One hundred and fifty years ago it was common for country folks to charge all purchases for an entire year before paying off the bill. The proprietor of the store back then was so shocked and elated to get paid that he gave each member of the family a gift as a way of celebrating. The children got a piece of stick candy, the man of the house got a cigar or a drink poured from a bottle stored under the counter for just such celebrations, and the woman got a roll of ribbon and perhaps a few sewing needles. Please note that in the case of the children and the man such gifts were purely for enjoyment, whereas the woman’s gift was, as always, utilitarian.

Gifts such as these were known as “pelons” and retailers are still giving such gifts, only today they are known as points. “Join our Craftsman Club,” Sears says, and get points along with your credit card blisters. Fly United and get miles, or engage in a wild burst of consumerism at Ace Hardware and you’ll get double points. Oh boy, gotta get those double points.

The problem is I don’t quite know exactly what the points are good for.

I think most men, when they buy a socket set from Sears, would rather get a drink poured from a bottle under the counter than they would a thousand points, but the points don’t cost Sears anything and every Sears store doesn’t have to stock a full bar.

I think the airlines started all these pointless business reward programs. I amassed hundreds of thousands of airline miles over the years which I could have used to fly around the world several times but who wants to fly these days if you don’t have to? Besides, when you call up the airlines to redeem your miles for a trip everything is blocked out except for flying at three in the morning to Cleveland or Detroit. And since you are redeeming miles you are a third class passenger and have to fly with the luggage.

So, I donated some of my miles and got magazine subscriptions with the rest, as my points were due to expire. Oh no, you can’t let your points expire unused! So I got 21 subscriptions to magazines like Golf Digest and Cooking, even though I don’t golf or cook. I was having to stay awake nights reading just to get through all the magazines I got every month and it was killing me. I was so elated when my year’s subscriptions were over.

All these business reward programs are designed to drum up business and get a profile on you so they can sell you more stuff so you can acquire more points. To become eligible for points you have to give the retailer all sorts of private information, including your e-mail address so they can bombard you with more ways to get points. The hardware store where I shop seems to use these special point events at times when the money might be running a little thin. Of course, cash flow is an age old problem but can you imagine how bad it must have been back in the day when people only paid their bills once a year like my mother did?

Years ago I read a story in Persimmon Hill, the great magazine published by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, about how one retailer tried to improve cash flow problems that could easily be used today instead of the point programs dreamed up by retailers. It seems that at the end of one year the famous Miles City Saddlery counted up all the saddles they made and all the money they got paid and they were short payment for one saddle. In the course of doing business someone had failed to write down the sale and no employee could remember who bought it. So the owners decided to bill 25 of their best customers for one saddle, thinking that 24 of them would ignore the invoice and the one who bought the saddle would meekly pay for it.

It didn’t quite go according to plan. Nine angry customers protested the charge and the other 16 customers paid the bill with no questions asked.

I wonder if they all got double points?

The National Show committee has sent out letters seeking donations to help sponsor the show. The APA board cut funding for the show in hopes of using more money for promotion. You can help this show be the best it can be by making a monetary donation or by donating items for the silent auction. We need you to help us make this event a success.

Q1. We have had several Pinzgauer calves born without assistance but they refuse to nurse their mothers and they are not all first-calf heifers. Some even refuse to suckle a bottle. We have been told that it may be hereditary. What do you think?

A. I have not seen calves that were born without assistance refuse to nurse everything; however, I have seen some dummy calves that were hard pulls do this. My suggestion to the breeder was to check some of the cows for bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVD) by taking a small piece of the ear and submitting it to a diagnostic laboratory because this virus can cause dummy calves. Secondly, I would suggest that a deficiency of copper could do this and so you might give Multimin injections to the calves and the cows pre-calving if you suspect an extreme deficiency in the area. Thirdly, protein deficiency if severe can cause similar problems but would have to be extreme and the cows would usually have a poor body condition score. .

BVD might be my first possibility. In those calves born to cows that need assistance and are hard pulls, the calves suffer from both metabolic and respiratory acidosis which makes the calf lethargic, weak and less likely to stand and nurse. Metabolic acidosis can be corrected by giving lactated ringers and respiratory acidosis can be corrected by the use of oxygen. Dry the calf off, especially if the weather is cold, and this also helps to physically stimulate them. Remember that cows in poor body condition tend to deliver calves that are weaker and will take longer to deliver the calf. That is why nutrition is so important and cows and heifers should have a minimum of 5 body condition scores at calving and 6 is better (see “The effects of nutrition on reproduction in beef cattle” in the March 2011 issue of the Pinzgauer Journal).

Q2. We have had some extreme drought conditions here in the Midwestern states and it has affected our conception rates. What can we do to help eliminate some of the problems in our breeding herd?

A. I realize that hay is very expensive in some areas but I would supplement as much as possible with good quality grass or alfalfa hay and if you can’t afford to do so, then I would do some serious culling. If you don’t get the proper energy and protein levels into the breeding herd then they will have suppressed estrus and lower conception rates. A deficiency of protein may also cause a few abortions and weak calves as seen in the question above. Along with energy and protein you must remember the importance of trace minerals because a lack of Vitamins A, D, and E along with selenium can cause 10 The Pinzgauer Journal - June 2013

retained fetal membranes and weak calves with diarrhea that may die soon after birth. Copper deficiency can also cause depressed reproduction as well. I saw a herd that increased their conception rates by 10-15% by injecting the cows with Multimin (copper and selenium) prior to breeding. Another thing you can do prior to breeding is to deworm the cattle because parasites utilize a lot of feed in the cattle.

Q3. We are thinking about breeding our heifers to black Angus bulls because we are experiencing too many calves with high birth weights.

A. As far as the heavy birth weights go, I believe there are several Pinzgauer bulls that you can use artificially and experience smaller birth weights. Some of these bulls that you can get semen from and breed artificially are Gates, HPR Playboy, 4M Haller Fox and DSP Polled Bando. According to research, and verified by former dairyman Mike Foshee, if you decrease the protein diet and feed heifers a good energy but low protein diet, you can decrease calving problems by up to 25%. Remember also that there are differences in gestation lengths between certain family lines. I would try and find bulls that came from cows with low birth weights and shorter gestation lengths if possible because they are highly related traits. Research has shown that the calf grows 1 to 1 and ½ pounds per day during the last two weeks of gestation so a bull calf that goes over the gestation period of 283 days could be decidedly larger than calves from shorter gestation births.

Q4. What do you think about black Pinzgauers and do you think that they should be eligible for registration and for showing in nationally sanctioned shows?

A. As far as the black Pinzgauers go, I personally don’t care for anything but the red and whites and I don’t think that the black cattle should be allowed in our show system. It disappoints me that so many breeds have gone black in order to sell their cattle. You can’t tell whether it is Angus, Limousin, Maine Anjou, Simmental, Salers, or whatever because their all black. I remember when the Angus were trying to get larger cattle they bred to Holsteins and were spray painting their cattle at the shows to cover up the white on the legs and bellies. Also the Herefords brought in some large Simmental to increase the size of their cattle and this is all nonsense and cheating as far as I am concerned but it happened a lot about 35-40 years ago.

Q5. How do you feel about giving modified live (MLV) vaccines to pregnant cattle?

A. I would not recommend using MLV vaccines because many times they can be the cause of abortions in pregnant cattle. I have seen this for forty-three years of practice and some of the vaccines have not gotten a whole lot better during that time. I recently read a study that showed one of the most popular MLV vaccines for IBR, BVD, PI3 and BRSV caused 25% of the pregnant heifers to abort even though these cattle had also been vaccinated previously to breeding them. For this reason I would recommend the use of only killed products in pregnant cattle.

Q6. I have noticed that some of my cows get very upset when I come around their newborn calves and sometimes when I am going to feed them without any calves. Do you have any ideas?

A. Yes. The cow with a new calf is nervous, protective, and can be easily upset. When working around calving cows it’s best not to do any talking at all or make any noise. Most cows trust you better at calving if you are quiet when working around them. Also they have a keen sense of smell and are easily upset by something unusual. It is best not to have any strange smells on your clothing such as smoke. Don’t use scented hand creams or after-shave lotions, or deodorant when working with cattle. It is best to use your old dirty clothing and coveralls when working around the barn that they are used to seeing and smelling.

Q7. We have a young heifer that had twin calves two weeks ago and she is still straining after she urinates and she seems to be a little weak and staggers when she walks.

Her body condition is probably around a 3. Is there anything we might be able to do without calling the vet?

A. When a heifer in that kind of body condition has twins it takes a lot out of them because they tend to be hypoglycemic and have a low blood calcium, phosphorus and magnesium as well. For this I would get 500cc of a product which can be given (I like Norcalciphos but there are others available) intravenously but also is safe to give under the hide (subcutaneous)..

If so I would give her between 250 to 500 ml under the hide in about 5 to 10 different areas on both sides of the neck which should help the weakness and staggering. I would also give her some high energy grain along with all the hay she can consume. As far as the straining since she got rid of her after-birth I would say she may have some infection and necrosis in the vagina, from the trauma of calving. If you have a few urea boluses I would try and put about three in the vagina since her cervix will usually be closed and that should clear up the straining. Good luck.

Q8. I see that you have a pregnancy from a frozen embryo, could you tell me more about this area of genetics?

A. One of the most exciting ways to obtain a herd of top full blood genetics is the area of frozen

embryos. There are several herds offering frozen embryos (see the embryo buyers guide in the Spring issue of the Journal). I got two embryos and had a veterinarian (who was one of my former students) put one each in two dairy heifers. One became pregnant and at 60 days he ultra sounded the recipient and determined she was carrying a heifer calf. You should find a veterinarian that is certified by the American Embryo Transfer Society and have them do the collection and transfer of the embryos. Actually it is the cheapest way to go to get into some of the best genetics around as you can buy a good frozen embryo for about $300-500 apiece. There are many cattle being exported into countries such as Russia from the United States at the present time and a good many frozen embryos are being used to increase their top genetics. It is much easier, and cheaper, to import, or export, frozen semen and embryos than it is the live cattle. Make sure that you get a veterinarian that has a good reputation and background in collecting, freezing and transferring embryos. Their success should be 65%+ on fresh embryo transfers and 50%+ on frozen embryos.

Conception rates following AI by qualified inseminators should be 75%.

Q9. .I have a few small animal tips that may help some of you with your valuable dogs that could save you money. For instance some old dogs have arthritis and have a hard time getting around and most prescription drugs are very expensive. You can give a regular 200mg aspirin once a day for every 40-50 pounds of body weight and it will work pretty well. Just don’t use the coated ones only the regular aspirin. Also for a mild stomach upset give one PeptoBismol tablet per 20 pounds to stop vomiting. However, if vomiting is still persistent you should see your vet. Also if you have bird dogs that get lame from sore feet come bird hunting season a good preventative is to apply Kopertox to the pads for two weeks and it toughens up the pads and prevents lameness. Good luck and please note that I am not a small animal vet but these things have worked well for me over the years.

Spring calving season should be wrapping up soon for most cow calf operations and the attention will soon be turned to preparing for next spring’s calving season. The first step in that preparation is to get the cows pregnant again.

Whether a bull breeds your herd or you utilize artificial insemination or even embryo transfer, there are a few things to consider right now as you prepare to get the cows bred.

Obviously, bull breeding requires the least amount of inputs, but there are still some things that you want to consider to avoid a bunch of open cows this fall. First, buy bulls that have passed a breeding soundness exam including a semen test. Imagine the frustration if your cows continue to come in heat through August because the bull was not getting them settled.

Second, make sure the cows are ready for the bull.

This involves more than just providing adequate nutrition and minerals, although those are very important. Once all of the calves are on the ground, it is a good time to vaccinate the cow herd with a modified live (MLV) 10 way respiratory vaccine containing 5 strains of Lepto. Do not use these MLV vaccines on pregnant cows, though, as they can induce abortion in naïve cattle.

If you want a tight calving season next year, you need to have all your cows cycling again soon after delivering their calves. Cows with nursing calves are notoriously slow to cycle due to the effects of the calf. Every time the calf nurses, the action of suckling induces the cow to let her milk down which is achieved by the action of the hormone oxytocin. A secondary effect of the oxytocin is to prevent the cow from resuming her normal estrous cycle, sometimes for several months.

We can fool the cow into thinking it’s time to breed again by simply interrupting the oxytocin release for about 36 hours or so. To do this, you have to separate the calves from the cows for 36 hours. They will bawl and bawl, so you might want to warn the neighbors. Offer the calves some clean water and nice soft second crop hay and they will be fine for the short time that the cow needs. This separation will often induce an ovulation and the cows will

be displaying estrus behavior within 2 to 3 weeks. After the separation, the cows will find their own calves and all will be right in their world again.

This can be done either to a group of cows or individuals. This is a trick I use periodically to get an embryo donor to cycle in time to be flushed and bred back again for the next calving season. Donor cows don’t respond to stimulation drugs unless they have already gone through a cycle and removing the calf will induce her to cycle. We have done this successfully in cows with calves as young as 45 days old.

We’ve also used this trick to induce cycling in cows to be synchronized for artificial insemination and embryo recipients. You want to remove the calves at least 2 weeks before starting the synchronization protocol in both brood cows and recipients. That will give enough time for the first ovulation to occur before setting up the synchronization program.

Speaking of synchronization programs, there have been some great advancements with protocols over the last few years. The main drawback to systematic timed breeding in beef cattle is number of times they have to go through the chute for injections. The original Pre-Synch protocol took about 38 days and 6 trips through the chute. Recent advancements have shortened that to as little as 8 days and 3 trips through the chute. One recently developed protocol called 5 day CO-Synch plus CIDR can be completed in 8 days and has shown superior conception rates to older, more established synchronization protocols.

These protocols require prescription drugs and, as such, I cannot recommend them in this format, so ask your herd veterinarian about them.

Getting beef cattle bred back quickly can help tighten your calving season leading to a more uniform group of calves. Increasing the number of calves you wean by improving reproductive efficiency can have a huge impact on your bottom line. In the current beef market, a little extra attention to detail can dramatically increase revenue from calves. Plan today for a big payoff next year.

The Junior Gazette

number of juniors from the Midwest participated in the Black River Spring Thaw Show in Black River Falls Wisconsin on April 13th. It was quite the experience.

We washed our cattle outside in a snow storm and before the day was over we had three inches of snow in two hours. Some of the juniors also participated in the Pioneer Showdown Show at Lancaster, Wisconsin on April 21st. This was a pleasant day but one of the exhibitors had a broken rib and didn’t know it and in the middle of the show it became very evident but he finished the show with a lot of pain.

Many of the juniors worked on the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s steak trailer at the Horse Fair to earn money for their show in June. The juniors are getting ready for the Midwest Junior Pinzgauer show on June 1st at Seymour Wisconsin. There is always a fitting contest on Friday. Every junior has a chance to work on one cow with about 10 other kids. It is a great way to learn about fitting for shows.

We will get the results of our royalty contest on Saturday June 1st and the new royalty will start their job immediately

handing out ribbons at the open show in the morning and the junior show in the afternoon.

Farm Tech days are July 16th,17th, and 18th. Our royalty will be there telling everyone about our breed along with an exhibit of our breed. This year some of the juniors are helping to make an exhibit of beef by-products for the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Tent.

Our Midwest District show will be held at the Wisconsin State Fair again this year the week before the National Show in Missouri. This is going to be a busy week for all of us that attend both shows.

Five Minutes with Dr. Kurt Vogel, ethics and animals

Kurt Vogel conducts seminars on animal welfare. He’s a cattle handling expert who learned his trade while a student at Colorado State University from the best – Temple Grandin. Now a grizzled Ph.D., he teaches at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, Wis. The core of his seminars is “societal ethics and how to keep up with them” and he took that message into California, the heartland of agricultural controversy, in May. “Societal ethics” and cattle? What the hell is that, I asked myself when I first heard about what Dr. Vogel was trying to do. In this day of short-attention-span theater, immediate gratification and quickly expanding definitions of acceptable lifestyle choices, what is a societal ethic and how can you keep up with it, even if you’re not tying it to the backside of a cow?

Well, if you want answers to something, you’ve got to ask the questions. So I tracked down the relatively newly minted Doctor and posed a few pointed questions. The guy answered in plain English, none of that loopy pop-psych-speak that I expected. He put his finger on the agriculture/urban disconnect that seems to infuriate both sides from time-to-time.

He suggested that both sides are basically the same decent, honorable people that need to sit down for a long, mutually respectful talk. It might lead to a shaking of hands, not a shaking of fists, and a better understanding of what’s needed for both to be happy.

Our politicians should only be as wise.

But let’s leave Washington to the beltway crazies and just try to solve our own outlander issues of finding a common ground for aggies and urbanites. Here’s what Dr. Vogel had to say: Q. Your seminar on cattle welfare in May took place in the heart of one of the states where animal welfare is a volatile issue – California. Most farmers are concerned about the health and well-being of the animals under their care and they are a little shocked at the suggestion by some that they aren’t doing enough. Would you talk about the differences in opinion that is creating this controversy?

A. The opinions that members of society hold toward onfarm animal care are largely based on a trust that has formed over time that farmers do everything they can to care for their animals. This view is still very common, and for the most part, well-deserved. I think that the root of this issue can be found in the separation that has formed between agriculture and the rest of society, but there is another force at work that makes the issue of on-farm animal care so polarizing: the questioning of ideologies.

An ideology is a concept that someone accepts as true and rarely, if ever, questions. The root cause of the controversy, in my opinion, is the ‘rediscovery’ of agriculture by the public, which is followed by questioning of practices that are performed (or not performed) on the farm. In livestock agriculture, we accept the ideology that we are doing everything we can to care for our livestock and that only we know what is best for our animals. When this is questioned by society, we become offended and defensive instead of taking a more objective look at what needs to be explained or improved on our farms. My advice here is: don’t take questions from society personally – calm down, think about them, and respond appropriately.

Q. In a piece you wrote last month for the National Provisioner, you said, “When the personal ethics of a majority of a group of people are the same for specific issues, these beliefs become part of the societal ethic. The provision of stunning for commercially slaughtered livestock under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act of 1978 made the use of pre-slaughter stunning in livestock slaughter facilities part of the societal ethic.” Are you saying personal ethics tend to become law?

A. That’s correct. Generally speaking, when a majority of society believes that a specific rule should be followed, it eventually becomes law. This is what happened with the provision of pre-slaughter stunning. This legislation was actually phased in. In 1958, it was imposed on all slaughter facilities that sold product to the U.S. government, and in 1978 it was expanded to include all federally inspected (and by default, state-inspected) livestock-slaughter establishments. Today, compliance with the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act of 1978 is as universal for slaughter establishments as speed limits for drivers on the highway.

Q. The ‘societal belief’ among people in agriculture is the forces behind these proposals have a specific, vegetariandriven motive; ending animal agriculture forever. Statements attributed to Wayne Pacelle of HSUS and Ingrid Newkirk of PETA leave little doubt. The tipping-point question here is; have the animal welfare/rights groups done a better job of selling their belief system to the public than people in animal agriculture?

A. I think that groups such as PETA and HSUS have done a better job of engaging the public and selling their belief system than animal agriculture has up to this point, but the issue here is not based solely on public relations. In my view, there are a few major mistakes that have been made by animal agriculture in their own promotion. The first is that

animal agriculture has been slow to engage the public, and has traditionally tried to limit what the public is able to see out of concern that the public will find some part of what they do to be inflammatory.

The second error was the inappropriate use of advertising to portray an image of specific sectors of the industry that is not true. During the seminar I gave for Fresno State University, California beef and dairy producers expressed disappointment over the California Milk Advisory Board’s “Happy Cows” commercial series because the images of cows on green, rolling pastures were not a true portrayal of the their dairy industry.

Other sectors of animal agriculture have done the same sort of advertising in some form. When the public realizes that the commercials are not consistent with the industry, they become disgusted.

The third error that animal agriculture has made is not focusing enough attention on making sure that egregious animal abuse issues do not arise. After an undercover video is released that shows unacceptable abuse to animals, it is natural for the public to question what is actually happening on farms. To combat this, everyone in animal agriculture needs to understand that they must do what they say they are doing.

If they claim they are treating their animals well, they have to actually do it.

Quite frankly, the majority of society just wants to rest assured that their trust for animal agriculture is valid. By starting a dialogue with society and allowing the public to see what happens on farms, at markets, and in slaughter facilities, we can strengthen the future of animal agriculture by allowing society to provide a fresh perspective of our facilities and production practices. But we have to respond to societal concerns with clear explanations when appropriate and corrective action when necessary. We can all acknowledge that nobody is perfect and that flaws in our production practices do exist. Society as a whole understands this as well and a great amount of respect could be gained for animal agriculture by openly acknowledging that we aren’t perfect, but we’re working on it.

Q. Your NP article mentioned the” gruesome undercover video of unacceptable calf euthanasia methods was recorded at E6 Cattle Company — a large calf ranch that grows dairy calves as replacement animals for dairy farms — by an activist group called Mercy for Animals.” MFA just released a similar video showing mistreated hogs on a farm in Iowa. You went on to say, “Not surprisingly, the reaction of the people in the livestock industries that I have observed watching the video is largely identical to the reaction of people that do not make their living in agriculture.”

Shock and revulsion is the best description of how both groups felt, yet the takeaway by those outside agriculture is that kind of mistreatment is standard practice down on the farm. Is it possible to match up the very similar societal ethic of both groups and create a better mutual understanding?

A. It is definitely possible to create a mutual understanding between society and animal agriculture. I believe that it is vitally important for both sides to recognize that their core values are not different. Once this ‘common ground’ is established, it will become much easier to foster productive dialogue. What is interesting about this whole issue is that the classifications of ‘us’ and ‘them’ are completely imaginary. Once animal agriculture and society start to interact, both sides will realize that they are all people that have families, eat food, go to work, and do all the other things that members of society do.

Q. I agree with your statement that people “do not tolerate negligence on the part of those who are responsible for the care, handling and slaughter of livestock.” Do we expand that statement from cattle, poultry and hogs to include household pets, too.

A. That’s a good point. I totally agree.

Q. Let’s debate the other part of your statement: “They understand that we raise and slaughter animals for food.”

With less than 2% of American actively engaged in agriculture and most of us several generations removed from the farm, isn’t there a significant number of people who don’t realize that the cute little calf they see frolicking in the field is destined to become steaks, roasts and burgers in about 18 months?

A. I agree that most of society doesn’t understand that the calf that they see on spring or fall pastures will be boxed beef in 15 – 18 months. They also don’t understand that the calf they see will likely gain at a rate of 3.5 – 4.5 lbs/day while they are on feed at a feedlot and that the same calf has a pretty good chance of riding a center-track restrainer and being stunned by a Jarvis® captive bolt stunner if it is shipped to a larger slaughter facility.

My point is that most of society still understands that beef and milk come from cattle, pork comes from pigs, and chicken and eggs come from chickens. For the most part, they don’t know the intricate details of how to raise and convert these animals to meat, but that is not necessarily mandatory. If they choose to consume meat, milk, and eggs, then they have a legitimate right to know how the animals were cared for if they would like to. They also have the right to ask questions about these processes. Animal agriculture has a legitimate obligation to educate, answer questions, and fix any legitimate problems that are identified by interested consumers.

Ethics & Animals Continued Q. Let’s talk about labeling. Rumors abound that statements about the level of care given to an animal might become part of the labeling process. It takes us all into a taste vs. emotion debate. Will “Ethically Raised and Humanely Harvested” or similar label statements trump taste and price in the meat case? With all the information currently required on labels and a variety of ‘approvals’ required to earn certain claims, are we overloading consumers with information they’ll ignore?

A. Research is showing that on initial purchase, consumers are attracted to label claims that ensure the animals from which the product was derived were well cared for.

However, taste and eating experience are the factors that bring consumers back to purchase the same product again.

Depending on the consumer, the price, taste, and animal care labeling are afforded different levels of attention.

For the consumer that is struggling to make enough money to pay the mortgage, price would be the primary factor of concern. For a more affluent consumer, price may not be as much of a factor and taste and animal care may rise to the top or their list of concerns. I think that it is good for information regarding the care of animals to be available to the consumer, but it must be understandable to the consumer, and most importantly, it must be honest.

Q. Thousands of people read Drovers/CattleNetwork.

What would you like to say to them?

A. Engaging the public is one of the most important things that animal agriculturalists can do. Generally speaking, cattle producers have a set of values that make them wellequipped to engage with society. Firstly, and most importantly, they value honesty. Being honest with society will foster the development of trust. The development of trust is accompanied by dialogue.

I’ve met a lot of folks in the beef industry that are great listeners. By listening to the questions and concerns of society, cattle producers can help people outside of their occupation understand what they do and they also can address issues that they may not have recognized before. It is important to remember that the vast majority of society is not against the use of animals for food and fiber. They just want to know that the people who are responsible for caring for the animals are doing the right thing. They will respect and appreciate members of animal agriculture that have real discussions with them, actually hear their questions and concerns, and provide logical and rational responses that are clearly unscripted.

Pinzgauer Apparel: just about ready to start making products, we will have a new tab on the web site called “Pinzgauer Apparel.” We will make 15% on what is sold, will be paid every 6 months, there will be an order form in the journal.

Board Nominations: send them to Harriet, can we have it so members have to be in breed for three-four years before they serve on the board, Clayton/Harriet off Kim/Nancy up for reelection.

By-laws were last up-dated in 2011 we are working off these.

We will be adding an Ethics committee on the board to reflect the board members and general members to be disused more at the August meeting.
