Pro-rodeo rope horses and Versatility class winners.

From our customers...

“Hats off to you guys for raising really great cow horses.” “I’ve ridden a lot of horses, and I place this colt I got from you in the top 1% of all of them.” “I’m hooked! It might as well be the best AND be a Blue Valentine. They have such a willingness and a whole lot of try.” “If we had any idea how nice he would turn out, we would have tried to buy another one.” “In my eyes they don’t get much better. I want you to know what a fine horse he is, and we will be there in August.”

Mares With More — Nuggett Hug by Larry Thornton

Bear Hug the sire of Nuggett Hug comes from the Five Dollar Family of horses. Five Dollars was the foundation mare for J. Frank Norfleet, a famous Texas outlaw chaser. This photo is courtesy the AQHA Hall of Fame

We often start our look at mares with more by talking about what a great runner or performer a given mare was. But many times we find the mares with more have no show or race record. This month we will look at a mare that has had an influence on several phases of the industry but she has no show record or race record to talk about and yet she has influenced each of these areas as a broodmare. The mare we’re going to look at his month is Nuggett Hug, a 1944 daughter of Bear Hug and out of Goldienug. She was bred by Sid Vail. Sid Vail was a man that had done a variety of jobs over the years that included some ranch work, some rodeo and some government service. But by the mid 1940’s he had settled down as a rancher in Douglas, Arizona. Vail had a deep interest in horses. Vail made a decision in his ranching career that would make him and a stallion named Three Bars legends in the quarter horse industry. When Vail saw Three Bars for the first time, he thought he was the stallion he had always wanted. He was his perfect horse. He bought Three Bars for $10,000 and at the height of his breeding career this great stallion had a breeding fee of $10,000. Three Bars was the stallion that many believe solidified the quarter horse as the versatile breed by giving the industry the “middle of the road” quarter horse that could run, show and halter. Sid Vail also owned Bear Hug who was a double-bred Five Dollars stallion. Five Dollars was the foundation mare for the famed outlaw hunter J. Frank Norfleet. This is the Page 16

breeding program that gave the industry such noted horses as Panzarita. Bear Hug sired several mares for Vail and he crossed them on Three Bars. Bear Hug was sired by Norfleet by *Brettneham a thoroughbred. Norfleet was out of Five Dollars by Jim Trammell by Barney Owens. The dam of Five Dollars was Old Five Dollars by Barney Owens. The dam of Bear Hug was Houseparty, who was a daughter of Five Dollars. This makes Bear Hug double bred Five Dollars with a 2 X 2 breeding pattern. The sire of Houseparty was Peter McCue, by Dan Tucker by Barney Owens. This gives Bear Hug a breeding pattern of 4 X 4 X 4 X 4 to Barney Owens. The Vail broodmare band included Goldienug, a 1940 Coke Roberds bred mare. Coke Roberds was the Colorado breeder that started with a band of Steel Dust mares. When his breeding stallion Primero died he replaced him with Old Fred. He later stood Peter McCue and this resulted in the Old Fred/Peter McCue cross that has given the industry such noted horses as Sheik P-11. Goldienug was bred along the Old Fred/Peter McCue lines. She was sired by Smokey T who was a Coke Roberds bred stallion. He was a son of a thoroughbred named Dundee. Dundee was sired by Dalston. Dundee was out of Dainty Dancer by Labold. Dundee was an Army Remount stallion. The dam of Smokey T was a daughter of Peter McCue who THE WORKING HORSE • SUMMER 2011

was out of a daughter of Old Fred. The dam of Goldienug was a mare by Champagne. Champagne was another Coke Roberds bred horse. He was sired by Dundee and out of Big Dun by Peter McCue II and out of a mare by Old Fred. This makes Goldienug double-bred

broodmare by several people. Her stakes placed colt Allegro was bred by Dorothy B. Tucker of Tucson, Arizona. Allegro was stakes placed with a second in the Nursery Handicap at La Mesa Park. He was an AAA/ROM racehorse. Bar Nug became a broodmare for the Finley Ranches of Arizona. The Finley Brothers ran the Finley Ranch and brother Tom Finley was the 1967 AQHA President. The Finley Ranches were widely known as successful breeders but today they are probably best known as the breeders of the great Doc Bar. The Finley Ranches bred Bar Nug to their AAA/AQHA Champion Casbar to get Miss Bar Nug. Miss Bar Nug was an AA/ROM racehorse. When bred to the Finley Ranches’ AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Texas Dandy they got an unshown and unraced mare named June Tune. June Tune was the dam of the stakes placed runners Midway Lass and Midway Dude.

This is Peter McCue who was an integral part of Nuggett Hug's pedigree but it was his grandsire Barney Owens that played an even bigger role in her pedigree. This Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.

Dundee with a breeding pattern of 2 X 3. The second dam of Goldienug was a mare by Old Fred. The Peter McCue blood in this mare gives Nuggett Hug a breeding pattern of 5 X 5 X 5 X 5 X 6 X 7 to Barney Owens, the grandsire of Peter McCue and Five Dollars. Goldienug was a top producer in her own right. She produced Gold Bar when bred to Three Bars for the first time. Gold Bar was a stakes winner of ten stakes races including the Central Bar and Grill Futurity, the Arizona Derby and the Bright Eyes Stakes. Gold Bar was the dam of the stakes winning stallion Real Gone. He was first across the wire in the Ruidoso Futurity and the Phoenix QH Futurity. Now that the stage is set, we will begin with the produce history of Nuggett Hug and how she made her contribution to the modern quarter horse. Nuggett Hug was bred to Three Bars to producer her first foal, Bar Nug. Bar Nug went to the racetrack to get today what would be classed as a 65speed index with one win and one second in six starts. The produce record shows that Bar Nug was used as a

A racing Three Bars with famed jockey Johnny Longden in the irons. Photo Courtesy The American Quarter Horse Journal

Then according to Nelson Nye biography of Nug Bar in his book SPEED AND THE QUARTER HORSE, Sid Vail sold Nugget Hug to Homer Pettigrew of Chandler, Arizona. Homer Pettigrew was a six time PRCA World Champion Steer Wrestler in the 1940’s and 50’s. He was the 1949 PRCA Reserve World Champion in Tie-Down Roping and a PRCA Hall of Fame member. Pettigrew reportedly bought Nugget Hug with her 1950 Three Bars foal at her side and bred back to Three Bars. The AQHA reports that Sid Vail is still listed as the breeder of both of these foals. Nug Bar was the 1950 colt on the side of Nuggett Hug when she went to Pettigrew. Nye credits Pettigrew with Continued to page 20...

Continued from page 17... starting Nug Bar on his racing career that netted him a Register of Merit with the old AAA rating. He went stakes placed in the 1952 Juvenile Invitational Handicap, the Arizona Downs Championship in 1954 and the RMQHA Stallion Stakes in 1953. He won ten of his 63 starts from 1952 to 1955. Nug Bar was sold to Pat and Grace Smith of Oakdale, California in 1955. Nug Bar became an ROM show horse earning points in cutting, working cow horse, western riding, roping and barrel racing. Nug Bar became a successful sire of both runners and show horses. His runners include Miss Mistake, Mick’s Nug Bar, Penny Bar, Nug’s Guy Bar and Nugita Texas. All of these runners earned an ROM with the old AAA rating on the track. Some of his ROM show horses include Honey B Isle, Nug Bar Jr, Zanzabar Joe, Gambler Isle, Nifty Nug and True Bars. Honey B Isle and Zanzabar Joe were two of Nug Bar’s 3 AQHA Champions. Desto Bar was a full sister to the AAA runner Nugita Texas. Desto Bar, like her sister, was an AAA rated racehorse. She was the third AQHA Champion sired by Nug Bar. She was also an AQHA Youth Champion, a Superior halter horse in the open and youth and an AQHA Supreme Champion. She was the 1969 AJQHA High Point Halter Mare as well as earning her performance ROM with points in western pleasure, calf roping, hunter under saddle, heeling and youth showmanship. She earned 124 open and youth halter points. Nug Bar sired several good producing daughters and they are lead by Treasured Isle. This AAA/ROM race mare was the dam of several runners and performers. Her produce record includes six ROM runners with one stakes placed runner and two performance ROM that earned two AQHA Championships. Isle Breeze was one of the AQHA Champions. He earned 33 halter and 39 performance points to earn his Championship. The second AQHA Champion was The Big Fix. He was not only an AQHA Champion but an AQHA Superior halter horse as well. He earned 55 halter and 25 performance points. Cosmic Treasure was a full brother to The Big Fix and he was stakes placed in the Bay Shore Juvenile Stakes. Isle Breeze was the sire of the AQHA Reserve World Champion Slide Me Again. This mare was Superior in heading and heeling. She earned 212 AQHA performance points. She is the dam of Lenas Wright On, an AQHA World Champion in Senior Working Cowhorse and an NRHA Open Futurity Champion. Lenas Wright On is a million dollar sire with foals like Coeur D Wright Stuff, NRHA Limited Open Champion and NRHA Open Derby Reserve Co-Reserve Champion and Hes Wright On NRCHA Limited Open Stakes Champion. Page 20

Miss Wonder Bar was the foal that Nuggett Hug was carrying when she was bought by Pettigrew. She was like her brother in that she went to the racetrack. She proved to be stakes winner with a win in the 1956 Bright Eyes Handicap. She finished second or third in six other stakes races garnering $12,085 on the track. She was an AAA rated runner that won 16 of her 55 starts running from 1953 to 1956. Miss Wonder Bar became the dam of several ROM runners with her most successful runner being Easter Bee by Be Sure Now (TB). This horse was a stakes winner of the Yavapai County Futurity and stakes placed with one second and three thirds in four other stakes races. Miss Wonder Bar has founded a branch of the Nuggett Hug tail female line through her daughter Que Linda. Que Linda is a ROM racing mare sired by Go Man Go. Que Linda is the dam of eight foals with seven ROM. She is the dam of two stakes winners. They are The Lynx winner of the 1974 Saila Fall Futurity. The other stakes winner is Six Te the winner of three stakes races including the Golden State Futurity (G1). Linda Te is an unplaced full sister to Six Te. This mare has her own branch of the Nugget Hug line through Miss Wonder Bar. The latest runner from this line is the 2011 Sam Houston Futurity (G2) winner Jess Tee Off. This colt traces in his tail female line through his dam Jess Linda Te, a race-winning daughter of Linda Te Chick, a multiple stakes winner of such races as the Quarter Horse Breeders Classic. Linda Te Chick is out of the stakes placed mare Dashin Linda who was third in the All American Derby (G1). Dashin Linda is out of Linda Te. Miss Wonder Bar was born in 1951 and between her birth and 1955 things get a little cloudy. We know Homer Pettigrew purchased Nuggett Hug but he never shows up as an owner in AQHA records. Then we find that she becomes the property of Roy Wales. The AQHA tells us that Sid Vail transferred Nuggett Hug to Roy Wales in 1953. She was never transferred to Homer Pettigrew. Roy was an Arizona rancher, roper and trainer. He had Nug Bar at his place when Pat and Grace Smith first saw the horse and they traded Roy a gelding for Nug Bar. This was in 1955. When we look at the AQHA produce record we see that she was the dam of two foals born in 1955. The first one is Fran Jo. But when I look at the AQHA Stud Book I find a different pedigree for Fran Jo. So apparently this is an error. When we look at Roy Wales we learn that he was a Driftwood fan. Driftwood or Speedy as he was called was the famous racing and roping stallion that came to prominence Continued on page 24... THE WORKING HORSE • SUMMER 2011

Continued from page 20... as a breeding stallion when owned by Channing and Katy Peake. Here is how Nelson Nye explained how Nuggett Hug came to be bred to Driftwood. We find this information in a November 1965 WESTERN HORSEMAN story Nug Bar …the do-it –all kind.” Nye was researching the history of Nug Bar and the horse’s owner Grace Smith got a letter from Katy Peake and we quote parts of that letter “Nuggett Hug never did belong to me. I had her on the ranch for Roy Wales, who sold her to Dale Robertson. She was a top broodmare and had, I believe, at least two other AAA foals, before Roy acquired her.”

Nuggett Hug produced three foals by Driftwood. They were Wooden Nugget, Quick A Lick and Hug Me Tight. Hug Me Tight was the first and she is listed as foaled in 1955. This would show that Nuggett Hug was bred to Driftwood in 1954 after she foaled Dandy Bear. Hug Me Tight was unshown in the AQHA but through her descendants we have a very powerful line of horses tracing in the tail female line to Nuggett Hug. Hug Me Tight was the dam of Hug Me Chick. Hug Me Chick was an NCHA money earner and a noted roping horse. He was inducted into the Stock Horse Hall of Fame as a working stock horse on the California Circuit. This stallion in turn was the sire of Hug Me Chiquita. She earned

Peake continued in the letter, “While she was here, she had a Texas Dandy colt, Dandy Bear, a gelding and rope horse. She also had a Driftwood colt, the stallion Wooden Nugget, which we are standing along with Speedy Peake. Wooden Nugget was never run but is making a fine working events horse and will be shown at reining, roping, cutting and pleasure. The mare, herself, had a lot of substance and character.” Dandy Bear is listed in the AQHA as an appendix bred horse. The records show that his sire and dam are unknown. The timing of the transfer of Nuggett Hut to Roy Wales shows that Dandy Bear could very easily be Nuggett Hug’s 1954 foal. Page 24

$7,798.78 in the NCHA with a Certificate of Ability. She was a Superior cutting horse in the AQHA. She earned 61 AQHA points. When they bred Hug Me Chiguita back to her sire Hug Me Chick, they got Hug Me Chickadee who was an NCHA money earner and AQHA point earner. She was the dam of Dry Darlena, winner of $97,953.91 and Lenachick, winner of $70,766.87. Lenachick was the dam of Playboys Ruby. Playboys Ruby was an NCHA Non-Pro Super Stakes Champion and an NCHA Non-Pro Derby Reserve Champion in 1992. She was a double winner at the 1991 Memphis Futurity winning both the open and Non-Pro as well as being the Champion at the Non-Pro in the Will Rogers Futurity and the Augusta NonPro Futurity. Continued from page 24... Playboys Ruby took her show record and moved into the broodmare band to become just as successful as a producer. She is the dam of foals that have won over $1.5 million and counting. She has seven foals that have won of $200,000 and they include Jack Ruby, Little Janey Lena, Playin CD and Ruby Tuesday DNA. Ruby Tuesday DNA is the dam of Hydrive Cat an NCHA Futurity Champion Stallion. One of the leading sons of First Down Dash is Dash Ta Fame, a stakes winner of the Golden State Futurity (G1) and the Primero Del Ano Derby (G2). The dam of Dash Ta Fame is Sudden Fame, who is out of Bar Dearie. Bar Dearie was a stakes winner in the Zia Handicap. Bar Dearie is out of Barred Girl. Barred Girl is out of Barred Hug, a daughter of Hug Me Tight. Dash Ta Fame is now the all time leading sire of barrel racing money winners. His foals have earned over $6,000,000 and counting. His leading money winners include Famous Silk Panties, winner of $288,017 while winning five futurity championships. Dash Ta Fame is the #1 stakes siring son of First Down Dash. His runners have earned over $16 million. He is the sire of over 190 stakes horses. His leading stakes winners include Gun Battle, the winner of $669,449. Quick A Lick was the next Driftwood foal out of Nuggett Hug. She was foaled in1956. This mare earned one AQHA performance point. She was the dam of several foals with only one earning any AQHA points. The point earner was Hit And Win by Direct Hit. Quick A Lick was the dam of Warwood, a mare by War Chant. Warwood was the dam of Woody Wood Chex. Woody Wood Chex was the dam of Smart Nancy Chex. Smart Nancy Chex was a 2000 NRCHA Open and Limited Open Hackamore Classic finalist. This mare earned 24.5 AQHA performance points. Wooden Nugget was the third foal by Driftwood and out of Nuggett Hug. This stallion was a noted performer and roping horse. Wooden Nugget became a noted reined cow horse that reportedly won seven of 15 shows on the California Circuit in 1964 and 1965. As a roping horse he won such rodeos as

Wooden Nugget Page 28

Pendleton, Ellensburg and Walla Walla. Wooden Nugget was retired after an injury that ended his career. Wooden Nugget sired a limited number of foals. They include Driftwood Bars, an AQHA Champion with 29 open halter and 29 open performance points. The AQHA reports that Nuggett Hug changed hands again in 1957 when Wales sold her to Dale and Chet Robertson’s Haymaker Farms of Yukon, Oklahoma. Her produce record shows that she added to her produce record with six more foals. This included foals by three different stallions. She produced Fire Star by Spanish Fort that went AA/ROM on the racetrack. Her two foals by Rebel Cause ran AAA times with The Walkin Boss being a stakes placed runner in the 1967 Magic Empire Winter Futurity and the Magic Empire Spring Futurity. Running Reb was not only AAA on the track but he earned two open halter points and .5 open performance points. Rue Charge was an unraced daughter of Nuggett Hug. This mare was the dam of two ROM racehorses and granddam of two ROM racehorses. The last owner of Nuggett Hug was B. L. Littleton. She produced only one foal for Littleton. That foal was Miss Pacific Jet. She was sired by Pacific Jet. Miss Pacific Jet was the granddam of Rubix Cube, an NCHA money winning cutting horse. Nuggett Hug was a broodmare that started life on the ranch that stood the legendary Three Bars. She went from their out into the world to contribute where ever she went. She was successful with her cross on Three Bars. She contributed to the legend of Driftwood as a sire of great horses. Then she spent several years contributing to Haymaker Farms, one of the legendary breeding farms of the fifties and sixties. She is truly one of our “Mares with More.”

The Working Lines Some Famous Nicks and Their Influence Today Part 2 by Larry Thornton We will continue this month with our pedigree review of the 2010 AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year. The 2010 winners are Eightys Sport (Sweetness) in Tie Down Roping; RA Sonoita Silver (Vegas) in Heading; Fine Snip Of Doc (Cave Man) in Heeling; Dashs Dapper Star (Wick) in Steer Wrestling; Judge Buy Cash (Jethro) in Barrel Racing and Skips Harlan Tyree (Pops) in Steer Roping. Our Part One of this review concentrated on the 2010 AQHA/PRCA Steer Roping Horse of the Year Skips Harlan Tyree. This time around we will take a look at the other five rodeo horses of the year by looking at some common blood they have between them. When we left Skips Harlan Tyree we were just introducing the Leo blood that he carries. The sire of Skips Harlan Tyree was Drifta Bar. The dam of Drifta Bar is Spanish Sheila by Scorpio Son by Win Or Lose. Win Or Lose was a son of Mr Bar None by Three Bars and his dam was Lady Leo by Leo. This is an example of one of the great nicks of all time Three Bars and Leo. When we look at the other five horses that were winners of this prestigious award, we see that Leo is a common bond they all carry. So this month we will look at these famous rodeo horses and focus on Leo and some of the nicks that worked with this AQHA Hall of Fame stallion. J. W. House of Cameron, Texas, bred Leo. Leo was sired by Joe Reed II and out of Little Fanny. Leo was what was commonly called a “Short Horse.” A horse that was noted for his power and speed to run a race that usually went from 220 to 350 yards. He was a highly successful runner whose official race record shows that he won 20 of 22 official starts. This is Leo winning a race but the information about the race is missing. It clearly looks like he has won by a large margin. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.

Page 40

Leo went through a series of owners and then Bud Warren of Perry, Oklahoma, purchased him in 1947. Warren was a self described “Short Horse Man.” He strongly believed in the quarter horse that could run short with power and speed. Warren described Leo this way, “He was so muscular that he looked like a weightlifter in a man. Just so powerful all over. He was not thoroughbredy. He was kind of high headed and real high in the wither, but he was a musk ox. He would knock your eye out to look at him. He looked like a bear.” Warren continued, “He certainly didn’t look like a thoroughbred at all. But he had blinding speed and power and that combined with some of the other refinements of the thoroughbred and made great short runnin’ horses and of course in those days we didn’t run very far—300 yards was a pretty good distance.” When Warren bought Leo, he was a crippled stallion with bad knees and injured stifle. Despite the injuries, Leo soon proved to be a great breeding stallion. He started off his breeding career by siring the winners of eight of the first ten runnings of the Oklahoma Futurity; the first recognized futurity for quarter horses. They were Leota W, Garrett’s Miss Pawhuska, Leola, Mona Leta, Fanny Leo, Leo Star Lady, Miss Adelita and Rosa Leo. The first seven Oklahoma Futurities were run at 220 yards and then in 1954 the race went to 300 yards. You will note these Leo winners were all fillies. The pedigree of Leo gives us some insight into where his speed and power came from. He was inbred to the legendary Joe Reed P-3 as his sire Joe Reed II the 1942-43 Domino was the common denomenator that provided the blood affinity between Three Bars, Leo and Sugar Bars. Photo Courtesy Keeneland Library

THE WORKING HORSE • SUMMER 2011

World Champion Quarter Running Stallion was sired by Joe Reed P-3. The dam Leo was Little Fanny and she was sired by Joe Reed P-3. This gives Leo a breeding pattern of 2 X 2 to Joe Reed P-3. Joe Reed P-3 was a son of Joe Blair, a thoroughbred who is most noted today as the challenger that was defeated by the great race mare Pan Zarita when she set a world record for 5/8 of a mile. The dam of Joe Reed P-3 was Della Moore, the famous Cajun Running-bred mare. She was sired by Old D. J. or Dedier as he was called in Louisiana. The dam of Della Moore was a mare named Belle that was sired by Shamrock. The dam of Joe Reed II was Nellene by Fleeting Time. Fleeting Time was an Army Remount stallion sired by High Time. High Time is the famous inbred Domino horse. His sire was Ultimus, who was sired by Commando by Domino. Ultimus was out of Running Stream by Domino. The dam of High Time was Noonday by Domino. This makes High Time inbred with a breeding pattern of 3 X 3 X 2 to Domino. Nellene was out of Little Red Nell. Little Red Nell was sired by Brown Billy by Pancho by Old Billy and out of Paisiana. This takes us back to the Old Billy/Paisiana cross in such noted horses as John Crowder, the broodmare sire of Old Fred. Little Red Nell was out of Red Nell by Texas Chief by Lock’s Rondo. Little Fanny was out of Fanny Ashwell, by Ashwell. Little Fanny was out of Fanny Richardson. This mare was out of Sister Fanny. Leo put Bud Warren in the breeding business and to keep things progressing Warren felt he needed a good stallion to cross on his Leo mares. Warren was hearing a lot about a horse named Three Bars who was just establishing his credentials as a sire. So Warren thought it best to find a son of Three Bars. He chose Sugar Bars and this stallion becomes a key figure in the success of the Three Bars/Leo nick. Sugar Bars was bred by George E. Continued on page 44... THE WORKING HORSE • SUMMER 2011

Wood of El Paso, Texas. He became a racehorse and was rated AAA on the track with his ROM. He had 30 starts with seven wins and placed in 12 other races. Sugar Bars was sired by Three Bars and out of Frontera Sugar. Three Bars was sired by Percentage. Percentage was a stakes winning son of Midway by Ballot by Voter. The dam of Percentage was Gossip Avenue by Bulse by Disguise. Disguise was by Domino. The dam of Three Bars was Myrtle Dee by Luke McLuke. Luke McLuke was sired by Ultimus a double-bred Domino stallion that was the sire of High Time. This makes Three Bars 5 X 5 X 5 to Domino and this Domino blood shows the blood affinity between Three Bars, Leo and Sugar Bars. Frontera Sugar was sired by Rey by Captains Courageous. Captains Courageous was sired by Stimulus by Ultimus. Thus we have the blood of Domino appearing on both sides of the pedigree of Sugar Bars and that adds to our blood affinity between Three Bars, Leo and Sugar Bars. This is how Warren described his success with Sugar Bars, “He got real popular, he was a Three Bars, a AAA racehorse, a beautiful chestnut sorrel and everybody that would see him would fall in love with him…That’s all there was to it. It was just having the right horse at the right time. And of course I had ole Leo and the two crossed together.” This is the start of the Leo/Sugar Bars cross and where we will take up with our look at the rest of the AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year. The first one we will look at is Fine Snip of Doc. This 2001 bay gelding was the 2010 AQHA/ PRCA Heeling Horse of the Year. He was owned and ridden by Jade Corkill. Fine Snip Of Doc (Cave Man) has no AQHA show record to report. He was bred by Stuart C. Robinson of Saco, Montana. The sire of Fine Snip Of Doc is Snip Of Colonel, a 1984 NCHA money-earning son of the 1976 NCHA Open Futurity Champion Colonel Freckles. Colonel Freckles went on to sire the winners of over $5,000,000. The NCHA FutuA racing Three Bars with famed jockey Johnny Longden in the irons. Photo Courtesy The American Quarter Horse Journal

rity Champion Colonel Lil and Cols Lil Pepper, an NCHA Futurity Reserve Champion head the Colonel Freckles list of winners. The sire of Colonel Freckles was Jewel’s Leo Bar or Freckles as he was called. Freckles was a successful show horse in his own right. He was an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner with $6,037 in earnings. He was an NCHA Top Ten qualifier in 1970. He was ROM in performance with points in halter, cutting and western pleasure. Freckles was sired by Sugar Bars and out of Leo Pan by Leo and thus he serves as a prime example of the Sugar Bar/Leo cross. Freckles was the sire of Freckles Playboy, the Co-Reserve Champion of the 1976 NCHA Futurity and the 1977 AQHA World Champion Junior Cutting Horse; Mia Freckles, 1976 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Champion; Jay Freckles, a multiple aged event winner and Freckles Flynt, an aged event winner. The interesting part of these performers is that Freckles Playboy, Colonel Freckles, Freckles Flynt and Jay Freckles are out of daughters of Rey Jay. Rey Jay was a King Ranch bred stallion and a great nick on Jewel’s Leo Bar. Colonel Freckles was out of Christy Jay by Rey Jay. Her dam was Christy Carol by Leo Bob by Leo. This makes Colonel Freckles double bred to Leo with a breeding pattern of 3 X 4. The dam of Snip Of Colonel was Fancy Lena by Doc O’Lena, the great son of Poco Lena and Doc Bar. Doc O’Lena was the winner of the 1970 NCHA Open Futurity. He became a leading sire with foals like CD Olena, an NCHA Open Futurity Champion and Leantoo, an NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Champion, Leanette, an NCHA Open Futurity Champion Fancy Lena was out of No No Josie by High Time Billy by Billy Van. Her dam was Miss Josie Texas by Little Texas. Miss Josie Texas was out of Ott Bo Josie. The dam of Fine Snip Of Doc is Fine Crystal Doc, a 1984 daughter of Doc O Dynamite and out of Miss Fine Crystal. Fine Crystal Doc is an S Ranch bred mare. This famous Continued on page 48... Three Bars revolutionized the quarter horse breed and he was able to do by his ability to nick with mares like the Leo Daughters. Photo Courtesy The American Quarter Horse Journal.

ranch was founded by John Scott Sr. and is still operating today by the Scott Family. The power of the S Ranch is found in the fact that they have been an AQHA Best Remuda Award winner. Fine Crystal Doc is sired by the Scott Ranch sire Doc O Dynamite, a son of Doc O’Lena. This gives Fine Snip of Doc a 3 X 3 breeding pattern to Doc O’Lena. Doc O’Lena has proven to be a great sire with his son Smart Little Lena leading the way as one of only three NCHA Triple Crown winners (NCHA Open Futurity, Open Derby and Open Superstakes). Smart Little Lena serves as an example of the success of Doc O’Lena on Peppy San the 1967 NCHA Open World Champion Cutting Horse. Peppy San is a grandson of Leo. Thus we have a nick between Doc O’Lena and Peppy San mares that represent the Leo sire line. Some others that show this affinity are CD Olena, $170,706.47; Lenas Dynamite, $265,763.82; Sanolesa, $188,256 and Doc O Leo, $201,917.76 and Sonitalena, $224,771.83. We have a blood affinity between Doc O’Lena and the blood of Leo. Doc Bar is the sire of Doc O’Lena. Doc Bar was out of Dandy Doll. Dandy Doll was out of Bar Maid F, who was out of Nelly Bly. Nelly Bly was sired by Red Joe Of Arizona by Joe Reed-3. Joe Reed P-3 being the double grandsire of Leo. Doc O Dynamite was out of Gay Bar Dixie. This daughter of Gay Bar King was out of Little Dixie Lee by Dixie’s Roper. One of the great performers sired by Doc O’Lena was Scarlett O Lena winner of $245,964.21. She was in the top ten performers sired by Doc O’Lena and she was out of a daughter of Gay Bar King. The next stallion that we will concentrate on in this pedigree is Eddie 40, an early foundation sire for the Scott Ranches and as a sire for the Haythorn Land and Cattle Company. Eddie 40 is the sire of Sur Fine, who was the sire of Miss Fine Crystal, the second dam of Fine Snip of Doc. Eddie 40 is also the sire of Crystal Charm, the dam of Miss Fine Crystal. This makes Miss Fine Crystal inbred to Eddie 40 with a breeding pattern of 2 X 2. When you look up the history of the Scott Ranches on their Internet biography, you will find that the use of Eddie 40 was instrumental in the success of this breeding program. The following was written on their history explaining what happened when they bred fillies by Texas Gill and Desecho to Eddie 40, “We then bred Eddie 40 (sired by Eddie and bred by the former Best Remuda Award winner, Haythorn Land and Cattle Co. of Nebraska) to these horses’ top fillies for two years. I really feel that the Eddie 40 horses were some of the best that we ever raised. They had everything a cowboy could want; lots of cow, easy to ride, good balance, soft mouth, and heart that would not Page 48

quit.” We see this breeding pattern in the pedigree of Miss Fine Crystal, the second dam of Fine Snip Of Doc. Her sire Sur Fine was sired by Eddie 40 and out of Shurfine Miss by Desecho. Her dam Crystal Charm was sired by Eddie and out of Crystal Streak by Desecho. This makes Fine Crystal Doc inbred to the ¾ brother and sister of Sur Fine and Crystal Charm one of the successful crosses for the Scott Ranches. Desecho was a Gill Cattle Company bred horse. He was sired by the thoroughbred Glass Truckle. His dam was the famous Tonta Gal, the dam of the 1952 Champion ThreeYear-Old Colt Tonto Bars Gill by Three Bars. Tonto Bars Gill was the sire of Tonto Bars Hank. Glass Truckle was out of Glass Bars by Three Bars. This breeding infuses the blood of Domino through Three Bars into the mix. The pedigree of Eddie 40 is an interesting one. He is sired by Eddie. Eddie is sired by Raffles. Raffles was sired by Luke McLuke, the broodmare sire of Three Bars. Thus through Eddie 40 we have another infusion of Ultimus, the inbred Domino stallion. Crystal Streak is the fourth dam of Fine Snip Of Doc. This mare is out of Janora’s Streak. Janora’s Streak is sired by Billy Van Vacter, another stallion used on the Scott Ranches. The dam of Billy Van Vacter is Electra I, a Waggoner bred mare. Her sire is Cloverleaf. Cloverleaf is sired by Fleeting Time, the broodmare sire of Joe Reed II, the sire of Leo. We must go on! The next horse we will talk about is RA Sonoita Silver, the 2010 Heading Horse of the Year. He is nicknamed Vegas. Ronnie C. Austin of Oklahoma bred him. His owner is Turtle Powell. The sire of RA Sonoita Silver was JD Playin Gun, an NCHA money winning son of Playgun, a major winner in the NCHA winning such titles as an 1996 Augusta Open and Non-Pro Futurity. Playgun has proven to be a very successful sire with his foals earning over $7.3 million. His leading money winner to date is Mr. Beamon, winner of $315,311.40. Playgun brings us back to the Sugar Bars/Leo cross only this time through his sire Freckles Playboy. Freckles Playboy was sired by Jewel’s Leo Bar, who is sired by Sugar Bars and out of Leo Pan by Leo. His dam was the great producer Gay Jay by Rey Jay. Freckles Playboy went on to sire the winners of over $26 million. Miss Silver Pistol was the dam of Playgun. She was sired by Doc’s Hickory and out of Pistol’s Lady 2 Be. Miss Silver Pistol was the winner of $512,755.49 as the 1985 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Champion and the 1986 Co-Reserve Championship of the NCHA Open Superstakes. Her foals have won $465,324.97 in the cutting pen.

The interesting part of the pedigree of Miss Silver Pistol comes through her dam Pistols Lady 2 Be. This mare is a daughter of King’s Pistol, the first stallion to win an NCHA Open World Championship. He did it in 1957. The sire of King’s Pistol was King P-234. But it is through the dam of King’s Pistol that takes up back to Leo. Her name is Flit by Leo. This gives Playgun a blood affinity between his sire and dam through Leo’s daughters Leo Pan and Flit. The dam of JD Playin Gin is Little Desi. This mare is a daughter of Winnin Doc, who earned $132,788.07. Winnin Doc is a full brother to Miss Katie Quixote, the 1987 NCHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion. The sire of Winnin Doc is Doc Quixote, who was 1973 NCHA NonPro Futurity Champion. His sire was Doc Bar and his dam was Magnolia Gal by Bull’s Eye by Joe Reed II giving us another tie to Leo through Leo’s sire Joe Reed II. The dam of RA Sonoita Silver was Double D Ms Sadie. This mare was sired by Tee J Joe Boy by the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Jackie Bee. The dam of Double D Miss Sadie was Skip Sadie by Flying Rouge, who was sired by Sugar Bars. Thus we have the Sugar Bars blood affinity between RA Sonoita Silver’s sire and dam. Our next pedigree profile is Eightys Sport the 2010 PRCA/AQHA Tie-Down Roping Horse of the Year. This 1993 sorrel gelding nicknamed Sweetness is bred by Bobby Cude of Texas. Eightys Sport is owned by Karen Herbst and Spur Resources 1 in Whiteboro, Texas. He earned over $90,000 during 2010 for his riders and those riders include three Wrangler NFR finalists Clint Cooper, Trent Creager and Fred Whitfild. Eightys Sport has a strong show record in the AQHA. He was the 2005 and 2006 AQHA World Champion TieDown Roping Horse. He has earned $26,156.31 in the AQHA World Show. He was third in the 2007 and 2010 AQHA World Show Tie-Down Roping. He finished sixth in this event in the 2003 World Show. He has 153 AQHA Tie-Down Roping points with a Superior in this event. Eightys Sport introduces us to the third phase of the Bud Warren breeding program. Warren had used Sugar Bars and Leo to make his breeding program successful but then he added Jet Deck to the stallion roster. As you will see Jet Deck was a perfect cross for the Warren breeding program. Jet Deck came with good credentials. He was the 1963 AQHA World Champion Quarter Running Horse. He was the leading money winning racehorse of all time when he retired winning $200,265. He added such racing titles as the Champion Three-Year-Old; Champion Three-Year-old Colt; Champion Two-Year-Old and Champion Two-YearOld Colt to go with his World Championship. Jet Deck was sired by Moon Deck by Top Deck. Top Page 54

Deck had the common bond with horses like Three Bars and Leo in that he carried the blood of Domino. Top Deck was sired by Equestrian by Equipoise by Pennant by Peter Pan. Peter Pan was sired by Commando by Domino. The second cross of Domino in Top Deck’s pedigree comes through his dam River Boat by Chicaro. Chicaro was out of Wendy by Peter Pan making Top Deck 4 X 4 to Peter Pan, a grandson of Domino. When Moon Deck was bred to daughters of Barred he made one of the great contributions to quarter horse racing we have ever seen. This resulted in not only Jet Deck but Top Moon as well. Jet Deck was out of Miss Night Bar by Barred and Top Moon was out of Rica Bar by Barred. The mating of Moon Deck with Barred mares has a blood affinity. It comes from Barred through his sire and dam. Barred was a son of Three Bars (5 X 5X 5 Domino. He was out of Ready by Red Joe Of Arizona. Red Joe Of Arizona was sired by Joe Reed P-3 and he was out of Little Red Nell. This makes Red Joe Of Arizona a ¾ brother to Joe Reed II, the sire of Leo. This then gives us a blood affinity between Bud Warren’s Leo and Sugar Bars mares that Jet Deck crossed so well with. With all this in mind we will get back to pedigree of Eightys Sport. The sire of Eightys Sport was Easy Eighty, who has an 80-speed index on the track. Easy Eighty is a son of the 1967 AQHA World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse Easy Jet by Jet Deck. The pedigree of Easy Jet has its own blood affinity to Percentage, the sire of Three Bars. Jet Deck who was out of the Barred mare Miss Night Bar gets the first cross of Percentage through Three Bars. Lena’s Bar was the dam of Easy Jet was sired by Three Bars and that gives us the second cross to Percentage. The third cross to Percentage in Easy Jet comes from Perhobo, the dam of Lena’s Bar. This mare is sired by Percentage. This gives Easy Jet a 5 X 4 X 3 breeding pattern to Percentage. Percentage traced to Domino through Disguise as his dam Gossip Avenue is a granddaughter of Disguise by Domino. The dam of Easy Eighty was the race mare Runnymede. Runnymede was sired by Sugar Bars and out of Rosita Leo. Rosita Leo was a daughter of Leo and the mare Breeze. Breeze by Doc Horn was one of the two mares that defeated Leo. When Rosita Leo was bred to Jet Deck, she produced the AQHA Supreme Champion Jet Threat. When bred to Easy Jet, Rosita Leo was the dam of Easy Decision, the sire of Mr Bar Easy. Mr Bar Easy has won six AQHA World Championships and six Reserve World Championships in pole bending and barrel racing in the open and youth divisions. The dam of Eightys Sport was Moonie Sport. This mare was sired by Moon’s Sport by Top Moon. Top Moon was a 7/8 brother to Jet Deck. Thus we have the Moon Deck/ Barred cross again. The dam of Moon’s Sport was Sports’s Continued on page 56..

Blue Hen by Sports Page. Sports Page was out of Miss Adelita by Leo. Miss Adelita was one of those Oklahoma Futurity winners we cited at the beginning of our look at these horses. The dam of Moonie Sport was King Kay Leo by Fast Time Leo. This son of Leo was out of Shady Lena by Sugar Bars and Shady Lena out of Lena Leo by Leo. Lena Leo was out of Lena Horn; a daughter of Julie W. Julie W was the dam of Flit, who was the dam of King’s Pistol. This makes Fast Time Leo inbred to Leo with a 1 X 3 breeding pattern. Our next horse to look at is Judge Buy Cash. This 1999 son of Judge Cash was the 2010 PRCA/AQHA Horse of the Year in Barrel Racing. He is nicknamed Jethro and was bred by Deanna Haggard of Oregon. He is owned by Frank and Lynne Mays and ridden by Brenda Mays. The first Sugar Bars/Leo blood to show up in Judge Buy Cash’s pedigree comes through the female family of his sire Judge Cash. The second dam of Judge Buy Cash is Shelly Leo Bar by Sundown Pow Wow, a son of Sugar Bars. The dam of Sundown Pow Wow is Golddigger W by Joe Reed II. The dam of Shelly Leo Bar is Waja Leo by Leo Van by Leo. Thus we have a combination of Sugar Bars, Joe Reed II and Leo in this female family. The next Leo blood in Judge Buy Cash comes from this dam Flashs PollyVandy and her sire Mr Tiffin Flash. Mr Tiffin Dash is sired by Rocky Jip by Rocky Jeff by Colorado’s Leo Joe by Leo. The dam of Rocky Jip is Rocky VI by Joe Sunday by Joe Reed P-3. The dam of Flashs Polly Vandy was Morgan Vandy by Yankee Vandy by Easy Vandy by Vandy. Vandy was out of Jean Ann Blair, a daughter of Joe Blair, the sire of Joe Reed P-3. Our last profile is of Dashs Dapper Star. Dashs Dapper Star is a 1997 gelding that was the 2010 AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year in Steer Wrestling. He was bred by Fred Ballard in Oklahoma. He is owned by Wade Sumpter and Ken Lewis. This grandson of Dash For Cash gives us several examples of how Leo crossed with other prominent bloodlines. These examples all come in the female family of this good gelding. His dam is Miss Merry Four. She is sired by Minus Four, who is out of Pat’s Filly by Jet Deck Junior. Jet Deck Junior gives us another example of Jet Deck on a Leo bred mare. His dam is Drift by Leo.

Lady Coolidge, a full sister to Dixie Beach the dam of Harlan. Ruthie Warren is the dam of Specs Leolena. Ruthie Warren was sired by Leo Bingo by Leo and Leo Bingo was out of Beggar Girl. Beggar Girl was sired Beggar Boy by Black Toney. Black Toney was sired by Peter Pan by Commando by Domino. The dam of Beggar Boy was Useeit by Bonnie Joe. Bonnie Joe was the sire of Joe Blair, the sire of Joe Reed P-3. The dam of Beggar Girl was Baldy Girl by Oklahoma Star P-6. The tie between Oklahoma Star and Leo depends on who is actually the sire of Cutthroat. Although the AQHA Stud Book tells us different many sources say that Bonnie Joe is the sire of Cutthroat. If this is the case, then Oklahoma Star and Leo have that blood affinity through Bonnie Joe. Our goal this month was to take a look at the role of the Leo and his nick with several other bloodlines. We have left other nicks found in their pedigrees out, as we don’t have enough room for all of it. But then again maybe we can come back to this later and take another look. But for now we can see how Bud Warren and his breeding program played a key role in the modern quarter horse. What makes all of this interesting is the blood affinities between the primary-breeding stallions he used. That was our goal.

Larry Thornton is a pedigree analyst and breeding consultant. If you have any questions concerning this article or other bloodlines, call Larry at 479-885-3144 (evenings) Please try again if you do not reach Larry the first time.

Joe Reed II was a key link in the Three Bars/Leo nick as he carried the Domino blood for the Leo line. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.

Drift was out of Midnight Molly by Chief P-5, the last breeding son of Peter McCue. The dam of Midnight Molly was Grace H by Oklahoma Star P-6. Grace H was reported to be out of Cutthroat the dam of Oklahoma Star P-6. More on that in a moment. The sire of Miss Merry Four was Specs Leolena by Merry Leo by Leo. The dam Merry Leo was Merry Legs E by Bert P-227. Bert was sired by Tommy Clegg. Bert was out of Page 56

onoring a Legend— rings the Legends Together! by Larry Thornton

This picture shows from left to write Randy Magers, Billy Bush, Bubba Cascio, Stanley Bush and John Carter. A lot of cutting and racing history goes with these guys. Randy grew up with these men as his father Cliff Magers was prominent in the 1950's owning such great horses as Poco Tivio. So this was a very special day for Randy and the rest of us. Another legend not pictured in this group was Harry Tompkins famed bull riding champion. The legend of Royal King is widely known in the modern quarter horse industry. Royal King and his owner Earl Albin developed a family of horses that is a key ingredient in today’s quarter horse. The success of Earl Albin and his stallion led to Royal King’s induction into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 1997. To further honor this contribution to the breed, the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum has dedicated Historical Marker #31 to Royal King. The Historical Markers are a way that the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum can honor and recognized the people and horses that have made major contributions to the American Quarter Horse. The neat thing about the markers is they are set up in areas where the people and horses made their contribution giving the public some insight into where these people and horses came from. The Royal King historical marker dedication ceremony took place on Saturday May 28, 2011 at the city square in Comanche, Texas. The Royal King historical marker will permanently be displayed at this location. The dedication ceremony and reception was sponsored by the Comanche Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture and Page 76

was hosted by Dan Willis.. The distinguished guest list included three of Earl and Charlie Mae Albin’s children Sue Albin Magers, Lou Albin Fulton and Billy Albin as well as their families. Ross Middleton the American Quarter Horse Foundation Director was in attendance to mark the significance of the awarding of this marker to honor this great stallion and his accomplishments. Middleton and Willis led a delegation of about 250 people who came to honor this great stallion. Middleton credited Randy Magers with bringing it all together to honor Royal King with this special marker. Randy the son-in-law of the Albins (he is married to daughter Sue) is the son of Cliff Magers, one time owner of Poco Tivio. Randy was the 2006 Bayer Select Reserve World Champion cutter riding Pepto Bar Legacy, a homebred descendant of Royal King. Randy didn’t take all the credit as he was quick to point out that it is a team effort between him and Sue. She puts the material together and he does the legwork. To further honor the legend of Royal King, the Albin family invited horseman from around the nation and area to attend this special occasion. Not everyone was

able to attend but the attendees included family members representing the late James Boucher and Weldon McConnell. Both of these men were former riders of Royal King. Some others to attend were Foster Wilcox, a long time Royal King breeder and Ralph Pitre, another Royal King breeder. But some very special people were able to attend. These honored guests were Billy Bush, Bubba Cascio, Stanley Bush, John Carter and Harry Tompkins. All of these horseman were a part of the history of this great horse and by bringing them together they brought this stallion to life. Here are some of the accomplishments of these horseman--Billy Bush rode the likes of Royal King, Heart 109, Fanny James and Jessie James to top ten finishes in the NCHA open. Bubba Cascio rode Royal Jazzy by Royal King to an NCHA top ten finish before becoming a legend as a racehorse trainer. Bubba is best known as the trainer of racing champions Dash For Cash, Rocket Wrangler and Three Ohs. Stanley Bush rode the likes of Royal Chess (by Royal King), Joe's Last, Snipper W, Alice Star to NCHA open top ten finishes. John Carter rode the likes of Jewel's Leo Bar, Hollywood Cat, Martin's Jessie, Poco Mona and Doc's Starlight to NCHA top ten finishes. Harry Tompkins is a six time PRCA Bull Riding World Champion that rode Rocky Red, a full brother to Royal King. The common theme of the day among these gentlemen was how important their association with Earl Albin was to them. Stanley Bush may have summed it up best when he recalled, “When I went to work for Earl, it was like home. They brought me into the family.”

This picture of Bubba Cascio and Stanley Bush shows what kind of day it was. These old timers were so glad to see each other to catch up on what was going on and then reminisce about the good old days and the rest of us were excited to be there to reminisce with them. Foster Wilcox of Hamilton, Texas was on hand to honor the foundation sire of his Royal King breeding program. Here he is shown looking at the pictures and memorabilia provided by the Albin family. The had in the picture was Earl's hat.

Thus this special day honored Royal King but at the same time it allowed these gentlemen to reminisce about there storied past and how it all got started. You could see how special this day was by just looking at the expressions on their faces and the stories they told making it a special day American Quarter for all involved. Horse Foundation Director Ross Middleton John Carter who told his son Roy Carter on the addressing the crowd way home, “That was the best time he had had in of about 250 Royal years.” I agree with John it was a great time and King enthusiasts about a wonderful day that I will never forget. The day the significance of this we got to help honor the legend of Royal King great stallion. and Earl Albin by hanging around with a few Photo by Judy Thornton legends that are a big part of this story.

Dennis, and Claudia along with their children Joey, Jacki, Josi, and Jet, hosted a very large crowd on a sale day that was in the middle of two solid days of rain. That didn’t damper the enthusiasm for good horses and bidding was strong throughout the day. The sale featured over 40 older performance and Ranch saddle horses along with upcoming twos and a group of yearlings all sired by the Price Ranch stud “Have Some Cat.” This was one of the premier ranch horse sales of the year. Topping the sale was lot 16 selling to Erdean and Verna Olsen, Black Hawk, SD, for $11,250. This 2004 Bay Gelding, Jacki Master was sired by Cozmo Rocket out of a Ship Master x Mr Fiestywood mare. Erdean and Verna Olsen, Black Hawk, SD, paid 10,100 to own lot 8. This 2003 Sorrel Gelding Jets Conquest “Baldy” was featured as one of the top ranch horse sale highlights. He was sired by Cozmo Rocket out of a Final Conquest -Dash for Cash mare. Fred and Lynn Hirschy, Dillon, MT paid $9,400 to own lot 6. This 2003 Bay Mare Cozmo Honey was solid in the barrels and showed well in roping. “Punk” was sired by Cozmo Rocket out of a Shipmaster x Retwist dam. Fred and Lynn Hirschy, Dillon, MT, paid $9,400 to own lot 10. This 2005 Black Mare Mercedes Cozmo, showed the speed and excellent potential to continue in the barrel racing competition and had many friends sale day. She was sired by Cozmo Rocket out of a Strawflying Buds x Royal Quick Dash mare. Merlin Ranch, Buffalo, SD, paid $8,800 to own lot 7. This 2004 Black Gelding, Strawflyin Rocket was another great son of the Cozmo Rocket stud and was out of a Strawflying Buds x Royal Quick Dash mare.
