PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello Fellow Cattlemen, I hope everyone is having a great winter! While the weather has been great, so have the cattle prices. Well a lot of people will be getting into full swing of calving and time to start looking into new bulls or genetics for semen use. There are a number of breeders advertising in this magazine that should be able to help you out with your next purchases. Commercial cattlemen demand for the Maine-Anjou genetics is on a growing increase; once again ranchers are looking for those extra pounds in the fall and are looking towards using Maine-Anjou to provide them with it. And with that comes docilty, hair and functional cattle; everything a feedlot wants. On the Canadian Maine-Anjou front, things are running smooth around the office. Registrations are up which means breeders are doing business; that sends a message that the demand for Maine-Anjou cattle are up! So breeders take care of those commercial or purebred breeders when selling them bulls or females. With follow-ups on how your animals are working in there programs and how better you may help them down the road with return purchases. We also have a number of promotional Items in the office to purchase and hand out to customers or potential customers. Remember your first impression is usually your last impression and good business ethics makes for more business. In closing, I must say was out to a few cattle shows and the interest is positive in the MaineAnjou business; both here in Canada and South of the border. Keep up the good work breeders - supply a good product and you will be rewarded! Have a Great 2012! Stu Byman
OFFICE MAnager’s Report Hello Everyone! It is hard to believe that it is the middle of January already. By the time you read this you will have already received your membership renewals. ,Yes the new year is here again. The registration sale we had last October was a big success and many took advantage of registering many two year and older animals. Thank you to everyone that took part. We also had 40th Anniversary Jackets made up and everyone who purchased one has thought they are very nice. We are still able to order them so please contact me if you would like one. We still have some of our other merchandise in the office for sale also. The Alberta Association is busy working on plans for the AGM so I will be up-dating on that as the plans are finalized. Hope that we have a great turn out this year. I also had the opportunity to travel to Toronto for the Royal Winter Fair. I would like to thank the Ontario Association for their hospitality and support. I had a wonderful time attending the Maine-Anjou show. Many will be busy now with calving, I hope the weather is not to cold for the calves to get a good start. Registering these calves when they are young will save you a lot of money and also keeps your herd registrations up to date. Please also remember to advertise on the web site as it is a very good resource for marketing your animals Lois Chivilo

Douglas Bull Test Report
Manitoba Maine-Anjou Association held our fall meeting Dec. 15. Our board consists of: Sid Wilkinson, Sandi Underhill, Ross Mcbride, Connie Johnson, Patrick Johnson, Myron Lees, Barry Walker, Sean Egge, Curtis Hofer, Carmen Falloon - Douglas Bull Test Station rep and Janelle Johnson is our junior ambassador.
The Manitoba Bull Test Station started the 2011-12 year with 200 bulls from ten breeds on test. Eight of the bulls are Maine-Anjou coming from Cee Farms Maine-Anjou (Barry Walker), and Falloon’s Maine-Anjou (Carman & Laura Falloon).
We continued with our 4-H tokens this year and had good response with many sucesses in all catagories.There will be two bull sales held in Manitoba this year: Douglas Bull Test Station and Wilkinson Stock Farms. Our board would like to welcome new breeders Cam and Tracy Wood, who bought the Cee Farms cow herd, and also wish the Walkers good luck in their future endeavors. Manitoba Maine- Anjou Annual meeting will be held Feb. 1, 2012 in Brandon. On behalf of the Manitoba Maine-Anjou ,hope everyone has a good calving season and good bull sales. Thanks, Patrick Johnson
On the 56 day weight on Dec. 27, 2011, the station average daily gain was 3.88 pounds per day and the weight per day of age was 3.22 pounds. The Maine-Anjou had an average daily gain of 3.54 pounds per day and the weight per day of age was 3.17. The 84 day weight will be taken on January 24, 2012. The official test weight will be on February 21 & 22, 2012. An ultrasound test will be done toward the end of February. All bulls and heifers on test are BVD free. Open House will be from March 26 until April 6, 2012. Sale catalogues should be ready by March 26. These will be available on line as well. Sale day will be Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. at the bull test station. The bull test station is located 17 miles east of Brandon on Highway #1 and ½ mile southeast on Highway #351. Starting this year, all test bulls and heifers will be eligible for sale, if the producers wish. The data collected for weight per day of age (WDA) and average daily gain (ADG) will no longer determine the sale eligibility, but will still be published in the weight reports. All bulls and heifers must pass a veterinarian evaluation (including semen, scrotal, structure, female palpation and pelvic measurements) to be qualified for the sale. Harold Franklin Clement - June 12, 1926 – June 7, 2011 (Excerpts from Harold Clement’s obituary - Crossroads This Week, December 23, 2011 – Nesbitt Publishers, and from other sources.)
Harold Clement of St. Louis, Missouri, and longtime resident of Russell, Manitoba, passed away on June 7, 2011 with family at his side in St. Anthony’s Hospital at St. Louis, Missouri. Harold was born on June 12, 1926 to Frank and Margaret Clement of Binscarth, Manitoba. In 1946 he married Jacqueline Adolphe of Russell, and together they raised three children: Fred, Michelle, and Melodie. His first wife passed away in later years and he married Elaine Spence of St. Louis, Missouri. Along with others, Harold Clement was one of the early workers within the Canadian Maine-Anjou Association. He was president of the Canadian MaineAnjou Association from 1976-77. In 1995 Harold Clement was guest speaker at the Canadian Maine-Anjou annual meeting at the Russell Inn in Russell, Manitoba. This was the 25th. anniversary of the breed organization. He told of his early involvement in travelling to France and other parts of Europe, and the establishment of his own herd. He had a herd of Maine-Anjou and also Simmental cattle at the Clement Bar C Ranch. He, along with Lucien Cancade, was part of the Achilles Cattle Company. This man was in the forefront of many things and he had a vision as to what the future could be for these kinds of “exotic” cattle. Harold was involved in business in Russell and area for over 50 years. He was involved in ownership of Frank Clement & Sons (oldest GM dealership in the world at one time), Clement’s Farm Equipment (a Case dealer for over 60 years), Clement Fertilizers (brought anhydrous ammonia to area in 1976), and Clement’s Bar “C” Ranch (growers of registered seed, cattle producer, and pioneer in PMU industry). On a national level, he was President of Canadian Farm Equipment Dealers Association and President of Canadian Maine-Anjou Association. Provincially, he was Vice Chairman of MACC (Manitoba Credit Corporation), board member of ACC (Assiniboine Community College) at the time of its construction in Brandon, director of MB Stock Growers, director of MB Farm Machinery Board. Harold travelled widely whether it was on cattle business or other. He was involved in many local activities and other endeavors, too numerous to mention.
