As a rancher I was always told that crossbreeding has many advantages, but while it may be a good thing to cross cattle, it’s not usually a good idea to crossbreed auctioneers. Heavy metal auctioneers who sell Caterpillars and cranes aren’t the best at selling world class art, and if you want to sell some feeder pigs the auctioneers at Sotheby’s and Christie’s aren’t necessarily the first people you’d think of to call.

The one exception to my crossbred auctioneer rule are livestock auctioneers; they can sell anything. They are like crossover music artists who can sing both pop and country. Their voices are ambidextrous. They can sell everything from farm equipment, land, art, charity events, real estate and cars.

And can they ever motor!

There is one area, however, where livestock auctioneers haven’t been employed and that’s wine auctions. A friend of mine manages a wine auction and has always been reluctant to hire my cowboy friends to sell it. Then one year she came to me because their wine auction was dying on the vine, so to speak. I told her it was because the “chant” of the person who sold it consisted of repeating a number over and over again very slowly until everyone was numb. “Put that person on the block at a weekly livestock auction and he’d be laughed out of the place,” I said. “Anyone who can’t say, ‘Around and round the rough and rugged rocks the ragged rascal ran,’ real fast at least three times in a row real fast doesn’t deserve to call themselves an auctioneer.”

“Do you really think your cowboy friends can sell wine?” she desperately asked.

“Of course, they can. I know your concerns have always been that cowboys don’t know that much about wine, but product knowledge can be overrated,” I said. “I’ll just tutor my auctioneer friend and I’ll bring along a couple of my buddies to take bids.”

My buddy needed more tutoring than I thought. He thinks “tannin” is what you do to leather, or on the beach, and he wouldn’t know the difference between a Cabernet and a cabbage worm. I made up flash cards with difficult wine words to say, such as pee-no, mur-low, Gall-lo and wine-o, and told him the right way to say “caumeur” is “cow manure”. I also told him, “In describing a wine just pick out a person you know and describe that person. For example, a wine might be ‘pretentious yet mellow’, or ‘deep and bold.’ Kind of like me.”

We showed up for the auction in cowboy hats and boots and brought the house down. One bottle brought more than the mortgage on my first house. If I drank the wine we sold, at the prices we did, I wouldn’t use the restroom for a year. It would be like pouring money away and flushing it down the toilet. They didn’t even mind that the auctioneer took my advice and described one wine as “arrogant and dense,” and another had “a long nose, could stink on occasion, and was nuttier than an Almond Joy.” (I only hope he wasn’t describing me.)

We ended up doubling the previous year’s gross and they gave each of us a bottle of wine as a tip to show their appreciation. I put the bottle in my wine cellar, which now consisted of one bottle of wine, and when some people we don’t like invited us to a housewarming party I went to my cellar, retrieved the free bottle of booze and gave it as a gift. It was akin to “regifting” presents at Christmas.

From then on the folks we gave the bottle to acted like our new best friends, inviting us to family weddings, funerals and graduations. Even though they’d hardly spoken to us before, they now wanted us to be their Facebook friends. I was wondering why the change of heart when one day the “friends” blurted out that it’s not every day someone gives you a $500 bottle of wine as a housewarming gift!

I tried not to scream, or change facial expressions, but my wife said the only other time she’d seen that look on my face was when a tour guide informed us that we’d just eaten fried monkey organs.

“dry” this summer. We have actually been cutting hay in Texas and have already baled more than we did the last two years combined. That is a blessing! Anyway, the Association is moving forward and trying to excite its’ membership. We’ve been talking to you for almost a year now about the importance of MVP Genestar testing your herd sire. To date, four breeders have listened. How can we compete against the Angus and Herefords when we can’t put the data together to compare with? How can we promote the breed when the numbers we have are from the early 1980s? How can we talk “Two-Star, Four-Star” when everyone else is talking “Palatability Index and Feed Efficiency?” Y’all, we’ve got to get with it. All it takes is tail hair and $27.50. Come on, you can do it. If you need help understanding what to do….call or email me. This year at the National Show we will be celebrating 35 Years of Champions by selling a t-shirt that lists all previous National Champion Bulls and Females. It is an awesome shirt. The pictures of the shirt and the order form are on the web. Finally, it is way past time that we as breeders make an attempt to clean up our herd registry. Our registry has over 4,500 active registrations and 160 active members.

Does that sound a little off to you? Please take a little time to look over your herd and let Karen know what animals you still have. The National Show, meetings, banquet and silent auction is fast approaching. Auction items are on the web as well. Paul Swisher, Circle Red S, has donated the first three 1975 Pinzgauer Prophets, and the whole year of 1976 to be auctioned to benefit the scholarship fund. You don’t have to be in attendance to bid. I

t appears like the state of the economy is still taking a hit on the APA finances. Registrations are down again (down 18.1% from 2011) with a slight increase in transfers for the quarter, but down 17.8% for the year. We are at a net loss for the year for operations of $7,974.30.

Cash flow remains adequate, so we need to be hopeful that the new fiscal year will prove to be profitable.

he Midwest is remaining positive in the mist of the drought of 2012.

The Juniors had a very successful Jr. Show in Seymour, Wisconsin complete with a picnic at Woodhaven, Pulaski, Midwest Wisconsin.

The Pinzgauer cattle are always a hit at Wisconsin’s Region Farm Technology days. It was double the fun this year as Kesler Family Farm had their twins, “Blake & Miranda” on display.

The Midwest is looking forward to seeing everyone at the National Show In September. We have been working hard on awards, shirts/hats, banquet/hotel accommodations and a stellar silent auction.

The Junior Gazette

Many Pinzgauers were shown at the Valley Beef Show at Seymour, Wisconsin June 2nd. Everyone worked together to get their cattle ready and into the show ring.

I would like to thank Jerry and Jake at Woodhaven Farm for having us for supper after the show on Saturday. It is always fun and interesting to see all the poultry and animals there.

Thanks you Jake and Jerry, from everyone that attended.

The Midwest Junior Pinzgauer Show was held at Seymour, Wisconsin on June 3rd. The juniors had an eventful day as we had a large number of animals in the ring throughout the day. The new royalty was busy handing out trophies and ribbons, when they weren’t showing their cattle. The new Midwest Royalty are as follows: Queen- Brooke Calaway, Princess - Stephanie Page, Princess - Pearl Franke, Princess - Jill Foshee. The judge was very informative and we learned a lot. After our show we received a call from the editor of the Wisconsin Show Magazine and they wanted the results and pictures from our junior show. The judge was impressed with the number and quality of our animals and contacted them. We were all excited to have our Pinzgauers recognized in this way.

On June 23rd, some of the Midwest Juniors showed at the Elroy Junior Fair. This year, Nick Curtin, Pearl Franke, Sam Kerian, and Stephanie Page brought cattle to show. We are a

bunch of kids that like to show and get together at Twin Brooks farm and work cattle every Sunday with some of the parents.

We have shown at this fair for three years and next year we will have our own class. The judge loved the Pinzgauers and placed us over many more popular breeds.

Farm Technology Days 2012 was held in Outagomie County. Although the days were hot, the crowds came anyway.

One day Orion Samuelson spoke at the cattlemen’s tent. Thank you to the Kesler family for bringing the beautiful cow with twin calves. Our Pinzgauer queen, Brooke Calaway, and other juniors were there to answer questions and talk about our cattle.

We are looking forward to the Midwest district show at the Wisconsin State Fair and the National Show at World Beef Expo. Put your boots on and we’ll see you there.

Q1. I used several doses from my vaccine 8-way clostridium (Blackleg, etc.) and the label says to throw away any remaining vaccine after use, but I still have several doses left?

A. If it is a killed bacterin such as this or a killed viral vaccine I would keep it and use it again as long as you do not contaminate the bottle. You may use it until the vaccine is gone or past the expiration date. Modified live vaccines, however, only last for a few hours and any remaining vaccine should be discarded if it is not all used up that day.

Q2. What is the best way to dehorn my calves?

A. You can put caustic paste on the horn button within the first few days following birth. Clip the area and apply a little petroleum jelly (Vaseline) around the horn base, then put the caustic paste on the horn and keep the calf away from the cow for a few hours. When the calf is a little older, you can use a Barnes dehorner to clip the horn pff (they make two sizes- small and large) and then use a dehorning iron to burn the remaining tissue until it looks like leather around the horn. This will stop the bleeding. When they are much older and horn is very large, they can be sawed off with either a saw (following a local nerve block) or by using an obstetrical wire and fetotomy handles.

This works pretty well and there is not much bleeding. If you cannot find the large artery which is spurting and pull it with a pair of forceps, then you can take a piece of bailing twine and tie it around under the base of the horns and behind the head and leave it in place until the next day and that will usually stop the bleeding.

Q3. Why have several of my cows not got rid of their afterbirth following calving?

A. This is usually due to several things among which the most important is 1) a lack of free-choice minerals such as Vitamin A and E, calcium, phosphorus and selenium; 2) a twin birth or a cesarean section both will lead to problems of retained placenta.

Q4. Does the finding of a bloody discharge on the cows, or heifers, rear (fig. 1) shortly after breeding indicate that the breeding did not take .

A. No, 50% of all cows and 75% of heifers will have a post-estrus discharge, which is normal and is due to estrogen withdrawal. It has nothing to do with conception, however, if in another 20-22 days you see it on the back of the animal, without a mating,

then it indicates that the heat was missed and the cow is probably not pregnant at that time.

Q5. I have a heifer that has been champion at every show but she is now a two-year old and has been bred several times, both

by AI and naturally by a bull, and is still not pregnant. What do you suggest that we can do with her?

A. First, I would palpate her because I had a heifer (Polled Hereford) presented to me that had this type of history and I found the uterus to be normal and a CL3 on one ovary. I asked the breeder if she had been mated recently and they said yes “23 days ago�. I waited for 10 days and found her to be pregnant. Another case (Shorthorn) was thought not to be pregnant and they stopped by because another vet wanted to give the cow a shot of prostaglandin but they decided to get another opinion. She was 6 months pregnant and prostaglandin may have caused her to abort. But in this case, a Pinzgauer heifer, I was not near her so here is what I suggested. Many show heifers are fed for show and become too fat to breed. Since she had been mated several times and still coming into heat I suggested they decrease her body condition from an 8 to a 6 by grazing on poor quality feed for awhile. Then start feeding her better for a few days to get a flushing effect. If the breeding has been by several bulls I would suggest AI and if all AI then use a bull that has been certified a sound breeder. If she comes in heat again then AI her with known good semen and 24 hours later I would infuse her uterus with 10cc of potassium penicillin in 25cc distilled water in case there is a mild uterine infection. If this doesn’t work then give her GnRH (Cysterelin or Factoryl) when she comes into estrus in case she is not ovulating properly and AI 8-12 continued on next page

hours later If both fail then I would have her superovulated and the embryos flushed about 6-8 days later. IF no embryos are found, then her oviducts may be blocked and she should be culled. If there are unfertilized ova (fig. 2) in the flush then it suggests that the uterine environment is not good and the prognosis is poor. On the other hand maybe you will get lucky and get good embryos (fig, 3) so if you have a few recipient cows ready you could put the embryos in them and get some pregnancies and maybe put one back in her at the same time.

Q6. We have low pregnancy rates here in the south. Do you think the heat could be a problem?

A. Yes, heat and humidity can decrease conception rates dramatically in the Southern U.S., however, don’t forget parasites can also cause a dramatic decrease under these same conditions, especially where you may have flukes and many internal parasites. In a study at LSU a few years ago they found that in young cattle the GI nematodes had the most profound effect. These heifers were on grass pasture, supplemented by corn concentrate so they would gain one pound per day.

The de-wormed cattle gained better than those that were not wormed and conception rates were higher in those heifers that were treated both with Ivermectin (to kill GI nematodes) and Curatrem (containing clorsulon) which kills liver flukes.

Q7. We have to many calves that weigh over 100 pounds at birth. What can we do to prevent this from occurring?

A. There are a few Pinzgauer bulls that sire lighter birth weights so find out which ones they are and breed your heifers accordingly. Also you should wait to breed the heifers when they are a little older and weigh about 70% of their adult body weight before breeding. Also the feed you are using can cause a problem. Alfalfa hay with high protein quality, over 16 percent, may increase the birth weight. I like to feed grass and oat hay to my heifers to try and keep the birth weight down whenever possible.

Q8. What do you think about the use of ultrasound for diagnosis of pregnancy?

A. It definitely has a place especially if the palpator is not confident with early pregnancy diagnosis by palpation. In this case the use of ultrasound may be more accurate. It is also excellent for diagnosing the sex of the fetus between days 55 and 75; for the diagnosis of cystic ovaries; twin fetuses; early embryonic death and uterine pathology such as pyometra.

Q9. I have had two heifers that had no milk when they calved. What is the problem and is there anything that I can do?

A. Most of the time the lack of milk is genetic, as are too large of teats, and there is nothing that can be done except to cull the animals. However, if it is just poor milk volume then you might try feeding oats as they sometimes stimulate lactation if it is not genetic and you might also try a shot of oxytocin or bovine somatotrophin (BST) for a few days to see if it will stimulate the milk to come in. Also encourage nursing and supplement the calf in the meantime.

Q10. I have heard that it is not safe to ship cows that have recently been bred. Is that true?

A. That is true. According to research, shipping cows between 5 and 42 days following breeding can be detrimental to embryo survival and cause around a 10% decrease in pregnancy rates. Research has also shown that shipping cattle 45 to 60 days after breeding may increase embryonic mortality.

I would be careful about shipping cows that are close to calving also (within a month) as this causes a release of cortisone from the adrenal glands because of excitement and may induce early parturition. Therefore, the best time to ship pregnant cattle is when they are between 2 and 7 months of pregnancy.

All the kids didnt show an animal of their own, but they did help other's show and get them ready with minimal adult help. The juniors do their own work on their animals and help each other. If it wouldn't have been for the Junior members helping each other we wouldn't have had such a smooth show - so a huge thank you to all junior members!
