Headquarters The Next Building Block is Delivered by John Boddicker, executive vice president In the August/September 2012 issue of the Voice Dr. Bob Weaber wrote an article dealing with the upcoming release of Calving Ease (CE) and Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) EPDs for the Maine-Anjou breed. I sincerely hope that you took the time to read and digest what those EPDs are about and what effect they could have on one’s breeding program. From the early days of the Maine-Anjou breed, when we did in fact have heavy birth weights resulting in dystocia problems, the extreme advancement Maine-Anjou breeders have made in this area has been documented many times. There are bulls MaineAnjou breeders have produced that have as solid calving ease factor as calving ease bulls of most any other breed. That is something the breed can be very proud of! However, the challenge of “ Perception vs. Reality” is a barrier the breed has had difficulty getting past. The CE and MCE EPDs are usable tools that document Maine-Anjou bloodlines that provide calving ease genetics to one’s breeding program. To reiterate what Dr. Weaber wrote in his article, “the new CE EPD describes the relative differences in additional percentage of sire’s calves born unassisted. The MCE EPD describes the additional percentage of a sire’s daughter’s calves that are born unassisted. EPD values that are more positive are viewed as more favorable than negative values. For instance, if bull
A has a CE EPD of +7 and bull B has a CE EPD of +2, then when mated to cows of similar genetic background, age and environment, we’d expect five percent more unassisted births (five percent fewer assists) in bull A’s calves than bull B’s.” Breeders should exclusively use the CE EPD for selection of service sires to minimize dystocia in first calf heifers. The American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) has always stressed the importance of as much accurate information as possible to be submitted when registering your calf crop. With the incorporation of the CE EPD and MCE EPD in an animal’s performance profile it is highly important to correctly submit the calving ease data when registering. Please familiarize yourself with the current calving codes when sending in your information. 1. Unassisted 2. Easy Pull 3. Hard Pull (puller used) 4. Caesarean 5. Abnormal Presentation 6. Commercial Connection 2012 National Maine-Anjou Feed Trial Underway! by Dave Steen, commercial development director
It’s been a wonderful fall despite the ongoing drought throughout most of the country. With the feed and water supply in such a drastic shortage, I still found producers with an upbeat sense of humor and the resilience to stay positive and succeed. Things will improve, they always do. Thank you to all of the producers for allowing me to stop and see their operations, great Maine-Anjou cattle and hear about the positive experiences since incorporating the Maine-Anjou breed into their beef operations. It was wonderful to meet so many new producers as they all were encouraged with the farm economy due in part to the increased prices of commodities and record setting cattle prices. In the last few months, Maine-Anjou influenced cattle have sold at the very top end of prices on Superior’s video auction. A load of 585 lb. Colorado Maine-Anjou steers brought $1.85 per pound for $1,082.25 per head, two loads of Kansas Maine-Anjou cross steers weighing 650 lb. brought $1.64 per pound for $1,066 per head and 525 lb. Maine-Anjou steers at $1.78 per pound sold for $934.50 per head. Thank you to these two firms who both advertised their calves as Maine-Anjou cross calves. To those of you that are going to sell your stock, please remember these MaineAnjou calves are in high demand by feedlots and the buyers have to be made aware of what they are. I encourage everyone to advertise your calves as MaineAnjou! Our cattle do not have to take a second seat to any breed! Also brought to my attention during my last trip was that only one seedstock producer was aware that our national feeding trial was taking place this fall. I have again included the information in this article concerning this trial for the last time. At this point in time we have had good outside interest along with many calls and some delivery commitments concerning the trial. are still considering, there is plenty of time to enter your cattle. We have additional delivery dates set for Nov. 14 and Dec. 12 but delivery can be any time that works for producers between now and December. Everyone’s support would be very much appreciated, whether it’s one head or hundreds. Please read through the information and call me at (515) 201-3281 with any questions you might have. The American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) would greatly appreciate your support! The upcoming AMAA National Maine-Anjou Influenced Feeding Trial that will be held this fall in conjunction with the Tri-County Steer and Heifer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF) is located in Lewis, Iowa. The TCSCF began in 1982 with 35 Iowa producers consigning 105 steers for feedlot and carcass evaluation, ultimately tracking feedlot profitability animal-by-animal. The futurity is associated with nine feedlots all located in southwest Iowa. These feedlots have been associated with the futurity for years and all do an outstanding job of feeding and caring for the cattle. The TCSCF board of directors direct the program with oversight by the Iowa State University extension staff. Mr. Darrell Busby, Iowa State University Beef Specialist for southwest Iowa, has managed this very successful futurity since its beginning in 1982. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Busby and have him oversee our trial. This year he will also assist in the data collection, genetic evaluation, marketing and sorting. In the last seven years, the TCSCF has evaluated more than 40,000 cattle from 13 states. Their reputation is impeccable. On July 6, Darrell Busby, Mike Holden and myself traveled to Gregory Feedlots, Tabor, Iowa to meet with owner, Jim Gregory and feedlot manager, David Trowbridge. Our meeting was focused around the possibility of having the Maine-Anjou cattle fed at one location and very accessible for travel. After our meeting and tour of the feedlot, we decided that
Commercial Connection Gregory’s Feedlot will be the site for the 2012 AMAA National Feed Trial. Gregory’s is a 7,000 head feedlot located in southwest Iowa about 40 miles southeast of Omaha, Neb. Keep in mind that the TCSCF works with producers of all sizes and the producers of Maine-Anjou influenced cattle are welcome to feed from one head to hundreds. There are no limits. Drive east on Highway 184/ County Road J18 for three and a half miles to 305th Ave. Go north one quarter mile to top of a hill and look for a sign on the east side of the road. Cattle may be delivered on more than one date. Due to drought conditions throughout the country and possible early weaning, please call Dave at (515) 2013281 for other delivery options. We would appreciate having your cattle and will work to accommodate you any way that we can. Please keep in mind that the calves need to be weaned for at least 30-45 days with vaccinations completed. It will be a benefit to the health of your cattle and the entire pen of cattle. Computerized records keep the data moving through the system. Information will be collected on each animal throughout its time in the feedlot, prior to going on feed, re-implant and harvest. The TCSCF evaluation team will use the records and visual appraisal to sort the cattle into different harvest
groups to ensure calves are sold at an optimum endpoint. The TCSCF team has been collecting performance and carcass data for nearly 25 years. The time-tested system helps identify when the cattle are ready to be shipped and follows them through harvest. The financing options can allow producers, who consign a minimum of 10 head, the opportunity to receive $300 per head payment upon delivery to the feedlot if that is desired. Please contact the TCSCF office at (712) 769-2600 before delivery to receive your payment. No one will be billed for feed, it will be deducted from the proceeds of the cattle!
Health Requirements:
Health requirements are strictly enforced. Health of the cattle is very important and has a major effect on gain, feed conversions, stress on the cattle and the overall level of performance. Entries shall meet the following standards at least four weeks prior to delivery: ● Bulls castrated. ● Treated for internal and external parasites. ● All horns removed. ● Immunized for Modified Live Virus: IBR, BVD, PI3 and BRSV ● Pasteurella multocida bacterin toxoid. ● Mannheimia hemolytica bacterin toxoid ● Clostridium Chauvoei, Septicum (Backleg and malignant edema) ● Clostridium Perfringes (Type C & D) ● Steers and heifers must be weaned and started on a light ration 28 days prior to delivery. ● Steers and heifers must be free of warts, ringworm and mange. A veterinary statement on vaccinations must accompany cattle. Health rules will be strictly enforced. Analysis of TCSCF data indicates calves vaccinated with modified live vaccines result in significantly reduced respiratory pulls in the feedlot as compared to calves vaccinated with killed vaccines. We suggest testing replacement heifers for BVD.

Commercial Connection TCSCF Rules and Regulations
● Open to all producers and feedlot operators that have Maine-Anjou influenced cattle. ● Sire or sire breed groups will be identified. ● Individual steer/heifer entries will be accepted which may be either home-raised or purchased. A farm may make as many entries as they would like. ● A pen reservation fee of $20 per steer must accompany entry. This entry fee will be credited back to each producer’s account. ● A $300 per head advance is available for a 10 head minimum. Interest incurred will be the responsibility of the consignor. ● TCSCF administrative office will need to be notified if an advance is requested by a consignor. ● Entries are due three weeks prior to beginning of test for cattle. ● At delivery, all steers and heifers will be double tagged. The original owner’s eartag will be removed. ● No bulls or stags allowed. ● No horns allowed. ● Ownership will be transferred to TCSCF for $5 per steer or heifer. All ownership rights are thus conveyed to and steers and heifers become the property of TCSCF. This eliminates the need for a feed deposit. ● Death will be a loss to TCSCF and the former owner. ● Steers and heifers will be fed a warm-up ration for 28 days. They will be weighed on test at the end of warm-up. Steers and heifers will be placed on approximately 80 percent concentrate ration as soon as possible. ● Steers and heifers will be weighed individually at least four times: upon delivery, start of test period, time of re-implant and prior to harvest. ● Steers and heifers will be harvested on at least two different dates five weeks apart, determined by the TCSCF board. An annual meeting will be held in July. The TCSCF board reserves the right to disqualify any animal at any time if a problem arises with a steer or heifer entered in the program. Animals may be sold or returned to original owner upon reimbursement for expenses.

Report #1 - On-Test Report
This report will give the weight upon delivery to Iowa and home weight and shrink if the home weights are provided. It will also give the on-test weight which is the weight taken after the cattle have been in Iowa for 28 to 35 days. A disposition score will be taken when the cattle are weighed on-test and that will also be included with the report. If the producer has reported the birthdates, a weight per day of age and a weight per day of age ratio will be included. The warm-up average daily gain is also reported. Report #2 - Re-Implant Report This report will include weights taken when the cattle are re-implanted 70 days before the first harvest date or approximately 60 days after the on-test weights are taken. It will also include the average disposition score, overall average daily gain, on-test average daily gain, average daily gain ratio, weight per day of age and weight per day of age ratio (if birthdates are reported to the Tri-County office). Report #3 - Final Report The financial report is confidential to the individual consignor. There will also be a check included in the packet. This feed trial will allow all cattle producers with Maine-Anjou influenced calves the unique opportunity to feed and showcase their genetics. Trials of this magnitude and depth will provide producers with the results to assist them in selecting for the genetic traits that need improved upon. The Maine-Anjou breed is such a unique breed that presents cattlemen with the genetic reach to compete in all phases of beef production and does it well. We have proven this! Let’s make the rest of the beef industry aware of our attributes. Please consider joining us this fall by consigning some of your cattle to this TCSCF. American Maine-Anjou Association 50K Research Project
The AMAA is desperately in need of hundreds of samples of Maine-Anjou bull semen to complete this very important research project! My travels have found that very few cattlemen are aware that this research project is ongoing and do not understand the future value that will be created for our breed. Numerous articles have been printed with additional information placed on the Maine-Anjou Web site. Please take time to read the information pertaining to this DNA research project. When the 50K research is in place we will have the needed foundation to build upon and make further molecular advancement as those tools are validated and become available to the industry. Without this base the AMAA stands to lose substantial time and needed market share relative to other breeds that have moved to adopt molecular breeding value technologies. To make it simple, the primary benefit will be the improved EPD accuracies for calving ease, weaning and yearling weight, carcass merit, maternal performance and assist producers in selections of future sires. Please send your thawed semen samples, labeled and in a crush-proof package to the AMAA office as soon as possible. Check the inventory in your semen tank against an updated list of sires already tested which can be found at www.maine-anjou.org. WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Calving Ease (CE) and Maternal Calving Ease (MCE)
of the Voice, please make it number one on your to do list. These two traits will be added to our EPD profiles as a new addition in the 2012 fall run. This is truly exciting as these CE and MCE EPDs will be a welcomed addition to our existing EPD profiles. Our thanks to Bob Weaber, PhD, Wade Shafer, PhD, and geneticist Lauren Hyde, PhD, for all of their extensive work in helping to complete this project. Quoting from the August/September article of the Voice, “the new CE EPD describes the relative differences in additional percentage of a sire’s calves born unassisted. The MCE EPD describes the additional percentage of a sire’s daughter’s calves that are born unassisted. The EPD values that are more positive are viewed as more favorable than negative values. The CE EPD should be used instead of the BW EPD to manage dystocia in first calf heifers. Breeders should exclusively use CE EPD for the selection of service sires to minimize dystocia in first calf heifers.” Please take the time to read this article. These CE and MCE EPDs will play a major role in assisting our seedstock breeders in their selection process to improve our calving ease traits and it will provide both seedstock and commercial producers with a high genetic correlation of .93 between birth weight and calving ease. This indicates that many of the same genes that affect one trait also affect the other. Our thanks to the American Simmental Association for the enhancements made to the multi-breed genetic evaluation system that has enabled the AMAA to develop our CE and MCE EPDs. Gearing Up!

I love this time of year, November and December mean hoodie weather, football games, family holidays and major stock show time! The new show season gives you the opportunity to exhibit your best cattle, check out other breeders' programs and meet other exhibitors and breeders from across the country. This year I’m even more excited about stock show season because I will have the privilege of wearing my maroon jacket for the first time in the showring as an American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) board member. It’s an honor to wear that jacket and I’m looking forward to working with the junior board, breeders and other junior Maine-Anjou members. Currently, the junior board is working on several fundraisers. We just wrapped up our 2013 calendar and I would like to thank everyone who supported it. Another major fundraiser for the junior association happens each year at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS), Denver, Colo. This year we will be selling tickets on a lot donated by Dennis Garwood, Green Valley Cattle, Nebraska. We appreciate their generous contribution and I know you won’t want to miss out on a chance to win the lot from their program. Money raised from this lot goes directly to our National Junior Show, which is the highlight of the year for all junior Maine-Anjou members. I hope you will take advantage of this great opportunity to support the juniors.
If you are interested in purchasing a ticket for the drawing to be held in Denver, please contact a junior board member or look for us at the NWSS. Stock show season and holiday season are always a busy time around my house, but I love it because my whole family is together. I’m the youngest of six children and the only girl in my family and I sure do miss my brothers who are away at college. We have grown up working together in the barn and it’s just not the same without all of them here. Yes, we did have our fair share of arguments, but all the fun times outweigh any arguments we ever had. During this busy season, I hope you will all take time to enjoy being with your family and friends, no matter if it’s in the barn blowing on your cattle or sitting around the table with them on Thanksgiving day. Making memories is what it’s all about! I have already made some great memories with the new junior board and I’m ready to make some more! Good luck at the upcoming shows and I hope to see all of you!

MAPP inventory listings, MAPP agreement forms and registration applications with your active dam registration numbers provided were mailed from our office in early September 2012. We are requesting that all inventories and agreement forms be returned back to our office no later than Nov. 15, 2012. PLEASE be prompt in returning your inventories and agreement forms by the deadline as this slows the registration process here when inventories are tardy. The calf registration (applications) are not part of the deadline as they are meant as a convenience for you in submitting the registrations on your calves. We will invoice $5 per head of 2013 enrolled (breeding-age) females beginning in January 2013 (along with billing 2013 dues if not already submitted). If you are currently enrolled in MAPP and have decided this program is not the best-suited program for your herd, please let us know ASAP. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. If ET, make sure the donor dam has been DNA, PHA & TH typed and that we have the results on file. If you are checking on work please e-mail us at maine@kc.rr.com. When registering annual active dams for “performance only” animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities as this will help the registrar processing tremendously. Rush work is processed ahead of regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail so please do not procrastinate to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers that they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Announcements to three weeks for turn-around on registrations and transfers sent in to our office. If a paper is needed within that time, a rush fee ($25 per eight head) will be required before the work will be completed.
RUSH ORDERS
If you are selling an animal we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $25 (covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow-up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. It is not our office staff ’s responsibility to call breeders that fax in registration work. No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail the next business day. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If you need to have registrations sent out by overnight delivery, there is an additional fee (in addition to the rush fee) for sending overnight. We normally use Federal Express (Fed Ex) and the charges are based on Fed Ex fees at that given time. Again, let us emphasize, it is your responsibility to contact our office to make arrangements for overnight delivery so that we have the correct shipping address and payment before sending. Fed Ex WILL NOT deliver to a post office box. A rush will be picked up by Fed Ex the next business day for delivery the following day. For big weekend events, such as state expos, we reserve the right to require work to be in our office no later than 2 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to that weekend’s show. Please plan ahead. If a paper is needed within two weeks, a rush will be required at this time of year. Thank you.

DUES REQUIREMEnT
Please note if a buyer submits a registration and/ or transfer from an owner that is not currently a dues-paid member, that buyer will be charged for the seller’s membership fee or annual dues (adult dues are $100). The exception to this rule is if all animals owned by that individual (non - or inactive member) are being transferred or cancelled at the same time as what the buyer has submitted, the membership fee would be waived. In that regard, work is held until complete payment is received.

Announcements dna, tha and pha requirementS
Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site www.maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays so please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late in the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, so please make sure we have an up-todate e-mail address for you, if applicable.

It’s hard for me to believe that I am writing my 20th Extra Voice. It has been a whirlwind, it feels like just yesterday I sat down at this desk trying to fill those very big shoes in front of me. Well, here we are knocking at the door of yet another new year and another six issues of the Voice magazine. If you have been keeping up with the editorial in the last couple of issues, you are aware that we have been updating the membership on the results of the 2012 membership survey the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) sent out. It is my strong belief that if you are going to work in a customer service position one of your main objectives should, in fact, be to “listen” to your customers, both their compliments and concerns. So, after reflecting on the results of the survey as well as asking questions in person, we here at the Voice will be working on a variety of different advertising options in this upcoming year. We will
have options for everyone and every budget. After all, it is our objective to serve you. Be watching for these great deals in the upcoming January/February issue of the Voice! Some other things on the horizon are the 2013 National Western Stock Show held January 16-20, 2013. Be sure to book those tickets, reserve those rooms and plan to attend this great event! As always, the pen show, Bright Lights sale and the hill show are can’t miss events that are sure to be stacked with quality Maine-Anjou genetics. Please remember ALL Donor Dams and AI Sires MUST be DNA/TH/PHA tested to register offspring. All work will be held if donors are not tested prior to registering. If you are unsure if your animal has been tested please e-mail or call our office or see testing status on our Web site under “Search MA Breed”. The American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) has been mailing way too many reminders to breeders that have not followed through with testing. If you are a breeder that has received a letter please comply with AMAA rules and submit a sample to GeneSeek ASAP as all work will be held until required testing is complete. GeneSeek submission forms may be obtained by calling, e-mailing or printing them from the AMAA Web site. Hair or semen needs to be directly mailed to GeneSeek. Testing may take up to three weeks depending on the testing. If your animal is deceased and you do not have hair or semen to test, all offspring will need to be tested. If your animal was DNA typed using UC Davis, we may be able to transfer that sample to GeneSeek to obtain TH/PHA testing. AMAA Survey - Part 3

Being the final section to be reported on regarding the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) membership survey we will touch on the junior organization as well as the final questions dealing with thoughts on the future direction of your breed organization. Two questions that are ongoing deal with junior regional shows and/or the promotion of future open regional shows, both indicated a high interest along with support of those shows. Those were very interesting responses considering our current efforts to hold junior regional shows, much less add open regional shows to the mix, have not been supported like we had envisioned. From a junior membership point of view we had hoped to give the youth of a particular region a taste of a junior national atmosphere along with giving the breeders in that region a chance to promote and market their breeding programs. Like I mentioned those junior regional shows have not materialized as we had hoped and a need to go back to the drawing board is warranted. Along those same lines, just a little over 70 percent of the respondents would like to see more AMAA sponsored sales. Anything we can do to get reputable Maine-Anjou genetics out in front of the public is a good thing. The key to not only starting a new sale venue but more importantly establishing a solid tradition is quality, backed by pedigree, data and breeder integrity. Question 29 dealt with various issues with regard to the AJMAA. In step with what the AMAA’s Long Range committee has put together for its new five year plan, survey respondents overwhelmingly see the educational value and need for a strong junior organization. The AMAA will continue its commitment to the overall well being and growth of the AJMAA! Question 30 centered on the Commercial Development program. You will notice that a large percentage of respondents are very aware of the program, believe in its application and see the need for expansion of the AMAA’s research capabilities. While many of our breeding operations concentrate on the very vibrant show industry, the AMAA fully realizes that “real world” Maine-Anjou genetics that have data to back

up the pedigree along with design and structure to meet various marketing opportunities have the greatest advantage to meet the test of time. Question 33 lends a lot to the future growth of the breed and what some of those limitations may be. The cost of feed becomes a major issue to expansion as a large portion of the country is enduring one year, if not more, of drought. Marketability of Maine-Anjou genetics carries a heavy load as it does with any other registered breed of cattle. I think we all need to realize this issue needs to be addressed by the national, state and regional organizations and whether you as a breeder want to commit to it or not, you must create your own following and interest in your program. In the Voice publication we have stated many times that if people don’t know about your program how can you expect them to show an interest? Lack of investment in a solid marketing program can prove to be very expensive to one’s breeding program.
