Mares With More Osage Star Lady

By Larry Thornton

A

nick is defined in horse breeding as the mating of a given stallion from one bloodline, with a mare or group of mares from another bloodline, that produces outstanding foals. One of the great nicks of the American quarter horse is the mating of Leo with Oklahoma Star bred mares. One of the greatest examples of this mating came when Leo was bred to Osage Star Lady, a granddaughter of Oklahoma Star P-6. When you examine this cross you see that this was truly a nick between a stallion and mare that made the mare one of our Mares With More.

Osage Star Lady was foaled in 1943 and her breeder was Earl H. Jackson of Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Fred W. Swalley of Ponca City, Oklahoma purchased her as a yearling. Swalley submitted her registration application in 1945 getting her number in 1946. This is Osage Star Lady as an aged mare. This photo was taken and sent to the AQHA so that Ralph Shebester could get a duplicate set of papers as he had lost her original papers. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum

A recent interview with Clinton Swalley, son of Fred Swalley, will give us some insight into the man that owned Osage Star Lady. Clinton related it this way, “Dad worked at Conoco Oil Company for a living. He started out walking pipelines and ended up working as a chemist in the motor test division. He was there 42 years. That is what he did for a living. His love was horses. As a kid he would walk a mile to catch a horse to ride 100 yards to the mailbox.” Clinton told about the senior Swalley’s involvement in rodeo, “Dad roped and one time set an arena record. He also bulldogged. Sonny Schultz, a rodeo clown was his bulldogging partner. Sonny had a cowboy supply store there in Ponca. Sonny’s dad was one of the originals on the 101 Ranch. Sonny did the bulldogging and my dad did the hazing. They did the wild cow milking too.”

Registration photo of Osage Star Lady. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum

Page 16

He continued about his Dad’s nature to be perfect and how that translated down to his children and his horses. He stated it this way, “My Dad was the most competitive person I have ever known. He was a perfectionist. If he was going to do something, he wanted it absolutely perfect. Even in school we had to work hard. I graduated with a 3.9 grade point and my sister with a 4.0. He trained my sister as a swimmer. She set an Olympic record in the Junior Olympics in the woman’s breaststroke at 15 years of age. At the time she had been riding a horse and the horse went over a little ledge and she broke her ankle and she had to use crutches to get to the starting block, but she still set a THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012

new record. That is the way he did everything.” Clinton explained how they came to own Osage Star Lady, “We always had a few horses around when I was growing up, but he finally ran across this little ole palomino mare on a ranch near Pawhuska, Oklahoma. He picked her out of the herd and brought her home and that was Osage Star Lady. He roped on her for a couple of years and he won a few match races with her.”

Joe Blair (TB) Joe Reed P-3 Della Moore

It appears that Osage Star Lady was somewhat like her owner. Clinton explained, “Dad built a little arena in our pasture and he would go practice over and over. You would have to hold her back or she would break the barrier because she would be right on the calf’s tail.” Osage Star Lady may have been intense as a roping horse but she had a quiet sensible side. Clinton related the following, “One time we were hauling her through town and took a corner to fast and turned the trailer over. She never moved. We got her out of the trailer, got it upright put her back and she never missed a beat.” He added this about what she liked, “She loved to take a bath. She loved the water. She would love to play in it. Dad would saddle her up and take her to a parade and she would just prance and dance around and show off.” Let’s look at her pedigree. She was out of Sodey May a mare used by Earl H. Jackson. Sodey May was bred by Luther Alred also of Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The sire of Sodey May was a horse known as the Alred Dun. The Alred Dun was sired by Yellow Wolf the famous Waggoner stallion. Yellow Wolf was sired by Old Joe Bailey. The dam of the Alred Dun is a mare listed as a Burnett Bay Mare. Her sire and dam are listed in some places as a Triangle Quarter Horse and a Triangle Mare. The mares we generally see bred to the Alred Dun are listed simply as a Palmer Mare or a Palmer thoroughbred mare and that is about all we know about them. The registration application for Osage Star Lady lists the Palmer mare in her pedigree as sired by Jessie James, a thoroughbred. This Jessie James is not listed in the Equineline.com pedigrees or the Thoroughbred Horse Pedigree Query as well. Osage Star was the sire of Osage Star Lady. He was a son of Oklahoma Star P-6 who was sired by a thoroughbred named Dennis Reed. The dam of Oklahoma Star P-6 was Cutthroat. The official pedigree for Cutthroat shows that she was sired by a quarter horse named Guliver. Oklahoma Star’s last owner Ronald Mason believed that Cutthroat was sired by Bonnie Joe. Bonnie Joe was the sire of Joe THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012

Blair, the sire of Joe Reed P-3 the double grandsire of Leo. This version of Osage Star Lady’s pedigree gives her and Leo an interesting genetic tie through Bonnie Joe. The dam of Osage Star was Quarter Lady. She was sired by Quarter Deck a thoroughbred sired by the legendary Man O’War. The dam of Quarter Lady was Pretty Lady by Old Red Buck P-9. The sire of Old Red Buck was Red Man by Idle Jack by Tubal Cain by Berry’s Cold Deck by Old Cold Deck. The dam of Old Red Buck was Pet Dawson by Jeff. Jeff was sired by Printer II by Old Cold Deck. Pet Dawson was out of Old Babe by Little Earl. Little Earl was sired by Missouri Mike by Printer II by Old Cold Deck. Pretty Lady was out of Babe Dawson. She was sired by Little Earl Jr by Little Earl. The dam of Babe Dawson was Queen by Little Earl. Thus taking us back to Old Cold Deck again. The broodmare career of Osage Star Lady began with her mating to Bear Cat which produced three foals. The first foal born from this mating was Tadpole. This 1948 stallion has no AQHA show or race record. The next foal from this cross was The Yellow Kitten. She was the dam of several performers including Mr Roper Bars that earned 16 PHBA halter and performance points and Star Lady Bruce an AAA ROM rated runner. The Yellow Kitten is the dam of Ponca City Rose the dam of the Youth AQHA Champion Seeker’s Sidekick. The last foal from the mating with Bear Cat was Captain Diamond a stallion with no AQHA show or race record. Clinton tells us about how his Dad’s friendship with Bud Warren, Leo’s owner, lead to the great Leo/Osage Star Lady cross. He stated it this way, “After he had won a few match races he started breeding her. When he started to

breed her he started with a local horse (Bear Cat) and had some good offspring, but then we bred to Leo. Dad was a good friend of Bud Warren, and at that time Leo’s stud fee was $1,000, but ours was free. I think it was because of the mare’s reputation as a match race horse. The first foal was a filly named Leo Star Lady.” The entry of Leo Star Lady brings out some information about Fred Swalley and racing. His son recalled his father as a racehorse trainer, “He did all of his own training. He rode with a stock saddle. We had a local jockey, but when he went to places like Centennial he would use the track jockeys. For the most part he would tell the jockey to sit there, hold the reins and let them have their head and don’t’ use the bat. His Leo just in his paddock Warren towards the go endand of horses loved to runatand they Ranch would just go and the breeding career. This picture shows the deformed front go. leg of this great broodmare sire and legend in the quarter horse industry.

The perfectionist side Fred Swalley followed him to the Photoofcourtesy Jim Walker racetrack. Clinton explained, “One of the things my Dad was particular about was with their stride. years of this futurity Leo sired the winners of eight of them. Leo Star Lady won the 1953 Oklahoma Futurity. The other seven to win this futurity for Leo during this time were Leota W, Garrett’s Miss Pawhuska, Leola, Mona Leta, Fanny Leo, Miss Adelita and Rosa Leo—all daughters of Leo. Leo Star Lady was an AA rated ROM runner that won three races. She was the dam of eleven foals with three ROM runners. The ROM runners include Pachuca, a daughter of Joe Reed II. This mare was also the dam of four ROM runners including Storm’s Son and Jet Pet. The sire of Pachuca being Joe Reed II is interesting because Joe Reed II is the sire of Leo, the sire of Leo Star Lady. Joe Reed II was the sire of Whiskey Bert. Whiskey Bert was an A rated runner that was a race winner. He was the foundation sire for the Bill Fletcher Farms in Lonoke, Arkansas. He supplied Fletcher with a group of mares we refer to today as the Whiskey Bert mares. These mares were the foundation of Bill’s program to breed a Joe Reed/King/Joe Hancock bred horse. The next foal out of Osage Star Lady and sired by Leo was Palleo Pete. A palomino stallion that set the American quarter racing industry on its ear in 1954 when he became the first Page 22

palomino champion racing American quarter horse. His titles were the 1954 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and the 1954 AQHA Racing Champion Stallion. His official stakes record shows that he won Kansas QHA Futurity at Centennial Race Course and the Winner-Take-All at Albuquerque. He was third in the 1954 Oklahoma QHA Exhibitors Futurity (the original name for the Oklahoma Futurity). He was third in this futurity to Miss Adelita and Bobbie Leo. Both daughters of Leo. He was second in the 1955 Kansas QHA Derby. He officially equaled two track records in 1954 one at Centennial going 350 yards in 17.9 seconds and one at Albuquerque going 440 yards in 22.1 seconds. But lets take a closer look at this race record. Nelson Nye in his “Under The Wire” column in the January 1968 HORSEMAN magazine tells the rest of the story. He reports that Palleo Pete ran 16 races in 1954 with the AQHA reporting only six official starts. He ran six races at Newkirk, Oklahoma and four races at Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The highlight race at Newkirk was a 250-yard race with an 8-horse field. He day lighted the field. The highlight at Pawhuska was the Pawhuska Futurity at 330 yards over Miss Adelita (the Oklahoma Futurity winner) by two lengths. The Oklahoma Futurity was his only “official” defeat in 1954. Nye tells us that Palleo Pete was running with a bad knee that came during a race at Pawhuska going 220 yards on what was termed an “awfully hard track.” They had doctored the knee and continued to race. In the trials of the Oklahoma Futurity Palleo Pete won over Miss Adelita and Bucket Baby—both daughters of Leo. The finals of the Oklahoma Futurity were complicated by rain and the finals were ran on a muddy track with Palleo Pete finishing third. When Nye asked Swalley about the race his answer was simply “good mudders.” It is hard to really report all of Palleo Pete’s races, as they don’t all come with his official AQHA record. Nye’s story on the horse has a picture of him winning the Imperial Hotel Purse setting a record for a two-year-old colt going the 350 yards in 18.1 seconds. Palleo Pete was important to the Swalley family. Here is how Clinton remembers this stallion’s role in the family, “All of Dad’s racing money was extra. Palleo Pete won races like the Winner-Take-All and that money bought us our home place and the house we lived in.” Palleo Pete’s entry into the breeding pen was short lived as he died at the age of 12, after siring only 170 foals. But he has left his mark in the industry. He is the sire of 88 race starters that won 1301 races. He sired 45 racing ROM and Continued on page 24...

two stakes winners and one World Champion racing American quarter horse. The leading money winner and the champion sired by Palleo Pete was the noted mare Golden Note, who was out of Gold Note by Custus Rastus (TB). This mare won the PCQHA Futurity and was a third place finisher in the 1961 All American Futurity. The winner of this race was the great Pokey Bar. Her race efforts in 1961 made her the AQHA Racing Co-Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. Golden Note was a full sister to Palleo’s Note; an AAA rated AQHA Champion with 24 halter points. Palleo’s Note was also trained as a stock horse. Palleo’s Note and Golden Note were bred by Vance Longden, the brother to the legendary jockey Johnny Longden. Johnny Longden owned and raced Palleo’s Note for a time. The short life of Palleo Pete has a legacy that is still prominent in our modern racing American Quarter Horse. He is the sire of the mare Miss Ginger Gay a daughter of Ginger Gay by Bob E a son of Flying Bob. Ginger Gay ran AAA time winning 8 of 45 starts. She became the dam of Gay’s Delight by Rocket Bar (TB). Gay’s Delight was ROM on the track with a 95-speed index. She in turn is the dam of Tiny’s Gay. Tiny’s Gay sired by Tiny Watch was the 1974 AQHA Racing World Champion; 1974 AQHA Racing World Champion Two-Year-Old and the 1974 AQHA Racing World Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. He won his titles based on 12 wins in 13 starts at two. He won the Kansas Futurity, Rainbow Futurity, the Tumbleweed Futurity and the Bay Meadows Futurity. The only defeat in 1974 came in the All American Futurity when he finished second by a head to Easy Date. Tiny’s Gay ended 1974 with surgery that ended his racing career. Tiny’s Gay has gone on to be a very influential sire of running horses, whose legacy today seems to follow the family tradition of influencing through broodmares. When it comes to the performance world, Tiny’s Gay has a unique place as the broodmare sire of Dash Ta Fame. He is the all time leading sire of barrel racing money winners that have won over $6,000,000. Gay’s Delight didn’t stop with Tiny’s Gay. She was the dam of the stakes winners Top Moons Gay, Go Go Gay, Chick’s Gay and Chick’s Delight. Chick’s Gay is the dam of Lucks Gay Chic, an AQHA Racing Champion Aged Stallion. Gay’s Delight also produced the mare Tiny’s Delight a full sister to Tiny’s Gay. This mare was AAA rated. She became the dam of Our Third Delight. Our Third Delight has become an AQHA Mare of Distinction through her foals the ChampiPage 24

ons stallions Tres Seis and Dean Miracle. Fortune Of Delight is a stakes winning daughter of Our Third Delight. Fortune Of Delight is another AQHA Dam of Distinction as the mother of A Delightful Dasher and Hes My Dasher both AQHA Racing Champions. A Delightful Legacy is another daughter of Our Third Delight. A Delightful Legacy is the dam of the AQHA Racing Champion Three-Year-Old Colt Inseparable. Tres Seis is the sire of the 2011 AQHA Champion Two-YearOld Gelding and All American Futurity winner Ochoa. Flutter Lady by Chief Gunter was the next foal out of Osage Star Lady. This mare has no AQHA show or race record. She is the granddam of one AQHA ROM performer in White Sox Nix who earned 10 performance points. Osage Star Lady’s 1955 foal was Holey Sox. This Leo stallion was sold as a colt at the Denver Sale. He was sold to Woodey Searle of Vernal, Utah. The under bidder was the legendary cutting horse rider and rancher B. A. “Barney” Skipper of Longview, Texas. Searle told Duane Valentry in the story “Holey Sox” that appeared in THE WESTERN HORSEMAN September 1963 that he intended to use Holey Sox on his mares and use him as a rope horse. Holey Sox ended up going to the track to run AA time with a case of pneumonia bringing him home ending his race career. From there Holy Sox started on a show career that netted him 150.5 AQHA performance points. He earned points in barrel racing (21); pole bending (.5); Reining (16); Trail (1); Tie-Down Roping (3); cow horse (5); western pleasure (6) and the remaining 97 points came in cutting. The Valentry story tells us that Austin Beebe started Holey Sox on his cutting training and Jim Lee took over after not being able to buy him. Lee would take Holey Sox to places like the 1963 Denver National Western cutting horse contest where they scored a 150 and beat out the 1962 NCHA World Champion Cutter Bill who scored a 149. Holey Sox was leading the NCHA world standing in 1964 when an eye trouble forced him off the road. When you read the Valentry story on Holey Sox you learn about a couple of incidents that had an effect on Holey Sox’s life. The first was the pneumonia that took him off the track and then a hip injury. But an incident that took place with the famed Poco Lena is a different kind of story. Poco Lena was owned by Barney Skipper, the man that was the under bidder for Holey Sox at the Denver Sale. Skipper’s Poco Lena and Holey Sox were traveling back to Texas in a trailer when Skipper, who was traveling by plane, was killed in an accident. Sadly Poco Lena and Holey Sox were abandoned by the driver who was taking them to Texas, and left for five Continued on page 26... THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012

days. Both horses suffered from the abandonment with no food or water. Poco Lena suffered career ending founder and Holey Sox recovered to return to the cutting pen. Holey Sox was like his full brother in that he didn’t sire a large number of foals. He died at the age of 16. He sired 203 AQHA registered foals with only 27-point earners. His leading performer was Mr Holey Sox who was out of Harmon’s Girl. This great stallion was a six-time NCHA Top Ten finalist earning two NCHA Open Reserve World Championships and three NCHA World Champion Stallion titles. He was an NCHA Open Finals winner as well earning over $103,477.17. His AQHA show record shows that he was a Superior cutting horse that earned 55 cutting points. Holey Sox had only 96 daughters that produced foals. The leading performer from this group is Dox Brendie. She earned 901.5 AQHA performance points in open, amateur and youth divisions. She was a two time AQHA Youth World Champion Trail Horse and is Superior in trail in the open, youth and amateur divisions. A good producing daughter of Holey Sox was Holey Queen the dam of five ROM runners. Her daughter Queens Peppy Bar (ROM) is the dam of Rose Patch, one of Mel Potter’s great broodmares. Rose Patch is the dam of MP A Man With Roses, (George) who set an arena record at the PacWest Barrel Race in 2011 in 16.646 just .003 seconds off the world record. George is a full brother to the team-

roping mare MP Patches of Hay (Lori). This mare is an NFR qualifier that has earned over $125,000. Holey Queen is a full sister to Holey Dunn the dam of Hi Bunny Bars who is the dam of Winken Back Atya. This Mel Potter bred gelding nicknamed Max or Maximus was the 2011 AQHA/PRCA runner-up for the bulldogging horse of the year. Holey Girl is another full sister to the mares listed above. She is the dam of Miss Great Depth, who is the dam of Miss Trouble Bars. Miss Trouble Bars is the dam of Sir Double Delight or Troubles as his owner and rider Sherry Cervi called him. It was Troubles that started Sherry on the road to being a multiple WPRCA World Champion Barrel Racer. The next foal by Leo and out of Osage Star Lady was Palleo Peaches. This mare didn’t earn a ROM on the track but she was stakes placed with the third in LaMesa Park’s Kansas Futurity. Her leading performer would have to be the ROM runner Barleo Star by The Ole Man. Palleo Patty was the next daughter from the Leo/Osage Star Lady cross. She was unshown and unraced. Her leading performer was Palleo Rillito by Rillito Deck an ROM runner and he was stakes placed with a third in the Colorado Bred Futurity. The next full sister in this set of foals was Palleo Pam. Her leading performer was Palleo Blair an ROM runner. Kay Cindy Leo was the 1959 foal out of the Leo/Osage Star Lady cross. This mare earned an ROM with an AA ratContinued on page 28...

ing. She was the dam of Leo Feast by Feast (TB). Leo Feast was a prominent runner in the 1969 and 1970 LaMesa Park’s All Distance Championship Series. He won the 1970 La Mesa Park All Distance Championship Series #3 at 350 yards. He was second or third in six more of these races running from 330 to 440 yards during the 1969 and 1970 racing seasons. His other stakes win came in the Thanksgiving Allowance in 1968 at Blue Ribbon Downs. Leo Feast is the sire of Sweet Feast who in turn is the dam of Sweet Game who is the dam of Sweet Beduino. Sweet Beduino is the dam of One Sweet Dash. One Sweet Dash is the dam of the 2012 winner of the Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1) in a colt named One Dashing Eagle. One Sweet Dash is the dam of the One Sweet Jess the 2011 Golden State Million Futurity (G1) winner giving Osage Star Lady another link to modern quarter horse racing. The last foal from the Leo/Osage Star Lady cross was Poncan, who was born in 1960. He went on to be an AAA rated runner. Poncan was like his brothers in that he sired only 43 foals and was the sire of one ROM runner in the AA Mr. Poncan. The next stallion Swalley used was Leo’s great son Croton Oil. Croton Oil was the sire of Dolly Croton and Classy Croton. Dolly Croton is the dam of Osage Bar Lady stakes winner in the Western Slope Derby. Dolly Croton is the granddam of Skipacheck Junior, the 1996 AQHA Amateur High Point International Halter Gelding and Smart Croton Oil, AQHA Superior heading and heeling horse with 336 AQHA open and youth points. Classy Croton is the dam of the ROM performance horse Anchor Croton, who is the dam of Spit And Polish, the 1989 AQHA High Point Barrel Racing Horse who has superiors in open and amateur barrel racing. Classy Croton is the dam Moon Star Lady who it the dam of six AQHA ROM racehorses with three of them being stakes placed including the leading money winner The Master Lady.

The foal produced from the Bar Raider mating was Sheila Go. This mare is the dam of Shiela Bee Play who earned 497 PHBA halter and performance points. She also earned 16.5 open, amateur and novice AQHA points. The next three foals out of Osage Star Lady were sired by Diamond Charge the Red Bee Ranch senior sire. They were Petitie Diamond, Osage Star Baby and Hy Velvet. The most successful of these mares was Petite Diamond. She was the dam of Go Diamond Girl, an AQHA Superior western pleasure horse. Go Diamond Girl was the dam of the AQHA Superior Western Pleasure stallion Docs Go Diamond. He was also the Reserve AQHA High Point Western Pleasure Horse in 1979. The next owners for Osage Star Lady were Ralph Shebester then Marvin Barnes and then Betty Lou Shebester is listed as the last owner of Osage Star Lady. The only foal produced at this point was Fast Leo by Fast Time Leo and bred by Ralph Shebester. He was rated with a 75-speed index but had no AQHA show record or sire record. There have been many great nicks over the years. And the mating of Leo and Osage Star Lady is one of the most interesting. After learning the story about this great mare and how her sons were limited as sires, it has to make us think “oh what might have been” if those sons had produced more foals. But as it is, this little ole palomino-roping mare made her mark as one of our mares with more and as a contributor to the legend of Leo.

Osage Star by Oklahome Star Photo courtesy of Phil Livingston

In October 1962 Fred Swalley held a dispersal sale with fellow horseman Zeke Walker and Charles Peppers Jr. When I asked Clinton why his father opted to sell at that point , his answer was simple, “It was the right time to sell and Osage Star Lady was getting some age.” So Osage Star Lady, Poncan, Dolly Croton and Kay Cindy Leo were sold. Poncan went to Loyd Jones for $8,000; Dolly Croton went to J. C. Means for $3,700 and Kay Cindy Leo went to Loyd Jones for $22,500. The three-in-one package of Osage Star Lady, Classy Croton (at her side) and bred to Bar Raider sold for a modest $10,000 to the Red Bee Ranch in Wichita, Kansas. Page 28

The Cowan Brothers and the Pat Cowan Legacy Part II

Cowan Brothers, Tregg, Tork & Tigh with Legendary Stallion Sunfrost Pat Cowan aboard Sunfrost When Pat Cowan died in 1985 he left his family a ranching legacy. This legacy has become famous through horses like the late foundation sire, Sun Frost and his offspring. Last month we saw how Pat Cowan, with the aid of his friend and confidant Stanley Johnston, built his own breeding program. We saw that Stanley’s breeding program specialized in the blood of Driftwood and how Pat Cowan brought that breeding into his own program. Then we saw how Pat added some great mares through the South Dakota rancher and racehorse enthusiast Clarence Bearry. It was through the Johnston and Bearry mares that Pat built the foundation for Sun Frost to form his great reputation as a sire. The next question we ask, is how his sons have done in continuing the Cowan legacy as quarter horse breeders? Well the answer is obvious; the Cowan Brothers have continued building their father’s legacy. But before we look at how the Cowan Brothers have carried on with the program, lets look at a move Pat Cowan made, before he died, that ties things together. Pat Cowan was not one to rest on what he had developed and like any successful breeder he carried on trying to improve his horses, through the addition of other stallions. The first of these stallions was Tuff Time Peppy, a son of Peppy San Badger. Peppy San Badger was the 1977 NCHA Futurity Champion. He was sired by Mr San Peppy and out of Sugar Badger a daughter of the great Grey Badger III. Mr San Peppy was sired by Leo San by Leo. Sissy Freckles by Jewel’s Leo Bar (Freckles) was the dam of Tuff Time Peppy. Jewel’s Leo Bar was sired by Sugar Bars and out of Leo Pan by Leo. The dam Sissy Freckles was Sissy Randle by Bar Jez by Leo Bar. Leo Bar was sired by Three Bar and out of Flit by Leo. The dam of Bar Jez was El Leo by Leo. Sissy Randle was out of Jane Randle by Bob Randle by Flying Bob. The dam of Bob Randle was Miss Bob by Flying Bob. Flying Bob was the Cajun bred son of the thoroughbred Chicaro, probably quarter horse racings most influential sire in the late 1940's. Then Three Bars took over in the 1950’s. Tigh Cowan recalled how they came to own Tuff Time Peppy, “Stanley Johnston told dad that he thought the Peppy San Badger horses could possibly be a good cross on our program. The noted cutting trainer Barb Schulte, through Page 30

THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012

Stanley, lined this horse up for him, and that is how we got him. We used that horse a fair amount and it worked well for us.” Stanley Johnston’s appreciation for Peppy San Badger was well founded, as his last stallion Sak Em San was sired by Peppy San. Peppy San was a full brother to Mr San Peppy, the sire of Peppy San Badger. Peppy San and Mr San Peppy were NCHA World Champions and AQHA Hall of Fame stallions. The next stallion on this list was Boon Dox John. This son of Boon Bar came to the Cowan's by way of an Australian named Stanton. Here is what Tigh Cowan had to say about this move, “A gentleman from Australia named John Stanton came to spend some time with Dad. He was a terrific horseman and we learned a lot from him. He was exporting horses to Australia. He bought some Doc’s Jack Frost mares from Stanley and sent them to Australia in the early 80’s about 1983.” Stanton’s mission was to buy horses for export to Australia. He did it by buying two or three horses and then selling one and exporting what was left. Tigh recalled it this way; “Stanton found two studs in either Oklahoma or Texas that were full brothers and one of them was Boon Dox John. He called Dad and said he had a stud that needed a home and that he was taking the other one to Australia. That is how we got Boon Dox John. Dad actually changed the horses name to Boon Dox John, after John Stanton.” Boon Dox John was sired by Boon Bar by Doc Bar. The dam of Boon Bar was the great blue hen mare Teresa Tivio. She was sired by Poco Tivio and out of Saylor’s Little Sue by Black Hawk. Black Hawk was a full brother to San Sue Dark’s the dam of Leo San. They were sired by San Siemon and out of Little Sue by Sam Watkins. Boon Dox John was out of Dude’s Queen by Bandera Dude. The dam of Bandera Dude was Little Sibo by Barney Blue by King P-234. The dam of Dude’s Queen was Deloris Bar by Bronze Bar. Bronze Bar was a son of the thoroughbred Provocation by Three Bars and out of Golden Rocket. Provocation was a full brother to Rocket Bar, the paternal grandsire of Dash For Cash. Deloris Bar was out of Lometa’s Sunday by Joe Sunday by Joe Reed P-3. Joe Reed P-3 being a double grandsire of Leo. The dam of Lometa’s Sunday was Miss Lometa by Bob Randle, the sire of Sissy Randle in Tuff Time Peppy’s pedigree which is more of that Flying Bob blood. Tigh explained what happened from there, “His plan was to take Sun Frost daughters and out cross them on these horses. But what actually ended up happening was we took the Tuff Time Peppy horse and bred him to the foundation type ranch mares. Took those fillies and crossed them on Sun Frost and with mares from that cross, crossed them back on Tuff Time Peppy and Boon Dox John. It was a crisscross pattern that seemed to be very effective.” THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012

Tuff Time Peppy counts among his foals Peppys Doc Frost, a winner of the CHA Nebraska Non-Pro Futurity and the South Dakota Classic Cutting Non-Pro Futurity in 1994. This horse was out of Sierra Frost by Sun Frost. She was out of Miss Pansy Sue by Laughing Boy. PC Satin Times by Tuff Time Peppy was the 1988 Nebraska Futurity $10,000 Non-Pro Futurity Champion and Reserve Champion of the South Dakota Classic Non-Pro Cutting Futurity. She was also an NRHA money winner with a first in the Flagstaff, AR NRHA Open Class. PC Peppy Habony was the Reserve Champion South Dakota Classic Non-Pro Cutting Futurity. These two cutters are out of Hobby Roan Lady by Melody Sport. An example of the Sun Frost on Tuff Time Peppy comes from PC Mr Sun Peppy. This 1996 stallion is a two-time barrel racing champion in the Can Chasers Classic Futurity and the Sunrise Breeders Futurity. He was sired by Sun Frost and out of the Tuff Time Peppy mare PC Peppy Kate. The dam of PC Peppy Kate was Cross Fire Kate by Sak Em San and out of Prissy Cline, the dam of Page 34

Sun Frost. Another example of the Sun Frost/Tuff Time Peppy cross is PC Frosted Kate. PC Frosted Kate is the winner of the 2010 Cowboy Classic 2D Finals. PC Frosted Kate is a full sister to PC Mr Sun Peppy. They are both double bred to Stanley Johnston’ blue hen mare Prissy Cline. “Boon Dox John died young and with Tuff Time Peppy we had gotten a lot of fillies out of him so we let him go. Both certainly did a good job for what Dad wanted to do. Then after that we got Docs Oaks Sugar,” commented Tigh about the entry of Docs Oaks Sugar to the breeding program and the next step in the Cowan breeding program managed by the Cowan Brothers. Docs Oaks Sugar was sired by Doc’s Oak a three quarter brother to Boon Bar. They were both sired by Doc Bar and out of a Poco Tivio mare. The dam of Doc’s Oak was Susie’s Bay by Poco Tivio. She was out of Susie L by Jess Hank by King P-234. When I asked Tigh about why they bought a Doc’s Oak stallion he responded, “To be honest we liked Doc’s Oak

but what I was really after was the horse’s mother and her Leo/Sugar Bars blood that we thought would cross back on what we were doing. That is what made sense to us.” The dam of Docs Oaks Sugar was Miss Sugar Bingo by Mr Sugar Boy by Sugar Bars. The dam of Mr Sugar Boy was Croton Breaks by Croton Oil by Leo. The dam of Miss Sugar Bingo was Cutie Bingo by Leo Bingo. Leo Bingo was the AAA AQHA Champion son of Leo and out of Beggar Girl by Beggar Boy Docs Oaks Sugar came to the Cowan Brothers through the recommendation of Mike Kevil, famed horseman and trainer that is noted for his ability to start colts. Mike had worked at one time for Pat Cowan. Tigh reported that the horse had been hurt and that was why he was available. Kevil had ridden the colt and he reported the colt had a lot of ability and so on Kevil’s recommendation Docs Oaks Sugar came to South Dakota.

PC Cajun Oaks that is definitely a very capable upper class type of horse that we can haul anywhere and be competitive. We not only bulldog on him, we rope calves and heel on him. I’ve got a seven-year-old boy that is fixing to go run steers on him.” Some of the AQHA performing foals sired by Docs Oaks Sugar include PC Jokers Wild. This 1993 bay gelding is a twenty-time Youth World Championship qualifier in six events. He has been to the finals five times. His events include tie-down roping, heading, heeling, breakaway roping, team-penning and working cow horse. He was the 2005 AQHA Youth High Point Breakaway Roping Horse and earned AQHA top ten high point finishes for the year ten times. He was also the AQHA Reserve High Point horse in Breakaway Roping in 2008. PC Jokers Wild is also a finalist in the South Dakota Classic Cutting Futurity.

Tigh talked about what they found in this son of Doc’s Oak, “Docs Oaks Sugar conformation wise was very correct. I looked at that as a cow horse type conformation and when we started using him I realized how much speed and agility he brought to the table. Docs Oaks Sugar has simply amazed me.”

PC Jokers Wild was out of PC Cajun Lady, a great producing mare for the Cowan Brothers. She was sired by Sun Frost and her dam was Poco Chileta by Poco Speedy. Poco Chileta was out of Woodfern by Driftwood. PC Jokers Wild is a full brother to PC Cajun Oaks, the bulldogging horse Tigh referred to above. PC Cajun Lady was the dam of PC Dox Cajun, a son of Boon Dox John that was used in the Cowan Brothers breeding program.

We have a number of horses by him in use today and we just lost him a year ago. You can take those horses and go do anything with them. My son has a bulldogging horse

PC Jokers Wild showed his cutting ability in the South Dakota Classic Cutting Futurity but he wasn’t alone in Docs Oaks Sugar’s ability to sire cutting horses. Docs Continued on page 42...

PC Shodo Frost is a stallion for Hodges Farms of Omaha, TX. Their son Cody and him have been roping since April with over $20,000 earnings. Their most recent win was a World Series #12 Roping in Athens, TX. He is a full brother to PC Poco Dell Frost. Page 38

Oaks Sugar is the sire of PC Patty Oak, the 1992 South Dakota Futurity Non-Pro Champion; 1993 South Dakota Maturity Non-Pro Champion and the 1994 Non-Pro Champion for the Western States Cutters. This horse was followed by Miss Sugar Tule, by Docs Oak Sugar as the 1993 Nebraska Futurity Non-Pro Champion and the 1994 Nebraska Maturity Non-Pro Champion. All three of these cutters were ridden by Larry Cleveland. PC Sugar San Boon is a 2000 gelding that is a three-time AQHA Select World Show qualifier in Tie-Down Roping. This horse has earned 19.5 AQHA open and amateur performance points. He is sired by Docs Oaks Sugar. His dam is PC San Boodini by Boon Dox John. This mare is out of Stan San Lady by Sak Em San. Her dam is Miss Cindywood by Orphan Drift. Her dam is Poco Judy Sue by Poco Speedy and out of Judy Sue, by Driftwood. Tigh pointed out how the Sun Frost/Docs Oaks Sugar worked the other way with Docs Oaks Sugar being the broodmare sire. For example, PC Sun Joaker, winner of the Bold Heart Performance Fund 2D Barrel Race is sired by Sun Frost and out of PC Oaklace by Docs Oaks Sugar. The dam of PC Oaklace was Sun Lace by Sun Frost. Sun Lace was out of Poco Cokey by Poco Speedy. Her dam was Rivbear Coke by River Bear. Cross Fire Kate was one of the great mares to become a member of the Cowan Brothers broodmare band. This mare is very special as she was one of only two daughters of Prissy Cline. Prissy Cline was the dam of Sun Frost and nine other horse colts. Cross Fire Kate was

sired by Sak Em San by Peppy San. Cross Fire Kate entered the Cowan broodmare band and her second foal was PC Peppy Katy, the dam of PC Mr Sun Peppy by Tuff Time Peppy. Her first foal by Docs Oaks Sugar was PC Fire N Smoak. This stallion is the sire of PC Frosty Fox the 2002 5 State Barrel Racing Futurity and the 2003 and 2004 5 State Barrel Racing Maturity Champion. The next foal out of Cross Fire Kate was PC Surefire Winner and this 1984 palomino mare was a winner. She is a six time PHBA World Champion. She has won her titles in Heading, Heeling and Flag Race. She was also the 2003 PHBA Honor Roll Heeling Horse. PC Surefire Winner was sired by Docs Oaks Sugar. The next stallion we will profile is Cash Native, Tigh told how he came to the ranch, “A friend of mine Tim Tillard out of Wyoming was using Cash Native and they got a number of fillies out of him and he recommended we use him.” Cash Native was an AAA rated racehorse sired by Dash For Cash and out of Shesanative by Hesanative. Shesanative is out of Mona Bird by the thoroughbred Good Bird. Mona Bird was out of Mona Leta by Leo. Mona Leta was the 1952 AQHA Champion Quarter Running Three-Year-Old Filly. She in turn was out of Hot Heels by Midnight Jr. The dam of Hot Heels was Joan, a daughter of Joe Hancock. Joan was the dam of Steel Bars, an AQHA High Point Halter Stallion for B. F. lips Jr. before he bred Dash For Cash. Tigh explained that he knew about Dash For Cash but didn’t know how they would ride and that made him hesitant about using a Dash For Cash horse. But through some research, they found that Cash Native’s dam Shesanative was a good producer. She was the dam of eleven foals, earning money on the track and ten of them were ROM. She was also stakes placed in the 1976 Oklahoma Futurity. PC Cashanova is a 2000 gelding by Cash Native. This gelding is a barrel racing futurity money winner and full brother in blood to PC Dash of Frost, a noted bulldogging horse. They were out of daughters of Sun Frost on mares sired by Laughing Boy. The blood of Driftwood was reintroduced with the use of Lone Drifter. Tigh told how it came about, “Mel Potter called me the spring of 86 not long after Dad was killed wondering if we were interested in taking Lone Drifter. But we had too much stuff going on so we passed on it. But a couple of years later and we had seen some horses by him and things were slowing down we called Mel and told him we would like to use the horse. So he worked it out for us and we had him a couple of years.” Tigh explained what he saw in the Lone Drifter horses, “We had watched some of Mel’s horses and some other horses by Lone Drifter and I thought those horses used the ground and were as lateral as any horses I had seen. I was really impressed with how those horses could use their body and do it so easy.” He continued about how they bred Lone Drifter, “So when we got him we crossed him on some of the bigger Sun Frost mares that we had. It darn sure worked. Those horses were really really fluid. It was a good cross on the mares we had here, no matter if it was Sun Frost, Docs Oaks Sugar or Boon Dox John mares. It just really worked.” He concluded, “The Lone Drifter was different than the Orphan Drift blood although both of them brought a lot of stuff to the table with what we were trying to do. The Lone Drifter horses could stop like the Orphan Drift horses and they just used the ground phenomenally giving us a tremendous athlete. The horses we're using today, that come from our venture with Mel, are still displaying that ability.” Probably the most well known performer by Lone Drifter is PC Lonewood Ike. This good Lone Drifter gelding left the Cowan Brothers to become a part of Mel Potter’s program. This gelding has won in excess of $500,000 with wins at major NFR events like Cheyenne and the Pendleton Round-up. He is a multiple NFR qualifier and NFR round winner. His dam is PC Acapoco Sun by Sun Frost. She was out of Poc Wood by Wilywood. Wilywood was sired by Orphan Drift and out of Oui Oui by Poco

Page 46

Speedy. Oui Oui was out of Woodfern, a Driftwood mare. Pocwood was out of Poco Fancy Rebel by Poco Speedy. The dam of Poco Fancy Rebel was Cheenawood by Orphan Drift. The dam of Cheenawood was Poco Chilena by Poco Speedy. One of the interesting things about the Cowan Brothers breeding program is that they have carried on good stallions and interesting infusion of mares. When you look at the sire record of Sun Frost you see a group of foals out of some race bred mares. Tigh tells us how that came about, “This set of mares came in through a very good friend of ours named Jim Colouble of Mission, South Dakota. Jim went south and ran into an old cowboy racehorse man named Ottis Gafford. He bought some mares from this man and if you saw these mares you wouldn’t care about how they were bred. All you had to do was see them and how they moved.” Tigh went on to explain, “Jim had gotten six or seven of those mares and they were 15.1 and as pretty and as balanced and as flat made as they could be.” He continued, “We researched the bloodlines and that made us a little nervous because we hadn’t done this before. But when he brought those mares and unloaded them and it was a treat. There was Rare Dee an own daughter of Rare Bar out of a Signature bred mare. There was Gee Gee Decade. It was a deal that worked.” Rare Dee’s sire Rare Bar was sired by Rare Jet by Fast Jet. The dam of Rare Bar was Miss Fair Dolly by Fol’s Native, a son of Hesanative, the broodmare sire of Cash Native. The dam of Rare Dee was Rebels High Bid by Highly Significant by The Signature. Rebels High Bid was out of Bunnys Rebel by Bunny Bid. Bunnys Rebel was out of Patsy Cause by Rebel Cause. Rare Dee is the dam of PC Frosty Rare Bar, winner of the Bold Heart Breeders Open Futurity Champion and PC Rare Bar Frost, winner of the Clack-A-Drome Winter Futurity. Both of these horses were sired by Sun Frost. Gee Gee Decade was sired by New Decade, a son of the thoroughbred Azure Te. Azure Te was sired by Nashville and out of Blue One by Count Fleet. The dam of New Decade was Jets Little Lady by Jet Deck, a World Champion racehorse. Jet Deck was sired by Moon Deck by Top Deck and out of Miss Night Bar by Barred. Barred was sired by Three Bars and out of Ready by Red Joe of Arizona. Red Joe of Arizona was a three quarter brother to Joe Reed II by Joe Reed P-3. Joe Reed II was the sire of Leo. The dam of Gee Gee Decade was Bunny Gee a full sister to Bunnys Rebel the second dam of Rare Dee. They were sired by Bunny Bid and out of Patsy Cause by Rebel Cause. The First foal out of Gee Gee Decade was PC Gee Gee Frost, Sherry Cervi ‘s great barrel mare that died after becoming ill at the NFR finals. This mare was a success-

ful Barrel Futurities money winner and was the Reserve Champion of the Washington BRA Derby. PC Gee Gee Frost is a full sister to Billy and Holli Etbauer’s great stallion PC Frosty Bid. This stallion is a major barrel racing money winner in events like the Wrangler Tour 4, 1D Jackpot and the Wrangler Tour 2, 2D Jackpot. His AQHA show record shows him as a 2011 AQHA World Show Senior Barrel Racing qualifier with his ROM and 21 performance points. A third mare from this group was JC Ol Diana. She was a daughter of New Decade. Her dam was Ol Diana by Tex Oh by Three Ohs. The dam of Ol Diana was Miss Betta Moon by Top Moon by Moon Deck. Top Moon was out of Rica Bar by Barred. When they bred JC Ol Diana to Docs Oaks Sugar they got another bulldogging horse in PC Snoopy. Snoopy is the traveling partner of PC Cajun Oaks. With the success of Sun Frost came Frances Loiseau and her foundation mare Casey’s Lady Love. One of the daughters of Casey’s Lady Love was Casey’s Charm by Tiny Circus. The third foal produced by this mare was French Flash Hawk, (Bozo) the winner of five WPRA World Champion Barrel Racing titles and a five time PRCA/AQHA Horse of the Year titles. The success of Bozo lead to many other champions and noted breeding horses including the leading Barrel Racing sire Frenchman’s Guy and PC Frenchmans Heyday (Dinero)(full brother to Bozo). The mating of Sun Frost with the Loiseau mares is legendary in its success. But here is another daughter of Casey’s Lady Love by the name of Frenchman’s Fox. This

stakes winning mare won the South Dakota Derby. She was sired by Laughing Boy. When bred to Sun Frost she foaled PC Frenchmans Fox. This mare is the dam of PC Frenchmans Ella, a Fizz Bomb Barrel Racing Sweepstakes finalist. PC Frostmans Fox is out of Frenchman’s Fox. She is sired by Sun Frost. PC Frostmans Fox is the dam of PC Frosty Fox by PC Fire N Smoak by Docs Oaks Sugar and he is out of Cross Fire Kate by Sak Em San and out of Prissy Cline. PC Frosty Fox was the winner of the 2002, 2003 and 2004 5 State Barrel Racing Futurity and Maturity. This makes PC Frosty Fox double bred to the great Prissy Cline. PC Dox Sox is another daughter of Sun Frost and Frenchman’s Fox. This mare is an NCHA money winner. She is the dam of Frenchmans Fire Fox by Special Effort. He is a proven racehorse by placing in six of seven races. This young stallion is currently standing at Jim and Joni Hunt’s Open Box Rafter Ranch. The wonderful part of the Pat Cowan story is how the Cowan Brothers Tigh, Tork and Treg have carried on with their father’s breeding program. We often find when the patriarch of a breeding program dies something goes with him and the program changes or dies out. That is not the case with the Cowan Brothers breeding program as they have carried on, building the program and keeping the Pat Cowan legacy alive and well. Larry Thornton is a pedigree analyst and breeding consultant. If you have any questions concerning this article or other bloodlines, call Larry at 479-885-3144 (evenings) Please try again if you do not reach Larry the first time.

This is Bree’s state winning polebending horse. She is by PC Sun Wood and PC Frenchmans Nicole by Sun Frost and Leige Jet. She also ran college barrels with her. She is a 1999 model.

Spiritual Food from Gods Feed Truck

There are something’s that make you stop and wonder what’s really going on here. Truth is often hiding behind a mask. Sometimes even a horse will put a mask on to cover up the truth. For example while loping the edge off a fresh horse it doesn’t take some of them long to figure out that the more tired they appear the less work they have to do. These are the same horses that when you ride to the herd and start to work they squeal and kick up over their heads, boy is that fun! I have witnessed fear do a similar thing in a wild mustang. He appeared to be brave and gentle. He would always present himself as if he was looking for attention. He would let me touch him on the face and showed no apparent signs of aggression, or fear. I gently rubbed on his forehead awhile before I tried to put the halter on him. This is unusual behavior for a mustang; most of them don’t want to be touched and would prefer that you don’t ever get close to them. After a little while this horse allowed me to put a halter on his head. It was at that moment truth was revealed. His eye changed and his nostrils flared, the underlying emotion of fear had consumed this horse. In his attempts to save himself he became aggressive and charge forward at me. He was on a mission and he had the advantages of size and surprise over me. I think humans are often just like this horse we hide behind a mask because we don’t trust the people around us, we are quick to either run from our circumstances or fight for what we think we deserve. We often blindside those around us with how we react to things. ll Timothy 1:7 says “God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and love and of a soundmind.” So then when fear of not being accepted, or failure or whatever form it comes in, recognize it is not from God and is from the enemy trying to get you to take his bait. So take heart and fight back with the power of God and speak out loud of your mouth what God says about your situation by reading scriptures that pertain to it. 1 John 4:4 “you are of God, little children and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” Smile God Loves you and something good is going to happen to you today!
