Our maternal cow base is the ‘factory’ upon which our entire operation is built. Our philosophy dictates that continuous phenotype culling without remorse will pay dividends in the long run. We strive to maintain and improve a volume base of docile, productive, solid structured females that are reproducing the next generation of bulls for our customers and replacement females for us.

Rogers Bar HR October Charolais 100

Bulls

It’s Simple:

More Pounds Equal More Money!

Proven Performance:

30th

Rogers Bar HR’s focus is on Charolais. Our

program is designed to produce the best • Our bulls have won more BIF Certified rate of gain tests than any other Charolais in the breed. We are the largest Charolais breeder breeder in the South, and one of the oldest • Winner of the 2021 Florida Bull Test breeders in the country. We have been - #1 out of 101 Bulls performance testing to produce only the best • Be it grass or grain, our bulls will put Charolais for over 60 years. Let us put our on the pounds for you bloodlines to work for you and your operation. • More pounds, more money!

True Forage Based Program:

• Bulls are not creep fed • Weaned bulls are not put in a grow yard they are developed on GRASS. • The same grass they will be eating at your place - bermuda, bahia, star, and ryegrass

Resilient:

• Our bulls are bred in the South, raised in the South, and they will work for you in the South • The heat and humidity of the South will not slow these bulls down • They will not melt on you during the summer • Rogers Bar HR bulls do not need an adaption period - they just do their job with no additional pampering

VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS

The more we know, the better we can make our cattle

The information train is moving…

T

o say that Charolais seedstock producers are breeding better cattle today than a couple of decades ago would be a gross understatement. The progress being made from year to year in birth, weaning, yearling weight and milk as documented in the most recent AICA National Cattle Evaluation is beyond remarkable. That progress didn’t happen by accident. Producers embracing the use of genomic data, expected progeny differences (EPDs), better health and nutrition information have continually raised the bar. The implementation of single- step genetic evaluation accelerated breed improvement even more. The bottom line is the more we know, the better we can make our cattle. The combination of computer technology and DNA provide near real time feedback. The progress is so rapid and the technology so complicated, often, the most difficult piece of the equation is how to communicate the value and the importance of the next generation of genetic selection tools.

herds. The company focuses on developing decision-support tools based on feed efficiency, in vitro fertilization and data analysis. Session 3: Possibly most important to Charolais producers is Sally Northcutt’s presentation The Value of Data Submission. Sally and Bill Bowman launched Method Genetics in 2014. Northcutt’s work in beef cattle improvement using singlestep genetic evaluation has enabled registered and commercial producers to make rapid, consistent genetic improvements in their operations. Session 4: Kevin Shaffer and Matt Wilson, West Virginia University will present WVU Feed and Water Intake Research. Shaffer is an assistant professor and extension livestock production specialist, specializing in ruminant nutrition. Matt Wilson is a professor of reproductive physiology at WVU. Session 5: The afternoon’s presentations will conclude with a Q&A session with all previous four session presenters

Charolais seedstock producers and commercial cow-calf operators and cattle feeders that recognize the value of Charolais genetics continue to aggressively pursue documented progress and are being rewarded. A few years ago, the AICA board of directions and staff launched the first Listening & Learning session designed to specifically address livestock production issues specific to geographic areas in the U.S. Each year, the location changes. While the individual sessions may be similar from year to year, the fact the events are held in different geographic locations and the speakers are experts in their fields make the annual events incredibly relevant and educational. The 2021 Listening & Learning Sessions will be hosted by West Virginia University and held Saturday, October 2, at Rymann Memorial Farm, Wardensville, West Virginia. The program will begin at 12:45 p.m. and will most assuredly be of value to progressive beef producers. Session 1: A discussion titled “The Future of Precision Livestock for the Cattle Industry” will be presented by Justin Sexten, Director of Strategy & Product Development, Performance Livestock Analytics. Performance Livestock is a premier data collection and analytics service with robust software applications to support beef producers and assist with risk management. Session 2: Guy Ficeto, Vytelle will discuss Feed Efficiency’s Role in Precision Livestock Management. Vytelle is a precision livestock company reshaping how cattle producers optimize their

participating. It’s easy to think educational sessions, like L&L, are all the same and maybe not relative to your operation. It’s also important to realize how fast the information train is moving toward beef improvement across all production sectors. Charolais seedstock producers and commercial cow-calf operators and cattle feeders that recognize the value of Charolais genetics continue to aggressively pursue documented progress and are being rewarded. Consumers are showing their preference for quality beef with their checkbooks every day. Let’s not forget we have the tools to make sustained genetic improvements with every calf crop. We are very grateful to Immucell’s First Defense for their sponsorship of the 2021 Listening & Learning Sessions. We also are grateful to West Virginia University for hosting the event. We hope you can join us Saturday, October 2, 2021, for an afternoon packed with information presented by engaged stakeholders that also recognize the value of Charolais to quality beef production. For more information, contact David Hobbs (816) 464-5977 ext. 200, dhobbs@charolaisusa.com or Miranda Hoag, AICA Communications & Event Coordinator (816) 464-5977 ext. 102, mhoag@charolaisusa.com.

Lewis Meyer Retires from AICA

AICA Controller, Lewis Meyer retired August 30. We would like to thank Lewis for his 21 years of service. His assistant Chastity Stulz will fill the position. You can reach Chastitiy at ext. 300 or cstulz@charolaisusa.com ONLINE TIPS

Transfers cannot be done on-line if the paper has already been issued. The original paper must be returned to AICA. Animals registered on-line can be held in the system for transfer or print later. Many members find it helpful to hold all the newly registered animals in the system. No need to chase papers around. When using a non-Charolais parent, follow the example given on the entry screen. For a non-Charolais female type FNF-XXXX, for a non-Charolais male type FNM-XXXX. You may also use breed codes to indicate the breed of the non-Charolais animal but be sure to use 4 digits (example: FNM-ANAN). We can add the pedigree of your other breed animal but need a copy of the pedigree 1st. The fee to add a pedigree is $20. Be sure to click the “register” box and the “save” button at the bottom of the registration screen if you want the animal registered. The registration number will pop up in the middle of the screen or you’ll get an error message telling you what boxes you have missed. Expedited Registration Work

If an animal needs to be registered with in a day or two a rush fee of $50 will be added to work. Once the animal is registered you can pull it up online to view the registration number. The new certificate will be mailed out the following day. We also offer FedEx mailing for additional $50. Fall AICA Board of Directors and Committee Meetings

The 2021 Fall Board of Directors and Committee Meetings will be held November 13 – 14 in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition National Roll of Excellence Show, at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center, Louisville, Kentucky. Watch the Charolais Journal and AICA website for the schedule and hotel information. New ONLINE Lab Results

New online lab results! View your lab results with one click. Under the “herd” tab, click into “My Lab”. Your DNA tested animals will be listed there. Click the “view” button to see details on each animal. You can also download the results in an Excel file by using the “Lab Test Results Export” under the “tools” tab.

RAMBUR CHAROLAIS MOVES FORWARD WITH EXPORT CONNECTIONS by Linda Eck Building relationships throughout the industry and across the world has put Howard Rambur in the driver’s seat for marketing opportunities that benefit both his Montana ranch and his customers. Just a few days before the gavel dropped on his 43rd annual bull sale, Howard spoke plainly about the value of everything from inquisitive travelers and the food supply shortage in China, to healthy cattle and the often unspoked but continued romance people have with the American West. Those things combined with good management and strong relationships brought Rambur Charolais into the business of exporting both live animals and quality beef.

Traveling Down a Country Road Admiring the presence of some Buckskin heifers grazing nearby pastures, a trip along the backroads led some Virginians, who had never seen the Charolais x Red Angus cross, to stop in and question one of Howard’s customers. That simple inquiry led to discussion with Rambur, followed by a visit and supper with some Turkish bankers and a few months later, the shipment of 2,500 head of Buckskins or as some call them, Panama Reds, to Turkey. “Exporting is just a connection,” said Rambur. “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Rambur Charolais runs a 250-head registered Charolais cow herd, along with 100 registered Angus. While that’s a sizeable outfit, it’s hardly big enough to meet a one-time shipment of 2,500 replacement heifers. That’s where 42 years of bull sales and a long list of satisfied buyers came in handy. With cooperation of his customers, Rambur was able to gather enough cattle to meet the demands. But, while it sounds simple, it’s just not that easy. “There’s a lot of health protocol,” said Howard, referring to the blood tests and identification processes. “Our exporter likes northern Montana,” he added. “There’s no Blue Tongue when compared to southern cattle.” Testing for the virus is required in animals considered for exportation. As testing and paperwork were compiled, the heifers were gathered into eastern North Dakota for a 30- to 45-day quarantine before being trucked into Philadelphia, Pa. where they were again held for two to three weeks before being loaded onto a carrier for the 30-day trip to Turkey. The heifers handled the trip well. “Cattle actually gained weight, which hardly ever happens,” said Rambur.

China’s Food Supply Shortage Draws Demand for Beef

While visiting with a JBS representative in the Fall of 2020, the demand for beef in China made its way into the conversation as the company had recently received a sizeable request for beef. That conversation turned into an opportunity for Rambur Charolais to provide cattle that would meet order requirements for processing and shipment to China. “China is in a food supply shortage and they’re acquiring a taste for beef,” said Rambur. This connection through JBS resulted in the sale of 300 fat cattle to JBS from Howard’s Rambur Charolais Feedlot. Cattle were sold on the grid and Rambur received a premium on carcass weight and real-time data. Both steers and heifers were sold with steers dressing 44% Prime and 56% Choice. Heifers topped out at 39% Prime and 58% Choice. The beef was shipped direct to China. Placing beef into the food chain to China was relatively simple for Rambur with a feedlot operation included on the ranch. “I just had to sign off on practices,” said Rambur. Additionally, RC Feedlot sells approximately 50 head of beef annually for custom slaughter to customers in and around the Richland County ranch. Meat is sold under the brand “Montana’s Best by Rambur Charolais”. Our calves are hard corn fed, they’re not grass fed, they’re Primes,” he said, noting the ranch typically harvests 600 acres of corn and hay each year to supply the feedlot. Rambur also utilizes his feedlot for a buy-back program, offering customers an option for cull bulls and cows. The animals are shipped to slaughter facilities in Minnesota and Nebraska.

Moving Forward Admitting that exporting “fell into my lap” Rambur looks to his new connections as an opportunity to provide an added service for customers. “Covid and the economy has taken a toll on exporting live cattle,” said Rambur but that isn’t stopping him from moving forward in creating options for the ranch and its customers. “When this settles down, there will be opportunity.” Meanwhile he is working with his customers and a new packing plant in Sidney to create a direct line for shipping meat to China. “Those customers like to know where the meat is coming from. They don’t want it coming from a 20,000-head feed yard,” he said. “We want to show a division between the large feed yard and a family operation. They also like the romance of the American West.”

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR OPERATION FROM ANIMAL ACTIVISTS by Paige Nelson

Seven ways to prevent an animal rights protest on your farm. A global pandemic had a devastating impact on many business and industries, cattle production being near the top of the list of those affected after packing plants had to all but shutter their doors. Unfortuately, animal rights activism wasn’t inhibited by lockdowns and working from home mandates. “In fact it may have reenergized the movement, in that people had a little bit more time on their hands. They had more time to engage with other activists. They had more time to become more committed to their causes, in some cases. Some areas even increased in activity,” explains John Sancenito, president of INA, Inc., a security consulting firm.

Tactics Using a call from the oldest of playbooks, Sancenito says activists have even blamed agriculture for causing the pandemic. Among other “fake news” activists circulate via social media, they continually blame animal production for global warming. While protest methods were altered during the pandemic, they weren’t slowed. Sancenito’s latest data show worldwide animal rights protests jumped from 403 in 2019 to 846 in 2020. Direct actions — those in which crimes are committed — rose slightly from 331 in 2019 to 343 in 2020. When sorted into agriculture-related protests by country, 2020 saw the United States soar past other countries with 156 protests alone. Canada came next with just 45. Direct actions against U.S. agriculture reached 180. The next closest was hunting which accounted for 80. The most common form of direct action, says Sancenito, is trespassing, second is animal liberation, in which activists enter an animal agriculture setting and steal and/ or release animals into their “natural habitats.” For my cattle, that would mean skirting the working corrals and swarming the hay stack! But clearly, attacking animal agriculture is a main objective for activists. That means, according to the experts, if you own beef cattle, you are a target. Additionally in the information age, don’t think a motivated activist won’t be able to locate your operation just because you live in rural America. If they look for you, they can find you, says Sancenito. 28  

S E P T E M B E R 2021

Protecting your facility Assistant Sheriff Jim Naugle of the Sonoma County California’s Sheriff ’s Office ensures producers there are ways to prepare and protect against animal activism. Naugle describes Sonoma County as a fairly rural county in northern California with a significant agriculture population. “Protestors are typically from out of the area,” says Naugle. “These aren’t local people with a local understanding. They don’t understand the agricultural community and how much you actually care for your animals. They have a different view on the ag industry and what they believe it is.” He says the most difficult part for law enforcement when dealing with protesters is balancing the First Amendment rights of the people with the rights of the property owner. “To the property owner, that line seems very clear, but unfortunately, sometimes it isn’t as easy to do. Technically [law enforcement is] a neutral party. We’re there to make sure everybody obeys the laws,” clarifies Naugle. That balance of rights tips when protesters: • enter your private property, • disrupt your business, and/or • take your assets. Due prevalent activity in the past by protesters and three or four instances where hundreds of people gathered on farms within the county to protest, Naugle’s department has adopted a zero-tolerance policy. “We don’t write citations,” he states. “If you get arrested at a protest for breaking the law, you’re going to get booked. And if there’s felonies that we can book you on, we will book you on them. That has tended to get their attention.” The main activist group Naugle deals with is Direct Action Everywhere (DXE). Even as DXE has increased its activity throughout the nation, Naugle notes, his county has seen a decrease.

Helping yourself Just plan on dealing with activism at some point, says Naugle. He recognizes no one ever bought into a ranch thinking they would have to deal with activists. But the fact is, protests are increasing, so it’s better to be prepared.

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

Helping law enforcement Naugle says there are several ways ranchers can help law enforcement when protesters begin gathering down the road from your place. NO. 1. Call law enforcement immediately. “I was born and raised in the ag industry and married a dairyman’s daughter,” Naugle clarifies. “I understand farmers and ranchers a lot of times are not really in a hurry to call for help. In these instances, call as soon as you see them coming!” An early reponse by law enforcement allows the officers time to arrive, prepare themselves and have the proper resources in place. They show up quickly, describes Naugle. A few large transport buses can bring in a couple hundred protesters, a strategy they use to overwhelm the business. NO. 2. Avoid becoming part of the problem. It’s difficult for land owners to not become involved with the protesters, he acknowleges. Tensions are obviously high. But shouting matches and fist fights between the two parties only blurr the lines between whose at fault. NO. 3. Have your information ready. Be ready to supply law enforcement with as much information as possible, says Naugle. Things like: who is responsible for the premises and what the rules are at the facility — think biosecurity issues — are helpful. NO. 4. Proper authority. Having someone with enough authority to identify who should and should not be on the property and why is critical to helping the officers perform their duties. The property owners are best, but managers and supervisors are sufficient. NO. 5. Work for good legislation. Naugle encourages producers to be involved with groups like the Animal Agriculture Alliance and their local Farm Bureau or other industry groups to promote and establish legislation that will protect property rights. A constant topic of discussion in California is the use of drones, says Naugle, whether they can be flown over ranchers or not. He encourages all producers to work within their counties to establish strong drone ordinances.

Have a plan so that you and your employees know what to do in the event people show up to protest. Naugle encourages vetting employees. A common form of activism is infiltrating businesses as employees, when really they are there to gather intel, says Naugle. “Make sure you’re doing a good job vetting your employees, doing as much as you can to figure out who you’re hiring.” Good fencing is important. Your fence doesn’t have to be expensive, notes Naugle. “Most ranchers that I know don’t want to put up big fences with razor wire. Part of the charm of owning property is being able to enjoy the property and the openness of it.” Just do your best to make it clearly obvious where people should and should not be. Ensure there’s no place, no gap in the fence that activists can say they accidently walked through. Install proper signage on your perimeter fencing. Every state and every county may have different views on what proper trespassing signage is, says Naugle. His advice: Make sure no matter where you’re standing on your perimeter fence, you can see a no trespassing sign. It doesn’t have to be a billboard, just something so that it will be impossible for people to say, ‘Oh I didn’t’ see it,’ or ‘I missed it.’ Having a fruit or vegetable stand on your property where the public is invited to shop doesn’t mean the public has rights to your entire property. He encourages farmers to clearly mark where people are supposed to be and where they aren’t allowed. Cameras are great when the footage is useful, says Naugle. Make sure your cameras can shoot in quality high enough to make the shots useful. Also, point cameras in a direction that will capture information. “If we have a camera up high, we can count people, but if we can’t see faces, we can’t prosecute,” notes Naugle. Perimeter lighting is a deterrant. Automatic lighting may be hard with animals running around and triggering the lights all night, he acknowledges. However, activists coming onto your property to do reconasasance typically do not want to be seen, Naugle says. Any kind of lighting is better than nothing. Dogs may be your most effective tool. “My personal experience has been on several of these protests the most effective tool to keep them off your property has been dogs. It doesn’t matter if they are friendly dogs, mean dogs, whatever. We had a ranch that these protestors started moving toward. They closed all their gates and let their two dogs out and that is as far as [the protesters] went,” recalls Naugle. Lastly, Naugle strongly encourages ranchers develop a relationship with their local law enforcement. In Sonoma County, the sheriff ’s department has a specialized agricultural crimes task force. The deputies are trained in crimes against agriculture and ag businesses. They also do site assesments and help producers identify weak areas.

Do it now It may be stifleling to think that an activist uprising may be the next thing your business faces. If you’re immobilized by the thoughts of 200+ protesters showing up on your doorstep, start smaller. Sancenito encourages producers to take a good look around the farm. Think like an activist as foreign as that may seem. How would you attack your own farm? What are your vulnerabilities? Now that you know what they are, start your plan. Don’t be surprised by it. If it’s not something that you are ready for, it will overwhelm you quickly, reminds Naugle. Editor’s Note: Paige Nelson is a freelance agriculture journalist from Rigby, Idaho. CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

CYDECTIN ® (MOXIDECTIN) POUR-ON: LET THE GOOD GUYS ROLL. The industry's #1 selling pour-on brand contains the active ingredient moxidectin, which controls 33 parasite species and stages while remaining dung beetle friendly.2,3 In a study, manure from cattle treated with Cydectin showed no visible difference in the number of dung pats destroyed or buried compared to dung pats from untreated cattle.2 Dung beetle adults and larvae play a vital role in pasture manure management, recycling cattle dung, improving soil health and keeping other cattle parasites in check.

e l t t a C s s e HHess Cattle Muenster, Texas

We currently have around 150 head of registered and commercial Charolais cattle (mostly M6 breeding). We are losing several of the properties that we rent due to a housing development. That being said, we are going to have to sell at least 50 head over the next 6 months. All our cattle 4 years and younger are open and ready for bulls. All our cattle 5 years or older are running with one of these bulls listed below for the last 3 months. (We are going to replace all our bulls this year. Bulls will be for sale after cows are all bred.) – Chris Hess

Calf scours are not inevitable. A strong prevention program is non-negotiable. Dependable scour prevention is essential for calf welfare, employee morale and business profitability. The immune system’s response to vaccination is variable and unpredictable. That’s why giving preformed antibodies instead of relying on a vaccine to stimulate antibody production is so important. I’m all for removing uncertainties. So yes, I stand by this product. (And no, I’m not.)
