We welcome you as you look at our new 2013 Iowa United Methodist Camp Catalog. Camp means many things to many people. For some, camp has been a tradition handed down from one family member to another while for others it will be an exciting new adventure to experience. No matter which group you fall into, camp is a safe, exciting place to know Jesus Christ better. It also is a place where new friends are made, where hopes and dreams are discovered, where memories and new stories are created, and ultimately where your faith will be discovered in a whole new way. Whether you go to the beautiful hills of Pictured Rocks, the serene hiking trails of Wesley Woods, or the sparkling blue waters of Okoboji, you will find a friendly and caring staff, a safe place to experience God, and a place to know yourself better.

Directions: From Spirit Lake: Highway 9 and 71 (Wal-Mart); Go west on 9 for 1/2 mile. Turn left (south) on 155th. Go 2 miles, turn right on 215th.

North Campus sign is on your left. From Vic’s Corner: Highways 9 and 86; Go east on Highway 9 for 2 miles.

Turn right (south) on 155th Street. Travel 2 miles, then turn right on 215th. North Campus sign is on your left.

Directions: From Cedar Rapids or Dubuque take Highway 151 to exit 65 (Monticello Airport).

Travel about 2 miles south on Highway 38 to blacktop 190th Street. Turn east on 190th Street toward Camp Courageous for 1.5 miles.

Pictured Rocks Camp is on your left.

Directions: From Des Moines take SW 9th Street exit from south bypass Highway 5 — but go south (it becomes County R-63). At the junction of Highways 92 and R-63 at the west edge of Indianola, go south on R-63 for 4-1/2 miles, then turn east on Nixon Street.

How do I register for camp?

Three ways: 1) Complete the registration form that is provided; 2) Call 1-800-765-1651 to register by phone; or 3) Register online at www.IAcampsandretreats.org.

How soon must I register for camp?

Because some events fill very fast we suggest you register as soon as possible. But as long as there is room in an event you may register as late as the Friday before the event starts.

What happens after I register?

You will receive a confirmation packet in the mail within two weeks. It will include a health form, liability waiver, horse consent form (if applicable), list of what to bring, check-in and check-out information (times/days), payment plan options and any other important information regarding your camp. If you do not receive this packet within two weeks after registering or are missing any of the documents listed, please call the Registrar at 800-765-1651 or 515-974-8946 between 8am-4pm weekdays. Or you can download the forms at any of the three camp web sites which you can find on page 2.

How may I pay for camp?

We require at least 25 percent of the camp fee with each event registration. The balance is due two weeks prior to the start of that camp.

What if we run into a situation where we are unable to come to camp after we register?

If you have to cancel for any reason we refund all except the 25% registration fee. If the event is cancelled by us, we will refund the full amount of what you have paid.

What if I need financial assistance?

We have a policy to not turn any child away from camp who wishes to come due to a family’s inability to pay. Therefore, we have created a Campership Fund that allows us to provide financial assistance to those in need. If you are in financial need, contact your local church pastor, an agency staff such as a counselor, social worker or other community service worker in your area , or a camp staff at the camp you wish to attend and learn how to apply. You may also call the camp registrar for additional information.

I am concerned about safety. How can I be certain my child will be safe at camp?

We are pleased to continue Family Discounts. After We do not offer transportation. However, we will work with you to connect with a prescreened person who is paying full price for the first child you will receive a $25 discount for each additional family member willing to transport your child to and from camp. who registers for camp.

We encourage you to bring a friend (or two!) with you to camp this summer. Make certain your friends write your name and address on their application, and we will discount your event fee by $25 for each camper* you bring.** * New campers are defined as not having been to any Iowa UM camps in the past three years. ** Discounts can only be applied toward camping event registration fees.

How are campers grouped at camp?

Campers are put into small groups based on age and gender while maintaining safe camper-to-staff ratios.

Campers may request up to one cabin mate. Be certain to make such a request on the registration form.

What do I need to bring to camp?

Your confirmation letter will provide a letter and a list of specific clothing and other items to bring from the camp director of the camp you are attending.

Remember that your clothing — especially swimwear — needs to be appropriate for a church camp.

Do I need to bring money to camp?

Our sites have camp stores where you may purchase items. These are open on registration day and on the last day of camp. Your camp fee includes snacks and some items from the store that you receive during your stay. See the confirmation packet letter you receive after registration for any specific money needs (offsite trips, etc.)”

What does a typical camp day look like?

Each camp program has its uniqueness; however, most will include a daily schedule that includes the activities highlighted by the session chosen, Journey times, worship and Bible study, three meals, rest, swimming, and evening activities.

We are proud that our United Methodist Camps are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), the national accrediting body for camping programs and a leader in childhood development, education and welfare. To earn accreditation, camps must comply with up to 300 health, safety, and program quality standards. Across the country, only one in four camps seeks and earns this distinction. Okoboji, Pictured Rocks and Wesley Woods regularly review every facet of their program and operations. No accreditation process, no licensing program, no set of regulations or laws can guarantee safety. However, accreditation is evidence for parents that a camp is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for their children.

What if my child has health problems or takes medications?

Each camp has a Health Care Manager qualified to handle accidents and health issues who will oversee distribution of medications. On opening day medications are taken up and parents will verify special medical considerations we need to be aware of.

We keep medical forms you have completed on hand so we may reach you. You’ll receive detailed information regarding health care and medication needs in your confirmation packet.

What are Journeys?

These are focus areas in which campers may choose an activity or perhaps several activities to participate in each day. This allows more freedom to focus on activities you most enjoy. The Journey options vary from camp to camp and may be dependent on the length of the camp or the specialty nature of the camp you are enrolled. If you wish for more information about Journeys at a particular camp or about the activities in general, we encourage you to call and speak directly with the camp staff at the camp you are interested in attending.

For our week-long campers, you can’t go wrong with any of Okoboji’s Adventure Camps (page 6) or Specialty Camps (Go-Karts, Amusement Parks, Teen Week and Wild Okoboji Water, page 7). Each week-long camper gets to choose their own individual Journeys (part of every week long program) to experience EVERY DAY! Okoboji’s Short Stacks (page 6) events are a HUGE HIT with our 6–9 year old campers! They will experience a SHORT time at camp that is STACKED with activities, faith and fun! Swimming? Roasting Marshmallows? Archery? Games? You got it!

Family Camps at Okoboji are growing by leaps and bounds; you don’t want to miss out! BRAND NEW this year is the Okoboji Family Camp (page 6), a two-night event that brings adults and campers together for a time no one will forget! Long standing and ever popular, the Guardian & Angel (page 6) events continue to give our youngest campers the opportunity to experience camp with a special adult in their life. There’s more than just summer camp at Okoboji, too! Springtime events such as the famous Walleye Weekend Getaway (page 5) and iSync Youth Lock-In (page 5) are available for folks to truly make Okoboji Camp a popular year round destination.

At Okoboji Camp, we are excited to be a place where traditional camp activities like archery, swimming and campfires are blended with exciting adventure activities like go-karts, rock climbing and Rock-A-Boji. More than just dynamic programs, however, all camping events at Okoboji are designed to create an environment where Christ’s message is shared in word and deed. It’s going to be a summer to remember at Pictured Rocks!

Summer Kickoff a taste of camp

New Mission Opportunity for Youth 2–8 pm

Come check out Pictured Rocks and learn more

This summer we will explore the theme “All about the camp during an afternoon of fun and Things New” and encourage campers to think food — all at no cost! This is a great opportunity about how the love of Christ can change us from for you to experience what camp is all about, the inside out. We will encourage campers to go meet our staff, and sample some camp activities deeper in their own faith as well as explore ways including swimming, s ’mores, dinner and much they can encourage and love others by allowing more. Please call or email the camp office God’s will to reflect in their actions, thoughts and (see page 2) by Saturday May 18th to let us know words. In celebration of that theme we are working you will be joining us. to keep the camp experience at Pictured Rocks “new” or as exciting as the first time a camper attended. This means that campers will arrive at camp and experience some new activities, have Typical Camper Day more opportunities to choose the activities they want to do and find new surprises along the way.

Encounter:

Harvesting Hope, Discovering Joy & Developing Leaders Ages 12–18

July 7–12

This summer, join us for a new kind of Encounter. This event is rooted in serving others missionally, but is equally a leadership training experience. The goal of Encounter is that youth will not simply have the opportunity to serve others, but will learn how to be leaders in their own community by actively participating in the Body of Christ.

Youth will train with/learn from pastors active in local outreach ministries, participate in intentional worship experiences and work alongside the Matthew 25 Ministry in Cedar Rapids serving the local community in a variety of ways. This opportunity will start at Pictured Rocks with training sessions, team building and a variety of camp activities. On Tuesday we will transition to Cedar Rapids and stay in the community we are serving.

This camp is open to both youth groups and individual youth. Youth groups must send adult leaders. Groups need one adult for every 6 youth with at least one of each gender if sending mixed genders. We will depart from Cedar Rapids on Friday morning. Those youth not attending with a group will return to Pictured Rocks where they can be picked up at 11:00 am.

Young Children’s Camp

This summer bring your family to Pictured Rocks and spend some time with the people you love the most. Our overnight camps are designed to make it easy for you and your child/children to enjoy time together without all the hassles that sometimes accompany a trip away. All you need to do is bring your family and we’ll do the rest.

Our Mission Camps are specifically designed for youth groups looking to have a combination of summer camp and mission experience. Youth will work on specific service projects at camp in the morning and spend afternoons enjoying staff-led camp activities. Groups are responsible for their own Bible studies, evening chapels and health services.

Groups may have up to 32 people and may choose the length of their stay. The cost is $60/person/day and includes all food, lodging, programming and project materials. Call the camp office (see page 2) to register your group for this unique service experience.

This summer let your elementary child experience camp “Summer Games” style! Kids 9-11 will enjoy Christian fun and fellowship while experiencing the power of a relationship with Jesus Christ. Camp activities include outdoor games, swimming and more. Small groups and worships will be the heart of Summer Games Jr. as we allow the Holy Spirit to touch the lives of graduated 3rd-5th graders!

What’s up at Wesley Woods?

Day Camps

Summer 2012 was spirit filled — and we can’t wait for 2013! Come enjoy horses, the Blob, Iceberg, a 3-D archery range, climbing wall, high & low ropes courses and so many more things for all ages.

The first time listed in the description is the time we have reserved for the campers to arrive and the second time listed is our check-out time. Dinner meals will be served for campers who arrive on Sunday nights or Wednesday nights.

Wesley Woods offers two types of adventures within our programs.

Inpost camping programs stay in cabins or lodges, which are air-conditioned and have bunk beds. Campers in the Inpost program will take most of their meals in the dining hall. Outpost campers stay in a variety of accommodations from the Pioneer Log Cabin to a 1918 Sears & Roebuck House to Covered Wagons. Outpost campers will cook breakfast and supper over the campfire.

All events have similarities. Campers can expect three meals and two snacks daily. Campers with special food needs are encouraged to complete the online food allergy form at wesleywoodsiowa.org before they arrive.

Camper fee includes a water bottle, group picture, and horse ride (weight limit 240 lbs.). The whole camp has daily Bible study, worship, theme days and community activities.

We are dedicated to sharing the Good News of a loving Father and a Son that covered our sins.

Campers will be encouraged to grow in their faith through testimonies, worship experiences, daily devotions and small group Bible Studies. We believe individuals grow stronger in their faith as they worship, play, pray and live in Christian community. God has blessed us with beautiful facilities, dedicated staff and tremendous support from parents, pastors and congregations. CAMP HOPE

Ages 8–12 This is an exciting camp for young people from the ages of 8–12 who have a family member who is incarcerated or has been in the past. It is an awesome time of fun and fellowship with many cool activities such as archery, swimming, fishing, rock climbing during our 3-day journey. It also will be a time for the camper to share about their hopes and dreams for the future while also knowing Jesus more in their hearts. Wesley Woods Journeys

In addition to the daily adventures every child experiences while attending camp, campers attending week-long camps have the opportunity to choose Journeys. At the start of their week, each camper will select age-specific Journeys in which they would like to participate.

Campers will focus on their selected Journeys Monday to Wednesday for approximately 60 minutes each day.

On Thursday, most campers will be given an opportunity to choose an additional Journey to try. Other campers on Thursday may do more specific activities included in the event descriptions, such as trips off-site to Blank Park Zoo or Adventureland.

Journeys are held in small groups and led by trained and experienced staff. In addition to having Journey choices, Wesley Woods campers select their own water choices which are creek stomping, or swimming in our pool or in Broken Arrow Pond. Campers indicate the number of days they are interested in doing each activity. Staff members assign campers to water activities daily according to group schedule, weather and camper desires.

Buddy Camp Consider joining our leadership development Ages 14–99 program and spending part of your summer in Be a buddy for an adult with special needs at our service to others. This training is aimed at first Exceptional Persons Camps. Just off the shores of West Lake Okoboji lies 100 acres of beautiful camp, conference and retreat opportunities in the heart of the Iowa Great Lakes vacation land. Okoboji campers enjoy a wide variety of on-site activities including high & low ropes challenge courses, off road go-karts, archery, climbing tower with zipline, disc-golf, mountain boarding, fishing, crafts, wagon rides through our rolling prairie, hiking, Bible Study, campfires, drama, music, sports, group games and MUCH MORE in the green grass of Okoboji’s park-like setting.

Come swim, canoe and tube on one of the only “blue water” lakes in the world.

Campers who choose specialty camping events also travel to amusement parks, water parks and many more of the areas hottest attractions. Campers and guests enjoy wonderful home cooked meals, clean/air-conditioned/ heated facilities and warm Christian hospitality.

The activities and opportunities that campers experience at Okoboji can stick with them for the rest of their lives! Camp provides the acceptance and support of a Christian community and positive relationships with caring adult leaders.

At Okoboji, Christ is shared in song, word, worship and example.

We provide an unforgettable summer experience, where campers can discover and explore exciting activities in a carefully supervised, Christian environment. Lives are changed forever!

Resting quietly hilltop we are nestled among abundant timber forest and rock bluffs along the scenic Maquoketa River. Onsite we offer real-rock climbing and bouldering, climbing tower with zip line, challenge course, geocaching, mountain boarding and Frisbee golf, while for offsite adventure we enjoy caving at Pictured Rocks Park and canoeing/kayaking/ tubing a 7-mile stretch of the Maquoketa River.

Our swimming is done indoor at our neighbor Camp Courageous’ pool complex where people of all ages enjoy the water rock-climbing wall, volleyball net, basketball hoop and numerous pool toys.

Our campers enjoy newly-renovated, climatecontrolled cabins and a camp experience created just for them. Our Christ-centered staff is here to support and care for those individuals that have been entrusted to us. We nurture the spiritual growth of our campers by having United Methodist Pastors/Ministers active in our summer program as Spiritual Directors. These men and women provide guidance, teaching, and encouragement to the faith formation of each and every camper.

At Pictured Rocks there is adventure around every corner, but this experience is much more than that. Through intentional community, creative play, and spiritual exploration, campers transform and return home with more confidence, clarity, and are better equipped to face their life challenges. Big things happen at Pictured Rocks where lives are changed as we encounter the love of Christ in the beauty of God’s Creation.

344 acres overlooking spectacular rolling hills and scenic valleys. We offer traditional lodging in cabins/dorms and adventure outpost camping that includes tents, a Sears & Roebuck Home, tepees, covered wagons, the farm barn — and now a log cabin.

Campers can choose from an abundance of activities — canoeing or pontoon rides on Lake Ahquabi or swimming in the pool; or Broken Arrow Pond with the iceberg and blob; or try the challenges of team building on the Stormy Hollow low ropes course or the Stormy Heights high ropes course.

We have 30 horses for trail riding or lessons in the outdoor arena or the barn. Our home cooked meals over the campfire or in the dining hall are delicious.

We have numerous chapel activities, such as stargazing, campfires, and hikes where you can experience God’s creation in a different light.

Our indoor activities include ping pong, pool, foosball, foursquare, table games; and our outdoor games include such favorites as basketball, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee and soccer.

Wesley Woods is where campers make new friends, worship Jesus, and have fun while discovering how to grow into the people God designed them to be.

Our campers are a blessing to our staff, and we are intentional about ministering through small groups to provide personalized attention for the campers. We look forward to serving them and growing in Christlike fellowship while they are here and through the stories they will share when they are home.
