We can read just about anything regarding the beef business or food animal production in the national news. The consumer is against what we do. The consumer loves us and wants more information. The science is amazing. The science is complicated. The weather is crazy. The government doesn’t do us any favors. We’re wrecking the environment. Some days, it seems as if we either aren’t doing a good job communicating the benefits of agriculture or we’re the scourges of the earth!

Several recent surveys clearly prove the consumer is disconnected from the reality of how all food, but particularly beef, get to their local supermarket. Yet, with the significant increase in beef prices in the meat case, the consumer continues to buy beef. They may be adding more ground beef to their weekly menu rather than higher priced cuts, but beef sales continue to be good.

A fact that needs mentioning is the historic, unprecedented markets we are experiencing in cow-calf production. If you hosted a production sale this spring, it’s highly likely the sale average at the end of the day was $500-$1,000 or more than last year. If you have marketed four or five weight feeder calves in the last few months, the aggressive market is shocking. For those retaining ownership on a pen of finished cattle that “hit a home run” on the grid, you realize the carcass price on a few could be $2,000-$2,500 each.

Troy Marshall, seedstock producer and contributing writer for BEEF magazine suggested in a recent article, “The Decision to Expand isn’t as Simple as It Once Was, the revenues generated today encourage one to consider just how to spend it. “With the market windfalls that are possible today, do you pay your bills and buy a new pickup? Do you cover the costs of your kids’ college educations? Or do you take that vacation you’ve been promising your bride for 20+ years? When your business must expand to provide for your family, expansion of your business, when given the opportunity, is a given. However, today’s prices make that decision no longer solely a financial one, as an acceptable standard of living from a financial standpoint is being obtained for the first time without undergoing an expansion.”

USDA Market News for July 23, reported, “Ground beef sales have jumped, pushing both the cow cutout and finished cattle cutout higher this summer. The cow cutout jumped $32 since June 1st, due to the fact that the main product, which is ninety percent trimmings, jumped about $50. Those large increases put support under the primal chuck and round from finished cattle because they can also be processed into/for ground beef.”

This market cycle can’t last forever. We all know that. However, most analysts indicate the production side of the beef industry could enjoy the cycle for at least five years. The Sterling Profit Quotient reported recently in Drovers/CattleNetwork showed a $214.05 per head net revenue increase in cow-calf production from 2011 to 2014.

The prevailing thought that keeps coming to mind is most producers have new options. Instead of operating from calf crop to calf crop, producers can explore options from expanding the herd, improving genetics, changing management strategies, paying down debt or as Troy Marshall suggests—take a vacation.

Possibly the best news to Cow-Calf producers is the fact Charolais genetics and Charolais’ influence in the food chain is relevant. The efficient production of more pounds and red meat yield is being rewarded like never before. The genetic ability to remain efficient in value-added niches such as natural or non-hormone treated cattle (NHTC) can be claimed by only a few breeds, including Charolais.

Beef industry opinion leaders are encouraging producers to think differently. Use this favorable marketing environment to make improvements to position your operation for the future.

New Technologies Provide New Opportunities

By Jared Decker June 17th, 2014 prior to the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Meeting and Research O nSymposium, a group of breeders meet in Lincoln, Nebraska to discuss the development of

genomic-enhanced EPDs for the Charolais breed. A genomic-enhanced EPD combines traditional pedigree EPD predictions with genomic predictions from a DNA test.

The tour started with a visit to the GeneSeek facility in Lincoln, where producers saw the workflow of how DNA tests are processed. The importance of a clean, well collected sample was stressed. GeneSeek emphasized that it is working to automate as many steps as possible to decrease turnaround time and cost for beef producers.

Jared Decker, University of Missouri Extension, talked about use of high-throughput DNA sequencing to improve fertility by selecting against DNA variants that cause embryonic losses during pregnancy.

The cost of DNA sequencing has rapidly dropped in the last 15 years. In 2001 it cost about $10,000 to sequence a million base pairs of DNA. In 2014 it costs less than 10 cents to sequence a million base pairs. This rapid drop in the price of DNA sequencing has enabled

researchers to tackle questions that previously could not be addressed. With this sequencing data researchers at the University of Missouri are identifying loss-of-function variants (broken genes) that lead to pregnancy losses. The group has obtained whole genome sequences for approximately 200 bulls. (The genome refers to the entire DNA of an animal.) From these bulls, the group will identify a group of candidate embryonic lethal variants. These candidate variants will then be tested in a group of 10,000 heifers, and those variants never observed as two copies will be validated as causing embryonic losses. This allows the development of a genomic EPD based on the number of embryonic lethal variants that an animal carries that causes losses of fetuses during pregnancy. This genomic EPD will be unique as it will test the actual variants responsible for the trait, not just evenly space markers spread throughout the genome.

Dorian Garrick, Iowa State University, discussed the development of genomic-enhanced EPDs for the American International Charolais Association. In beef breeding, we seek to move the distribution, or cloud, of animal performance. He gave an example of the relationship between birth weight and weaning weight. Animals that have high weaning weights tend to have high birth weights and animals with low weaning weights tend to have low birth weights, but some animals have high weaning weights and low birth weights and vice versa. Thus, there is a distribution of performance within a breed. We can select parents from any portion of this cloud to move the breed average for multiple traits. We can select which parents to use by looking at the distribution of their offspring’s performance. Typically we think good bulls produce good calves and bad bulls produce poor performing calves. But, a good bull will produce a range of offspring that range from really good to average to poor. The genetic merit (breeding value or EPD) of a bull is based on the average performance of his progeny. When estimating genetic merit, bulls and females within a breed we have different amounts and reliability of performance information. We account for the differences in the amount of information on an animal using a statistical procedure called BLUP (Best Linear Unbiased Prediction). The EPDs predicted by BLUP estimate the average genetic merit of that animal’s offspring. But, we can also think of EPDs as the sum of the effects of all of the gene

variants that particular animal carries. Garrick said this can be considered the portfolio of the gene variant effects an animal carries. The goal of genomic prediction to genomically-enhanced EPDs (make them more reliable) is to test an animal’s DNA to sum up the effects of all the genes it carries. Rather than testing one or two genes, a genomic prediction uses tens of thousands of markers spread throughout the entire DNA of an animal.

To illustrate the process of developing a genomic prediction, Garrick discussed retraining of the Hereford genomic predictions. By going from about 3,000 animals to 10,000 animals the amount of variation explained increased from about 30% to 45% on average for each trait.

Garrick also discussed that predictions do not work well across breeds when the target breed is not in the training data. This is due to different strings of variants inherited as a unit, called haplotypes, present in different breeds. When genomic predictions do function well across breeds it is because there are haplotypes carrying large effects that are shared across breeds.

Creation of a genomic-enhanced EPD for Charolais is currently underway at Iowa State by Dorian Garrick’s group. There have been several issues with matching up the genotypes with the trait measurements, but these issues are being resolved. Once genomic prediction equations are estimated, GeneSeek will process genotypes and calculate genomic predictions for tested animals. Angus Genetics Inc., the service provider for Charolais National Cattle Evaluation, will then use these genomic predictions as a correlated trait to improve the reliability (accuracy) of the estimated EPDs. The boost in accuracy is highest for young animals with very little information.

The release of genomic-enhanced EPDs for Charolais is on the horizon. Leaders within the Charolais breed continue to work towards the best strategy to generate additional genotype and trait data moving forward.
