I read in a recent article that the number one trait that ranchers consider first in culling their herds, even more important than fertility, is disposition.

In other words, ranchers don’t care if a cow is open, just as long as she’s a GENTLE barren cow.

That’s why the Beef Improvement Federation has developed a scorecard so you can rank your cattle’s dispositions. It’s a tool you can use to get rid of the bad actors in your herd, but I’m against that because if we all prevented the wrecks that occur around a cow outfit then Baxter Black and I wouldn’t have much left to write about.

The BIF’s scoring system starts off with a #1 animal who is docile, calm in the squeeze chute, and when released, he or she exits calmly. Personally, I have never owned such an animal but I respect the BIF so I’ll take their word that such a beast does exist. A “number two” struggles, shakes, quivers and froths at the mouth when cattle are worked, which describes me to a “T”. So I must be a #2. The system goes on up to a #6, an animal that has pronounced attack behavior. The problem, as I see it, is that BIF’s system does not go high enough for my cattle.

Take for example, the first beef animal I ever owned: a #7 if there ever was one. My teacher selected a show steer for me that flew out of the cloth-topped trailer on its ride to my place. My teacher then explained to me that I was supposed to actually get in the pen with the monster and halter break it. “You gotta be kidding,” I replied.

He was not. I almost quit the FFA and joined the glee club right then and there.

I named my steer Abe, not because he showed signs of greatness but because like our great President, his hair wouldn’t comb either. In preparation for the county fair we had a field day, and boy was it ever. It was held on the Little League ball field and my steer drug me around every base before I slid into home. My ag instructor then grabbed the halter and Abe took him for a turn around the bases and nearly knocked him out of the ballpark.

I figure it served my teacher right.

An example of a #8 would be a cow we owned that never did see the inside of a squeeze chute, or my corral for that matter. The only time I ever saw her after she was born was at a neighbor’s branding. I said he could keep her but he insisted that I come and get her. When she was older than the Rolling Stones she died a natural death without ever feeling a rope, a brand, or the feeling of motherhood.

A #9 should measure up to the bologna bull I sold years ago that put one ring man in the hospital and charged the bull board in front of the auction block with such ferocity that it put a permanent crease in the beer belly of the other ring man. The auctioneer was attempting to chant and look for bids, which were not rapidly forthcoming, and in revenge for selling him to a packer buyer the bull then jumped on to the auction block where he became permanently wedged. The auctioneer then invited the packer to “Come and get YOUR bull.”

If you value domesticity above all else I hope you never own an animal like a cow we called Mark Spitz. (For any youngsters who might read this, he was a famous swimmer.) She was an example of a #10 if there ever was one. First we couldn’t get her in the chute and then we couldn’t get her out. That’s because she flipped over backwards and landed upside down in the chute. We used a cutting torch and a winch to get her out and when we did get her upright she thanked us by chasing my wife, who thought she’d be safe if she dove into a stock pond. Silly girl. The cow followed her right in. And you know how much cows hate to swim! My wife was dog-paddling as fast as she could and despite what she says, I really did try to come to her rescue by throwing her a lifeline lariat.

From a safe distance away, of course.

With cows like Mark Spitz it’s no wonder the BIF denied my membership, thus advancing the cause of beef cattle improvement by at least 50 years.

e just returned to the rainy Northwest from sunny Hawaii – quite an adjustment. Now it’s back to reality.

Plans for the National Show are pretty well set, thanks to the Haskell’s. See information elsewhere in this issue.

The Board will have a teleconference on March 6 to finish plans for the remainder of the year.

Please remind your regional associations that the Hall of Fame Award nominations need to be back to me by Aug. 1, 2011. There will be a form in the next issue of the Journal.

Plans for the International Congress are pretty well set. More info will be forthcoming from the International Office.

Not much going on here in the Northwest but won’t be long before we start seeing those pretty white tails on the new calves and it will be haying time.

As we pass the halfway point in our fiscal year, the Association is struggling with a slight loss due primarily to a decrease in transfers year to date. Please remember to transfer those animals you sell thus giving the buyer a way to be in touch with the Association. Also, membership dues were due in December. Make sure you send those in so that you can continue to register and transfer your calves as well as receive the Journal. I will continue to work on the past due accounts so if you receive a letter requesting payment please contact myself or Karen in the APA office so that we can get it cleared up. On the good side, registrations are up year to date by 11%. Remember the APA board has set aside funds to assist each region with their advertising. So far, Southwest is the only region to use some of these funds. These are use it or lose it monies so lets get busy advertising and then send your receipts to me so that I can get you reimbursed.

Our Association remains in a solid financial position thanks to your support. We appreciate you.

he Midwest Pinzgauer members & their cattle are in a word....COLD! This winter has been unusually cold in the Midwest. The weather began to change the first weekend in December because the Midwest Badger Kickoff Classic held in West Allis, Wisconsin Region would not be the same without snow & bitter cold temperatures. Never the less we had a great showing of Pinzgauers and had a fun show. A few Midwest Members headed from one cold state to another.....Colorado for the National Western Stock Show in Denver. While Pinzgauers may not be currently exhibited there you can always learn a thing or two from your fellow cattleman. It is all about networking, building friendships and getting the most out of life. In the meantime, think Spring and frolicking calves in the fresh green grass rather than the four feet of snow!

he northeast breeders are busy making plans for the National Pinzgauer Show. The date is set, the hotel is in place and the Lobster Banquet (or choice of steak) is planned! Fryeburg Fair (host fair) is excited Northeast to have the show! We are planning a silent auction at Region the banquet to help with expenses. Any monies left after expenses will be donated to the Pinzgauer Scholarship fund. We are looking for donations for the silent auction. The hotel rate will be good for beyond the dates of the show, so if you want to stay longer you can. We are working on having a place for cattle to stay if you wish to stay beyond the show, as the cattle have to be out of the barn by midnight Oct 2. Fryeburg Fair is Maine’s largest agricultural fair. Fall foliage season will be just about at its peak and the Maine coast is only about 50 miles away.

The demand for Pinzgauer beef is increasing here in the northeast. One local college is now using Pinzgauer beef in its cafeteria.

Bon Appetit ™, the food service company, prides itself on using locally raised meats and produce. They started using Pinzgauer beef last summer and have increased their demand because of the high quality of the meat. Breeders that are marketing their beef in small local stores or directly from their farms are finding the same results.

The weather has been mild here in the Pacific Northwest. Feed is plentiful as we reach mid-winter, but grain prices keep rising. Hopefully, high grain prices won’t affect feeding those show cattle.

The NWPA’s first youth show of the season will be Northwest held at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds in May. Region We always have a great time at the show. We will have a potluck, barbecue hamburgers, and hold our white elephant gift auction to raise money for the youth. We will, also, have our annual meeting prior to the barbecue.

The Junior Gazette

ello everyone,

The cattlemen’s conference was February 11th and 12th at the Wintergreen Resort in the Wisconsin Dells. The Midwest Association had a social gathering along with the Friday banquet and entertainment.

The Midwest Pinzgauer juniors will have the 2011 board members election in March. Also in March we will be getting our essays ready for the royalty contest. Good luck to everyone. I hope we get a lot of participants to make the contest interesting.

This gives us juniors a chance to show more than once. Like they always say “practice makes perfect.”

I hope everyone had a safe and joyful winter.

Spring and green pastures are just around the corner here in Wisconsin.

As winter is coming to an end our juniors will start getting their animals ready for Valley Beef in Seymour, Wisconsin; June 3rd through the 5th at the Outagamie County Fair Grounds. There will be a fitting contest on Friday night.

Saturday is the open show and Sunday is the junior show.

The pictures to the left are of Pearl Franke. She was 11-years-old and bought her first Pinzgauer steer. At her first show in Elroy Wisconsin she won Grand Champion Junior Showmanship and second in light weight meat class. In September she got third in Junior Showmanship and third in the meat class at Richland Co. Fair. He weighed 1265 lb. and sold for $1.40 per lb. This was her first steer project and she has joined APA and Midwest this year and has another steer project.

The Effect of Nutrition on Reproduction in Beef Cattle

Reproductive status of the beef cow is directly related to the nutrient requirements. Most beef cows must conceive, carry a calf to term, give birth, and wean a calf in a 12-month period; therefore, she is either pregnant or lactating at any given time.

Once the cow becomes pregnant her body requires an increase in nutrition to support growth of the fetus and she is usually also nourishing a calf on the ground at the same time. This can increase her requirements by 50% to 100% above maintenance.

A negative energy balance during early lactation modifies the signals that initiate ovarian activity.

The beef cow utilizes tissue energy, which results in loss of body condition, to counter the negative energy balance of early lactation. In other words, if she is in poor body condition going into calving she will lose weight trying to nurse the calf and her ovarian activity will shut down and may not cycle until after the calf is weaned. Therefore, it is very important to know what the condition of the cow herd is so that feed may be adjusted to support different cow body conditions. Usually the heifer which has just calved for the first time will need to be fed better than the older cows which are already in good shape. In a study done at Washington State University involving several thousand beef cows, only 75% of first-calf heifers became pregnant compared to 97% of 4-9 year old cows.

One of the best ways to estimate nutritional status in the cow are body condition scores (BCS) . This is best accomplished by visual and tactile (feel) appraisal of muscle and adipose tissue. Condition of the cow is accomplished by visualizing the amount of muscle and fat, or lack thereof, over the back, hooks, tail head, ribs, pins and brisket (fig.1). Body condition may more accurately estimate tissue reserves than body weight.

Weight loss during the pre-calving period is associated with loss of fetus, fetal fluids, and placenta, whereas increases in weight are associated with digestive tract fill needed to support lactation and an increase in udder size. Most beef cattle condition scoring systems use a 9-point scale, with BCS 1 being extremely thin (and usually unable to stand) and BCS 9 being extremely fat.

usually non-cyclic with no functional structures on either ovary (fig. 4). Cows in moderate condition such as BCS 4 (fig. 5) and BCS 5 (fig.

6) are more likely (40-60%) to be cycling twomonths after calving. Figure 7 shows ovaries from a cow with a corpus luteum in the right ovary indicating the cow that has ovulated and is cycling normally.

For a cow to go from one body condition score to another usually requires a gain of between 50 to 75 pounds so it cannot be accomplished over a short period of time and may require supplementation with grain or alfalfa hay, or both.

Restricted rations often occur during periods of drought, when pastures or ranges are overstocked, or when winter rations are skimpy. Also, many range operators regularly plan that cows in good flesh should lose some condition during the winter months; they feel that it is uneconomical to feed sufficient to retain the fleshy condition. Fortunately, during such times of restricted feed intake, animals have nutritive reserves upon which they can draw. Although they may survive The Pinzgauer Journal - March 2011

for a considerable period of time under these conditions, there is an inevitable loss in body weight and condition; and, varying with the degree of underfeeding there may be a slowing or cessation of growth (including skeletal growth), failure to conceive, and increased death rate. Low feed intake also commonly results in increased deaths from toxic plants and from lowered resistance to parasites and diseases.

During times of energy shortage when animals are withdrawing stored energy (mostly from body fat ) the mobilized fat may not be completely metabolized with the result that ketosis develops. I have seen several cases of this following calving where the cow, or heifer, is dull and acts like they have no desire to function. They usually respond to intravenous injections of glucose, calcium and magnesium but the loss in body condition often results in a slow, or failure, to breed back.

Trace minerals are also important elements that may be involved, however never forget that ENERGY , usually supplied from good quality grass, or alfalfa hay, is the most important nutrient.

Selenium deficiencies cause white muscle disease in calves, retained placenta, abortion, and premature or weak newborn calves. Copper supplementation on many ranches has improved conception rates and immune responses to vaccinations. Zinc is important in many body systems including production of certain enzymes (particularly for synthesis of DNA, RNA, and proteins), carbohydrate metabolism, hoof structure and soundness, and improved appetite. Manganese directly affects bone growth in young animals and is crucial for optimum fertility in cows.

Also remember that water is very important for the health of cattle. I do not believe that snow as the only source of water is adequate. Cattle need to have fresh water at all times of the year. Bulls and pregnant cows need 6-8 gallons of water per day and lactating cows need 11-14 gallons per day. In the winter time the use of tank heaters is necessary or fresh running streams that should be kept open. If cows are forced to drink snow, or ice water, it takes most of the energy they can eat to keep warm.
