2011 BLUE RIBBON AWARD HONORS RIVER VALLEY 4-H Each year the Siskiyou Golden Fair honors an individual or organization that has gone above and beyond supporting the fairgrounds. For 2011, the River Valley 4-H Club has been selected by the 10th D.A.A. Board of Directors to receive the Western Fairs Blue Ribbon Award. River Valley 4-H Club has been working throughout the year to complete a service learning project at the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds. The project includes replacing and upgrading parking lot signage. The new signs have reflective properties and varied colors for better visibility at night and include signs that better identify handicapped parking in the front parking lot. The idea for the project grew from members helping park hundreds of cars during the 2010 Siskiyou Golden Fair. To achieve their goal of replacing the signs and educating club members about what it means to have a disability and thus the need for more handicapped parking, the club applied for a grant from the California State 4-H Service Learning Program.

The River Valley 4-H club was chartered in 1998 after the communities along the Klamath River and Scott Bar decided to join forces and have one large 4-H club instead of several small clubs. This move was done to offer more projects for the youth and to provide members with the opportunity to work in larger groups to accomplish common goals. “Enhancing the leadership, citizenship and life skills of our members is key to building strong communities,” said Robyn Walsh, River Valley 4-H Community Leader. “Organizations like the Siskiyou Golden Fair thrive because of community minded individuals and organizations that get involved for the good of all and River Valley 4-H the members and leaders are to be commended for their support of the Siskiyou Golden Fair” stated Cliff Munson, CEO. Join River Valley 4-H and the community at the flagpole on opening night as we all celebrate the 2011 run of our county’s traditions.

A TOUCH OF THE WILD SIDE!

RETURNING TO THE GOLDEN FAIR Nope it is not Batman and Robin but don’t let that stop you from taking in one of best juggling acts in America. Tennessee-born Terrell Hayes, and his Japanese wife, Takako, have created something unique. Both are accomplished Jugglers – with clubs, knives, torches, balls, rings, boxes, scarves and more. But that is not all, the dynamic duo are also skilled as unicyclists, mimes, clowns, balloon sculptors and origami artists. Additionally, Terrell’s talents include hat manipulations, cup manipulations, “devil sticks” and rope spinning. New this year will be an origami center where Takako will create origami art with the young and young at heart. Look for this addition in the schedule of event!

The south lawn at the Siskiyou Golden Fair is once again walking on the wild side! This year Karla Majewski is bringing Pacific Animal Productions to Yreka for five days of exotic exploration for fairgoers. Several thousand square feet of lawn will be home to exotic animals, birds and bugs from around the world. Have you ever seen a Binturong, a Hedgehog or a Kinkajou? How about a Kookaburra, a Bettong or a Coatimundi? Don’t miss your chance at this year’s Siskiyou Golden Fair. FREE with price of entry, this show is sure to please.

KNOWLEDGE IS GOLDEN

POUNDING IRON

2011 brings some exciting new activities to the Siskiyou Golden Fair and one of those is the Nuggets of Knowledge educational adventure that will encompass every corner of the fairgrounds. AAA of Yreka in partnership with the fair has created a maze of amazing facts about the fair, the county and our communities. “This stuff is a hundred and fifty years of information” stated David Jespersen, activity coordinator, “Siskiyou County and the fair is filled with amazing history, heritage and culture”. Join educational mascot “Earl the Frog” at 15 locations across the grounds, where you will find interesting information about Siskiyou County and those who call it home. Daily winners will be selected from those that complete the contest and take their answer card to the Friends of the Fair information booth. Prizes will include fair tickets, carnival wrist bands and incredible edibles from the fabulous fairtime food concessionaires. As part of the Nuggets of Knowledge educational adventure, AAA will be offering a chance to win a spectacular gift basket for all those that visit AAA of Yreka in the Yreka Junction Shopping Center and join AAA or get a quote on auto, home or life insurance. For a limited time AAA is offering a $25 dollar gas card for switching to AAA auto insurance and a second $25 card for adding your home insurance to the policy.

Blacksmithing used to be a common profession and thanks to Tri Counties Bank the Village Blacksmith will be at the Siskiyou Golden Fair August 10-14. In the 19th century, every town and village had at least one smithy working over his anvil, making horseshoes or farm implements, his red-hot forge blasting behind him. Michael Olson is a blacksmith. With his bare-chested, muscular frame, brown beard and long hair pulled back in a pony tail, and wearing a kilt adorned with “dragon scales” and calf-high boots, he looks like one, too. And he can hammer out a horseshoe in no time. Olson and his wife, Christy Horne travel extensively six months each year and will be at the Siskiyou Golden for the first time in 2011. Their show is a unique blend of storytelling by Horne accompanied by “live anvil accompaniment” from Olson, as the couple’s advertising cards put it. They bring their “stage” with them. It’s a 31-foot-long flatbedtruck named Florence that Olson designed and built to look like a small castle, with turrets on the top. With several shows each day, and each one different, the Village Blacksmith is sure to warm the soul of the young and the young at heart.

This group stacked with song-writing talent and honorees in Western Music, has energized crowds throughout California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Montana & Canada for more than 25 years at nightclubs, casinos, fairs, rodeos, regional concerts, cowboy events & many name act openers. It’s not Country-Western folks – it’s Cowboy ‘n Swing and the sounds of the west in a family friendly setting! Come on out to the Siskiyou Golden Fair on Siskiyou Telephone’s “Everyone’s a Kid Day” where everyone 7 and older gets in for 2 bucks and enjoy the Stardust Cowboys for FREE.

AT THE 2011 SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR! Country music legend Ronnie Milsap will take the stage at the 2011 Siskiyou Golden Fair on Thursday, August 11 at 8:00PM. The Siskiyou Golden Fair has a long tradition of bringing in quality entertainment for the Thursday night concert and this year is no exception. “This is an opportunity for folks of all ages to witness a country superstar sing number one hits all night long”, said fair CEO Cliff Munson, “It’s gunna be Pure Love”. Ronnie Milsap has recorded for more than 4 decades and had his first number 1 hit with “Pure Love” in 1974. Ronnie has been awarded male vocalist of the year 4 times, had CMA song of the year twice, CMA album of the year four times and has been awarded 6 Grammy awards for his vocals. “This is the golden opportunity to see Ronnie in Northern California and Southern Oregon this year and we can hardly wait until August 11”, said Munson, “I Would Not Have Missed It For The World”, Milsap’s 19th number one hit, says it all.” Ronnie continues to record on the Liberty label and in 2009 recorded “My First Ride” with Trace Adkins as a tribute to fire fighters and police officers in the United States and Canada and Milsap released a new old time hymn and gospel album in March of 2009. The new album titled “Then Sings My Soul” contains the number 1 hit “Up to Zion”. “The board of director’s goal is a big show every year” said Munson. “August 11th is going to be an awesome night.”

This is a time for all those young people who have worked so hard in raising their animals to get some well-deserved recognition. THE DAPPER DIAPER DERBY Blue Ribbon bragging rights for 2011 will occur on the PremierWest Bank Mall Stage on Sunday, August 14 at 3:00 p.m. with the Siskiyou Golden Fair Diaper Derby. Every year, parents bring their tiny tots to compete in the “beginning fair exhibitor and patron contest” that begins a life time love affair with the Siskiyou Golden Fair. There is no doubt that parents, grandparents, siblings and other team members are often much more entertaining than the babies themselves. All babies under 18 months of age are eligible to enter. Entry forms are available at the fair office anytime up to 10 minutes prior to the derby. All forms must be returned to the office by 2:50 p.m. on Sunday, August 14th. All participants receive ribbons and the final heat competitors will win a great stuffed animal from Paul Maurer Shows. The champion will take home a $50 savings bond from Tri Counties Bank.
