Did you know that cowboys in North America wore a brand before cattle did? As repulsive as it is to contemplate, Cortes branded Indians that he captured on the cheek with the letter “G”. Many of these branded Indians were sold to the first Mexican ranchers to herd their cattle. Terrible but true, the cowboys wore a brand even before the cattle did.

The history of the West is recorded in brand books. There’s a famous ranch down in Arizona called the Quien Sabe. How does a ranch get a name like that? One day a cowboy looked at a brand being worn by a steer and asked a Mexican “what brand is that?” To which the Mexican replied, “quien sabe” or “who knows?” Thus the brand and the ranch became known as The Quien Sabe. The Who Knows Ranch.

You may have heard the story how the the famous XIT Ranch got its name and its brand. It stands for Ten In Texas, the number of counties the ranch supposedly covered. That’s the myth anyway, actually the ranch only consumed nine counties. A syndicate got the ranch for building the state capitol building in Austin. Another early Texas outfit, still in business today, The Matador, used 50M for its first brand, the amount of money it required to capitalize the ranch.

Brands such as IOU, AC/DC, OK and Bar B Q have interesting stories to tell I’m sure. The brand “57” stands for the year a friend of mine went into the cattle business. The dollar sign brand, $, belonged to a man by the name of T.E. Money. He hoped the cattle sporting that brand made lots of it.

There are brands in the shape of diamonds, spades and clubs for gamblers who own too many cows. One imaginative rancher stamped his cattle with a brand that spelled out “2, lazy 2, P.” What do you think his story was?

Even the bulls that belonged to F.R. Lewis wore his “COW” brand.

Often brands were changed, sometimes legally. A friend of mine changed his brand after his divorce. He changed it from a “91 bar” to “bar 16” just by turning it upside down... because that’s what he said his ex-wife had done to his life. Sometimes brands were changed illegally with a running iron.

One cattleman tried to make his brand difficult to alter by branding his cattle “HEL.” That’s where he said anyone who tried to change his brand would end up. Another branded his cattle with a “45” indicating what a rustler would be looking down the barrel of.

My brand is “US.” That may conjure up an image of a patriotic American, bombs bursting in air while our flag was still there, and all that. While it is true I love my country I was not making a political statement when I claimed my brand. That’s not the story behind my iron.

Many years ago when I was just starting out the owner of an auction market made me a deal where he’d split the commission for any breeding cattle I got consigned to his auction. To get one cranky old codger to consign his cattle I made what turned out to be wild promises of what I thought his motley cow herd would bring at auction. When the day of the auction came there was just me and the auctioneer in the sale barn, or so it seemed. Rather than “no sale” the cattle and endure the wrath of the mean spirited cattlemen, and ruin my reputation in the process, I decided right then and there that I needed to go into the cow business. The cattle were awfully cheap and at least we’d get them sold. I feared for my life we if we did not.

The owner of the sale barn was also the auctioneer and as he sold each cow I announced the buyer as US Cattle Company. The auctioneer looked at me kind of cross-eyed but just figured I had an order in my pocket for the cows, which, of course, I didn’t.

After the sale the auctioneer came off the block and his first question to me was, “Who is this US Cattle Company?”

I looked him straight in the eye and said, “That’s US old buddy... as in you and me.”

Hello Pinzgauer Breeders, Here’s hoping your spring is above average. Don’t forget to register those great Pinzgauer calves. Registrations and transfers are down so far this year. We encourage all of you get your animals registered as the association depends on registrations and transfers to help cover expenses.

Beef prices are up here in the Northwest and hopefully, in your region too.

Unfortunately, so is the price of feed.

At the last Board teleconference, it was decided to put our website with EDJE. By doing this, we will get a lot more exposure for the breed. Kathy Dombroski has volunteered as our webmaster for several years and on behalf of the association, a big THANK YOU to Kathy for her efforts in this area. Please send your pictures, show results and other interesting articles pertaining to Pinzgauers to Nichole at EDJE. It’s our magazine and it’s only as good as the material we send.

We have had so much rain in the Northwest – 173% of our normal for the month in the first few days! In talking to breeders in Texas, they are having the worst drought in years and many are selling cattle because of the high cost to feed them. We will hope that the weather treats all of us well!

We’re having good response for the International Board meeting to be held here in the Northwest August 28 – Sept. 5, 2011. Many things are planned from cattle shows, Pinzgauer farm tours, as well as a chicken farm and a couple of dairy farms. Some sightseeing thrown in as well. Please get your reservations in soon as it would be nice to have a group from the USA. More information elsewhere in this issue of The Journal.

From all reports, Clayton Haskell and his committee are planning a wonderful National Show. Your good cattle and attendance is all they need to make it the best show ever! Nice time to visit New England to view fall colors.

Register those spring calves! What else can I say? Our association is only as strong as its membership. The majority of our budget comes from registrations and transfers. New members come from registrations. It is important to all of us to do the paperwork on your cattle. Regional advertising monies are still available so please use what is do you. The association is still teetering on the break even point for the fiscal year. Membership dues are strong. Thanks to all of you for your continued support.

ou gotta love the Midwest! One day it is 80 degrees and the next it snows! The Midwest Pinzgauer Association happened to volunteer to work the Wisconsin Beef Steak Wagon during the April Midwest Midwest Horse Fair on one of the days it decided to snow, rain & Region sleet with unbelievable wind gusts. All were in good spirits however to be working beside fellow Pinzgauer breeders & friends. The Midwest is gearing up for the Junior Show in June, District Show in August, World Beef Expo in September & Nationals in October. Check out our website for exact times and entry deadlines.

he Northeast Breeders are working on making the National Show a show to remember. We will be web casting the show live this year! This will be a first!

EDJE will be doing the web cast. Watch for information Northeast on the website as to how to view the show live.

There will be a youth beef steer show as part of the Region Junior Show this year. This will be a class in the Junior Show. Fryeburg Fair, host fair, will be providing premiums for the National Show. Visit the Fryeburg Fair website www.fryeburgfair.org for entry information and requirements. Entry deadline is August 15. 2011.

The menu for the Banquet is Lobster or Steak. Advance reservations and payment will be required. Again, watch the Pinzgauer website for more information on the Banquet. There will be a silent auction at the banquet, so please bring some items. Any monies left over after expenses will be donated to the Pinzgauer Scholarship fund.

We are looking forward to having the National Pinzgauer Show in Maine this fall and hope that we have a large number of cattle and breeders here for the show. Fryeburg Fair is Maine’s largest agricultural fair and fall is beautiful in Maine!

American Pinzgauer Association Board Meeting Teleconference Minutes

December 4, 2010

How much would it cost us to run credit cards with the current company and other prospects? National show bill not yet paid. Bill sent to treasurer was for $5000 from the southwest; however the national show budget is for $1600.

The bells were $1500. Board decided that the region will get what APA budgeted for and then the region would pick up the rest.

Grievance – no report Import/Export – no report National Show – Would like to simulcast the show, will cost $1900 to do it. Could some of the promotional money be used? Board decide that yes it could, regions would send unused promotional money to help pay for the simulcating.

The simulcast will be advertised one month before the show. There will be NO entry fee for the show; the only fee will be joining the Maine Livestock Assoc if you do not have a million dollar liability policy. Fryeburg will be paying premiums. Silent auction at banquet, all money raised will go towards the youth scholarship.

Performance – Rules – no report Open & Jr show rules – no report Web site –Kathy has been asked to take web site down; EDJE was asked what a web site would cost. For 30 photos and 5 -6 pages $425 one time set up fee then $155 per quarter after, would take 7-10 days to develop, would have update within 48 hrs. Can have advertising a $200 onetime fee we send information to the advertisers, can have a link to the journal, APA member to help keep the site updated.

Motion was made for EDJE to make a new web site and to

have Lisa work with EDJE to keep it current. Clayton made the motion for EDJE to do they web site, Jerry seconded, all approved. Will look into having advertisers help pay for the cost of the site, was decide that we would just start the site then put advertising on it. Donna will tell Kathy to maintain the web address and notify Karen that she has new people to work with.

New Business American Fullblood – gaining more interest, people don’t care about a registration paper, hope to attract more people for high 90% purebred - > American full blood.

Recognize % for American Fullblood - > fifth generation would be 96.8%, would stay with the breed standard, must carry traits and color pattern steering towards the Australian color pattern. Hope to gain more interest and numbers with in the breed. Would like to have the 95% or higher for American Fullblood. Motion made to make the American Fullblood 95% or better, motion was amended to include pictures of both sides of the animal to acquire a registration paper. Todd and Clayton, all approved.

Members need to be notified of the American Fullblood 60 days before the general meeting in the journal. Questions to be answered: When can cattle be registered on date passed and after or before date passed. Must pay more to register cattle depending on age, possible double papers?

Discount rate for one time registers of American Fullblood.

Northwest – Russell Bryant moved to AL, appointed Nancy Hankins to fill his place on the board Couple from Austria to attend national show Crossbred class talked about in Tyler – decided that they could be exhibited but not shown.

The Junior Gazette

e had a hard winter and a rough spring, as every year the Midwest Pinzgauer Association worked the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Steak Trailer at the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, Wisconsin. This year we had a turnout of 17 Midwest members in our group to work and even though it was April 16th, it drizzled with rain and snow in the afternoon. We all stuck through it with lots of warm clothing and once again had a great time working together.

As you know summer is finally on the way, all the snow is finally gone and the sun is shining. That means the Valley Beef Show is less than a month away. I hope everyone is working with their animals and getting them ready for show. We have several new juniors this year. Mark Leis, Pearl Franke and Samantha Kerian are the new members that will be showing with us at our junior show. Hopefully there will be several more that will join us by then. We will get the results of our Midwest Royalty Contest at the junior meeting after the open show, best of luck to everyone who participated. As last year’s Queen I can say that I had a wonderful time learning more about the cattle business

and participating in many events. It was a great experience.

Many of us will be showing in our local county fairs this summer and also getting ready for our Midwest Show at the Wisconsin State Fair. This event is a great way for families and others to get out and enjoy the fair and to take part in agricultural events that they might not get to experience every day.

Calving Abnormalities

The most common cause of calving abnormalities is a discrepancy between size of the calf and the pelvic area of the dam. If the calf has a large birth weight or the dam’s pelvic area is too small, the calf may have trouble coming through the birth canal. This type of calving abnormality can usually be eliminated or minimized by choosing bulls that sire calves that are small to moderate size at birth and making sure heifers are well grown and have adequate pelvic area.

Whenever you are checking a cow or heifer that is not making progress during labor, keep in mind the possibility of an abnormality. There may be unusual circumstances in which simple positional abnormalities do not allow for easy calving, but in a few rare situations it may be caused by a congenital or genetic defect that may hinder the birth progress. When in doubt, call your veterinarian.

Some congenital defects in calves are due to accidents in fetal development. Others are caused by teratogens. Teratogens are defined as any factor that cause an abnormality in a developing embryo or fetus. Teratogens include drugs, hormones, chemicals, viruses, toxic plants, high body temperatures, etc .

Many factors influence embryonic and fetal development and they are very vulnerable during this period of development.

During this time they can be easily altered by external influences. Dose, duration and timing are the main factors that determine what the outcome is, and whether a teratogen will produce a birth defect.

One of the most disturbing syndromes stockmen might encounter is schistosoma reflexsus . The spine of the fetus is U-shaped and the top of the tail is close to the head, and the fetus is turned inside out with the intestines exposed. These are a problem in diagnosis because you have to determine if there

is a ruptured uterus and the intestines are those of the dam or belong to the fetus. The key, however, is that all four feet are in the pelvis and the legs cannot be moved individually. In the photo, in figure 1, the fetus is laying on a canvas with the head on the left and the four legs are pointed upwards. The intestines are under the right side of the fetus with some visible at top right and the bottom right of the fetal parts. Most of these fetuses will not fit through the birth canal and must be removed by fetotomy (cutting the fetus into smaller pieces) or by cesarean section.

Schistosomus calves from purebred cattle should be reported as there may be a hereditary tendency.

Lupine toxicity occurs when cattle eat lupine between days 40-70 of pregnancy. Lupine plant toxicity occurs in the Western part of the United States. The mature plant is the most poisonous and it seems to be most toxic when the rains encourage fungal growth on the plant. The alkaloids from the plant affect the brain and act as a sedative, and the fetus is not moving. The legs and joints become stiff or fixed in abnormal positions (figs. 2 & 3). This may affect one or

more joints or limbs, or the spine. Occasionally some calves may be born with a cleft palate. Occasionally hemlock or any kind of a plant alkaloid or toxin can affect the nervous system. Also some of the viruses such as Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD) can cause various abnormalities at birth.

Fetal maceration (fig. 4) occurs when the fetus dies and the corpus luteum is retained on the ovary and can occur at any stage of gestation. The cervix usually opens and there is a fetid discharge coming from the vagina. This usually results in chronic maternal endometrial damage and the cow may have to be culled. However, usually you can open the cervix by slow steady pressure with the fingers and after about 10 minutes you can get your whole hand and arm into the uterus and bring out all the bones and stinky material and then flush the uterus with large volumes of warm dilute tamed iodine solution until it comes out clean.

Fetal mummification (fig. 5) may be seen at various stages of pregnancy and when it occurs near the end of gestation the fetus is retained in the uterus and there is a lack of fluid and the uterus is contracted around the fetus.

These must usually be removed by cesarean section or culling the cow because re-breeding may be poor. In one case I artificially inseminated a Jersey cow and when she did not calve at 9 months, I could feel the fetal mummy down in the abdomen. I let her go another 30 days and when she still did not calve we had to remove the large fetus via cesarean section. The BVD virus is known to cause the problem and I have seen it in herds infected with trichomoniasis as well.

Fetal emphysema (fig. 6) occurs when the fetus dies and gaseous bacteria cause the fetus to swell from distention under the hide. I have pulled some of these from a couple of heifers. One that I remember weighed around 750 pounds and the fetus was six feet long once it was totally out, so they will stretch. Many times the fetus is in a breech position when the calf dies and gas bacteria take over. Sometimes they may have to be extracted by fetotomy. The uterus should be flushed following this condition as well. Usually these will breed back.

Remember that often cows do better and may have a better reproductive future with a clean cesarean section (fig. 7) as long as it is done by an accomplished veterinarian. The reason is that you can do more damage with forced extraction, or fetotomy, to the pelvic canal with these situations, and the heifer may be more apt to breed back following a C-Section. Forced extraction or fetotomy may work if the person doing them is well trained and uses caution. No matter which method of correction is used they can all be a challenge to get out efficiently.
