I’m one of those people who said I’d never forgo the sending of traditional cards and instead send one of those form Christmas letters that we all get bragging about the exploits of the sender’s family. But have you seen the cost of a box of Hallmark Christmas cards lately? Couple that with the embarrassing problem of taking someone off your Christmas card list that you’ve mailed to for 30 years with no reply, only to receive a Christmas card from them the day before Christmas, which doesn’t allow you anytime to reciprocate in kind, well, I decided this year to have my wife write and send an e mail Christmas letter to everyone this year.

In having my wife write our first ever arrogant Christmas letter she discovered that it took too much effort. So we wrote an arrogant form Christmas letter that anyone can adapt for their own use. In the spirit of Christmas giving, I offer it to you.

Dear (a) Friends; (b) Relatives; (c) Business Associates; (d) People We Want To Make Jealous; Well, another year has passed and that means it’s time to send out our arrogant annual Christmas letter to (a) wish everyone a merry Christmas; (b) make our friends feel inferior. The (a) cattle; (b) corn; (c) cotton; (d) futures market; was at an all time (a) high; (b) low; this year and so our entire family will be spending this holiday season (a) on an around-the-world cruise; (b) serving dinner to the poor and homeless; (c) eating Christmas dinner with the poor and homeless.

To maintain the appearance of our garish and opulent lifestyle this Christmas (a) my husband leased and gave to me a fully loaded Cadillac Escalade; (b) we got a second mortgage on the house despite a credit score in the low two hundreds; (c) I got another job in town (my third.). For vacation we spent (a) two weeks in Tuscany; (b) one week at the county fair drinking beer and watching hog races; (c) a week picking up trash along the county roads as part of a guilty plea agreement in which my worthless husband was given two weeks of community service.

Our entire family this year was humbled and honored (a) as Citizens of the Year; (b) to appear on the Judge Judy Show; (c) to finally emerge from bankruptcy protection. And as a concerned family of environmentalists this year (a) we installed solar panels, new insulation and wind machines; (b) we test drove a Prius; (c) my husband vowed to either walk or ride a horse everywhere he goes as a result of his third DUI. In addition to his strong commitment to the farming and ranching community he (a) serves as chairman of the local United Way; (b) organized the local Tea Party; (c) hosts weekly poker games; (d) organizes the betting pool for local high school football games. I continue to serve (a) as dessert chairman for the Daughters of the American Revolution; (b) weekends in the local slammer.

Our oldest son Steve this year was active once again in (a) FFA; (b) Weight Watchers; (c) Juvenile Hall; and he finally (a) graduated from Harvard; (b) flunked out of alternative high school; (c) got his ankle bracelet removed.

Our oldest daughter Hyacinth was (a) Homecoming Queen; (b) an alternate member of the drill team; (c) knocked up by the Homecoming King. Our youngest son Josh this year got (a) his Drivers License; (b) ringworm from his steer that didn’t make weight; (c) his first tattoo and tongue stud; (d) probation.

Finally we know you’re all dying to hear about our wonder dog, Potlicker.

This year he (a) won a statewide sheepdog trial; (b) lost a paternity fight with a Shih tzu bitch; (c) got shot by the neighbor for killing his chickens.

President’s Message wonderful National Show we had! Everyone there thought it was

from Texas, it was a welcome sight! There were about 60 head there and were a great representation of the breed. For those of you who couldn’t attend, Edje has the entire show on the website for all to enjoy. Thanks to Nicole for being there the whole time to help wherever she could. Special Thank You to Clayton, Kathy and Harriet for all their hard work.

The board realized that adding the American Fullblood as a classification for registration fell under the Rules for Registration within the APA Bylaws.

According to the Bylaws, the APA Board “has the power to amend the rules of the Association …” and those changes “become effective immediately unless otherwise specified.” So, the American Fullblood was not voted on at the membership meeting. Rather, it was voted on in the APA Board meeting in compliance with the Bylaws. So, effective October 1, 2011 the American Fullblood will be any animal registered as 95% or more Pinzgauer. We will retain Purebred and Austrian Fullblood classifications. Any member wishing to have a currently registered animal re-registered may do so from now until September 30, 2013 for a nominal fee.

Finally, we want your DNA! Thanks to Wamsley Performance, we will be giving away a Cold Air Intake for the vehicle of your choice to one lucky member who has an animal GENESTAR tested from now until May 1, 2012. For each animal you have tested, send your results to me at gertngauers@yahoo.com and you will be entered to win. To test is easy. Simply go to the link on the web for Pfizer and request your test kit. When it arrives, be sure to mark GENESTAR on the form and send it with tail hair and $27.50 per animal in the envelope provided.

Then make sure I get your results. We need this information so that we can effectively promote the breed. Thanks in advance for your support!

Treasurer’s Report (Oct 2012)

We ended the year down almost $4000 to budget and that included a $3000 donation from the State of Maine. So, it has been necessary to take a hard look at finances for the coming year. The proposed budget included in the last journal was approved at the Oct. 1 board meeting. After discussion it was decided to increase membership dues to $75 for regular members and $10 for junior members in an effort to ease the budget deficit without cutting breed promotion funds. This increase will take effect January 1, 2012.

This budget also includes cuts to National Show funds, and the APA will discontinue the 800 number effective January 1, 2012. It is our hope that the new registration category of American Fullblood will increase revenue from registrations. Please continue to register those calves and transfer all sales in order to help your association return to solid financial ground. Thanks for your continued support.

s you all have probably heard the Central parts of Texas and some of Oklahoma are experiencing a severe drought that started last fall. Many breeders in our region have had to sell a portion of their herd or sell off Southwest their entire herd. This is a serious problem. There is no Region grass, very limited hay available, and ponds that are drying up. Soon there is going to be a lot of water wells that can’t reach the dropping levels of underground water. There is no change in site for the near future. I speak for all of our breeders to ask for any help available to get through this tough time. Any hay available that could be hauled in, or pastures with grass that could be borrowed would be greatly appreciated. Lisa Wamsley - President

Lisa is from Madisonville, Texas and is married to Ken Wamsley. They have two children, Jeremy and Derek. They operate Lazy W Farms. She has been involved in the Pinzgauer Breed since 2000. She became interested in the breed when saw them in the show ring and thought they were beautiful. Lazy W Farms normally run 40 head of mama cows of both Pinzgauer and Santa Gertrudis, but have had to cut back this year because of the drought. Lisa is beginning her second term on board. She’d like to see the board accomplish getting more numbers and information to support our Certified Pinzgauer Beef, having more nationwide Pinzgauer Beef promotion, having a centralized National Show in the summer so that all might have an opportunity to plan to attend, and to see more junior participation Please feel free to call me or email me any time, I love to talk about these cows!

Harriet Thoms - Secretary Harriet Thoms and I am currently serving as your APA secretary. I am from Maine and have been in the Pinzgauer breed since I was a junior in 1995. My husband and I own a dairy and beef farm. We own 125 acres in the western foot hills of Maine. While doing my college internship with Silver Bullet Cattle Co, I helped with the Pinzgauer Journal and wrote several articles for it. I have attended many national shows as a junior and now as an adult.

Donna Laney - Director Howard and I started raising Pinzgauers in the early 1990s. After Howard did lots and lots of research, this was the breed we decided to go with. For him it was their temperament that they are “easy keepers.”

I have been active in the Northwest Pinzgauer Association serving on the Board and as President. I have also been active at the National level serving on the Board and as President. The side benefit of this has been all of the wonderful friends we have made along the way! I guess if I had a magic wand to wave to grant one wish for the APA it would to get more people involved to be part of the “team” so we could grow as an organization and not just as individuals. I love the breed and hope to have them around for several years!

Clayton Haskell - Director Clayton Haskell and his wife, Kathy own Pleasant River Farm in Windham, Maine.

They have been raising Pinzgauers since 1995. In addition to showing cattle at fairs, they are supplying Pinzgauer beef to a local college.

Clayton is currently serving his fourth Board term. He has served as Treasurer from 20022004 and again from 2008-2010, and as President from 2003-2005. During his time on the board, he has been instrumental in having a website developed for the association and worked to obtain the Certified Pinzgauer Beef label for the association.

Clayton is a member of the Maine Farm Bureau where he is a past county president and past state director.

He has been a 4-H leader for almost 40 years.

Nancy Hankins

Nancy Hankins - Director Owner of: Nancy is the owner of Manning Acres Pinzgauer Ranch. She was born on November 2, 1941.

She has been raising cows since 1989.Manning Acres Pinzgauer Ranch She purchased her first Pinzgauer bull “Ladislove Von

Bergstadt,” from Herb & Dixie Berg in 1990. Nancy has been an active association member Born: 11/02/1941 since 1990. She currently has 34 head of both Fullblood and Purebred Pinzgauers over 88 acres. She holds both interest in the beef and commercial fishing industries as well. Nancy is a firm believer in keeping fullblood and Current address: purebred status, not rounding up percentage numbers.

Mary Ann Meredith - Director Raised on a dairy farm in Nashville, Tennessee, Mary Ann’s mother said, “Do not date a farmer, a dairy is like living in prison.” Milk in the morning and make sure you are home in time to milk in the afternoon seven days a week. In 1965, Mary Ann’s mother saw to it that she attended college away from Nashville and away from the farm life.

There at Tennessee Technological University she received a BS in Business Education and minor in Accounting. At college, she met and married Ken Meredith and together they started a 37 year Naval Career beginning in Pensacola, Florida. Twin daughters were born in Pensacola, Ronda and Susan. Ronda is presently a professor at Belmont University, Nashville and Susan is a professor at Lipscomb University, Nashville.

In 1996, Ken and Mary Ann got the phone call that Mary Ann’s father had been killed on the farm, mother was already deceased, so Ken and Mary Ann inherited land. They didn’t want land! They were gypsies, certainly not farmers. Mother always said, “Never date a farmer and never, never marry a farmer.”

Mary Ann returned to Nashville to wrap up all the family matters. In 2002, the decision was made that cows would be purchased to graze the fields. The rest is history for the Twin Springs Pinzgauers.

Renovations began on the 300 acre piece of land in Coopertown, Tennessee. Ponds were dug, fences were built, watering systems were installed, barns were built, new corral systems were installed and new grazing systems were put into effect. The Twin Springs Pinzgauer Cattle are happy cattle.

Mother is happy because Mary Ann didn’t marry a farmer. However, Mary Ann became a farmer the old fashioned way and she is still learning. Now, the three grandchildren, Timothy, Kenny and Meredith are enjoying the old farm house, which is called “The Cow Palace.”

Jerry De Smidt - Director I was born in 1969 and my parents were dairy farmers on my grandparents’ farm, we lived very close to several aunts and uncles that were also farmers. When I was younger we moved off the farm to a small community in east central Wisconsin. Growing up I have always had small animals like a dog, a cat , rabbits and chickens, I loved to be around the animals. I started working on a dairy farm when I was 12 and have always loved to be with the cattle.

I graduated high school and went to collage at the University of Wisconsin River Falls and stared out in pre-veterinary medicine. I took a few horticulture classes and changed my Major and now have a B.S. degree in Horticulture. I have worked for several landscape companies in Wisconsin and am currently working for Green Bay Nursery, in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

While in school I had purchased some Registered Polled Hereford cattle and raised them for many years. Jake and I moved to our present location in the spring of 2000, bringing the Herefords with us. We went to the national show in Milwaukee in 2003 and admired the Pinzgauer cattle and were talking that if we ever switched breeds that we would try Pinizgauers. In the fall of 2005 we purchased our first Pinzgauers from Longshot Cattle Company. We were hooked. We have had cattle at several national shows. We have and try to maintain around 20 head of cattle and raise several breeds of poultry.

Pam Shay-Bryant - Director Pam Shay-Bryant and her husband, Dennis Bryant, founded Silver Bullet Cattle Co. in Cedar Hill, Tennessee in 2000. Prior to that she owned and raised Pinzgauers in Florida and was the publisher/editor of the Pinzgauer Journal from 1995 to 2008.

She bought her first Pinzgauers in 1987 from Walter Bates at Sugar Hill Farms. Around the same time, she became active in the Southeastern Pinzgauer Association and currently serves as its Treasurer.

Throughout her years working with The Pinzgauer Journal, and showing cattle in many states, she met Pinzgauer breeders all over the country and made many friends. Pam is a firm believer in the quality of the beef the cattle produce and the great maternal instincts of the breed. When she is not on the farm, Pam is a Director of Accounting for a large, international Construction Management Company.

Absent – Donna Laney, Nancy Hankins Meeting called to order at 9:00 EST Secretary’s report: Pam, Todd Treasurer Report – Last three years we have had a loss.

Had we not received a donation from the state of Maine we would have had a bigger loss. The budget had not been approved for the 2011-2012, if passed the way it stands right now we will continue to operate at a loss, suggestions for making more money would be raising the dues to 75 for adults and 10 for juniors, and keep all other fees the same, currently we have 112 adult members and 40 juniors. Made cuts to the national show from 1,600 to 1,000. Raise the cost of the bells to 1,250, save money by cancelling the 1-800 number that would save us 300 a year.

Motion made by Todd to accept the proposed budget July 1 2011 -2012, seconded by Pam Motion made by Clayton to raise the junior dues to 10 and the adult to 75 to help balance the budget and gain some working capital, a post card to be sent to all membership informing them of the change. Motion made by Clayton to end the use of the 1-800 number for the APA office, a date set of Jan 1, 2012 that the number will no longer be active, seconded by Pam, all approved.

Breed Field Rep – have not received many inquiries about the breed. In 2013 all countries will be in South Africa for the congress. They are looking for each country to donate one heifer for the congress; they would pay all expenses to get the heifer to South Africa. They would put on a show at the congress then they would have a sale of the animals. They are looking for four heifers from the US. Youth Scholarship - Four applicants applied for the scholarship, Todd, Jerry and Kathy to choose two applicants to receive $1,000.

Three of the applicants were very good one was not an APA member. It was decided that the persons chosen from a region would have a picture of receiving the scholarship, to make a big deal about receiving it.

- Not many youth are involved in the breed right now. It was noted that many of the Jr Pinzgauer shows have 12 The Pinzgauer Journal - December 2011

been canceled from shows from lack of participation. This year there will be 10 juniors showing at the National Editorial Board - Cathy has not been receiving any thing on this; this was a misunderstanding between EDJE and Kathy. Nicole was not aware that she was to send the stories to Kathy to look over before the journal went to print. Some of the pictures in the last journal from WI shows were wrong; they will be corrected in the next journal Finance – Grievance – no report Import/Export – no report National Show – - Sixty total head entered 10 juniors, 13 breeders, and a silent auction to be held at the banquet with the extra proceeds to go into the scholarship fund. Fryeburg Fair is very happy the cattle and how everything came together, everyone was very happy with the fair facilities.

Performance – no data being reported, three market steers to be shown at the national show. Gen-Star tests your bulls to help get information out there. All other breeds doing this it cost $27 per animal, Lisa Wamsley’ sons are offering a prize for entering into a contest. Every animal that has been tested will be entered into a hat to win a cold air intake for a diesel motor.

Rules – rules for registration can be changed by the board of directors only; Pam said she would update the member hand book. Bylaws are to be changed by the membership 90 days before. If a request for change it must be presented to the president 60 days before a scheduled meeting. Any member in good standing can be nominated for the board.

Open & Junior show rules – standards for color, solid face, with a white tail. Red is pure keep it pure. Offer a steer class for the juniors at the national show, regions to determine if a steer class can be added, also to auction the champion and reserve to be sold at nationals.

Web site – hit F5 to have the most accurate update come up. If you want to see something on the web site send it to Nicole. It was decided that the last 10 years of National Champion pictures to be added to the web site Promotion – what does this committee actually do? Is it a regional or national? Have a calendar for the breed to help generate more income. If you want to place and ad in a magazine we would like to advertise on a national level not just a regional level.

American Fullblood – According to our rules and bylaws a rule change can be done by only the board of directors. The board can vote and approve a new rule. Must be 95% Pinzgauer, registration paper will state American Fullblood on it, no breed standard, will not be allowed to show at a national show.

Increase participation, have a member contest on who can get the most new members. one year free membership, send a letter stating that your free year is up and the member rates are.

All members must help the breed not just the board.

- The board was very insulted by an email received that the board acts in an illegal manner, we would like a letter of apology from you and if you are not happy turn in your membership.

A packet of information on Pinzgauers to be sent to all new members and to be able to hand out to the public with questions. We need to add universities to our mailing list of the journal and give them the link to view it online. If you want extra journals you must pay for them. Each journal to have a bit of history on the breed in it, Kim said she would do this.

Invite a local FFA or 4-H group to your farm to help generate more interest in the breed and help educate kids.

Hall of Fame award – to be presented at the membership meeting.

New Committees – the members need to help out in any way that they wish, if you see a problem don’t just talk about it help us fix it.

New Board Members - Only three nominations for Board members were on the voting ballot, but we have four open spots on the ballot. The new board members are: Bob Kessler and Diana Beckwith and Lisa Wamsley was re-elected for another term.

American Pinzgauer Association National Show Membership Meeting

Called order at 8:40 EST Opened with a thank you and happy birthday to Clayton Haskell Secretary’s report was posted in the “Journal.”

Treasurer’s report proposed budget passed and an increase in membership dues to $75 for adults and $10 for juniors, we have operated at a loss for many years this is to help offset that. We needed to make a few changes to help the books of the APA. We were currently the lowest membership dues for all the breeds. Dennis made a motion to approve, Clayton to second.

Scholarship – started last year, this year we had four applicants, we will be awarding scholarship to two applicants, it will be published in the next “Journal.”

National Show – thanks for coming, great bunch of cattle. Most cattle numbers in a while, 60 Head and 10 juniors, thanked help from John & Debbie Ludden and Sue Paradise.

Performance - would like to have some new updated data out there. Gen-Star test for bulls cost $27, contest for all who test and animal chance to win a cold air intake for a diesel motor. The drawing will take place May 1.

Rules & Bylaws – board to add American Fullblood, Todd said this will help generate more revenue has to be 95% or higher to be considered, can transfer any animal for two years from today for $10. The board of directors can change a rule; however they cannot change a bylaw without a vote from membership. Donna said we should vote as a whole on this, not just the board. The board of directors cannot make everyone happy.

Congress – 53 people from six different countries, very impressed with cattle visited many dairies and the OR state fair. Congress to be held in South Africa in 2013, they are really looking forward to hosting Hall of Fame Award – very few nominationsDr. Dan Scott, he has been in the breed since 1976.

Committees want your help in any place you are willing to help, would like the membership as a whole to be more active in the breed.

ello everyone, I hope everyone had a good time at the World Beef Expo this year. Congratulations to all of you. We had thirty five head of cattle at the World Beef Expo including the cattle Craig and Cheyenne Hooks brought from Tennessee. The open show was Friday, September 23rd.

On Saturday, September 24th we held our junior meeting. During the meeting we discussed the 2012 nationals.

We all came up with some neat ideas for new prizes for the national junior show. Also during the meeting we talked about more fundraising opportunities. Saturday night was the supreme drive. Congratulations to Jerry (Woodhaven Farm) with the cow/calf pair, the heifer, and the bull that went in to represent our breed. During the supreme drive we also had our Midwest Royalty representing our breed. Thank you to Gloria Kesler, Queen; Brook Calaway, Princess; and Stephanie Page, Princess for being there to represent the breed.

Sunday September 25th, some of the juniors participated in Youth Sweepstakes Showmanship. Those juniors were: Mark Leis, Lauryn Hacker, Samantha Kerian, Brooke Calaway, and Brady Calaway. Also on Sunday we had the junior

show. We had a lot of the juniors participate in the junior show whether they had their own cattle or they just helped other juniors show. The juniors that participated were: Samantha Kerian, Mark Leis, Lauryn Hacker, Krista Erickson, Jill Foshee, Brooke Calaway, Brady Calaway, Elizabeth Calaway, Sarah Calaway, Pearl Franke, and Cheyenne Hooks. Amanda Becker was unable to attend in Sunday; however, she participated in the open show on Friday. Gloria Kesler also participated in the youth sweepstakes on Friday.

It was wonderful to have Cheyenne Hooks and her father Craig Hooks participate at World Beef Expo this year.

I would like to thank everyone that participated at World Beef Expo this year. These are the people who work together to make our shows a success.

ylee Johanson’s Pinzgauer cross steer “Johnny” was named champion at the 2011 Southwest Washington Fair in Chehalis, WA. Johnny was the third lightest of the 18 steers in the competition at 1,148 lbs but he had third largest loin eye at 13.5".

Johnny was Kylee’s sixth market steer at her county fair and her second champion, she has also shown a reserve champion steer. All of Kylee’s steers have been Pinzgauer or Pinzgauer cross. Kylee says “At our county fair the steers are ultra-sounded for loin eye size, marbling and back fat. I know the Pinzgauer will give me a big loin eye and the crossbreeding helps with the marbling score that it takes to win at this fair. I really like showing the Pinzgauer steers because they are different and they have always been very easy to work with.”

Choosing Your Next Pinzgauer By: Ken Paul

This article is being written based my view as to what to look for when purchasing quality Pinzgauer cows and bulls. Whether you are looking for commercial Pinzgauer cattle or high quality breeding Pinzgauers for a registered herd, there are traits that you should be looking for in your cattle purchase. There may be some traits that I feel are important that someone else may disagree with, which is fine. The reason for this article is to give suggestions to help buyers of breeding stock choose animals that will improve the breed. The old saying “you get what you pay for” goes for cattle also.

Generally, you should be looking for a female of moderate frame size with a balance of femininity and muscle and a bull of moderate size with a sound structure and expressive muscle.

Health is a great concern due to the effect it has on productivity of the animal. First, make an overall inspection looking for signs of illness, injuries, stress, or parasite overload.

Second, ask your Veterinarian what protocols they recommend for your area and talk to the seller about what vaccinations and worming the animal has had and when.

Body condition is another concern. You should learn the body condition scoring system (a numerical scoring system that ranges from 1 thru 9, 1 being severely under weight and 9 being severely over weight). You should be looking for a 5 or 6 and possibly a 7, with the best conditioning overall, and understand that malnourished and overly conditioned animals could have health and breeding problems; costing you money and time.

Bloodlines are important for breeding stock. If you are not strong in knowledge of the breed’s bloodlines, then call experienced breeders and get their input on what they know.

The only way you will learn is to ask questions.

You should get in a habit of judging every cow you see looking for its good traits and faults so that it becomes second nature for you. New buyers should take the time to visit breeders and get to know the breed. You will find that most breeders are more than happy to help you.

I am not a professional judge, so I will use simple terms to describe the traits of good cattle. These guidelines are based on young cows and bulls that have reached at least 3 or 4 years of age. Older cattle have to be looked at with the age taken in consideration. Hopefully the following notes will give you some guidelines for better choices.

Let’s start with the most important part of your herd, the cow.

She has to last many years and give you a calf every year, pass on good genetics to her calf, protect it, and raise it to a good start in life, in other words have good maternal instincts. The traits I look for in a cow are: 1. Volume, she needs a good spring in the ribs, depth and 18 The Pinzgauer Journal - December 2011

length of the body and a low flank.

2. Top line, look for width at the shoulder, not too narrow or pinched behind the shoulders, a straight spine, not swayed downward or roached (arched up), and a flat top with the ribs extending outward.

3. Shoulders, a good amount of width apart is important, and a smooth transition at the lower front part of the shoulder without a sharp protrusion.

4. Chest, look for a fairly wide chest without an overlarge extension of the brisket and a good smooth transition through the neck.

5. Neck and head, I especially want to see a long neck with as little amount of dewlap as possible, no crown in the neck, and a small feminine head.

6. Hips, just wider than the shoulders with good muscle expression, somewhat square at the top, not a drastic drop from the pelvic bone.

7. Tail head should be low in relation to the hips and spine.

8. Bone and feet, the legs should be fairly large with a strong stance, straight joints. The front legs need to be straight with a good amount of space between them. The rear legs should have enough set to them, not post legged (too straight), you are looking for flex in the hock area, the feet should be wide and sit even on the ground, watch for corkscrew hooves (where the outside of the hoof grows around and under the foot) this will be a lifetime problem. Watch the cow as it walks to be sure it moves with ease and tracks straight with a long stride.

9. Udder should be square, even sized, a slight lift at the front attachment to belly, four good quarters, small evenly formed nipples. Stay away from large nipples and irregular sized nipples.

Udder problems are genetic and you are looking at future problems from offspring.

10. Navel should be as small as possible, preferably smooth with the belly.

Now let’s look at the traits of a good bull, the second most important part of your herd. One thing is for sure, you should not make your decision to purchase a breeding bull because of low cost. Your bull is the one animal with the most genetic input to your herd, so make your choices carefully. The traits of the cow are going to be the same for the bull with some exceptions: 1. Volume, he should have a good spring in the ribs, depth and length of the body and a low flank, same as the cow.

2. Top line, look for width at the shoulder, not too narrow or pinched behind the shoulders, a straight spine, not swayed downward or roached (arched up), and a flat top with the ribs extending outward, look for strength and a good wide top.

10. Sheath and navel, should be as small as possible,

preferably short as possible. Stay away from a long sloppy sheath to cut down on breeding problems.

Now to talk about young calves, which are a little more difficult to judge than grown cattle are, but the good traits should still be there.

1. A heifer should have a full body and should be deep and fairly wide. She should stand square with straight feet, have good extension of a clean neck with a feminine head.

2. A bull calf should be stout made with a broad chest, wide top, and definite muscle expression. Depending on his age, he should show good testicle development and have a clean sheath.

This article may sound like you would be looking for the perfect cow, which would be hard to find. You will have to accept a degree of some faults and be able to breed for improvements.

Hopefully this information will give some helpful input on the important traits you should be looking for in quality females and bulls. Remember that quality traits and good genetics in your cattle purchases will have a long lasting impact on your herd and your return.

Pinzgauer Bull And Cow Selection By: Duane Mickelsen, DVM

We have been asked by a breeder to describe traits to look for in selection of good Pinzgauer bulls, cows and calves based on conformation and some other traits. The breeder, and I am sure many breeders, is looking for an experienced opinion on what they should be looking for, especially when buying calves for their breeding herd. So I asked several breeders what they looked for in selecting their herd sires and out of a dozen four got back to me so between their ideas, I also used an old APA member handbook to find the standard breed characteristics recommended in the 1990’s.

In addition, Ken Paul has written an excellent article on “Choosing Your Next Pinzgauer” which also appears in this issue which really has some good tips and ideas for what to look for in selecting good Pinzgauer cattle.

Actually I don’t think many things have changed over the years from what the original cattle were like, except that they are not quit as big and are a lot smoother.

Most breeders look for a masculine bull with a wide muzzle, wide and open nostrils with good width between the eyes. The bull should be medium in length, with a moderate crest and dewlap development. Mike Foshee (WI) likes a moderate to heavy dewlap in conjunction with a well muscled bull with wide chest, long back with natural thickness down the top, and a straight medium to heavy boned leg. He also likes a black hoof, no matter if the animal is red or black. Darryl Polzin (MN) also looks for bulls with full and wide chest, with a wide heart girth and with ample capacity. Several breeders like the bull and female to have ribs well sprung from backbone well arched with good length to give good depth of body and capacity (fig.1) .

Lance Fletcher (WY) says the bull should have a masculine front and a sound pair of testicles behind. The bull must be able to travel freely and long distance, both to feed and also breed This

means that skeletal defects – particularly in the legs, feet and joints – can shorten the productive life of any bull or cow. Lance uses performance testing a lot to check for important growth factors that will affect the cattle the bull produces and gives the breeder expected progeny differences (EPD) before he ever sires any calves. This is important because your herd sire provides half the genetics for any calves you sell or keep as future cows, so if you find a good one be willing to pay more dollars for him.

on the left having to small of testicles, the bull in the middle shows excellent size for a two-year old, or older bull, and the bull on the right is excellent for a yearling bulls scrotum. Ideally yearling bulls should have 34 centimeters, or greater scrotal

circumference, and semen with 30+% progressive motility, 70% or greater normal morphology, in a semen sample.

Pinzgauer bulls have larger testicles than many other breeds and that is good because research shows that their heifer offspring will reach puberty at an earlier age as a result.

A very important factor that most breeders have noted over the years is we can’t overemphasize birth weight of the calves the bull sires. This is especially important in firstcalf heifers. Lance Fletcher says birth weight is the most important trait that a breeder should look for in selecting a herd sire, especially those used on heifers. Darryl Polzin believes that you should measure the pelvic size of your bulls since pelvic size has a 60% genetic correlation between male and female pelvic area (fig. 4). Yearling bulls weighing 900-1100 pounds should have 150-170 centimeter squared pelvic area, which is similar to yearling heifers weighing 700 to 800 pounds.

A smooth, and smaller head, and more refined body is necessary in bulls used on Pinzgauer heifers and they should have a birth weight of not more than 80 pounds when they were born. Occasionally a larger birth weight bull may be alright to use on first-calf heifers but not very often.

Mr. Fletcher, with 40 years of breeding experience, prefers polled bulls because most of them tend to be more refined and smoother than a lot of horned bulls. Another factor about Pinzgauers is that most have good temperaments and that is very important when selecting sires. Pinzgauers also are resistant to foot rot because of their dark hooves, resistant to pink eye because of the dark pigment and also reasonably immune to High Mountain Disease, or Pulmonary Emphysema, which kills a lot of cattle pastured above 5000 feet elevation. These should be good selling features which should be advertised when marketing our breed.

The ideal female should reflect what the commercial cattle producer may want. Often this is a cow that is of average size, 1250-1500 pounds, has good bone and muscle, sound feet and legs, and able to cover a lot of ground, with minimal effort, while foraging. She should have good udder placement with average size teats and able to produce a calf that weighs 50 to 60% of the dam’s weight (fig. 5) by 210

days of age.

Figure 5 Females should show feminity at all stages of development. Feminine females should be sharp, clean fronted and feminine headed and lady like. Thin, lean necks and long, smooth muscling, according to Ken Paul (TX) and also good udder development which indicates good fertility and milking ability in young females. Avoid heifers out of dams with low milk production says Mike Foshee (WI) and he likes to cross Pinzgauers on his Holsteins. He also likes females with good muscle, long deep body with a straight hind leg.

It is always good to refer to breeding, calving and performance records to evaluate reproductive efficiency when picking out your heifers and bulls. This is why a lot of purebred breeders utilize artificial insemination in their herds to enable better breeding stock selection.

Weaning weight is the most important trait affecting net income in a cow-calf operation and weaning weights of beef calves are influenced more by the dam’s milk production than any other single factor. Performance testing programs that emphasize weaning weights automatically result in selection for higher milk production . Figure 6 shows a beautiful 8 year-old Pinzgauer female with a perfect udder and a calf at side every year. Milk yield in beef cows is about 30% heritable. You can improve the milking ability of a beef herd by giving proper attention to milk production when selecting a herd bull. Selecting individuals with superior weaning weights indirectly selects for higher milk production.

All the breeders emphasized that the bull is not the only problem when it comes to calving and that much emphasis should be placed on picking females with good depth of body, rump long, naturally thick and deep, with good depth between the hips and pin bones (fig. 6). Measuring the pelvic diameter is always a good pre-breeding tool to use as some structural features will fool you when it comes to knowing the internal pelvic diameter.

Replacement heifers, or bulls, should not be allowed to become too fat because it lowers reproductive efficiency.

The fat buildup decreases semen production and libido in bulls, and decreases milk production and fertility in heifers.

They should both be fed moderately and not under feedlot conditions, but never the less fed well during the first year according to Mr. Polzin. He also advises that cattle all be vaccinated, de-wormed and have access to free choice minerals. Several breeders say that calves should have access to creep feed because they will be easier to wean and weaned earlier (4-5 months). Mr. Polzin also suggests limiting the number of cattle you have because they will be easier to manage and take care of which will pay you back in dividends.

I hope this helps to enable you to select your breeding animals. Sad to say a lot will be learned by hard knocks over time and error. Many of us have had to learn by experimenting but I must say there are a number of books and Animal Science courses that are valuable in selection of breeding stock, if they are available to you.
